The relationship between Bone mineral density (BMD) and atherosclerosis in older postmenopausal women is a subject of increasing concern because of the great importance of atherosclerotic diseases in later life and the need to identify its potentially modifiable risk factors. This thesis was carried on 150 ambulant postmenopausal women apparently healthy (aging from 55 years old and above) in Ain Shams University Hospitals, Cairo, Egypt. Measurement of BMD of lumbar spine and femur neck by DEXA scan and measurement of intima-media thickness of both common and internal carotid arteries by ultrasonography with assessment of plaques and the degree of stenosis (if present) were carried out. The results of this study revealed that there is a statistically significant positive relation between the presence of plaques in carotid arteries and low BMD of both lumbar spine and femur neck. Multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that after controlling for age and duration of menopause; osteoporosis of femur neck could be used as a predictor for atherosclerotic plaques in postmenopausal women.

Osteoporosis is a common metabolic bone disease and although creates health problems mainly in older women, but the etiology of osteoporosis largely begins at a younger age. Therefore prevention of this disease is top on the agenda of many health initiatives worldwide. Improving knowledge, attitude and health behaviors is the first-line effective strategy for prevention. Thus in a community-based experimental study we evaluated the effectiveness of an educational osteoporosis program based on the Health Belief Model on knowledge, beliefs and practice (exercise)among a sample of Iranian young female. Participants in the intervention group were exposed to a three months educational program. Osteoporosis knowledge, health beliefs, and total time (min) and frequency of weight-bearing exercise in the past seven days were assessed at baseline, and at the end of three months follow up. This book indicates that an effectiveness osteoporosis educational program can help to improve Iranian young female knowledge, beliefs and regular exercise as a health prevention action for osteoporosis.

Many people appear to be unaware of the risk factors and preventive behaviors associated with osteoporosis. Education to increase awareness is identified as being paramount in helping to prevent this disease. Present study examined the effectiveness of a three-month osteoporosis educational prevention program based on the Health Beliefs Model on knowledge, health beliefs, and practice about calcium intake, among young Iranian female. Participants in the intervention group were exposed to a three-month multi-component educational program including a group lecture, self study materials, individual face to face consultation, emails and phone reminders. Osteoporosis knowledge, beliefs, self-efficacy, and calcium intake, were assessed at baseline and at the end of three months follow up. This study showed poor levels of knowledge regarding osteoporosis among Iranian young female students at baseline. The intervention program was effective in improving knowledge, beliefs, and self-efficacy to take action about calcium intake as a lifestyle factor for the prevention of osteoporosis in young women.

Tempeh is a traditional fermented soybean product, which is normally produced by the cottage industry in Malaysia and normally consumed as fried, boiled, steamed or roasted. In Malaysian diet, tempeh is categorized as one of the calcium-containing food source in addition to milk and dairy products. The postmenopausal Malay women in Malaysia were reported to consume only 30–60% from the recommended 1,000 mg calcium/day. Thus, in order to assess the bioavailability of tempeh as a calcium source, fractional calcium absorption from tempeh was determined in 20 healthy postmenopausal Malay women. It was compared to that observed from milk using dual stable isotopes (42Ca and 44Ca) approach in a randomized cross over design. The same load of calcium (130 mg) from either milk or tempeh was given to the subjects, with a one-month of wash out period between each test meal. All urine was collected from subjects after the 24-h of post-dosing and ratio of the isotopes in urine was determined using the magnetic sector Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer. Average fractional calcium absorption from tempeh did not differ significantly from milk.

El presente estudio pretendió determinar el efecto de un programa de actividad física para personas mayores de 18 años con situación de discapacidad física del Municipio de Rionegro Antioquia durante el año 2010. Se trabajó con una muestra de 6 personas con discapacidad física, Personas entre los 20 y los 50 años de edad con distintas condiciones de discapacidad física. El grupo fue sometido a un entrenamiento en gimnasio durante 3 meses, tres veces por semana; cuya evolución se observó mediante test antropométricos y de fuerza muscular en miembros superiores e inferiores antes y después de la aplicación del programa.
