510 males with ischemic heart disease were asked to fill out the abridged five-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5. 90.4% (461) of the respondents reported some degree of erectile dysfunction(IIEF-5 score >22). 24.5% have mild ED; 26.7% have mild to moderate ED; 5.5% have moderate ED and 33.7% have severe ED. Age above 60 years old and diuretic are the most significant risk factors for ED by logistic regression when adjusted for all confounding factors. Other important risk factors include diabetes and hypertension. Erectile dysfunction is common among patients with established coronary heart disease. In this study, the prevalence is much higher than that of the normal population. The prevalence and severity of ED increased significantly in men above the age of 50 years old. Diabetes, hypertension and diuretic use are important risk factors for erectile dysfunction. Understanding the magnitude of the problem and taking remedial steps may significantly improve the quality of life of these affected individuals.

As an emerging independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, homocysteine related research has sparked a vigorous debate over the past decade. Since insufficient data are available to depict the correlation of rising plasma homocysteine levels with various biochemical parameters, the present study aimed not only at determining the magnitude of risk associated with hyperhomocysteinemia and the effect of folic acid therapy in patients of chronic stable angina in the absence of other conventional risk factors but also aimed to ascertain the possible correlations of homocysteine with other biochemical parameters so as to determine the implications in the causation of Ischemic Heart Disease. At present, the magnitude of the benefit remains uncertain, but an increase in folic acid intake among the general population can lead to a worthwhile reduction in mortality from Ischemic Heart Disease. Thus an attempt has been made through this study to ascertain whether hyperhomocysteinemia should be ignored or be considered as an independent but modifiable risk factor?

Scientific Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Medicine - Internal Medicine, , language: English, abstract: This paper examines the relations between Apoliprotein B, Apoliprotein A1 and Diabetes Type 2.Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of metabolic disorders of multiple aetiology and characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia with disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The effects of diabetes mellitus include long-term damage, dysfunction and failure of various organs. Diabetes mellitus may present with characteristic symptoms such as thirst, polyuria, blurring of vision, and weight loss. In its most severe forms, ketoacidosis or a non-ketotic hyperosmolar state may develop and lead to stupor, coma and in absence of effective treatment, death. Often symptoms are not severe, or may be absent, and consequently hyperglycaemia sufficient to cause pathological and functional changes may be present for a long time before the diagnosis is made. It is a major health problem in all nations. Diabetes is the single, most important metabolic disease, widely recognized as one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. This devastating disease can affect nearly every system in the body. It can cause blindness, lead to end stage renal disease, lower extremity amputations and increase the risk for stroke, ischemic heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, and neuropathy. There has been an upsurge in the number of coronary artery disease (CAD) cases worldwide, of late now, and CAD, as such, looms large among the killer diseases of the world. In the current scenario, India stands as the CAD capital of the world. It is postulated that more than half of the worldwide cardiovascular risk burden will be borne by India and the Indian sub-continent in the next decade [Gupta R et al, 2008]. There is a significant difference in the prevalence of CAD with respect to gender, age, ethnicity and cardiovascular disease has been emerging as a major health burden in the developing world [Reddy KS et al, 1998]. Also, the risk factors for ischemic heart disease as well as the acute coronary syndrome are on the rise in people of Indian origin [Gupta M et al, 2006; Jafar TH et al, 2005].With the increase in number of cases of coronary artery disease, interest has generated among researchers to look for the newer and modifiable risk factors for CAD. Whereas, the modification of risk factors would help prevent the very onset of CAD as well as decrease the incidence thereof, a new set of prognostic markers are being discussed worldwide.

What is required is good information. Did you know that more than half of those suffering from cardiovascular disease have cholesterol in the normal range? Would it surprise you to learn that the majority of cardiovascular events are attributed to blockages of less than fifty percent? Your arteries are a muscle not a pipe, therefore beating heart disease takes work, but it can be done. We' ve shown for the first time that gene expression pattern is altered in the myocardium of cholesterol-fed mouse in response to ischemic preconditioning. This effect is apparent in the regulation of NO signaling, oxidant producing enzymes, and the mevalonate pathway. Our was the first demonstration in human apoB-100 transgenic mice, that hypercholesterolemia but not hypertriglyceridemia is responsible for the hyperlipidemia-induced, peroxynitrite-mediated cardiac dysfunction, and that increased cardiac NADPH oxidase activity is a major source of increased oxidative stress in hypercholesterolemia. We observed first, that acute lovastatin treatment abolished the infarct size-limiting effect of ischemic preconditioning and that chronic lovastatin treatment attenuated the protective effect of ischemic postconditioning. We've also proposed that acute and chronic lovastatin treatment might modulated the cardioprotective mechanisms through different cellular pathways.

37 Heart Disease Juice Recipe Remedies: Begin to Feel the Difference with These Easy to Prepare Juice Recipes!By Joe Correa CSN Many people believe that heart disease is a problem that only happens to other people. Furthermore, people believe that they are too young or too healthy to have any problems with their heart. This, unfortunately, is not true.Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the world, for both men and women. A wide range of conditions that affect the heart can become a serious problem for middle-aged as well as older people. Once the disease is diagnosed, it lasts for life which is why your doctor will advise some medications and lifestyle changes. This part is crucial in keeping the condition under control. On the contrary, heart disease will get worse over time.Fortunately, changing lifestyle choices, a healthy diet, and moderate exercise can reduce the risk of getting heart disease, or atleast, control the existing condition. But first, you have to understand that there are two major risk factors that lead to heart disease. Family history is a huge risk factor when considering heart disease that can’t be controlled. If this is your case, then a proper physical exam should be scheduled promptly. Unhealthy lifestyle choices like smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, alcoholism, stress, increased cholesterol levels and diabetes are among the main causes of heart disease. Fortunately, these outside factors can easily be controlled with a proper diet...

Ischemic heart disease leads to the malfunctioning of the affected tissue. Stem cell transplantation near the ischemic tissue is a possible therapeutic approach to regenerate the fibrotic tissue. The ischemic or fibrotic tissue is not able to supply the nutrients and oxygen to the transplanted cells. Therefore, the transplanted cells start to die within hours after transplantation. The ischemic and apoptotic hostile microenvironment also contributes to slow down the healing process. Strategies to enhance endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) survival after transplantation in the ischemic tissues so far have achieved little success. Oxytocin a nano-peptide hormone and mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channel opener is known to suppress cell apoptosis and promote cell survival. . In this study, the effect of oxytocin preconditioning on EPCs under hypoxic injury was studied. oxytocin preconditioning is effective to improve the survival of EPCs under oxidative stress conditions by the activation of cyto-protective genes involved in different pathways.

Dental caries is a multi factorial, bacterial, chronic infection that affects millions of people in the world and has become a public health problem. Also referred to as tooth decay, this disease is one of the most common disorders throughout the world, second only to the common cold. Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States and is 5 to 7 times more common than asthma. According to the World Oral Health Report in 2003, dental caries affect 60-80% of school children and a vast majority of adults. Dental caries is a chronic bacterial infection of the hard tissue of the tooth that is characterized by alternating phases of demineralization and remineralization. Dental decay can lead to significant pain and dysfunction that can interfere with basic functions such as eating, sleeping, and speaking. If left untreated, dental caries can result in cavities forming and, eventually, tooth loss. Although the prevalence and severity of dental caries has decreased over the years, this disease can be controlled better with proper fluoride exposure.Fluoride dentifrices have been shown in numerous clinical trials to be effective anticaries agents and have been recognized as a major cause of the remarkable decline in caries prevalence in many developed countries. Dentifrices have been widely adopted around the world as the principle means of delivering topical fluoride and obtaining caries preventive benefits. Although there is documented literature on th...

Myocardial ischemia, be it silent or asymptomatic, is defined as an objective documentation of myocardial ischemia, in the absence of angina or its equivalents. Among the subjects who can be asymptomatic coronary heart disease carriers, athletes also come into this category, i.e. individuals who regularly practice and compete in sports events at highly competitive athletic levels. Most of the patients with silent myocardial ischemia due to coronary artery disease are athletes.Silent myocardial ischemia is not the same as silent coronary artery disease. Symptomatic angina is the tip of the ischemic iceberg and in athletes is smaller than non -athletes. Athletes are normally considered individuals in good if not great health, thus when one of them is struck by sudden death, it creates uproar and consternation. However, just as what happens among the population on a whole, athletes can harbour unrecognized cardiac. For this reason the preparticipation screening program of athletes has the goal of of the early identification of previously unsuspected cardiovascular disease in the hope that these strategies will reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death.

A major shift is taking place across the globe in the burden of CVD; this ‘transition’ includes the emergence of Stroke, Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) and Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) in developing economies. In India, rapid economic growth and urbanisation coupled with increased life expectancy has greatly expanded the population at risk of mortality and morbidity from chronic diseases, including CVD. The rise of CVD in India underscores the imperative need to develop appropriate and effective prevention policies and programmes. However, informed policies and programmes require sound data on the epidemiology of the disease burden, which is currently inadequate. Not surprisingly, these data are often met with skepticism. This literature review aimed to study the epidemiology and the epidemiological transition of CVD in India. A comprehensive review of published and unpublished studies on Stroke,CHD and PAD was conducted and findings related to incidence, prevalence, mortality, modifiable risk factors and the epidemiological transition are described. This information will be especially useful to policy makers, development agencies, non-government organizations, academia and researchers.

Over eighty per cent of all cardiovascular disease-related deaths now occur in patients aged sixty five or older. The high prevalence of co-morbidities, frailty and cognitive decline amongst older patients requires that a holistic approach to the management of cardiovascular disease is required. Written and edited by leading experts in the field, ‘Cardiovascular diseases and health in the older patient’ provides scholarly evidence and data which explain why treating an older patient with cardiovascular disease is often different from treating a young or middle-aged patient with the same disease. The chapters have been updated and expanded from the cardiovascular section of the renowned ‘Pathy’s Principles and Practice of Geriatric Medicine’, edited by Alan J. Sinclair, John E. Morley and Bruno Vellas. The revised chapters contain updated evidence and references to recent clinical practice guidelines in Europe and North America, this book provides complete, authoritative information on this major cause of death, poor health and disability in old age. Covering the epidemiology, pathophysiology and management of cardiovascular disease in the older patient, the book is an excellent reference at all clinical and pre-clinical levels and will appeal particularly to geriatricians, cardiologists, and GPs, as well as cardiac specialist nurses and practice nurses. With a Foreword by Stuart M. Cobbe.

Chemical dependency among the adult population in America has reached epidemic proportion. An estimated 30 million people abuse themselves daily with alcohol and drugs. For every chemically-dependent adult, at least five others are directly affected: children, spouses, parents, siblings, etc. America is intimately involved with a full-blown pandemic. This pandemic is the disease of addiction and family dysfunction. These letters to Sarah represent a strong warning of the insidious nature of this disease and an account of one father's personal recovery from its cunning and baffling ways.

Hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV & HCV) are hepatotropic viruses causing viral hepatitis, chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatitis B and C virus infections are still major public health problems around the globe. Both of these viruses are transmitted mainly through the parenteral route and therefore a dual infection of these viruses can occur and even persists in the same patient. They are prevalent in different parts of the world including Ethiopia. In view of this, hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted in three public hospitals of Addis Ababa over a period of 7 months (Nov 2010- May 2011) on clinically diagnosed chronic liver disease patients. Serum samples from each volunteering patients was screened for the presence of HBsAg and anti-HCV Ab.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Medicine - Public Health, , language: English, abstract: Background: Egypt has the highest prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the world. Screening of HCV during pregnancy is not routinely done in Egypt as many other countries, although pregnancy is an important period where screening of HCV infection is important owing to low immunity, the possibility of vertical transmission and later on horizontal transmission to the baby or other household contacts.Aim: to determine the seroprevalence of HCV antibodies (HCV-Ab) and risk factors associated with infection among pregnant women in Egypt.Patients and Method: 360 pregnant women visiting the health care units for routine antenatal care were tested using 3rd generation ELISA test for detection of HCV-Ab. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done for seropositive cases. Results: 6.1% (22/360) of pregnant women were HCV seropositive; of them only (9/20; 45%) had viraemia. Risk factors were their age, the age of their and the presence of chronic liver disease in the husband. Conclusion: The prevalence of HCV infection in pregnant women in Egypt appears to be lower than previously reported. The detected risk factors are old age of the pregnant women and their husbands and chronic liver disease in the husbands. None of the other known risk factors was found to be significantly associated with HCV infection in pregnant women.

The study revealed 47.6 % life time prevalence and 40.6 % current prevalence of substance use specifically 31.1 % Khat Chewers, 14.1 % Alcohol drinkers and 6.7 % cigarette smokers. Using logistic regression, male gender (p<0.001), being in the age group 19-29 (p=0.001), having substance user family (p=0.04), and having substance user friend (p<0.001) were found to be independent predictors of substance use. Substance use behaviors were associated with factors as age group, Male Gender, user family member and user friend. Substance use prevention programs directed at these groups are most likely to succeed in minimizing the prevalence.

Newcastle disease virus continues to be a threat to the poultry industry worldwide. The disease has become more pronounced in resource constrained households that rely on backyard poultry system as a source of income and animal protein particularly in under developed countries including Uganda. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of Newcastle disease virus in apparently healthy birds, identify the Newcastle disease virus pathotypes and genotypes circulating in Uganda and to compare the regional distribution of these strains in live bird markets in Uganda. Six hundred fifty (each of cloacal and oropharyngeal swabs) samples were collected from live bird markets in all the regions of Uganda. The samples were processed and inoculated in 10-day old embryonated chicken eggs and incubated for 72 hours. Allantoic fluid was harvested and tested for the presence of Newcastle disease virus using hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition tests.

Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Biology - Diseases, Health, Nutrition, , language: English, abstract: The prevalence of cervical cancer and mortality rates has continued over the years despite several international and local efforts to reduce it in developing countries particularly sub-Saharan Africa which have the highest prevalence rates globally. This dissertation appraised the factors responsible for cervical cancer prevalence and assayed the efficacy of these interventions with particular focus on Nigeria by identifying the risk factors causing its spread and recommending prevention strategies for best options in reducing rates of cervical cancer in Nigeria.A systematic literature approach was used for the review of studies. This was carried out through database search on the prevalence, risk, mortality, factors and intervention for cervical cancer in developing countries with a narrative analysis to explanation for the local, national and international interventions. The findings revealed that lack of a national policy on cervical cancer on awareness, treatment, prevention and control, limit intervention efforts. Furthermore, massive overlaps in the international intervention programme, paucity of data on the analysis of impact and efficacy of these interventions, including unavailability of vaccine for high risk HPV stymie efforts for the reduction of cervical cancer in Nigeria. It was further established that the lack of a national policy on cervica...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common degenerative disease of the nervous system, whose incidence increases with age. Despite increasing progress in the treatment of PD, resulting from development of diagnostic methods and experimental research into the understanding of the essence of this disease, an increase in the severity of disability is still observed with the passing time. Physiotherapy is one of the non-pharmacological methods, which through its complexity, phases and regularity is aimed at preventing early physical disability as well as permanent disability. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of rehabilitation on the severity of the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease, depending on the severity of the disease. The conclusion that may be drawn is that systematically conducted rehabilitation reduces the consequences of Parkinson's disease, allows for improvement in daily activities. The use of physical rehabilitation improves the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease.

Today, the silent epidemic of thyroid disease is not only a universal phenomenon but also a reflection of how people have lost their collective voice. Silence and powerlessness go hand in hand. When we suppress our ability to speak our truth, we manifest it in the physical. Women are ten times more likely than men to be diagnosed with thyroid disease, of which 80 percent is autoimmune. Yet, most of us have no idea about the thyroid, its needs, or how we got here. What is happening?Autoimmunity exits when the body decides that healthy cells are foreign invaders and mounts an attack against itself. In this unfortunate case of “friendly fire,” our bodies become reluctant victims of our environment and our choices—from the foods we eat to the thoughts we think. The attack of Self defines the Age of Victimhood. We are the cause of our disease. Victimhood is not only a state of dependency but also a wake-up call. This book connects the dots between science and intuition to answer the question of how we find full healing. There is no reason to accept the status quo of “living with thyroid disease” when you can heal yourself by coming into balance. Because balance is found in Nature, a return to Nature for real food is as important as a return to the heart for speaking truth. The power to heal is a choice to be responsible to yourself. In autoimmune disease, the moment you stop attacking yourself is the moment antibodies cease to exist. When you focus attention to healing vs. disease ...

Reticulocytosis is an important previously unappreciated surrogate marker of recent Plasmodium falciparum reticulocyte parasitation. Evidence from studies in murine and primate models show increased prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum parasitisation of reticulocytes. The increase in reticulocyte infection has been attributed to compensatory reticulocytosis and increased parasite densities. However, the prevalence of P. falciparum parasitisation of reticulocytes in human populations in holoendemic areas of malaria is unknown. Therefore, the current study examined the prevalence of P. falciparum parasitation of reticulocytes and its association with clinical, parasitological and haematological outcomes in children and adults with acute P. falciparum malaria and healthy malaria -ve controls from a holoendemic area of malaria of western Kenya. Results of this study demonstrate higher prevalence of reticulocyte parasitation in children. Thus, it seems likely that P. falciparum reticulocyte parasitation leads to a burst in compensatory reticulocytosis in acute paediatric malaria predictable by HDP and a febrile illness among children

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. In the United States, asthma affects more than 22 million persons. It is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood, affecting more than 6 million children (current asthma prevalence, National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005) (NHIS 2005). There have been important gains since the release of the first National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) clinical practice guidelines in 1991. For example, the number of deaths due to asthma has declined, even in the face of an increasing prevalence of the disease (NHIS 2005); fewer patients who have asthma report limitations to activities; and an increasing proportion of people who have asthma receive formal patient education (Department of Health and Human Services, Healthy People 2010 midcourse review).

Caring for children with heart disease is extremely complex, requiring a different and often tailor-made approach compared with adults with similar cardiac problems. Built on the success of previous editions and brought to you by a stellar author team, Pediatric Cardiology: The Essential Pocket Guide provides a unique, concise and extremely practical overview of heart disease in children. From history-taking, physical examination, ECG, and chest X-ray – the basics that enable clinicians to uncover possible problems and eliminate areas of false concern – it goes on to examine the range of more complex topics in the diagnosis and treatment/management of childhood cardiovascular disease. New to this edition you’ll find: An enhanced section on imaging including recent advances in cardiac MRI and fetal echocardiography. New techniques in genetic testing for heart disease in special populations. Much more emphasis on the importance of echocardiography in understanding the pathophysiology of congenital cardiac malformations. Expanded section on cardiac conditions in the neonate, specifically on prenatal diagnosis and management, neonatal screening for congenital heart disease, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Expanded and updated congestive cardiac failure section, including the latest in genetic and metabolic causes of heart failure, and medical/surgical treatment options; discussion of bridging therapies; essentials of transplantation, including common drug treatment regimens, clinical recognition of treatment complications and rejection, outcomes, morbidity and survival. In addition, every chapter is fully updated with the very latest clinical guidelines and management options from the AHA, ACC and ESC.
