This book examines the traditional mechanisms for conflict resolution in Africa using Igboland in Nigeria as a case study. The seeming failure of modern methods of conflict resolution has reinforced the turn to traditional mechanisms as the people appear to have more confidence in extant methods of resolving conflicts. The conflict between Aguleri/Umuleri communities in Igboland justifies the use of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms giving the elusive quest for peace within the modern conflict resolution apparatus in the post colonial Nigerian State. In the final analysis after over 100 years of dispute, the book argues that it was through the traditional peace process initiated by the Umuada women group and discussion within the village assembly comprising of male folk and final consummation through oath-taking that led to the successful resolution of the conflict.

Conflict Resolution holds the promise of freeing approaches and policies with regard to politics of identity from the fatalistic grip of realism. While the conceptual literature on identity and conflicts has moved in this alternative direction, conflict resolution practice continues to rely on realist frames and acts as an unwanted auxiliary to traditional International Relations (IR). Perpetuation of conflict discourses, marginalization, and exclusion of affected populations are widespread. They are caused by the over-reliance of conflict resolution practice on the binary frames of classic IR paradigms and also by the competitive and hierarchical relationships within the field itself.Philip Gamaghelyan relies on participatory action research (PAR) and collective auto-ethnography to expose patterns of exclusion and marginalization as well as the paradoxical reproduction of conflict-promoting frames in current conflict-resolution practice applied to the Nagorno-Karabakh and Syrian crises. He builds on the work of post-modernist scholars, on reflective practice, and on discourse analysis to explore alternative and inclusive strategies with a transformative potential through reflections and actions customary for PAR.The IR discipline, that has dominated policy-making, is only one possible lens, and often a deficient one, for defining, preventing, or resolving contemporary conflicts wrapped in identity politics. Other conceptual frameworks can help to rethink our understanding of...

The "Just the Tools" edition of "Conflict Resolution for Couples" is an abbreviated version of Paul Shaffer's first book, "Conflict Resolution for Couples" - originally published in 2005, and then re-published in 2011. This leaner edition "cuts to the chase" of couple's conflict resolution, without the foundational and special population sections that made the original book a much meatier but time-consuming work. "Just the Tools", while a stand-alone title, also serves as a companion book to Paul's "Top 10 Marriage Essentials" published in 2014 (and the "Top 10 Dating Essentials" projected for 2015). It retains the same comprehensive, easy-to-understand, and logical progression found in the original. This book consists of essentially two parts:Part I is about the tools for resolution. It presents a model for managing conflict and itemizes 26 guidelines (the ABC's of conflict resolution) for identifying, validating, processing and resolving issues.Part II discusses strategies for change. It focuses on initiating and maintaining change, understanding lack of change, and healthy routines to support lasting change.

Is ""political reconciliation"" a new tool for peace-building and justice--in peace processes and other complex social reconstruction efforts-after dictatorship or civil wars? Or is it just another term for established practices like negotiation, conflict resolution, and cooperation? Reconciliation processes after conflict and war can be very different in form and content. Kjell-Ake Nordquist analyzes the concept of reconciliation from a political perspective and outlines an understanding of its characteristics in a comparison with its closest ""conceptual relatives"": forgiveness and conflict resolution. In addition, Nordquist specifically addresses the structural dimensions of reconciliation, and formulates an understanding of reconciliation that identifies a specific contribution to the settlement of political conflicts. In this way, political reconciliation has the potential to be an approach that, along with other activities, contributes to more complete and genuine peace processes.""In this timely and important book, Nordquist develops the concept of 'political reconciliation' and thereby adds to one of the most pivotal questions for contemporary peace processes: how reconciliation promotes conflict resolution. Building on both theoretical insights and practical experiences, Nordquist is able to provide a holistic analysis of ethical and political challenges in reconciliation processes. This is a significant study for poli...

"Success has many parents but failure is an orphan". It is well to bear in mind as we look at India Pakistan relations since 1947. The India-Pakistan conflict is considered to be one of the most intractable conflicts in the world. The history of Indo-Pak relations has been mainly a story of conflict and discord, mutual distrust and suspicion. The relations between the two countries have shifted from conflict to de-escalation to conflict and again to de-escalation but very seldom to cooperation. On occasions some silver lines of cooperation appears and then it is quickly covered by thick clouds of mistrust. The study will look into some of the instances where Track Two Diplomacy has resulted in conflict resolution between India and Pakistan, and how it has made a significant contribution in pushing forward the peace processes and has developed new ideas for "sustainable security."

The need to adapt, transform and broaden alternative dispute resolution processes is necessary to address new challenges in the field of conflict resolution. An unexplored challenge in the dispute resolution community is how to address the role of value and identity issues in mediation. Occasionally, value or identity issues will become overt in a transactional specific case dispute, creating challenges for the third party facilitator to assist those in conflict with their effort to reach a resolution. Using contextual theory as a framework to analyze value based identity conflict (VBIC) issues in mediation, this thesis project explores: the role of values and identity in a mediation process; how VBIC can be identified by a third party facilitator during a problem-solving mediation; and how a third party facilitator can address VBIC characteristics and issues once the mediation process has begun. Utilizing the knowledge and experience of academics and practitioners from the dispute resolution field, this research suggests a variety of ways to identify and address VBIC issues during a mediation process.

By using the lessons of this book, readers will be able to apply a thorough, proven method-summarized in ten steps-for resolving conflicts. Following these steps, leaders can analyze a conflict and move toward its resolution with more assurance of a positive outcome for everyone involved.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject History - World History - Basics, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Faculty of Social Sciences), language: English, abstract: The Dagbon chieftaincy dispute is an old phenomenon in the historical epoch of chieftaincy and dispute in Ghana. This social and political crisis in the Dagbon kingdom can be traced from the colonial period around the 1948s and events preceding the enskinment of Naa Mahama III. Various research and efforts has been put in place to unite the two feuding Royal Gates but in vain. However, the attention of scholars on the theme never focused much attention on the Dagbon Traditional Installation Mechanism as an alternative dispute resolution. It is based on this outlook that the researcher employed all the necessary tools of social research such as qualitative approach with data from selected key interviews mostly from leaders in the kingdom and previous literature for the exploration of the Dagbon traditional installation mechanisms as an alternative conflict resolution approach. To a very large extent, the protracted nature of the dispute is attributable to the laxity of stakeholders to realize the potency of the Dagbon traditional installation mechanism. Given the dynamics of the Dagbon chieftaincy conflict, the study takes a closer look at the Dagbon traditional installation mechanisms as an alternative means to providing a lasting solution to the chieftaincy dispute in the Dagbon kingd...

The Dynamics of Conflict When it was published in 2000, Bernie Mayer's The Dynamics of Conflict Resolution quickly became one of the seminal works in the conflict resolution field. The book bridged the gap between abstract theoretical approaches and practical handbooks and became an immensely valuable and accessible resource for experienced and novice practitioners, as well as for professors and students of conflict management who needed a deep yet practical view of conflict and methods for dealing with it. The Dynamics of Conflict is the second edition of Mayer's classic book. While building on the strengths of the first edition, this thoroughly revised and updated book keeps pace with the most current trends and research in the field and explores four key concepts: interactional dynamics, system dynamics, culture and conflict, and conflict engagement. Like the first edition, the focus of the new edition is on the ways we can productively think about conflict and conflict intervention, rather than on specific techniques and processes. Mayer presents ideas about conflict as a set of conceptual tools that build on one another and contribute to a multifaceted view of conflict and conflict intervention but that also stand on their own. Filled with illustrative examples, the book draws from the author's thirty years of experience with interpersonal, family, community, organizational, labor management, environmental, public policy, and international disputes and includes instances of conflicts that have been in the news. In addition, this vital resource contains information on the most important work that has been done in the past decade on culture, systems, and conflict engagement and shows how conflict concepts apply to new technologies such as online communication and conflict resolution efforts on the Web. In the concluding chapter Mayer explores how conflict intervention efforts fit into more general values about peace, democracy, and social justice, and the personal impact that conflict work as a field has on conflict specialists.

Feminist Theory and Structuralist Analysis is used to problematize the issue of the UN response to sexual violence in conflict, with particular attention placed on women. Guatemala and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are the foci for my two core case studies, however I consider the problems I raise to be experienced universally/globally, which is demonstrated with reference to other case studies and conflicts. It is my belief that the UN resolution is inadequate in addressing the multi-layered problems women in conflict and post-conflict situations face daily. Since the resolution does not exist in a vacuum I have considered the department which created the resolution as well as other actors involved in the implementation of such resolutions. The themes within this book include not only sexual violence, women, the UN & International Law but also structural problems related to poverty & the global political economy. This work demonstrates the universal nature of the structural problems, as well as the connections between poverty, regional destabilization and sexual violence (against women). Scholars of IR, Gender & Development will find this book most useful and interesting.

Projektarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Thema: Völkerrecht und Menschenrechte, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Humanitarian intervention is an issue at the centre of international relations and is shrouded in uncertainty. The logic supporting humanitarian intervention is clear in that it aims to save lives and end conflict. Yet, many questions remain as to what is the correct approach to humanitarian intervention. This dissertation aims to clarify these questions through exploring a cosmopolitan approach to humanitarian intervention. Drawing on extensive research, a thin cosmopolitan approach is promoted as the most feasible within the current international order. This approach is developed through an exploration of ethical cosmopolitanism which addresses such questions as when to intervene, who may intervene and how to execute the intervention. A cosmopolitan approach also requires institutional change but the more radical and traditional ideas that cosmopolitanism is associated with such as the creation of a world government or a world army clash with the contemporary international order of states. For this reason, a regional humanitarian intervention force alongside a thin cosmopolitan ethical basis capable of functioning within the current international order will be proposed.Ultimately, having utilized the framework of the contemporary international order it is concluded that a cosmopolitan approach to humanitarian intervention is f...

Introduces a revolutionary, quadratic-programming based approach to solving long-standing problems in motion planning and control of redundant manipulators This book describes a novel quadratic programming approach to solving redundancy resolutions problems with redundant manipulators. Known as ``QP-unified motion planning and control of redundant manipulators'' theory, it systematically solves difficult optimization problems of inequality-constrained motion planning and control of redundant manipulators that have plagued robotics engineers and systems designers for more than a quarter century. An example of redundancy resolution could involve a robotic limb with six joints, or degrees of freedom (DOFs), with which to position an object. As only five numbers are required to specify the position and orientation of the object, the robot can move with one remaining DOF through practically infinite poses while performing a specified task. In this case redundancy resolution refers to the process of choosing an optimal pose from among that infinite set. A critical issue in robotic systems control, the redundancy resolution problem has been widely studied for decades, and numerous solutions have been proposed. This book investigates various approaches to motion planning and control of redundant robot manipulators and describes the most successful strategy thus far developed for resolving redundancy resolution problems. Provides a fully connected, systematic, methodological, consecutive, and easy approach to solving redundancy resolution problems Describes a new approach to the time-varying Jacobian matrix pseudoinversion, applied to the redundant-manipulator kinematic control Introduces The QP-based unification of robots' redundancy resolution Illustrates the effectiveness of the methods presented using a large number of computer simulation results based on PUMA560, PA10, and planar robot manipulators Provides technical details for all schemes and solvers presented, for readers to adopt and customize them for specific industrial applications Robot Manipulator Redundancy Resolution is must-reading for advanced undergraduates and graduate students of robotics, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, tracking control, neural dynamics/neural networks, numerical algorithms, computation and optimization, simulation and modelling, analog, and digital circuits. It is usual to evaluate EU actorness in different fields of action based on the requirements for EU actorness in general. There is hardly any work suggesting specific requirements for EU actorness in one of the fields of action. The aim of this paper is to open a new pathway in the European studies by introducing specific requirements for EU actorness in conflict resolution. New requirements for EU actorness in conflict resolution were drawn from the re-organized order of general requirements for EU actorness and conflict resolution theory. First, EU external influence capabilities were investigated. Then, these requirements were applied in the cases of the Macedonian and Georgian conflicts. In the end of each case, lessons were drawn for practical use. The result came in this paper is that while the EU meets the requirements of capabilities and recognition (partially) in both of the cases, it suffers from the absence of the convergence of the preferences of EU member states. In general, both the theoretical and empirical findings of this paper are new in their field and highlight many questions for further research.

This conflict has not only affected human race but also the environmental race. The study specifically established resources and how they have precipitated conflicts; the effects of the conflict; challenges involved in resolving this conflict and livelihood strategies and resolution mechanisms adopted. The findings revealed that, resource based conflicts have negatively impacted on pastoral livelihood and conservation as well. QINP conservation policies have not considered effective coexistence between the park and the pastoral community. The Government of Uganda could use this work to create a ground of building trust as an approach to reconcile conflicting parties. Policy makers and practitioners will be aided by this book to generate appropriate policies and guidelines towards addressing resource based conflicts in developing countries and the world at large.

This book presents Kenya's experience with power sharing as the "tool kit" for conflict resolution following the 2007/2008 post election violence (PEV) and the subsequent post conflict reconstruction processes. The author gives an account of the intrigues within the power sharing arrangement; a phenomenon that he characterizes and describes as 'elite fragmentation'. Consequently, the fragmented elite engaged in power struggles that were detrimental to the post conflict reconstruction agenda that they had 'agreed on' during the peace process that was negotiated by Kofi Annan. The study provides an interesting analysis of the Kenyan political culture , using Mill's Power elite theory. It goes further to give an account of the state of the reform process; particularly on institutional reform, reconciliation, transitional justice and management of the electoral process under the ODM/PNU coalition government from 2008- 2012.Possible policy proposals that can guide an effective post conflict recovery framework are advanced at the end of the book. The book provides a good understanding of peacekeeping in a typical African neo - patrimonial political market place (with Kenya as a case study)

Preventing violent conflicts and establishing comprehensive lasting peace in some of the world’s most turbulent regions has become the new global imperative. But to be effective, peacebuilding must be a multilateral, not a unilateral process. Even for the world’s sole surviving superpower, promoting and sustaining durable peace requires communication, co-ordination, co-operation, and collaboration between local, national and international actors, nongovernmental as well as governmental. In this book, Dennis Sandole explores the theory and practice of peacebuilding, discussing the differences and similarities between core aspects of peace processes, namely violent conflict prevention; conflict management; conflict settlement; conflict resolution and conflict transformation. Assuming no prior knowledge on the part of the student reader, the volume distinguishes between proactive and reactive peacebuilding as strategies to pre-empt or otherwise respond to global problems, such as identity conflicts, failing/failed states, terrorism, pandemics, poverty, forced migrations, climate change, ecological degradation, and their combined effects. Drawing on a wide range of conflicts such as Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, East Timor, Haiti, South Africa and Macedonia, the book debates the 'lessons learned' from past experiences of reactive as well as proactive peacebuilding, plus the challenges which lie ahead for those striving to bring about sustainable peace, security and stability to war-torn or otherwise fragile regions of the globe.

Reporting on a foreign war or a crisis is a challenging activity, a true professional test for a journalist. Media is often criticized for promoting violence by its conflict reporting: either by staying detached or by being biased.Peace, or conflict-sensitive, journalism was created for improvement of conflict coverage: it emphasizes the active role of journalists in de-escalation of conflict and encourages them to report on peaceful solutions. This relatively novel approach might be met with skepticism, as it appears too idealistic and demanding to be followed by journalists. In order to verify the applicability of peace journalism, this book presents a comparative analysis of six US, UK and German newspapers on how conflict-sensitive, or at least balanced, they were in their reporting on the Russia-Georgia war of 2008. The content analysis of those six media has demonstrated that the peace journalism approach is not easy to implement into practice due to some imperfections of its models; its parameters need to become more feasible and more specific. The case study has showed that those particular western media were neither conflict-sensitive nor war-oriented in their coverage of the Russia-Georgia war, and thus they kept the in-between stance. Overall, the reporting was balanced, particularly in its negative attitude towards all parties involved in the conflict.

This study explored the differences in mindfulness qualities between various conflict regulation styles and attachment styles. Differences in relationship satisfaction were also examined in various conflict regulation styles. Seventy-nine individuals who have been in a monogamous relationship for at least one year and are co-habiting completed an online survey comprised of the Freiberg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI), Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II (ROCI-II), Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory-Revised (ECR-R) and Multidimensional Relationship Questionnaire (MRQ). Results revealed significant differences in mindfulness and relationship satisfaction between conflict regulation styles. These results suggest that mindfulness qualities of openness, acceptance and non-judgment can be enhanced in clinical settings to improve conflict regulation outcomes and relationship satisfaction regardless of an individual's adult attachment orientation.

Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: South Asia, grade: A (sehr gut/excellent), Victoria University of Wellington, course: Regional integration in Southeast Asia, 51 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Focusing on ASEAN's relevance as a regional security organisation, this study aims to expound the prevailing driving forces, interests and obstacles to an effective crisis management. Drawing on the theoretical background of neo-realist and constructivist approaches, the paper argues that neither the neo-realist nor the constructivist approach is able to fully conceptualise ASEAN's role in regional security. While only an eclectic, multi-dimensional approach grasps the variety of its multiple facets, the latter seems to be highly contingent on the interplay of external structural and internal sociological dynamics. While the organisation appears in this out sketched context as a relatively important player in times of political and economic stability, having its merits in conflict-preventive measures through the building of trust and the construction of a common identity, the regime shows strong enervations in times of crisis.

Postconflict society characterised by positive peace requires a demobilised mindset amongst not only former-combatants but also those mobilised more broadly within conflict. Until now demobilisation programmes have taken a traditional understanding of conflict focusing on armaments rather than psychologies, ideologies and cultures. This has led to an unnatural distinction being made between combatants and civilians where such division is increasingly less evident in fighting. It has also caused demobilisation to be continually paired with disarmament, emphasising the military element of conflict. This ignores the broader sense in which people are mobilised in conflicts. This study considers the DDR programme in Sierra Leone and examines how its standards for registration provide an indication as to what it is to be mobilised during conflict. The overly militaristic approach to DDR taken ignores alternative, non-combative roles at the broader level of involvement in conflict. A case study of women in the Sierra Leonean conflict is used to demonstrate how this group in both combative and non-combative capacities is excluded from DDR programmes.

On the heels of ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia, the international community created a free market space in Bosnia known as the Arizona Market. The Arizona Market was an attempt at post-conflict reconstruction via neo-liberal reform, but it gained notoriety for its active trade in sexual services, with UN peacekeepers becoming clients of ‘trafficked’ women. This dissertation forwards a feminist critique of the reconstruction effort, and argues that an ideologically-rooted focus on free market reform resulted in a decontextualized approach to the rebuilding of Bosnia. The pitfalls of this approach are evident in the international community’s regulation of ‘trafficking’ in the Arizona Market, which overlooked the complexities of ‘transactional sex’ in this space. This dissertation is not prescriptive. Nevertheless, by focusing on women’s autonomy, and on the social contingencies of ‘peacekeeping masculinity’, it enriches an understanding of post-war sites, and thus contributes to a more comprehensive approach to their regulation.

The European Union is concerned by ethnic conflicts that are on its borders and can threaten the security of the EU from outside and inside. Examining the cases of South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria and Cyprus, this research investigates to what extent the European Union is committed to ethnic conflict resolution. Hypothesizing that EU direct involvement in the conflict resolution process is more successful than the mediated efforts and the failure of the European Union to assist territorial entities sharpens the secessionist trends, the theories of third party intervention, credible commitment theory and the costs and benefits theory form the theoretical framework of this research. The review of the literature formed basis to understand the EU policies and tools deployed for the conflict prevention in the cases selected, on which the applied theoretical framework created strong bases to make conclusions. The EU direct involvement in the conflict resolution process is more effective. Rejecting the second hypothesis the argument becomes valid emphasizing that EU assistance, substantial or not, does not affect the conflicting territories' decision to secede.

In the past, many researchers have largely been devoted and scholarly works produced on institutions of conflict management. And a growing concern was recorded on the vitality of customary institutions on the process. However, most were very generalized and found no to explain the case in all areas especially to indigenous people who detached from state encroachment and where customary institutions mark a basis for conflict resolution.Emergence of state institutions to indigenous societies cannot as such directly challenge customary laws and dichotomy was not always to exist. Rather, customary institutions set their set of adaptive mechanisms which sometimes reverse the power relation. Therefore, this book provides a new insight on state-customary relation in pastoral conflict management explaining in terms of their basic essentialities, actual implementation and changes with regimes. The analysis of this work will be important for future efforts to integrated implementation of the formal and customary laws in conflict resolution. It is expected that this book can be used as an important resource for researchers interested in further exploration of the issue under study.

Conflict is generally regarded as disagreement regarding interests or ideas. Conflict is a fact of life in any organizations as longer as people compete for jobs, resources, power, recognition and security. In addition, dealing with conflicts is a great challenge to management. Similarly, whistle blowing means calling attention to wrongdoing that is occurring within an organization. Now-a-days every organization undergoes conflicts among the employees, trade unions or even the management. Conflict up to a certain limit is good for the organization for its growth. But when conflict grows and turns into whistle blowing intention among the employees, it becomes harmful for the organization. In this book, it is shown how the two elements are corelated with each other.

Therefore, the main reason of conducting this research is to find out the sources of conflict, to identify conflict resolution techniques and to know the positive and negative outcomes of conflict in the organization. Among the factors that accounted for the existence of conflict in the organization, perpetual difference, value difference, modern technology and personality clashes were the most important. The effort of management to understand the existing conflict in the organization is low which implies the weakness of management of the organization in handling conflict. In general, undertaking conflict and assessing conflict management practice is important task for the reduction of problems which exist in the organization.

China successfully used the Olympics as a tool of public diplomacy with a positive impact on its politics, economics and environment. But how did Beijing beat the odds to stage the most spectacular Olympic event in history; and with what impact? China's Public Diplomacy is reinforced and undercut by authoritarianism... Yet, global status demands more transparency and greater accountability. As PD becomes increasingly indispensable in the management of external affairs, China's Olympic experience offers wider lessons. This book examines a topical issue of growing currency and wide relevancy to PD; puts the Olympics in a national and international context; highlights the paradox of China's Public Diplomacy; underscores China's successful national brand image as an emerging global power; offers valuable insights into deeper understanding of the rising China and its importance as a workshop of the world. The book is, therefore, a pleasant, interesting and invaluable reading for students and practitioners of diplomacy as well as those interested in modern China and contemporary international relations.

Hence, the rapport between war and peace is being determined by the approach or position of diplomacy. Since the failure of diplomacy usually laid the basis for the start of war, and after all wars, peace often reign, it is of enormous significance to recognize the important relationship between war and diplomacy. Like all civil wars, the Nigerian civil war was unique in the context of the nation's history. This is because it was the most vivid expression of a country turned against itself. As with civil wars in other countries, the Nigerian civil war can be analyzed within the context of a failed diplomatic act. Hence, this paper discussed the position of negotiation or peace talk before and after the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970. It has also looked at the general impact of diplomacy during the period of the crisis.

It is also a valuable working resource for practicing robotics engineers and systems designers and industrial researchers.
