It defines education and what a secondary school education mean and it tresses the growths of education in Tanzania. Just as preferred by (Samra and Rajan, 2006) in most cases in the context of this work primary and secondary education are treated together, because they are inextricably linked in so many ways, and because success at the secondary level is fundamentally dependent on getting the basics right at the primary level. In its briefest sense the work is divided into introduction, discussion of different factors influencing education quality in the context of Tanzania and it provides way forward to curb the withering factors to quality education and its conclusion is made forth.

Advances in Research and Praxis in Special Education in Africa, Caribbean, and the Middle East

This edited volume explores various issues pertaining to the education of children with disabilities in Africa, the Caribbean and Middle East. As a group, persons with disabilities have been subjected to social, culturaland educational exclusions of various forms and for various socially-scripted reasons. In education, forinstance, individuals with disabilities have been altogether excluded from educational participation in manyparts of the developing world or they have been excluded from pursuing meaningfully beneficial higherlevels of education in developed countries like the United States. One of the social responses/remedies to thewidely-acknowledged exclusionary practices experienced by learners with disabilities has been the widespread implementation of inclusive practicesin the education of individuals with disabilities across countries, in the west and the developing regions of the world. A distinctive marker of differencein the way inclusive practices have been enacted in western countries versus those in the developing world has primarily stemmed from the fact thatmajority of western countries operate under funded mandates that also regulate the provision of education to persons with disabilities. While the idealof inclusion has been highly desirable, many of countries in the developing world have floundered in their implementation due to lack sound legislativeframework to guide implementation coupled with socio-cultural factors related to negative perceptions of dis...

A volume in Critical Constructions: Studies On Education and SocietySeries Editors: Curry Stephenson Malott, West Chester University of Pennsylvania; Brad J. Porfilio, California State University, East Bay; Marc Pruyn, Monash University; and Derek R. Ford, Syracuse UniversityThis edited volume contributes to a burgeoning field of critical scholarship on the news media and education. This scholarship is based on an understanding that the news media has increasingly applied a neoliberal template that mediates knowledge and action about education. This book calls into question what the public knows about education, how the public is informed, and whose interests are represented and ultimately served through the production and distribution of information by the news media about education. The chapters comprising this volume serve to enlighten and call to action parents, students, educators, academics and scholars, activists, and policymakers for social, political, and economic transformation. Moreover, as the neoliberal agenda in North America intensifies, the chapters in this book help to deepen our understanding of the logics and processes of the neoliberal privatization of education and the accompanying social discourses that facilitate the reduction of social relations to a transaction in the marketplace. The chapters examine the news media and the reproduction of neoliberal educational reforms (A Nation at Risk, Teach For America, charter schools, think tanks, and PISA) and ...

The entrenchment of this technology in everyday life necessitates a critical examination of the roles it can play in education. A varied cross-section of case studies in mobile education was selected and analyzed with the primary aim of providing a critical landscape of mobile education and the secondary aim of extrapolating frameworks from usage patterns. Exemplar case studies were reviewed for insight into mobile education and synthesized into a framework using meta-ethnography. Academic Paper from the year 2012 in the subject Pedagogy - Higher Education, grade: Post Doctoral, University of Teesside (Teesside University | Business School), course: NA, language: English, abstract: This paper looks to 'The Institute of Digital Innovation' (IDI), based in the North East of England. Being a recently conceived establishment the IDI has developed a forward-thinking pedagogy that supports and equips budding entrepreneurs with the necessary skills for commercial success, and is thus in keeping with current policy rhetoric that future economic growth will depend on private enterprise. But perhaps more importantly, these authors argue, the IDI embodies a broader vision than the health of the economy alone; it both reflects and projects a changing culture in which the signature of success lies less in 'quantity' (wealth and conspicuous consumption) but in 'quality', which Inglehart defines as "belonging, self-expression, and the quality of life" (1990, p.11). Drawing on qualitative primary data provided by both IDI staff and Fellows, we conclude that a more culturally relevant approach to education is called for: Innovative and progressive pedagogical thinking will provide an educational model better equipped to accommodate both a sustainable economy, and the cultural shifts that are reshaping the desires and preferences of younger generations. The previous decade has seen a mushrooming of academic commentary on the pedagogic und...

Globalization has challenged and changed roles for governments, non-profits, and non-governmental institutions for countries in the Global South. It has similarly spawned the births of numerous manifestations of non-governmental institutions, which potentially complement the approximately 7,000-9,000 higher education institutions that exist worldwide. Improving education is an oft-cited goal of many countries' development efforts-including Kenya, in her most recent Vision 2030 plan for development-yet many scholars and students alike fall short when they deem only primary or secondary education as the main avenues to realize development goals. This exploratory, qualitative study considers if Kenyan higher education public or private institutions play a role in the country's development process.

This approach is still valid at the present time asit provides one of the best ways of initially structuring our understanding of teachereducation at the macro level in order to facilitate communication of the situation crossnationallyand prepare the way for higher levels of analyses. To this end, the book hastwelve chapters: An introductory chapter details the focus of the book. This is followedby a chapter on each of the ten regions. Each of these chapters, written by an expert in thefield:focuses on general trends in teacher education rather than on any specific aspect of it;focuses primarily on pre-service teacher education at the primary and post-primary levels, although some referenceis also made to continuing professional development;strikes a balance between past, present and future trends;deals broadly with access to, the processes involved in, and the structure of, teacher education;has a unique structure rather than one based upon a formulaic approach. In the final chapter major themes are distilled from the case studies. It also outlines how the book furthers understanding ofteacher education inte...

Architecture in Context: Designing in the Middle East provides a foundation for understanding the critical context of architecture and design in this region. It does this by: presenting a practical overview of architectural know-how in the Middle East, and its potential for cultivating a sense of place introducing local architectural vocabularies and styles, and how they can still be reactivated in contemporary design exploring the cultural and contextual meaning of forms as references that may influence contemporary architecture discussing important discourses and trends in architecture that allow a rethinking of the current global/local dichotomy. Highly illustrated, the book covers architecture and design in North Africa, the Levant, the Gulf, and Turkey, Iran and Iraq.

Australia is a vast sparsely populated land and from an early date this createdproblems in terms of providing educational facilities. As part of the solution thenation has had a long tradition of using distance education methods to providean education for its isolated primary and secondary school students. WesternAustralia epitomises the problems inherent in having a large land area with ahighly urbanised population and a small but scattered rural one. Initially, theState established a Correspondence School in 1918. There have been variousdevelopments since then, culminating in the establishment of the Schools of Isolatedand Distance Education (SIDE) in 1995. Since then the staff at SIDE haveinvestigated and developed ways of providing their students with innovative educational materials in an effort toensure that the best possible services are provided.Despite its innovative nature, very little research has been conducted on SIDE. The research project reported inthis book is one contribution to rectifying the deficit. It had three main aims. The first was to develop an understandingof the emergence of SIDE. Secondly, an understanding of the key functions of SIDE was sought. Thethird aim was to develop an understanding of the issues which present themselves for those working at SIDE..Implications for policy, practice and future research in relation to the education of children in geographicallyremote regions through distance education are deduced, and not just in relationto t...

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Sociology - Knowledge and Information, grade: A, Atlantic International University (School of Social and Human Studies), course: Doctorate in Education, language: English, abstract: The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of individual student affective factors and educational background on mathematics achievement among higher education students as measured by semester grades in the core mathematics courses. Student Locus of Control, Self-Efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were the specific individual student affective factors that were examined in the study. Educational backgrounds of the students were examined as an attempt to explain the differences in mathematics performance at the higher education level. To achieve this, high school teacher characteristics and instructional practices in influencing students' affective factors were examined. All of the analyses presented were performed on data collected for the study from two institutions of higher education in Cameroon for the student participants and from high school mathematics teachers of the English-Speaking and the French-Speaking subsystems of education. The results of the study show that student internal locus of control, high mathematics self-efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were associated with performance in mathematics at the higher education level. Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Pedagogy - School Pedagogics, grade: A, Atlantic International University, language: English, abstract: This study was carried out in Kabale district to ascertain the factors responsible for poor academic performance in secondary schools. Both purposive and simple random sampling methods were used to select respondents. Both primary data and secondary data was collected and analyzed. A number of studies have found out that there are various factors that are responsible for a poor academic performance in secondary schools. However, there is a gap in studies of low academic performance in Kabale district. Academic performance is undoubtedly a research drive at the heart of educators, teachers, psychologists, policy makers, parents and guardians, social workers etc. in their attempts to investigate what determines academic outcomes of learners, they have come up with more questions than answers. In recent, prior literature has shown that learning outcomes (academic achievement and academic performance) have been determined by such variables as family, schools, society and motivational factors.National governments have tried to invest heavily in education in order to improve accessibility and quality of education both the secondary and primary schools. They have however not taken university education as a priority. The upper secondary education however has received little attention by governments and donor agencies a...

Most parents dream of giving their children the best possible education. However an education – primary, secondary and tertiary – costs money. Parents of a child born in 2006 can pay approximately $250K for a child's lifetime education according to the latest research from the Australian Scholarships Group. And costs are constantly on the rise. Investing in Your Child's Future is aimed at parents and future parents, grandparents and other family members, and covers children's education from pre-school to tertiary studies. It is designed to show readers how they can secure and contribute to their children's future and can benefit from a higher education at the institution of their choice, without sacrificing their lifestyle or financial security, and regardless of their income. Investing in Your Child's Future shows readers how they can finance all, or some, of their children's education by planning ahead, implementing simple strategies and saving money as early and as regularly as possible. When your children are young, it's easy to delay funding their education as it is not an immediate expense. However, education is a major expense, regardless of whether you choose a private or public education, and the sooner you start saving, the more money you will accumulate, and the sooner you can stop worrying about your child's future.

Abiot Tessema Meeting the Challenges of Quality and Financial Management

As education is of paramount importance to the overall development of any nation, it has found that the task of providing education to all who need it is an exceptional one. Since education costs money, many people in developing countries are unable to acquire quality education. In Ethiopia for example, the responsibility of providing education has for long been dominated by governments. In a situation where it has become very clear that government is unable to sustain continuous provision of adequate and high quality education, there can be no better option than to open the floodgate to private individuals and organizations in order to complement government efforts in education provision. The primary aim of this book is to identify the challenges that private higher education institutions (PHEIs) face to provide quality education. The study uses qualitative and quantitative methods incorporating a case study approach. PHEIs from Ethiopia are used as a case study. This study finds that lack of clear quality standards, government incentives, skilled human capital, books, technology, fund, and other facilities are major factors that prevent PHEIs from proving quality education.

Mehmet Ozan Asik Religious Education in Egypt - A Sociological Analysis of Contesting Religious Educational Institutions, Policies and Discourses

I here intend to examine the perceptions and practices of the state and different Islamist groups about the religious education in contemporary Egypt. Since the 1970s, the rise of Islamism in Egypt has created strife between the ruling elites and dissident Islamist groups to capture the religious discourse and control the religious socialization in the mass education. This strife has resulted in the emergence of alternative Islamic educational areas (private Islamic schools and Al-Azhar schools). In this context, I use hermeneutic method to analyze the religious educational discourses and institutions of these two main agents ruling elites and Islamist groups. The Mubarak regime in Egypt seeks to institutionalize a particular state discourse in religious education in accordance with its own interests. However, the important thing is the reactions of different Islamist (moderate and radical) groups to this state discourse and institutionalization. This book aims to shed light on the conflictual domain of religious education from the perspective of political sociology. It can be useful for researchers and scholars who study on Islam, the Middle East, religious education and Egypt.

This is the first book that probes the lived experiences of Chinese immigrant faculty inNorth American higher education institutions: their struggles, challenges, successes, etc.It explores how their past experiences in China have shaped who they are now, whatthey do and how they pursue their teaching, research, and service, as well as the realityof their everyday life that inevitably intertwines with their present and past diverse culturalbackgrounds and unique experiences.Different from previous books that explore immigrant/minority faculty defined ambiguously and broadly and from the theoreticalframework of ethnic relations, this book has a particular focus on mainland Chinese immigrant faculty, whichoffers a richer and deeper understanding of their cross-culture experiences through autoethnographic research and by multiplelenses. Through authors' vivid portray of the ebbs and flows of their life in the academe, readers will gain an enjoyableand holistic knowledge of the cultural, political, linguistic, scholarly, and personal issues contemporary Chineseimmigrant faculty encounter as they cross the border of multiple worlds. All contributors to this book had the experience of being the first-generation Chinese immigrants, and they either are currentlyteaching or used to teach in North American higher education institutions, who were born, brought up, educated in Mainland China and came to North Americafor graduate degrees from early 1980s to 2000.
