The lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are a group of related micro-organisms that are enormously important in the food and beverage industries. Generally regarded as safe for human consumption (and, in the case of probiotics, positively beneficial to human health), the LAB have been used for centuries, and continue to be used worldwide on an industrial scale, in food fermentation processes, including yoghurt, cheeses, fermented meats and vegetables, where they ferment carbohydrates in the foods, producing lactic acid and creating an environment unsuitable for food spoilage organisms and pathogens to survive. Faisalabad is known as a city of textile not only in Pakistan but also all over the world. Several textile processing units are in operation in the surroundings of the city, which are releasing a substantial amount of azo dyes into the wastewater streams in the surroundings of these textile units.The discharge of these contaminants is considered to be a potential threat to the environment because of their hazardous nature. Thus, this study was undertaken to isolate the bacteria possessing high potential to degrade azo dyes from the wastewater discharged by the textile units. A total of 150 bacterial strains were isolated from these wastewater samples using minimal salt medium spiked with Reactive Blue ZBLN azo dye. Results revealed that some bacterial strains were able to decolorize 8 different dyes almost within 6 hours. Thus, the isolated bacterial strains have the potential to remove a variety of dyes from the liquid culture, which could be used to develop a biotreatment strategy for cleanup of the industrial wastewater prior to their discharge into wastewater streams of the surrounding area.

The present study mainly focuses its attention on the investigation and the development of the biodegradable and biocompatible nanofi brillar poly(lactic acid) structures from poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) blends using the conventional melt spinning process (CMS) of thermoplastic polymer fibers. The CMS itself is a high productivity, solvent free and low energy consumption process. Owing to the combination of these outstanding benefi ts of the CMS and the "green" properties of PLA and PVAL, the studied and developed process provides an optimal solution for dealing with relevant challenges of our present age: the economic, highly productive and extremely eco-friendly fabrication of highly specialized products for biomedical applications such as scaffolds for tissue engineering. Another research activity gives special attention on the study of the morphological evolution of PLA/PVAL blend filaments along the spinline. Annually, tons of cellulosic waste is generated in urban areas in the form of newspaper, office paper etc. The present study was conducted for isolation of cellulolytic bacteria and to analyze their efficiency towards decomposition of cellulose urban waste that is newspaper. Isolation of potential cellulolytic bacteria and their ability to produce enzymes CMCase, FPase and β- glucosidase were studied. Cellulose is the basic structural material of plant cell wall, and as a result is the most plentiful carbohydrate that exists in environment. In the present study cellulose degrading bacterial isolate LC1 was isolated from decaying wood. Phenotypic characterization revealed that LC1 gram positive isolate belong to genus Bacillus cereus under accession number KC510288. Applicability of cellulolytic isolate LC1 was observed on one of cellulose urban waste i.e newspaper. This book, therefore, provides novel scopes and useful applications of microbes in industrial biotechnology, consequently waste will be managed and cellulase enzyme produced from these bacteria can be utilized for different biotechnological purposes conditions which will improve our environment and economy.

This study shows that bacterial species found in highly toxic environment are capable of degrading high toxic wastes like xenobiotic compounds, PAH etc. I had isolated bacteria from tannery soil that is highly toxic in nature. Bacterial species growing in such an environment are capable of sustaining in adverse condition and highly adaptable to condition that are unsustainable to other species. Bacterial species isolated from such an environment can be used for various bioremediation purposes. Though till now we could not find any literacy showing Bacillus spp. showing engine oil degrading potential, but in our present study we found Bacillus spp. showing the maximum oil degradation potential. It has some advantages over the Pseudomonas spp., as it is less pathogenic in comparison to the Pseudomonas spp. and can be handled in normal lab conditions and can also be recommended to use in bioremediation purposes in the treatment of engine oil as our study shows it giving the best cell density when growing on a media containing used engine oil.

The prevalence and characterization of pathogenic bacteria from fish cultured in ponds fertilized with organic manures was studied. Almost the same type of bacterial species were isolated from organic manures, ponds water and organs of fish. Chicken manure supported more bacterial species as proved by its high total aerobic bacterial count than cow manure. Total aerobic bacterial count differed significantly in different organs of fish in three ponds except in case of liver. High prevalence of Aeromonas sp. was found in all systems except in chicken manure treated pond, where Pseudomonas sp. was higher in percentage. Water and organic manures were the main source of Aeromonas sp, Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. Chicken manure was source of Proteus sp. and Serratia sp. while Serratia sp. was also isolated from cow manures. Zoonotic pathogens isolated from fish are important from veterinary public health point of view and a broad spectrum research is highly called for. These bacteria cause diseases including haemorrhage, fin rot, skin necrosis, chronic lesions on caudal fin, epizootic ulcerative syndrome and septicaemia in fish.

Hyaluronic acid is an essential part of connective, epithelial and neural tissues, and contributes to cell proliferation and migration. Hyaluronic Acid: Production, Properties, Application in Biology and Medicine consists of six chapters discussing the various issues of hyaluronic acid research. Hands act as reservoirs and as potential routes for the transmission of disease-causing agents. A research geared towards children was carried out with the aim of determining the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria carried on their hands and antimicrobial susceptibilities of these isolates. The skin provides protection by serving as an impenetrable barrier between bacteria-free tissues of the body and an environment that is contaminated with all types of microorganisms. These organisms were exemplified by Patty (2010); as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Coryneforms (those related to acne lesions), which are the possible pathogens that could be found on children's hands. Although S. epidermidis is not usually pathogenic, patients with compromised immune systems are often at risk for developing an infection. These infections can be both nosocomial or community acquired, but they pose a greater threat to hospital patients. This phenomenon may be the result of continuous use of antibiotics and disinfectants within hospitals, leading to evolutionary pressure toward more virulent strains of the organism. (Salyers, 2002 and Queck, 2008).

Bacteria in various habitats are subject to continuously changing environmental conditions, such as nutrient deprivation, heat and cold stress, UV radiation, oxidative stress, dessication, acid stress, nitrosative stress, cell envelope stress, heavy metal exposure, osmotic stress, and others. In order to survive, they have to respond to these conditions by adapting their physiology through sometimes drastic changes in gene expression. In addition they may adapt by changing their morphology, forming biofilms, fruiting bodies or spores, filaments, Viable But Not Culturable (VBNC) cells or moving away from stress compounds via chemotaxis. Changes in gene expression constitute the main component of the bacterial response to stress and environmental changes, and involve a myriad of different mechanisms, including (alternative) sigma factors, bi- or tri-component regulatory systems, small non-coding RNA’s, chaperones, CHRIS-Cas systems, DNA repair, toxin-antitoxin systems, the stringent response, efflux pumps, alarmones, and modulation of the cell envelope or membranes, to name a few. Many regulatory elements are conserved in different bacteria; however there are endless variations on the theme and novel elements of gene regulation in bacteria inhabiting particular environments are constantly being discovered. Especially in (pathogenic) bacteria colonizing the human body a plethora of bacterial responses to innate stresses such as pH, reactive nitrogen and oxygen species and antibiotic stress are being described. An attempt is made to not only cover model systems but give a broad overview of the stress-responsive regulatory systems in a variety of bacteria, including medically important bacteria, where elucidation of certain aspects of these systems could lead to treatment strategies of the pathogens. Many of the regulatory systems being uncovered are specific, but there is also considerable “cross-talk” between different circuits. Stress and Environmental Regulation of Gene Expression and Adaptation in Bacteria is a comprehensive two-volume work bringing together both review and original research articles on key topics in stress and environmental control of gene expression in bacteria.
