This paper takes a qualitative approach on a comparative study of collaborative relationship in the construction industry of Mongolia pre- vs. post- institutional transition in 1990. We find that in the pre-transition, collaborative relationship was authority based because of homogenous participant background, command entry barrier, formal decision law on conflict resolution, high sense of liability, rare price adjustment, whereas, in the post-transition, collaborative relationship is trust based or opportunism driven depending on whether long-term partnership and free market competition because of heterogeneous participant background, market entry barrier, economic interest on conflict resolution, divergence of interests causing agency problem, low sense of liability, and flexible price adjustment.

Joseph Hamburger John Stuart Mill on Liberty and Control

John Stuart Mill is one of the hallowed figures of the liberal tradition, revered for his defense of liberal principles and expansive personal liberty. By examining Mill's arguments in On Liberty in light of his other writings, however, Joseph Hamburger reveals a Mill very different from the "saint of rationalism" so central to liberal thought. He shows that Mill, far from being an advocate of a maximum degree of liberty, was an advocate of liberty and control--indeed a degree of control ultimately incompatible with liberal ideals. Hamburger offers this powerful challenge to conventional scholarship by presenting Mill's views on liberty in the context of his ideas about, in particular, religion and historical development. The book draws on the whole range of Mill's philosophical writings and on his correspondence with, among others, Harriet Taylor Mill, Auguste Comte, and Alexander Bain to show that Mill's underlying goal was to replace the traditional religious basis of society with a form of secular religion that would rest on moral authority, individual restraint, and social control. Hamburger argues that Mill was not self-contradictory in thus championing both control and liberty. Rather, liberty and control worked together in Mill's thought as part of a balanced, coherent program of social and moral reform that was neither liberal nor authoritarian. Based on a lifetime's study of nineteenth-century political thought, this clearly written a...

John Stuart Mill An Examination of Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy

One of the foremost figures of Western intellectual thought in the late 19th century, John Stuart Mill offered up examinations of human rights, personal and societal rights and responsibilities, and the striving for individual happiness that continue to impact our philosophies, both private and political, to this day.In this comprehensive rebuttal to the thinking of a preeminent philosopher of his time-one now, ironically, best remembered for Mill's critique-Mill explains why Hamilton's views on the limitations of human knowledge were, to Mil's thinking, wrong, and in the process, lays out his own ideas on the freedom of human will. In this provocative volume is where we find Mill's doctrine of the "permanent possibility of sensation," which encompasses the mind's interaction with the external world.First published in 1865, this is a replica of the 1889 third edition, and will be of interest to students of Mill's philosophy, and to the development of philosophical thought in the 19th century.English philosopher and politician JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) served as an administrator in the East Indian Company from 1823 to 1858, and as a member of parliament from 1865 to 1868. Among his essays on a wide range of political and social thought are Principles of Political Economy (1848), Considerations on Representative Government (1861), and The Subjection of Women (1869).

Palmer Mills were cotton spinning mills in Stockport, Cheshire. Originally built in around 1822 by James Marshall they were extended considerably over the following three decades. They ceased operating in the early 1880s, by which time they were old and obsolete. A new company purchased the mills and largely demolished them before building a new mill, which was completed in 1887. A second mill was completed in 1890. With the decline in the cotton industry, the mills closed in 1931. The No.1 Mill was demolished in 1937 but the No.2 Mill continued in various uses until it was demolished in 1999. This well illustrated book is a history and technical description of the mills in the context of the Lancashire cotton industry.

Dewan Mohammad Processing of Jute Fiber Reinforced Green Composites

Synthetic fibers are generally used to make composite materials for their better mechanical and thermal properties. However, they are expensive and non-biodegradable. Alternatively, natural fibers are inexpensive, biodegradable, easily available in nature and have good mechanical, and thermal. Among all natural fibers, jute fibers are easily available in fabric and fiber forms with good mechanical and thermal properties. Therefore, jute-based composite materials can be used in consumer goods, low-cost housing, cars, and civil structures. Jute fibers are chemically treated to improve fiber/matrix interface adhesion and moisture induced degradation. Biodegradable composites are manufactured using jute fabrics, biodegradable polymer and with/without nanoclay using the compression molding process. The effects of surface treatment and nanoclay on the jute based composites were characterized by thermal, mechanical, and physical analyses. Surface treated jute fiber reinforced composites showed better performances compared to untreated fiber reinforced composites. Nanoclay infused composites showed better thermal, mechanical, and physical properties compared to conventional composites.

В. И. Коган, В. М. Галицкий Problems in Quantum Mechanics

The present book contains one hundred and sixty problems, most of them simple, in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Some of these problems were used previously by the authors in their courses at the Moscow Institute of Engineering and Physics. However, the majority were drawn up or selected in the course of work on the book. This book is designed for physics students who are studying quantum mechanics approximately at the level of D.I.Blokhintsev's book or Part II of "Theoretical Physics" by A.S.Kompaneyts. A number of problems is intended primarily for students who are beginning to specialize in theoretical physics and who are partially familiar with the contents of "Quantum Mechanics" by L.D.Landau and Ye.M.Lifshits. Some problems illustrate individual theoretical questions which have scarcely been considered in textbooks: sudden and adiabatic changes; Heisenberg representation of operators; probability relations in addition of momenta; isotopic spin; parity; and others. The authors have tried to use relatively elementary mathematical tools of quantum mechanics to facilitate use of the book by nontheoretical physicists. With a few exceptions, the authors have not included in this book problems which are considered in sufficient detail in the basic textbooks mentioned above and in the problem book on quantum mechanics written by V.G.Levich. Therefore, this book should be regarded chiefly as an auxiliary textbook in the study of the above books.

John Stuart Mill On Liberty (Wisehouse Classics - The Authoritative Harvard Edition 1909)

ON LIBERTY is a philosophical work by English philosopher John Stuart Mill, originally intended as a short essay. The work, published in 1859, applies Mill's ethical system of utilitarianism to society and the state. Mill attempts to establish standards for the relationship between authority and liberty. He emphasizes the importance of individuality which he conceived as a prerequisite to the higher pleasures-the summum bonum of Utilitarianism. Furthermore, Mill criticised the errors of past attempts to defend individuality where, for example, democratic ideals resulted in the "tyranny of the majority". Among the standards established in this work are Mill's three basic liberties of individuals, his three legitimate objections to government intervention, and his two maxims regarding the relationship of the individual to society "which together form the entire doctrine of (Mill's) Essay."ON LIBERTY was a greatly influential and well received work, although it did not go without criticism. Some attacked it for its apparent discontinuity with Utilitarianism, while others criticised its vagueness. The ideas presented in ON LIBERTY have remained the basis of much liberal political thought. It has remained in print continuously since its initial publication.Mill's marriage to his wife Harriet Taylor Mill greatly influenced the concepts in ON LIBERTY, which was largely finished prior to her death, and published shortly after she died. Natnael Terefe Mental Illness among Prisoners

This book mainly focuses on issues of diagnosis, identification of factors associated with mental illness, and approaches to promote mental health in incarcerated people. Due to many factors in prisons that have negative effects on mental health, including: overcrowding, various forms of violence, lack of privacy, lack of meaningful activity, isolation from social networks, and insecurity about future prospects, mental health problems are expected to be more prevalent in prison population than those found in comparable community samples. The empirical research findings reported in this book can contribute some valuable data to the scarcely available study findings on the magnitude of mental disorders in prisons thereby creating awareness concerning the extent to which mental health problems are threatening in prisons. Prevalence data on specific mental disorders have practical importance for two important purposes: First they are required for scientific understanding of a disorder which will enable us to describe association, etiology, natural history and identification of new syndromes. Secondly they are also of vital importance for planning and evaluation of mental health.

Cutting-edge solutions to current problems in orthopedics, supported by modeling and numerical analysis Despite the current successful methods and achievements of good joint implantations, it is essential to further optimize the shape of implants so they may better resist extreme long-term mechanical demands. This book provides the orthopedic, biomechanical, and mathematical basis for the simulation of surgical techniques in orthopedics. It focuses on the numerical modeling of total human joint replacements and simulation of their functions, along with the rigorous biomechanics of human joints and other skeletal parts. The book includes: An introduction to the anatomy and biomechanics of the human skeleton, biomaterials, and problems of alloarthroplasty The definition of selected simulated orthopedic problems Constructions of mathematical model problems of the biomechanics of the human skeleton and its parts Replacement parts of the human skeleton and corresponding mathematical model problems Detailed mathematical analyses of mathematical models based on functional analysis and finite element methods Biomechanical analyses of particular parts of the human skeleton, joints, and corresponding replacements A discussion of the problems of data processing from nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and computer tomography This timely book offers a wealth of information on the current research in this field. The theories presented are applied to specific problems of orthopedics. Numerical results are presented and discussed from both biomechanical and orthopedic points of view and treatment methods are also briefly addressed. Emphasis is placed on the variational approach to the investigated model problems while preserving the orthopedic nature of the investigated problems. The book also presents a study of algorithmic procedures based on these simulation models. This is a highly useful tool for designers, researchers, and manufacturers of joint implants who require the results of suggested experiments to improve existing shapes or to design new shapes. It also benefits graduate students in orthopedics, biomechanics, and applied mathematics.
