Stochastic programs form a class of optimization problems that have seen much attention in the last decade. As has the class of equilibrium problems which have resulted largely from the analytic treatment of Nash games. This thesis delves into some challenging areas of stochastic optimization and stochastic equilibrium programming. Our interest is in understanding properties of these problems and in developing algorithms for solving such problems. We first consider a two-period stochastic nonlinear program. In this context, we obtain new insights into the notions of feasibility and recourse for such programs and develop an algorithm based on sequential quadratic programming. The algorithm uses two quadratic programming solvers based on Benders decomposition: an inexact cut version of the L-shaped method and a trust-region method. We next consider stochastic equilibrium problems arising from Nash-Cournot competition, inspired by a Cournot bidding model for electricity markets. We first show existence and uniqueness of Nash equilibria to a wide class of stochastic quadratic games and then develop a splitting method that can be decomposed scenario-wise to compute such equilibria.

The objective of the study was to assess the impact of river pollution on the lives of the inhabitants of the "Hechu" Peasant Association. The study revealed that the river pollution has affected the inhabitant's health seriously. Water related human health problems such as typhoid, dysentery and amoeba are commonly reported among the inhabitants. As a result, the major problems experienced by the inhabitants were increased medical expenses, low agricultural production, problems on children's education and financial loss due to labor hire. In addition, the dwellers face the death of animals due to toxic pollutants, decline in production and decrease of animal body weight. The study revealed that the respondents that were economically poor tend to be strongly affected by the river pollution when compared with the well-off and middle-class respondents. In this thesis, we present a new class of P-stable HLMMs with order p = 2 and p = 4 respectively for the numerical solution of second order systems. The hybrid schemes which are obtained via Pade 0 approximation approach have minimum Phase-lag error. Numerical experiments are carried out to show the accuracy of the proposed schemes. Nevertheless, the desire in this work is on high order P-stable schemes (p > 4). We give a proposition with proof, stating the limitation of the approach in search for higher order P-stable formulas. In the present work, we present extensive new data on thallium employing multi-photon and multi-step excitation techniques in conjunction with a thermionic diode ion detector. A number of different excitation paths have been used. The first experiment addresses the observation of odd- parity levels np 2P1/2,3/2 and np 2F5/2 using two- photon excitation from the ground state. In the second set of experiments we employed a two-step excitation scheme using 6s2 7s 2S1/2 intermediate level and observed the np 2P1/2,3/2 levels upto n = 56. The even-parity levels have also been excited using three-photon excitation from the ground state revealing ns 2S1/2 and np 2P3/2,5/2 levels. In the subsequent experiments, we used a two-color three- photon excitation technique to approach the ns 2S1/2 and nd 2D3/2 levels using 7p 2P1/2 as an intermediate level. The nd series have been extended upto n = 65 and it is noticed that the intensity of the high Rydberg series scales as 1/n2.8. However, the np 2P1/2,3/2 series, which have been observed upto n = 56 scale as 1/n2.3 in contrast to the scaling law of 1/n3 for an unperturbed Rydberg series.

This book provides a concise description of the pronominal empty categories of Gamo, an Omotic language spoken in Ethiopia. The principles of the GB Theory are relied on to identify the distribution and interpretation of pronominal empty categories in the language. Gamo is found to be a pro-drop language as subject NPs can be covert in a tensed clause. The covert NP subjects, pro, can be recovered from subject NP agreement elements attached on verbs. Its object NPs are not allowed to be covert. The absence of object NP AGR elements is the cause for this. Moreover, nominal features are absent in Gamo subordinate clauses, which in turn restrict the presence of pro in a complement clause except the relative and participial clauses. It is also discussed that pro can semantically interpreted as definitely or arbitrary based on the presence or absence of AGR elements. As the discussion of the analysis reveals Gamo pro fills in a theta or a non-theta position. PRO occurs in the subject position of infinite clauses. Its content is recovered when an antecedent NP or an implicit argument that is believed to have the status of pro is considered.

In this thesis we consider the problem of capital allocation, based on tail conditional expectation (TCE), for the class of the dependent multivariate family of distributions that essentially generalizes the classical multivariate Pareto distribution. This class can be obtained from independent exponential distributions, by a mixture of their common scale parameter. This translation of "Marxism and Problems of Linguistics" is a reprint of the English-language text published in Moscow in 1954. This edition also includes notes from the 1971 Chinese edition. The derivation of structural information from spectroscopic data is now an integral part of organic chemistry courses at all Universities.
