Globally, India ranks second in production under castor after Brazil. The annual production of 10.03 lakh tonnes from an area of 7.52 lakh ha and productivity of 1334 kg ha-1 in India (Anonymous, 2010a). The major castor production states in India are Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Orissa. It is also grown in Tamilnadu, Bihar, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Gujarat ranks first in India with respect to area, production and productivity, which as 4.22 lakh hectares, 4.31 lakh tonnes and 1972 kg ha-1 respectively (Anonymous, 2010b). Scattered cultivation of castor is found in almost all districts of Gujarat. Castor is an important non-edible oilseed crop with good export potential. It is used in the manufacture of high grade lubricant, soap, paints, varnishes, resins, plastic nylon, textile dying, refined oil, perfumed hair oil; Castor oil has also medicinal value being used as purgative. Recently, it is used as resins for surface coating, synthetic rubber and synthetic fibers. It is also used as bactericides and fungicides. Castor cake provides excellent organic manure with 4.5% N, 2.6% P, 1.0% K (Balasubramaniyan and Palaniappa 2000).

In recent years, largely in response to uncertain fuel supply and efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, bioethanol has become one of the most promising biofuels today. It is considered as the only feasible short to medium alternative to fossil transport fuels worldwide. The market potential for bio ethanol is therefore not just limited to transport fuel or energy production but has potential to supply the existing chemicals industry e.g. pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, beverages and medical sectors. The production of bio ethanol from traditional means, or 1st Generation Biofuels is based upon from sugar crops like sugar cane or sugar beet and starch crops like corn, wheat and rice as presented in the present study. Advances in development of ligno-cellulosic technology have led to the production of 2nd Generation Bio fuels from woody biomass or waste residues from forestry. The best plant growth of onion resulted from poultry manure with bio-fertilizer. The bio-fertilizer resulted an increase in the parameters of onion plant as compared to without bio-fertilizer treatment. The poorest plant growth observed from farmer practices without bio-fertilizer treatment. It was found that combined application of organic manure and chemical fertilizer along with bio-fertilizer improved soil fertility, soil physical and chemical properties and increased crop yields that resulted in sustained and successful crop production. Therefore, it is suggested to make a fertilizer/ manure management strategy which ensures sufficient nutrient supply for high and stable productivity of onion.

Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, , language: English, abstract: The conventional approach of biodiesel production is transesterification, using oil and alcohol in the presence of a catalyst with glycerol as a by-product of the reaction. Product quality is dependent on the type and amount of catalyst, type of oil feedstock, alcohol-to-oil ratio, etc. In terms of the best process, currently the alkali catalyzed process is the most profitable while the enzymatic based one is even more promising due to the lower consumption of energy and water; however it requires that the enzyme cost is reduced. The reason that biodiesel is not utilized widely around the world is due to the high cost of raw materials. To overcome this, one can use lower quality oils, such as Waste Cooking Oil (WCO). A lot of research has been carried out on the production of biodiesel from fresh vegetable and animal oil sources but the use of Waste Cooking Oil, such as palm oil, etc. has not been well documented. Then the aim of this current project is to analyze and optimize the conditions for biodiesel production from Waste Cooking Oil, by investigating interaction effects among process variables (temperature, oil-to-methanol molar ratio and catalyst loading) using SPC and other tools. Water production has been introduced as a severe and complicated issue in oil industry over the last two decades, and its' control has always been one of the most critical challenges in the oil fields. During the production life of oil wells, water is produced from the producer well due to the encroachment of water from aquifer or injected water in the reservoir, and sometimes the volume of water produced is much higher than the volume of oil produced. However, water can play an important role in maintaining reservoir pressure; it needs to be shut off when its' percentage reaches uneconomical limits. Excessive water production in oil fields results in a restriction of oil production and creates several production problems, including high lifting cost, producing corrosion and scale in production facilities and even sand production. In addition, high costs are incurred to separate, treat and dispose of the produced water. The economic development of a nation is directly dependent on the per capita energy consumption. The increased industrialization and motorization has led to a steep rise for the demand of petroleum products. Petroleum based fuels are obtained from limited reserves. It is estimated that the known crude oil reserves could be depleted in less than 50 years at the present rate of consumption. Hence, it is necessary to look for alternative fuels. An entire branch of biotechnology, referred to as "white biotechnology", centers on the bio production of fuels and chemicals from renewable sources. About 90% of the current biofuel market is represented by biodiesel and bioethanol. Biodiesel is an efficient, nontoxic, biodegradable and clean burning fuel alternative to petroleum fuels which runs in unmodified diesel engines. This paper reviews approaches to microbial synthesis of biodiesel, focusing on the role of synthetic biology as an enabling technology in the design of optimal cell factories.

In life of field, reservoir pressure is dropping by the development of production. The mechanisms to control pressure and production can be classified as primary, secondary and tertiary production mechanisms. Primary and Secondary Recovery techniques together are able to recover only about 35-50% of oil from the reservoir. This leaves a significant amount of oil remaining in the reservoir. Remaining oil in the reservoir can be divided into two classes, firstly residual oil to the water flood and secondly oil bypassed by the water flood. Residual oil mainly contains capillary trapped oil. One way of recovering this capillary trapped oil is by flooding the reservoir with chemicals (surfactant, alkali-surfactant (AS), surfactant-polymer (SP), or alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP). Surfactant is considered for enhanced oil recovery by reduction of oil–water interfacial tension (IFT). The crucial role of alkali is to reduce adsorption of surfactant during displacement process and alkali is beneficial for reduction of oil-water IFT by in situ generation of soap, which is an anionic surfactant. Polymer flooding improves mobility ratio and makes better sweep efficiency.

The importance of renewable fuel production has become significant in terms of supplying energy carriers for the transportation sector and storing electricity overflows from intermittent sources. The purpose of this book is to address, model and assess economics of methanol production schemes from a biogas origin. It is envisioned that the establishment of this biomass-to-liquid process will enhance biogas production. The enhancement is based on creating an alternative utilization method of biogas than combustion for CHP. The benefits from the establishment are projected to be a reduction in GHG-emissions from livestock waste and a biofuel contributor to renewable liquid energy carriers. A farm and a central large scale scenario are investigated. The production scheme assessed is based on biogas from degassed bio-waste and a biogas reforming technology. A Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell is adapted to the process schemes, partly to improve composition of reactants for methanol synthesis and to act as a peak shaving mechanism for the electricity overflows. A heat integration and economic assessment is established and subjected to a cost-optimization estimating methanol production prices.

Legume seeds have made a significant contribution to the human diet since ancient times. They are a good and inexpensive source of dietary proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Sprouts are one of the most complete and nutritional of all foods tested. Sprouts are real 'Life vitamins, minerals, proteins, and enzymes. Their nutritional value was discovered by the ancient Egyptians and Chinese thousands of years ago. The effect of sprouting media, seedling density and growth duration on character and yield of faba bean, pea and cowpea as well as storage and microbial load of faba bean and pea sprouts were studied. In faba bean sprout production, using rice straw, 50 % seeding density and 7 days duration were ideal for production. In pea sprout production, using kitchen paper, 75 % seeding density and 9 days duration were ideal for production. The interaction among package type, storage and shelf life period on off flavor of pea sprouts showed that the most suitable conditions for lowest sprout off flavor was storing pea sprout at 0 O C for 4 days in black punnets covered with stretch or at 0 O C for 2 days plus 2 days at 10 O C in strawberry.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Agrarian Studies, University of Ghent, language: English, abstract: In the transition from a fossil to a bio-based economy, it has become an important challenge to maximally recycle valuable nutrients that currently end up in waste streams. Nutrient resources are rapidly depleting. Significant amounts of fossil energy are required for the production of synthetic fertilizers, whereas costs for energy and fertilizers are increasing.The goal of this thesis was to evaluate the impact of bio-amendments instead of synthetic fertilizers. It aims to i) identify the impact of the different scenarios on the soil fertility ii) the influence of bio-amendment substitutes on the soil quality and iii) the impact of the applied amendment on the plant nutrient contents. Eleven scenarios were designed from liquid manure, digestates and scrubber water.Their application resulted in no nitrate pollution according to the Flemish Manure decree in the top 90 cm of the soil. Also there was no negative impact on the soil quality and soil fertility though soil degradation needs to be monitored in the long term. Moreover, the nutrient status of the experimental field was already quite high to begin with. However, the lack of a reference treatment precluded the real evaluation of the potential of the bio-amendments on soil quality and crop yields.
