Speech sound disorder (SSD) and reading disability (RD) are both associated with impaired phoneme awareness (PA). This study explores how four measures of speech perception, tapping both segmental and suprasegmental processing, are related to phoneme awareness within 10- and 11-year old children labeled as SSD-only (n = 17), RD-only (n = 16), SSD+RD (n = 17), and age-matched Control (n = 16). In accordance with a multi-factorial theory of the relationship between speech perception and phoneme awareness, children in all three clinical groups were impaired on multiple measures of speech perception. In addition, the SSD-only group currently did not reveal any PA deficit. Analyses exploring the SSD-only group revealed that these children have had strong vocabulary and processing speed since age 5, possibly assisting in the development of normal reading and eventual normal PA. In sum, results suggest that impairments in speech perception, both segmental and suprasegmental, may initially impact phonological re­presentations but that with strong protective factors reading may develop normally, allowing PA difficulties to be overcome.

The present study made an attempt to find out the effect of spectral variations on perception of speech in young normal hearing adults. The study showed that the spectral information between 1500 Hz and 2100 Hz are important for perception of speech in Telugu & was no difference found in lower cut off is important in perception of speech in Telugu compared to English language.The speech identification scores improved with increase in low-pass cut off frequencies and with decrease in high-pass cut off frequencies. The participants obtained speech identification scores of 70% at low-pass cut off frequency of 1500 Hz and at high-pass cut off of 2100 Hz.

This book presents the first ever rule-based part of speech tagging for Pashto language. In natural language processing, part-of-speech tagging plays a vital role. It is a significant pre-requisite for putting a human language on the engineering track. Before developing a part-of-speech tagger, a tagset is required for that language. Initially, a tagset is created according to syntactical properties that contains 54 tags for Pashto language. A simple architecture is proposed for Pashto part of speech tagger. The architecture contains a tokenizer, a lexicon and rules for disambiguation and new words. The lexicon contains words with their tags. The lexicon will grow with each new word, when more and more text is tagged. The above architecture is implemented and tested on real world data. The accuracy was low in the beginning because a very limited lexicon and rules were present. Text is tagged with this tagger and corrections of new words are done manually which result in the growth of both lexicon and rules. When the lexicon reached to 100,000 words and rules grew to 120, the accuracy became 88%. The accuracy will further increase with the increase of words in the lexicon and rules.
