This study aims is to discover the best methods for geometry students to master proof writing. Students who are taught how to write proofs in a traditional setting find proofs to be very difficult. Studies have been conducted regarding the use of dynamic geometry software in proof writing. To further study the effects of proof writing using dynamic geometry software, freshmen students enrolled in an honors geometry course at a high performing suburban high school in Louisiana were given several proofs to complete, along with self-reflection surveys. During phase one of this research, twenty-four students were allowed to use Geometer's Sketchpad while writing their proofs, while the other twenty-four students were using only paper and pencil to explore the figure involved in the proof. During phase two of testing, the control and experimental groups swapped places to uphold the equality standards of the course. Student self-reflection surveys show that some students enjoy writing proofs when using GSP, while others are indifferent. Along with the student surveys, the present study is an analysis of student work from those who had access to GSP to improve proof writing skills.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 1,3, University of Hohenheim (Lehrstuhl für Bankwirtschaft und Finanzdienstleistungen), language: English, abstract: The question about capital structure is one of the most important issues which the management of a company faces in implementing their daily business. Therefore, the question of which factors affect capital structure decisions attracts high attention in the past and recent literature on capital structure. There are many papers providing valuable insights into capital structure choices, starting with the paper of Modigliani and Miller (1958). The MM-Theorem is generally considered a purely theoretical result since it ignores important factors in the capital structure decision like bank-ruptcy costs, taxes, agency costs and information asymmetry. Based on this paper many other theories which consider factors neglected by Modigliani and Miller have been evolved. Two major theories are the Tradeoff- and the Pecking-Order-Theory. The former loosens assumptions stated in the MM-Theorem by including bankruptcy costs and taxes while the latter introduces information asymmetry into the capital structure discussion. Chapter 2.1 will give a brief overview of these theories. For complexity reasons these models cannot capture all relevant factors affecting the capital structure policy of a company. However, all these theories disregard one cru-cial fa...

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar), course: HS First Language Acquisition, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Most of the concepts and theories explaining how native languages are acquired go back to three different approaches put forward by Burrhus Federic Skinner, Noam Chomsky and Jean Piaget, either by using their ideas as a starting point or by rejecting them and formulating a new or altered Hypothesis. This paper will try to present those three basic theories, also taking into account the contexts out of which they emerged, as to fully understand linguistic, like any other scientific, views and theories, they have always to be evaluated with respect to the scientific and cultural background they appeared in.First it will try to show how Skinners concept of 'verbal behavior' with respect to language acquisition emerged in the development of behaviouristic theories. This will be followed by Chomsky's criticism of Skinner's ideas, leading to his own theory of language and language acquisition, which will be presented. Jean Piaget offers a cognitive approach to the question. His view will be described before comparing nativist and cognitivist ideas, concerning the points whether or not innate structures exist and in how far linguistic and cognitive development are interrelated, taking the opposed views of Piaget ...

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: International Organisations, grade: 4, Mount Kenya University (Department of Social Sciences), course: Master of Arts in International Relations & Diplomacy, language: English, abstract: International relations is a branch of political science that studies the relations between nations and their foreign policies. Like all scientific studies, international relations can be best understood by the aid of theories. The theorization of international relations emerged during the interwar period with liberalists calling for a collective security system to replace the balance of power policy which was being fronted by the realists. Since the turn of the 20th century when interstate relations intensified, it has always been hard to talk about international relations without making a reference to the three grand theories; realism, Marxism, and liberalism. This paper will therefore present and evaluate these three main theories. These theories have extensively been used by different scholars to explain and predict interstate behaviours in the international system. International relations theories are also described as a set of ideas that explain the nature of the international system while predicting the outcomes from actions by major players in international relations. These theories reflect what transpires in international relations and this implies that their concepts reflect what happens on...

The book is the first part of the monograph “Classification of countable models of complete theories” consisting of two parts. In the monograph, a classification of countable models of complete theories with respect to two basic characteristics (Rudin–Keisler preorders and distribution functions for numbers of limit models) is presented and applied to the most important classes of countable theories such as the class of Ehrenfeucht theories (i. e., complete first-order theories with finitely many but more than one pairwise non-isomorphic countable models), the class of small theories (i. e., complete first-order theories with countably many types), and the class of countable first-order theories with continuum many types. For realizations of basic characteristics of countable complete theories, syntactic generic constructions, generalizing the Jonsson–Fraïssé construction and the Hrushovski construction, are presented. Using these constructions a solution of the Goncharov–Millar problem (on the existence of Ehrenfeucht theories with countable models which are not almost homogeneous) is described. Modifying the Hrushovski–Herwig generic construction, a solution of the Lachlan problem on the existence of stable Ehrenfeucht theories is shown. In the first part, a characterization of Ehrenfeuchtness, properties of Ehrenfeucht theories, generic constructions, and algebras for distributions of binary semi-isolating formulas of a complete theory are considered. The book is intended for specialists interested in Mathematical Logic.

This book in categorial proof theory formulates in terms of category theory a generalization close to linear algebra of the notions of distributive lattice and Boolean algebra. These notions of distributive lattice category and Boolean category codify a plausible nontrivial notion of identity of proofs in classical propositional logic, which is in accordance with Gentzen's cut-elimination procedure for multiple-conclusion sequents modified by admitting new principles called union of proofs and zero proofs. It is proved that these notions of category are coherent in the sense that there is a faithful structure-preserving functor from freely generated distributive lattice categories and Boolean categories into the category whose arrows are relations between finite ordinals-a category related to generality of proofs and to the notion of natural transformation. These coherence results yield a simple decision procedure for equality of proofs. Coherence in the same sense is also proved for various more general notions of category that enter into the notions of distributive lattice category and Boolean category. Some of these coherence results, like those for monoidal and symmetric monoidal categories are well known, but are here presented in a new light. The key to this categorification of the proof theory of classical propositional logic is distribution of conjunction over disjunction that is not an isomorphism as in cartesian closed categories.

Master's Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, grade: 2,0 (B), University of Heidelberg (Institute for Politcal Science), course: International Cooperation and Organisations, 24 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: IntroductionThe emergence of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1947 marked a substantial turning point in the American trade policy from protectionism to free trade. High tariff barriers and the absence of free trade were seen as one of the main reasons for the Great Depression in the 1920s. To prevent such international economic crisis in the future the United States of America pushed forward negotiations about international economic cooperation that led to the GATT. Until today the imitation of the GATT, the WTO, is - together with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank - the most important international economic cooperation.Cooperation between states only comes into being if certain requirements are fulfilled. The different theories of international relations aim to explain under which circumstances such international cooperation emerges. Thereby each of these theories is based on different assumptions, i.e. about state behavior or the shape of the international system. The central research question of this paper is how good these assumptions of different theories fit the reality. The objective is therefore to test if and how theories of internatio...

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1.3, University of Applied Sciences Mainz (School of Business), course: International Business Environment, language: English, abstract: This paper gives an overview of international trade theories. It demonstrates that the fundamentals of classical and neoclassical theories are still relevant today, albeit they have been adjusted and developed. Modern theorists explain international trade with more realistic approaches, such as Krugman et al.'s New Trade Theory or Porter's theory of National Competitive Advantage. The New Trade Theory includes the existence of increasing return of scale to describe and analyze world trade more accurately. Porter's theory of National Competitive Advantage explains international trade as a consequence of productivity differences between nations due to diverse environments and cultures within economies. Dunning and Porter take a globalized world economy into account in order to describe today's trade. The classical theories of Ricardo and Heckscher-Ohlin are limited in describing today's inter-national trade. However, they are still important factors which contribute to the explanation of real-world trade relations. Ricardo's theory describes inter-industry trade which in fact exists between Northern and Southern economies. The relevance of the approach as an explanation of global trade has to be limited due to the fact th...

A mathematical introduction to the theory and applications of logic and set theory with an emphasis on writing proofs Highlighting the applications and notations of basic mathematical concepts within the framework of logic and set theory, A First Course in Mathematical Logic and Set Theory introduces how logic is used to prepare and structure proofs and solve more complex problems. The book begins with propositional logic, including two-column proofs and truth table applications, followed by first-order logic, which provides the structure for writing mathematical proofs. Set theory is then introduced and serves as the basis for defining relations, functions, numbers, mathematical induction, ordinals, and cardinals. The book concludes with a primer on basic model theory with applications to abstract algebra. A First Course in Mathematical Logic and Set Theory also includes: Section exercises designed to show the interactions between topics and reinforce the presented ideas and concepts Numerous examples that illustrate theorems and employ basic concepts such as Euclid’s lemma, the Fibonacci sequence, and unique factorization Coverage of important theorems including the well-ordering theorem, completeness theorem, compactness theorem, as well as the theorems of Löwenheim–Skolem, Burali-Forti, Hartogs, Cantor–Schröder–Bernstein, and König An excellent textbook for students studying the foundations of mathematics and mathematical proofs, A First Course in Mathematical Logic and Set Theory is also appropriate for readers preparing for careers in mathematics education or computer science. In addition, the book is ideal for introductory courses on mathematical logic and/or set theory and appropriate for upper-undergraduate transition courses with rigorous mathematical reasoning involving algebra, number theory, or analysis.

One of the main problems of quantitative study of proofs is speed-up phenomenon, that is a situation, where two systems are compared such that some theorems have much shorter proof in one of them. For the first time such problem on the proof steps was considered for arithmetical systems by Gödel. Now many results in this field are well-known. In all of them by comparison of two systems for every recursive function φ can be pointed one formula or infinite set of formula, which has φ speed-up. We introduce the common notion of proof complexity (by analogy to Blum computational complexity), the notion of ordinary theory and formulate some conditions for any pair of theory, which are enough for possibility of the most generalized (Rabin style) speed-up, i.e. for arbitrary general recursive function φ there exists n0 such that for every n>n0 there is provable in both theories formula βφn such that its proof complexity in "stronger" theory is no more than n and in the "weaker" theory is greater than φ(n). Many pair systems with above conditions are considered as well as the constructive description of "hard" provable formulas for some pair systems is given.

This is an introduction to stochastic integration and stochastic differential equations written in an understandable way for a wide audience, from students of mathematics to practitioners in biology, chemistry, physics, and finances. The presentation is based on the naïve stochastic integration, rather than on abstract theories of measure and stochastic processes. The proofs are rather simple for practitioners and, at the same time, rather rigorous for mathematicians. Detailed application examples in natural sciences and finance are presented. Much attention is paid to simulation diffusion processes. The topics covered include Brownian motion; motivation of stochastic models with Brownian motion; Itô and Stratonovich stochastic integrals, Itô’s formula; stochastic differential equations (SDEs); solutions of SDEs as Markov processes; application examples in physical sciences and finance; simulation of solutions of SDEs (strong and weak approximations). Exercises with hints and/or solutions are also provided.

As there exists a variety of different theories, I chose just three of them for this paper. I will introduce their concepts, compare their differencesand try to give a final evaluation of the three concepts.Blum-Kulka/Olshtain1I will begin with the model of Shoshana Blum-Kulka and Elite Olshtain. They first of all classify apology as a speech act, name preconditions that are inevitable for an apology to take place and then list different strategy types.Apologie als a speech act: classificationThe apology belongs to the post-event-acts, i.e. it signals that a certain type of event has already taken place. Moreover, the speaker recognizes the fact that a violation of a social norm has been committed and that the speaker is at least partially involved in its cause. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, , language: English, abstract: This paper presents the role of viral marketing in building brand equity. There are many well known theories that are generally accepted regarding brand equity. Although these theories are quite old, they are still used in academic research. According to Keller (1993:39): "Brand equity is defined in terms of the marketing effects uniquely attributable to the brand". Aaker elaborated the brand equity dimensions, however, his theories do not explain what the direct causes of brand equity are. The present study is based on the existing theories on brand equity and viral marketing and provides new insights developed for the football players. There are limited research and theories on this case. The focus of the study will be on brand equity which is developed when the consumer knows the brand. The other dimensions of brand equity such as brand loyalty and perceived quality are created when the consumers know the brand. The present thesis, in particular, does not focus on the effects of brand equity but it is mostly concerned with brand awareness. This applies in case of football players and consequently, it results in a deeper comprehension on how important brand awareness is for the development of brand equity. The present thesis focuses on a relatively new topic which is word-of-mouth through the Int...

An engaging and accessible introduction to mathematical proof incorporating ideas from real analysis A mathematical proof is an inferential argument for a mathematical statement. Since the time of the ancient Greek mathematicians, the proof has been a cornerstone of the science of mathematics. The goal of this book is to help students learn to follow and understand the function and structure of mathematical proof and to produce proofs of their own. An Introduction to Proof through Real Analysis is based on course material developed and refined over thirty years by Professor Daniel J. Madden and was designed to function as a complete text for both first proofs and first analysis courses. Written in an engaging and accessible narrative style, this book systematically covers the basic techniques of proof writing, beginning with real numbers and progressing to logic, set theory, topology, and continuity. The book proceeds from natural numbers to rational numbers in a familiar way, and justifies the need for a rigorous definition of real numbers. The mathematical climax of the story it tells is the Intermediate Value Theorem, which justifies the notion that the real numbers are sufficient for solving all geometric problems. • Concentrates solely on designing proofs by placing instruction on proof writing on top of discussions of specific mathematical subjects • Departs from traditional guides to proofs by incorporating elements of both real analysis and algebraic representation • Written in an engaging narrative style to tell the story of proof and its meaning, function, and construction • Uses a particular mathematical idea as the focus of each type of proof presented • Developed from material that has been class-tested and fine-tuned over thirty years in university introductory courses An Introduction to Proof through Real Analysis is the ideal introductory text to proofs for second and third-year undergraduate mathematics students, especially those who have completed a calculus sequence, students learning real analysis for the first time, and those learning proofs for the first time. Daniel J. Madden, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at The University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA. He has taught a junior level course introducing students to the idea of a rigorous proof based on real analysis almost every semester since 1990. Dr. Madden is the winner of the 2015 Southwest Section of the Mathematical Association of America Distinguished Teacher Award. Jason A. Aubrey, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Director, Mathematics Center of the University of Arizona.

This is a reprint of the orginal book released in 1968. Our primary goal in this book is to sharpen the skill, sophistication, and in- tuition of the reader in the interpretation of mental test data, and in the construction and use of mental tests both as instruments of psychological theory and as tools in the practical problems of selection, evaluation, and guidance. We seek to do this by exposing the reader to some psychologically meaningful statistical theories of mental test scores.Although this book is organized in terms of test-score theories and models, the practical applications and limitations of each model studied receive substantial emphasis, and these discussions are presented in as nontechnical a manner as we have found possible. Since this book catalogues a host of test theory models and formulas, it may serve as a reference handbook. Also, for a limited group of specialists, this book aims to provide a more rigorous foundation for further theoretical research than has heretofore been available. One aim of this book is to present statements of the assumptions, together with derivations of the implications, of a selected group of statistical models that the authors believe to be useful as guides in the practices of test construction and utilization. With few exceptions we have given a complete proof for each major result presented in the book. In many cases these proofs are simpler, more complete, and more illuminating than those originally offered. When we have o...
