Livestock rearing is one of the most important economic activities in the rural areas of India which provides supplementary income to most of the families dependent on agriculture. Apart from providing subsidiary income to the families, rearing of livestock such as cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, poultry etc. is a source of readily available high quality animal protein to the farmer's family. Livestock farms in rural and periurban farming systems vary widely in size and other characteristics like economic performance, type of herd maintained, feeding systems followed etc. This variation possess problem to identify target group based on which research and extension activities could be carried out. The need to identify the patterns in livestock farming thus is essential to understand the differences and target the research and extension activities in a more meaningful way. Many variables influence the patterns of livestock farming. Identifying the most important or crucial variables to structure the livestock farming in a homogeneous way is thus imperative. This study gives an account of the livestock production systems followed by rural and periurban farmers in South Gujarat, India

Livestock contribute to food, economy and sustainable agriculture. Livestock production systems differ widely in scale and intensity across the world and reflect differences in available resources (i.e. land, feed and water), socio-economics and tradition. We need to develop a good understanding of the differences among production systems if we are to be able to help poor livestock keepers take advantage of the rising demand for animal source foods, help livestock keepers adapt to a changing and more volatile climate; minimize the risk of disease emergence and spread, not only among livestock but also in people; and to help all livestock keepers mitigate greenhouse gas emissions via a wide range of options. Understanding how livestock fit into these systems, and how these systems may evolve in the future, is critical.

Intensification of livestock production systems have made the economic implications of diseases in livestock increasingly important. This is because, the diseases in livestock represent avoidable waste of the already scarce resources. Hence, procedures and tools for disease loss estimations are now infused into the studies concerning the field of animal health economics. However, documented evidences on the economics of important bovine diseases, more specifically metabolic diseases, which cause major financial setbacks to the farmers when their bovines just start returning them profits, are scanty. This book, "Metabolic Diseases in Bovines: An Economic Evaluation" deals with various aspects of epidemiology and estimation of disease losses, including the analyses of the factors predisposing to the economically important metabolic diseases such as milk fever and ketosis in bovines and estimation of economic losses associated with these diseases. Besides, the book also suggests various disease prevention strategies in the context of the losses estimated. These aspects make this book much useful to the epidemiologists, animal health economists, policy makers and animal researchers.

The study on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the livestock-producing communities of Uganda was carried out in Kashumba and Moyo sub counties. There was no clear data that supported the impact of HIV/AIDS on livestock producing communities on labour, decision-making, grazing and watering time and factors that aggravated its effects. Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussion, observation guides and review of secondary data. The study showed that there was reduction in the availability of labour for grazing and watering livestock in both Moyo and Kashumba; There was shift in decision-making and implementation from ailing household heads to selected household members. There was significant negative changes in livestock grazing and sale of livestock products in households affected by HIV/AIDS compared to those non affected. Furthermore, there was reduction in grazing and watering time for livestock activities. It was observed that daily animal source foods reduced in the affected households. The study recommended that HIV/AIDS mitigation measures be intergrated in the livestock sector plans that will create HIV/AIDS competent communities in Uganda.

Pastoralist in developing countries keep livestock with unique genetically determined traits. In marginal environments, local livestock breeds are crucial for sustaining rural livelihoods by producing a wide range of products while requiring relatively low levels of input with regard to fodder, management and health care. Cattle stand out across in terms of provision of non- market services, including draught power, manure, risk management, asset storage, community bonding, and ceremonial services, amongst others. Therefore the maintenance of the adapted cattle breeds is ecologically more sustainable and will ensure sustainable food and livelihood provision for communities. However, economic forces of globalization as well as political backing for crossbreeding with exotic breed, among other factors have already resulted in the extinction of a large number of breeds and many more are threatened.

W. Edwards Deming referred the 'understanding of systems' as being a key principle for quality thinking. In this instance, as it currently stands the organisation under examination is operating two major units: A business unit and an educational unit. This is reflected in the current method of organisational evaluation as shown throughout this research, with the use of two separate evaluation methods: the Baldrige Educational Performance Excellence Criteria and New Zealand Educational Authority's required Six Tertiary Evaluation Indicators. Through the development of a single evaluation tool the needs of the 'whole' organisation can be determined, which will aid in the deployment of resources and innovation to ensure the whole organisation benefits. Presently from the information obtained through the two separate evaluation methods, innovation and advancement made in one unit will have adverse effects on another.

The impetus for this volume lives in a rich and vibrant past. It is organized to honor one of thefounders and most prolific contributors to the professional and transdiscipline of evaluation --Professor Michael Scriven, and to illuminate the future of evaluation in society. Professor Scrivenoften shares stories of his meetings with Albert Einsten and the frame-breaking evaluation revolutionhe has led against the value free doctrine of the social sciences. Both his wide eyed graduatestudents and the more grizzled evaluation veterans in his professional development workshopsquickly learn that Scriven is well traveled and has exchanged some of the boldest ideas and visions with the most brilliant thinkers ofhis time. Scriven insisted that the 2011 Stauffer Symposium and this volume be organized in that genre. He urged us to invite the mostthoughtful and influential evaluation theorists and practitioners we could find to join him in a conversation about the future of evaluationin society.Scriven challenges us to examine the five great paradigm shifts that have revolutionized the foundations of evaluation, and that hebelieves will form the basis for a much brighter future for evaluation in society. Scriven's revolutionary ideas are followed and challengedby a group of thought leaders in evaluation who do not necessarily shared his views on evaluation, but who have earned hisdeepest respect and whose evaluation work he admires including Michael Quinn Patton, Ernest House, Danie...

To sustain the growth of livestock sector and the regional economy, adequate policy measures need to be established for appreciable growth in productivity and sustainability in the regional farm level and in the processing sectors. For the deduction of appropriate policy measures, the book presents current trends emerging from the production, consumption and future demand by means of scientific study and statistical predictions. Migration of people, tourism development, increase in population, urbanisation, increase in the income coupled with the adequate measures from the governments, the demand for livestock is on constant increase. To estimate the needs for future, the effect of price, income arising from livestock producers and other parameters that enhance the sustained supply of livestock products is presented. Using statistical methods, the demand and supply issues are predicted for the next two decades.

Empiricism provides the backbone of knowledge creation within social science disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology) and applied domains of study (e.g., education, administration) alike. Yet, relative to such domainsof inquiry, comparatively little empirical research on evaluation has occurred, and the research knowledge basebeen infrequently synthesized and integrated to influence theory and practice. The proposed book aims to fillthis void with regard to participatory evaluation, a set of collaborative approaches to evaluation that isreceiving considerable attention of late, including a growing body of empirical studies. The authors begin in Part 1 with the delineation of a widely known and familiar conceptual framework forparticipatory evaluation. They then use the framework in Part 2 as a guide to conducting an extensive review of the extant empirical knowledge base inparticipatory evaluation, culminating in a thematic analysis of what we know about the approach. In Part 3 the authors focus on methodologicalconsiderations of doing research on participatory evaluation through a critique of existing studies and an explication of design choices drawn fromtheir own research program. The book concludes in Part 4 with implications for moving the field forward in terms of important research questions, methodological direction and evaluation practice. This book will be of central interest to evaluation theorists and to those who choose to conduct research on evaluation; appeal will...

Despite this fact, it has largely been ignored in water management for food security. Livestock production interacts with the water resources directly or indirectly and the interaction can be positive or negative depending on the type of production. Evidences suggest that there is a huge knowledge gap and much misinformation about livestock's use of and impact on water resources. This book tries to answer the questions that what type of interaction exists in the Nile River Basin and how much is the productivity of the water for livestock production. This book should be useful for any level researchers and professionals in environment, livestock, agriculture and similar fields.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 2,0, University of Hamburg, language: English, abstract: The focus of this thesis is on the grocery retail market and more specifically on the store´s private labels. It is interesting to analyse this area because of the strong competition between products and the way customers assess quality to the different items in such a context. Research shows that private label brands suffer from a low quality image compared with national brands. The main reason for such a bad quality perception is not so much linked with the ingredients quality, but rather with the poor private label product image itself. Based on the situation outlined above, the objective of this master thesis is the development of an appropriate strategy in order to increase grocery private labels quality perception. This work studies four different issues: The customer´s evaluation of product quality, the identification and analysis of the causes of the low store labels quality image, the comparison between national and store brands, and the relevance of Price, Country of Origin, Package and Brand in product excellence evaluation. There is a long history of research that demonstrates that consumers frequently use extrinsic cues to infer product quality. Therefore, management's strategy to target the most price-elastic shoppers by discounting their store brands...

The incorporation of functional ingredients in a given food system and the processing and handling of such foods are associated with nutritional challenges for their healthy delivery. The extreme sensitivity of some components cause significant loss of product quality, stability, nutritional value and bioavailability, and the overall acceptability of the food product. Consequently, encapsulation has been successfully used to improve stability and bioavailability of functional ingredients. Encapsulation is one example of technology that has the potential to meet the challenge of successfully incorporating and delivering functional ingredients into a range of food types. The book will cover topics about 1) Characterization of novel polymers and their use in encapsulation processes. 2) Stability of nutraceutical compounds encapsulated with novel polymers. 3) Application of encapsulated compounds with novel polymers in functional food systems. This book provides a detailed overview of technologies for preparing and characterisation of encapsulates for food active ingredients using modified polymers. The use of modified polymers as coating materials it is a field that still needs study. The book is aimed to inform students and researchers in the areas of food science and food technology, and professionals in the food industry.

Evaluation has played a fundamental role throughout the history of higher education. It has been key to institutional missions and for accountability concerns for public funding policy and fiscal oversight. In the last 30 years, there has been focused attention on the quality of education and student learning. Campuses have stepped up their initiatives to evaluate educational outcomes—and communicate these to their constituencies—just as regional, state, and national efforts have emerged regarding assessment of learning outcomes. In this context, various methods and approaches to evaluative inquiry have emerged to support efforts to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of instructional practice and curriculum for higher learning. This edition examines perspectives on evaluation studies addressing higher education learning—from program- to institution-based studies and critiques of practice—to document successes and identify significant challenges that face evaluators and the collaborating educators in the continuing development of higher education. This examination represents both an investigation into the particular insights that evaluative inquiry contributes to the scholarship and practice of higher education and a reflection on the evaluation expertise that can be applied across contexts of professional practice and program development. This is the 151st issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass. It is an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.

Evaluation has always played a major role in information retrieval, with the early pioneers such as Cyril Cleverdon and Gerard Salton laying the foundations for most of the evaluation methodologies in use today. The retrieval community has been extremely fortunate to have such a well-grounded evaluation paradigm during a period when most of the human language technologies were just developing. This lecture has the goal of explaining where these evaluation methodologies came from and how they have continued to adapt to the vastly changed environment in the search engine world today. The lecture starts with a discussion of the early evaluation of information retrieval systems, starting with the Cranfield testing in the early 1960s, continuing with the Lancaster "user" study for MEDLARS, and presenting the various test collection investigations by the SMART project and by groups in Britain. The emphasis in this chapter is on the how and the why of the various methodologies developed. The second chapter covers the more recent "batch" evaluations, examining the methodologies used in the various open evaluation campaigns such as TREC, NTCIR (emphasis on Asian languages), CLEF (emphasis on European languages), INEX (emphasis on semi-structured data), etc. Here again the focus is on the how and why, and in particular on the evolving of the older evaluation methodologies to handle new information access techniques. This includes how the test collection techniques were m...

The continued advancement in the sciences of functional foods and nutraceuticals has clearly established a strong correlation between consumption of bioactives and improved human health and performance. However, the efficacy and bioavailability of these bioactive ingredients (e.g., omega-3 oils, carotenoid antioxidants, vitamins, and probiotic bacteria) in foods often remains a challenge, due to their instability in food products and gastrointestinal tract, as well as their limited bioavailability. In some cases, these bioactive ingredients may impart an undesirable organoleptic characteristic to the final product, which hinders acceptance by consumers. In addressing these challenges, development of effective delivery systems is critical to meet the consumer needs for effective bioactives. The scientific knowledge behind developing effective delivery of bioactive components into modern and wide-ranging food products will be essential to reap their health-promoting benefits and to support the sustained growth of the functional foods market. Nanotechnology and Functional Foods: Effective Delivery of Bioactive Ingredients explores the current data on all aspects of nanoscale packing, carrying and delivery mechanisms of bioactives ingredients to functional foods. The book presents various delivery systems (including nano-emulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles, and polymeric nano-particles), their properties and interactions with other food components, and fate in the human body. Later chapters emphasize the importance of consumers? attitude towards nano-delivery for the success of the technology and investigate the challenges faced by regulatory agencies to control risks and harmonize approaches worldwide. The wide applicability of bioactive delivery systems with the purpose of improving food quality, food safety and human health will make this book a worthy reference for a diverse range of readers in industry, research and academia.

Poultry enterprise has been providing quality protein sources in the form of meat & eggs since its domestication. However, due to rapidly growing human population, every passing year multiplies the need of animal protein for human consumption. To increase protein production by this sector, adequate supply of quality feed is part and parcel. On tropical & subtropical belt of the globe, shortage & irregular supply of protein feed ingredients are considered the main attributes of decreased meat & egg production. Their adverse effects can be diluted by enrichment of low protein quality stuff by microbial growth or single cell protein (SCP) production. Comparative production potential of SCP is often quoted as, a 0.5t bullock synthesizes less than 0.5Kg of protein in 24-hr, however, 0.5t of soybeans produces the equivalent of 40Kg protein in 24-hr while 0.5t of yeast generates 50t in this time. Production of SCP requires less space and is independent of climate and produces less pollution, a burning issue in animal agriculture. This document reflects optimizing conditions for SCP & its response by birds when used as feed.

Aircraft structural maintenance is one of the critical operational activities to guarantee continued airworthiness. A proper maintenance strategy developed in design phase can save significant operational cost. Currently, the MSG-3 document and deterministic methodologies are widely applied as guidance to make scheduled maintenance tasks but face challenges with composite structures and structural health monitoring (SHM) technologies. The research objective is to determine flexible and cost-effective maintenance tasks for aircraft structures while maintaining an acceptable safety level. Two key parameters in scheduled maintenance, i.e. the inspection interval and the repair/replace threshold are addressed. Composite airframes are particularly investigated and damage characteristics are obtained. Non-deterministic methodologies are proposed to optimize maintenance tasks considering uncertainty. The integration of SHM into scheduled maintenance and its influence on scheduled maintenance is further studied.

Insightful observations on common question evaluation methods and best practices for data collection in survey research Featuring contributions from leading researchers and academicians in the field of survey research, Question Evaluation Methods: Contributing to the Science of Data Quality sheds light on question response error and introduces an interdisciplinary, cross-method approach that is essential for advancing knowledge about data quality and ensuring the credibility of conclusions drawn from surveys and censuses. Offering a variety of expert analyses of question evaluation methods, the book provides recommendations and best practices for researchers working with data in the health and social sciences. Based on a workshop held at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), this book presents and compares various question evaluation methods that are used in modern-day data collection and analysis. Each section includes an introduction to a method by a leading authority in the field, followed by responses from other experts that outline related strengths, weaknesses, and underlying assumptions. Topics covered include: Behavior coding Cognitive interviewing Item response theory Latent class analysis Split-sample experiments Multitrait-multimethod experiments Field-based data methods A concluding discussion identifies common themes across the presented material and their relevance to the future of survey methods, data analysis, and the production of Federal statistics. Together, the methods presented in this book offer researchers various scientific approaches to evaluating survey quality to ensure that the responses to these questions result in reliable, high-quality data. Question Evaluation Methods is a valuable supplement for courses on questionnaire design, survey methods, and evaluation methods at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. it also serves as a reference for government statisticians, survey methodologists, and researchers and practitioners who carry out survey research in the areas of the social and health sciences.
