The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. Using this as a case study, the AGU monograph Groundwater Vulnerability: Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is devoted to the problem of groundwater vulnerability, where the results of long-term field and modeling investigations of radionuclide transport in soil and groundwater, within the Ukrainian part of the Dnieper River basin (Kyiv region of Ukraine), are discussed. The authors provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on the assessment of groundwater vulnerability and then describe an improved methodology, which is developed based on integration of the methods of hydrogeological zonation and modeling of anomalously fast migration of radioactive contaminants from the land surface toward groundwater. This volume also includes the evaluation of the effect of preferential and episodic flow on transport of radionuclides toward the aquifers and risk assessment of groundwater vulnerability, which can further assist future researchers in developing remediation technologies for improving drinking water quality. Further, this volume sheds light on the consequences of groundwater contamination from nuclear disasters and assists with assessing the risks associated with contamination and developing effective remediation technologies. Volume highlights include discussions of the following: – Assessment of groundwater vulnerability to contamination from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster – Novel analytical results of the 25-year investigations of groundwater contamination caused by Chernobyl-born radionuclides – The wealth of data on different modes of radioactive transport in the atmosphere, water, and soils, and along the food chains – The hydrogeological and physico-chemical processes and factors in groundwater contaminated zones – The applicability of commonly used methods of the evaluation of groundwater vulnerability – A unique method of fluid dynamics that involves an anomalously fast migration of contaminants through zones of preferential flow from the land surface toward groundwater – Building confidence in the assessment of migration pathways of radionuclides in the biosphere – Assessment and prediction of the consequences of the nuclear accident, which can shed light on protection from global nuclear accidents – Analogue information for different nuclear waste disposal and environmental projects around the world

In the present book an effort has been made to give an introduction to groundwater specially its detection technique, quality, contamination and precaution for the storage & recharging are discussed. The importance of groundwater in meeting the growing demand from agriculture, industry and domestic sectors, but by getting groundwater form the water harvesting and groundwater recharging activity is always associated with an insertion of contaminants like pesticides and agrochemicals used for the agricultural purpose. These contaminants may convert the pure form of water i.e. groundwater to polluted water. The need of an in depth survey with respect to presence of such contaminants in groundwater due to recharging is taken in to consideration for the present study.

Groundwater allocation determines who is able to use groundwater resources, how, when and where. It directly affects the value (economic, ecological, socio-cultural) that individuals and society obtain from groundwater, today and in the future. Building on the 2015 OECD publication Water Resources Allocation: Sharing Risks and Opportunities, this report focuses on groundwater and how its allocation can be improved in terms of economic efficiency, environmental effectiveness and social equity. Drawing on an analysis of groundwater’s distinctive features and nine case studies of groundwater allocation in a range of countries, the report provides practical policy guidance for groundwater allocation in the form of a "health check". This health check can be used to assess the performance of current arrangements and manage the transition towards improved allocation.

Hydrogeology: Principles and Practice provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of hydrogeology to enable the reader to appreciate the significance of groundwater in meeting current and future water resource challenges. This new edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect advances in the field since 2004. The book presents a systematic approach to understanding groundwater. Earlier chapters explain the fundamental physical and chemical principles of hydrogeology, and later chapters feature groundwater investigation techniques in the context of catchment processes, as well as chapters on groundwater quality and contaminant hydrogeology. Unique features of the book are chapters on the applications of environmental isotopes and noble gases in the interpretation of aquifer evolution, and on regional characteristics such as topography, compaction and variable fluid density in the explanation of geological processes affecting past, present and future groundwater flow regimes. The last chapter discusses groundwater resources and environmental management, and examines the role of groundwater in integrated river basin management, including an assessment of possible adaptation responses to the impacts of climate change. Throughout the text, boxes and a set of colour plates drawn from the authors’ teaching and research experience are used to explain special topics and to illustrate international case studies ranging from transboundary aquifers and submarine groundwater discharge to the over-pressuring of groundwater in sedimentary basins. The appendices provide conversion tables and useful reference material, and include review questions and exercises, with answers, to help develop the reader’s knowledge and problem-solving skills in hydrogeology. This accessible textbook is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students primarily in earth sciences, environmental sciences and physical geography with an interest in hydrogeology or groundwater science. The book will also find use among practitioners in hydrogeology, soil science, civil engineering and planning who are involved in environmental and resource protection issues requiring an understanding of groundwater. Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , course: PhD Environmental Science, language: English, abstract: Groundwater manganese concentration from the Chandrapur district of Central India was assessed during winter 2012. Groundwater sampling was carried out by grab sampling method in 36 sampling locations comprised of 34 hand pumps and two dug wells. Groundwater samples for manganese were preserved by adding conc. Groundwater manganese concentrations were estimated by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy. Groundwater iron concentration from the study area during winter 2012 was in the range of 0.0015-1.85 mg/L (SD±0.36). Groundwater manganese concentration in seven water samples were above the permissible desirable limit of Indian Standards for drinking water (IS 10500:2012, desirable limit for Mn, 0.3 mg/L max.). This elevated concentration of manganese in groundwater from the study area can be attributed to weathering of mineral bearing rocks, mining activities and also to some extent to anthropogenic activities. Spatial distribution of manganese was observed in the study area. Further, shallow, deep and very deep well water had variable manganese concentration. Upper earth surface had lower manganese concentration, however present, can be attributed to anthropogenic activities whereas deeper earth surface had higher manganese concentration that can be assigned to geogenic origin.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, grade: 4, University of Oulu, language: English, abstract: Groundwater plays an important role in feeding springs and streams, supporting wetlands and land surface stability. In Finland, most water is held in the soil than the surface systems. Hence, Finland's water resources depend on groundwater and biogeochemical processes. The study of groundwater in peatland is important for maintaining ecological balance and conservation of water resources. The groundwater level is one of the key indicators of aquifer conditions and groundwater basins. It helps to interpret hydrogeology, groundwater flow, groundwater sustainability and land usability. The study tries to analyze ground water recharge on peatland catchments using hydrograph recession analysis. The equation for the hydrograph recession curve can be utilized to predict groundwater recharge during each recession period. The steps involved during recession curve analysis includes selection of analytical expression, derivation of recession characteristic and optimization of the parameters. While computing groundwater recharge with recession curve, the high variability of each recession segments creates major problem. Each segment shows the outflow process which creates short-term or seasonal influence. The variation in rate of recession which causes problems for derivation of recession...

This study has considered migration from rural areas of Upper East Region to rural areas of Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. In assessing the impact in the region of destination, short-term effects have been distinguished from long-term effects. The former is initial felling of trees and more intensive land use, and application of techniques so that the migrant households could earn from on-farm work. In the longer term, migrants are expected to follow the examples set by the indigenous population and adjust their techniques. Land acquisition is crucial to destination rural migrant farm households. A model on tenancy contracts has been formulated and empirical results show the importance of liquidity constraints in the acreage decisions of migrant households. Moreover, the farm households could generate income from other non-farm activities necessary for reducing liquidity constraints and assisting in financing farm activities and also benefit the origin households of the outmigrants through remittances. The study thus extends the debates on demographic changes, migration and its environmental implications at the migrant place of destination.

This book discusses the dynamics of poverty and their effects on children in Ghana. Using the Northern Region of Ghana as a case study, the causes of poverty among households, how poverty impedes child development, and the available interventions to mitigate the negative effects of poverty on children in the Region were examined. From the research, poverty levels manifested as low income levels, low educational attainment and illiteracy, and low healthcare of parents. Poverty levels were also high among informal workers particularly farmers. The research revealed dire effects of poverty on children-- particularly on their education, healthcare and risks of becoming street children. These factors made it difficult for poor households to truncate the vicious cycle of poverty as children were not provided with the needed environment to develop to their full potentials. We recommended an increase emphasis on child development issues through participatory design of national and local interventions for children, capacity building, and research on child development issues in Ghana.

Disclaimer: The views expressed in this book are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the Coalition of Chiefs for Bono East Region. Political administrative regions are created in response to complex economics, politics, and endless array of forces. In a developing country such as Ghana, region creation is primarily seen as part of a broad process of industrialization as a result of spatial dynamics of population and economic activity.New regions affect population dynamics as, for instance, when businesses extend their presence and operations into them. This increases the population of the existing districts and municipals within the region. Those districts and municipals that become too big may be split up into smaller units. Thus, the new district and municipal assemblies join the existing ones to spread socioeconomic development across the country through local governance. This helps fulfill the core mandate of districts and municipals, as drivers of socioeconomic development. To help minimize historical distortion, this book tells about the untold story behind the Bono East Region and the impressive contributions made by certain individuals. This will serve as their legacy so that future generations can read about those contributions and accord them their rightful places in history.

Hydrodynamics of Time-Periodic Groundwater Flow introduces the emerging topic of periodic fluctuations in groundwater. While classical hydrology has often focused on steady flow conditions, many systems display periodic behavior due to tidal, seasonal, annual, and human influences. Describing and quantifying subsurface hydraulic responses to these influences may be challenging to those who are unfamiliar with periodically forced groundwater systems. The goal of this volume is to present a clear and accessible mathematical introduction to the basic and advanced theory of time-periodic groundwater flow, which is essential for developing a comprehensive knowledge of groundwater hydraulics and groundwater hydrology. Volume highlights include: Overview of time-periodic forcing of groundwater systems Definition of the Boundary Value Problem for harmonic systems in space and time Examples of 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional flow in various media Attenuation, delay, and gradients, stationary points and flow stagnation Wave propagation and energy transport Hydrodynamics of Time-Periodic Groundwater Flow presents numerous examples and exercises to reinforce the essential elements of the theoretical development, and thus is eminently well suited for self-directed study by undergraduate and graduate students. This volume will be a valuable resource for professionals in Earth and environmental sciences who develop groundwater models., including in the fields of groundwater hydrology, soil physics, hydrogeology, geoscience, geophysics, and geochemistry. Time-periodic phenomena are also encountered in fields other than groundwater flow, such as electronics, heat transport, and chemical diffusion. Thus, students and professionals in the field of chemistry, electronic engineering, and physics will also find this book useful.

Project Report from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, , course: Human Ecology, 38 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Food insecurity and poverty are the greatest global challenges facing the world today. Their redress is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development in developing countries, particularly in Africa. Poverty continues to be pervasive, intractable and inexcusable in the developing world particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. Extreme poverty ravages the lives of one in every four in the developing world (i.e. 1.2 billion people). The farming of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) is being promoted as a potential solution to the current high rates of malnutrition and poor health of the rural population, the degradation of tropical forests and the spread and intensification of poverty. However, the role of NTFPs in rural development in Ghana remains largely undervalued and understudied. This paper examines the contribution of NTFPs farming in enhancing poverty reduction, food security, sustainable forest management, and livelihoods improvement in the Sefwi Wiawso District (SWD) of the Western Region of Ghana. Groundwater flow modelling is important to calculatethe quantity and quality of groundwater for betterprotection and management. The modelled aquifer isextensively used for irrigation, municipal, anddomestic water supplies and this study documents thedevelopment and calibration of a numerical model tosimulate the groundwater flow. The model is also usedto show interaction between groundwater and surfacewater. A three-dimensional groundwater flow model, with one unconfined layer, was used to simulategroundwater flow in the Lake Awassa Basin. Asensitivity analysis to changes in model parametersincluding horizontal hydraulic conductivity, recharge, and pumpage was made. The study isimportant to start with for developing a moredetailed transient model.

Academic Paper from the year 2014 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Meteorology, Aeronomy, Climatology, , language: English, abstract: Climate change poses uncertainties to the supply and management of water resources. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the global mean surface temperature has increased 0.6 ± 0.2 oC since 1861, and predicts an increase of 2 to 4 oC over the next 100 years. Temperature increases also affect the hydrologic cycle by directly increasing evaporation of available surface water and vegetation transpiration. Consequently, these changes can influence precipitation amounts, timings and intensity rates, and indirectly impact the flux and storage of water in surface and subsurface reservoirs (i.e., lakes, soil moisture, groundwater). In addition, there may be other associated impacts, such as sea water intrusion, water quality deterioration, potable water shortage, etc. While climate change affects surface water resources directly through changes in the major long-term climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration, the relationship between the changing climate variables and groundwater is more complicated and poorly understood. The greater variability in rainfall could mean more frequent and prolonged periods of high or low groundwater levels, and saline intrusion in coastal aquifers due to sea level rise and resource reduction. Groundwater resources are related to climate change...

Gender inequality in most democratic countries in the world including Ghana has been a major setback to development. For instance, scholars have postulated on practical ideals and measures that countries could apply to close the gender gap if not completely eradicate women under-representation existing in most countries including Ghana. Ironically, Ghana's population is made up of over 52% females but has less than 10% of females occupying political and economic positions within the country. This study "Women and Democracy in Ghana" analyzes the existing scholarly debate and discussions about the cultural and institutional causes for the under-representation of women within its political system. In effect, the book provides systematic evidence on the under-representation of women in Ghana's parliament from independence in 1957 to the current legislature elected in December of 2008. Also included in the book is the tabular representation of women in Ghana's parliament from 1957 to present. The research reveals that the under-representation of women within the political system has contributed in undermining Ghana's democratic regime.

Groundwater is often a forgotten resource in Sri Lanka. Despite the fact that groundwater covers over 90 % of Sri Lanka's coastal freshwater consumption. Groundwater is very important and is the only source of fresh water in the northern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, especially in the sand stretches located between brackish water lagoons and the sea. It provides water for domestic use as well as for agriculture. Saltwater intrusion from both lagoon and sea can lead to lesser and lesser freshwater lens for the domestic purposes. Due to the saltwater intrusion, hundreds of acres of lands, hundreds of wells are in abandon stage at Jaffna Peninsula. Therefore this study was conducted to assess the extent of the saltwater intrusion at Vadamaradchi lagoon area.

The British Empire's open West African soreAs the 19th century progressed the inexorable expansion of the British Empire gained momentum across the globe. Imperial ambitions invariably resulted in British naval and military forces coming into conflict with indigenous peoples, who understandably resented intrusions into their territories and traditional ways of life. How problematic the resulting conflict proved to be for the British depended on two factors-the martial abilities of their opponents and the difficulty of the terrain for military operations. The more troublesome these factors were, particularly when combined, then the more likely it was that there would be no easy final outcome. It is significant that the first hostile engagements against the Ashanti tribe, of the West African Gold Coast region, broke out in 1806 and conflict with the British continued throughout the century-in at least five wars-until the final Ashanti defeat in 1900 and the incorporation of Ashanti territories into the Gold Coast colony in 1902. This book concentrates on the First Anglo-Ashanti War of 1823-31. It followed a pattern for British imperial wars with captured officers beheaded, bitter fighting in dense jungle with no favourable outcome guaranteed, and tropical diseases which reduced British numbers far more effectively than open battle ever could. The initial part in this Leonaur book is a first hand account of the conflict based on personal experience, and this is followed by a...

As technology advances, groundwater resources are under increasing threat from growing demands & contamination. To tackle this, a key is to be able to model the overall physics of groundwater flow & contaminants in the saturated zone. Models provide the required information for making decisions associated with the management of groundwater resources, & prevent a risk of contamination. Thus, this book focuses on how to simulate the groundwater flow & Advective contaminant transport in fractured hard rock terrain, the latter focusing on migration pathway & travel time of contaminants. It explains how to build conceptual model of the system domain, how to use GIS to create the spatially distributed input parameter of the model & how to resample them to grid size of the model so that it makes easier to assign their respective values to model grid through cell by cell mechanism. It also explains how to: estimate the groundwater recharge using various models, use of Digital Elevation Model to extract input parameters of flow model, simulate and calibrate the model, and finally how to use the calibrated model to simulate contaminant transport in the hard rock terrain.

Naturally occurring arsenic, as a water quality issue in South Asia, began to attract international attention in the early decade of the nineties, when widespread chronic arsenic poisoning cases became apparent in Bangladesh and later in West Bengal, India. Arsenic pollution in groundwater in this part of the subcontinent is a contentious issue. The scale of problem of arsenic contamination in groundwater is huge, and becomes complicated because of hydrogeochemical interactions arising from the groundwater exploitation. Long-term exposure to arsenic through drinking contaminated water resulting in a chronic arsenic poisoning. This book, therefore, provides salient water quality problems with special reference to arsenic and discusses human health implications and controls actions needed to protect the arsenic related health and productivity of the environment. With its systematic approach, the book will be of interest to not only postgraduate students of applied environmental and agriculture sciences, but also intended for researchers, academician and others actively involved in water quality studies.

Monochlorobenzene (MCB) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) are persistent groundwater contaminants worldwide. In this study, a pilot treatment facility - a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland with an open water compartment was established in Bitterfeld, Germany, and it was supplied with contaminated groundwater pumped from local aquifer. The degradation of MCB and PCE was measured and the relevant parameters were analyzed. The concentration of the organic contaminants was determined with GC/FID system, and stable isotope fractionation technique was used for the assessment of in-situ biodegradation of MCB and PCE. The results showed the effective removal of MCB and PCE in planted bed, especially in upper layer, and the isotope fraction analysis suggested that MCB and PCE may have different pathways that dominant the removal.

Ghana is not an exception as migration has become a common household survival strategy and the 'basic survival' strategy for individuals and families to enable them cope with difficult economic conditions. However, migration from the Northern Regions (comprising the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions) of the country to the economically rich regions in the Southern part of Ghana (particularly the Greater Accra Region) has been taking place for a very long time due to environmental problems, ethnic conflicts and endemic poverty. Men have dominated the process of migration from the North to the South to supply labour in the cocoa farms, industries and mining centres. Historically, the few women involved in the migration process have usually migrated to join their husbands. However, the trend has changed since the 1980s with more women migrating independently to urban centres in Southern Ghana to work as head porters (kaya yei) and in other jobs such as petty trading and housemaids.

In the third world countries, there is an urgent need for the promotion of equal rights for all especially women. Although there has been a remarkable burgeoning in the female emancipation struggle in Ghana, there still remains an enormous task in achieving equal rights for women. Ghana is a signatory to most of the international charters and protocols on the respect for the rights of women. Notwithstanding this, women are still being discriminated against in the Ghanaian society in several social contexts. This seems paradoxical and the goal of this book has been to explore the mechanisms that function to reinforce the phenomenon of discrimination against women in Ghana. What is discovered is a complex interplay between culture and low level of education among women in Ghana that have kept the fire of discrimination still glowing. To achieve a true equilibrium in terms of the enjoyment of rights between men and women in Ghana therefore demands simultaneous efforts in abolishing certain detrimental and archaic cultural practices, practices that oppress women, and also a promotion of the education of females in Ghana. This demands both national and international efforts.

In 1957 Ghana became one of the first sub-Saharan African nations to gain independence from colonial rule. Over the next decade, hundreds of African Americans--including Martin Luther King Jr., George Padmore, Malcolm X, Maya Angelou, Richard Wright, Pauli Murray, and Muhammad Ali--visited or settled in Ghana. Kevin K. Gaines explains what attracted these Americans to Ghana and how their new community was shaped by the convergence of the Cold War, the rise of the U.S. civil rights movement, and the decolonization of Africa. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's president, posed a direct challenge to U.S. hegemony by promoting a vision of African liberation, continental unity, and West Indian federation. Although the number of African American expatriates in Ghana was small, in espousing a transnational American citizenship defined by solidarities with African peoples, these activists along with their allies in the United States waged a fundamental, if largely forgotten, struggle over the meaning and content of the cornerstone of American citizenship--the right to vote--conferred on African Americans by civil rights reform legislation.

This paper determines the main predictors of petroleum use of vehicles from six predictor variables, and also developed a statistical model for their consumption. Data were collected on 121 common vehicles in Ghana from seven automobile companies in Accra, Ghana. Statistical analyses used included Pearson’s correlation and Best Subsets Regression, where the Mallow’s Cp and adjusted R-square helped to determine the most adequate and plausible regression model. Key findings showed that weight, width, and horsepower were the highly, negatively and significantly correlated with petroleum use of vehicles. However, the best regression model for prediction involved only Weight and Horsepower. The study bears implications for prospective vehicle buyers, distributors and the Government.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, Vrije University Brussel (Human Ecology Department), 52 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The role of medicinal plants in traditional health care delivery in Ghana cannot be overemphasized. More than 250 indigenous trees and plants with healing properties have been scientifically catalogued in Ghana. Unfortunately, the very foundation upon which the medicinal plant species and the traditional health care system survive is threatened by deforestation. The rate of deforestation has increased by 50% over the last ten years, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The current area of intact forest is now estimated at between 10.9 and 11.8% of the original cover and 6.9% of the country's total area. Deforestation is changing the habitats of disease-carrying insects and creating conditions that may help to spread malaria, river blindness and other devastating illnesses. Moreover, since the majority of the rural poor in Ghana depends on traditional medicine for their health care needs, the present high rate of deforestation will have a detrimental effect on the heath care delivery system in the country. Important plant species will be lost to deforestation unless urgent measures are taken. This paper examines the impact of deforestation on medicinal plants in Ghana.

Groundwater is the most important source of fresh water supply for drinking all over the world. Groundwater samples from different location of Jhenaidaha Municipality have been analyzed to assess the chemical composition, source rock and quality. The parameter analyzed for the research are pH, TDS, EC, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, HCO3-, SO42-, PO43-, H4SiO4 and NO2-N. The analysis reveals that the cations and anions of the water shows the order of dominance as Ca2+>Mg2+> Na+>K+ and HCO3->Cl->SO42- respectively. The Na+/ (Na++Ca2+) weight ratio against TDS illustrates that the water is derived mainly from rock weathering; however few samples suggest dominance of evaporation crystallization process. Deduction of source rock demonstrates that carbonate weathering and cation exchange is predominant in almost all over the study area. Piper diagram indicates that the water is rich in Ca2+ + Mg2+ and HCO3- (temporary hard) in the study area. This study reveals that the water quality of shallow aquifers in Jhenaidaha Municipality is quite satisfactory and meets the drinking water standard of Bangladesh and WHO.

For in recent times, a lot of banks have rated Ghana a good destination to extend their operations, the competition in the banking industry has heightened. To ensure that banks maintain adequate working capital, the industry regulator, i.e. the Bank of Ghana, issued a directive instructing all commercial banks to ensure that by the close of December 2012 their operating capitals do not fall below GH¢60million. At the close of December 2011, almost all foreign banks had complied. However, some of the local banks are sensing serious limitation in meeting the order. Therefore, the study has the objective to identify the challenges these banks have to face and thereby, the author will recommend avenues for raising funds to meet the proposed capital requirement. This study is based on six banks that operate in the Accra business district, namely the National Investment Bank (NIB), the Ecobank Ghana Ltd. (ECB), the Prudential Bank, the Ghana Commercial Bank, the Merchant Bank Ghana and the Zenith Bank. Primary data was obtained by soliciting views from bank officials on questions as the following. Which challenges confront Ghanaian Banks in their cash mobilization efforts? How could the banks generate more funds from the Ghana Stock Exchange? What efforts were made to secure funding from strategic investors? How could they reduce operating cost to enhance working capital? The second data set is based on financial statements and brochures of the banks. There was a direct approach to ...
