Practical, effective, evidence-based reading interventions that change students' lives Essentials of Understanding and Assessing Reading Difficulties is a practical, accessible, in-depth guide to reading assessment and intervention. It provides a detailed discussion of the nature and causes of reading difficulties, which will help develop the knowledge and confidence needed to accurately assess why a student is struggling. Readers will learn a framework for organizing testing results from current assessment batteries such as the WJ-IV, KTEA-3, and CTOPP-2. Case studies illustrate each of the concepts covered. A thorough discussion is provided on the assessment of phonics skills, phonological awareness, word recognition, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Formatted for easy reading as well as quick reference, the text includes bullet points, icons, callout boxes, and other design elements to call attention to important information. Although a substantial amount of research has shown that most reading difficulties can be prevented or corrected, standard reading remediation efforts have proven largely ineffective. School psychologists are routinely called upon to evaluate students with reading difficulties and to make recommendations to address such difficulties. This book provides an overview of the best assessment and intervention techniques, backed by the most current research findings. Bridge the gap between research and practice Accurately assess the reason(s) why a student struggles in reading Improve reading skills using the most highly effective evidence-based techniques Reading may well be the most important thing students are taught during their school careers. It is a skill they will use every day of their lives; one that will dictate, in part, later life success. Struggling students need help now, and Essentials of Understanding and Assessing Reading Difficulties shows how to get these students on track.

Hamed Ghaemi Online Reading Strategies and the Choice of Offline Reading Strategies

According to some unofficial researches and my own experience in the field of teaching reading skill , I have found that some students had many problems when they were being asked to read some online text especially when they were supposed to participate in an on-line reading comprehension test. So I tried to find out the reason or reasons of this problem. The first probability for this problem was that the difference between on-line and off-line environment influenced the students' performance in an on-line reading comprehension test. The second probability that I have made for this problem was that having a high level of IT literacy had any effect on the performance of students in the on-line reading comprehension test or not. And the last hypothesis for investigating the reason of this problem was that students may have employed inappropriate strategies while they were reading on-line. All these probabilities and hypotheses have led the researcher toward formulating the null hypotheses of this study. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of on-line Reading strategies on the choice of off-line Reading strategies of Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners.

TEACH YOUR STUDENTS TO READ LIKE CHAMPIONS—WITH RIGOR, INDEPENDENCE, PRECISION, AND INSIGHT The world we are preparing our students to succeed in is one bound together by words and phrases. Our students learn their literature, history, math, science, or art via a firm foundation of strong reading skills. When we teach students to read with precision, rigor, and insight, we are truly handing over the key to the kingdom. Of all the subjects we teach reading is first among equals. Grounded in advice from effective classrooms nationwide, enhanced with more than 40 video clips, Reading Reconsidered takes you into the trenches with actionable guidance from real-life educators and instructional champions. The authors address the anxiety-inducing world of Common Core State Standards, distilling from those standards four key ideas that help hone teaching practices both generally and in preparation for assessments. This 'Core of the Core' comprises the first half of the book and instructs educators on how to teach students to: read harder texts, 'closely read' texts rigorously and intentionally, read nonfiction more effectively, and write more effectively in direct response to texts. The second half of Reading Reconsidered reinforces these principles, coupling them with the 'fundamentals' of reading instruction—a host of techniques and subject specific tools to reconsider how teachers approach such essential topics as vocabulary, interactive reading, and student autonomy. Reading Reconsidered breaks an overly broad issue into clear, easy-to-implement approaches. Filled with practical tools, including: 44 video clips of exemplar teachers demonstrating the techniques and principles in their classrooms (note: for online access of this content, please visit my.teachlikeachampion.com) Recommended book lists Downloadable tips and templates on key topics like reading nonfiction, vocabulary instruction, and literary terms and definitions. In Literacy Strategies for Grades 4-12: Reinforcing the Threads of Reading, Karen Tankersley provides a multiplicity of practical, research-based reading strategies tailored specifically for use with older students. These students may no longer have a reading class as part of the school day, but they are still developing their reading skills--and every teacher contributes to that effort. As in her previous book, The Threads of Reading: Strategies for Literacy Development, Tankersley here focuses on the six foundational "threads" necessary for effective reading--phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and higher-order thinking--only this time with a focus on the last four threads, which are especially pertinent to the higher grades. By examining the criteria necessary for success in each thread, she shows how we can better teach struggling readers to Develop and expand on content-specific vocabulary. Read text accurately, smoothly, and with proper phrasing. Extract and construct meaning through reading. Critically evaluate, synthesize, analyze, and interpret text. The book includes a broad array of exercises, from individualized 15-minute projects to semester-long whole-class assignments. In addition to addressing the needs of older students, these strategies can be used to help teach English language learners the rudiments of reading in English. They are easy for teachers to implement, fun for students to do, and most importantly, ...

How can teachers make sure that all students gain the reading skills they need to be successful in school and in life? In this book, Karen Tankersley describes the six foundational "threads" that students need to study in order to become effective readers: phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and higher-order processing. For each area, the author explains how students acquire the reading skills they need and offers a series of skill-building strategies and activities that teachers can use in the classroom. Although reading is perhaps most intensely taught in the kindergarten and 1st-grade classrooms, Tankersley emphasizes that helping students become lifelong readers is a task for all teachers, including content-area teachers in middle and high schools. The Threads of Reading addresses key questions about literacy, such as*What makes a difference in reading achievement?*How much reading time is enough?*How can teachers use writing to build reading skills?*How can teachers help students make meaning from their reading? The strategies in this book address many situations, from individual instruction to small- or large-group instruction, from kindergarten to high school. Teachers will appreciate the multitude of activities provided, and administrators will learn to better evaluate the reading programs in place in their districts and schools. P. David Pearson, University of California, Berkeley, and founding editor of the Handbook of Reading Research. Reading for Understanding is a monumental achievement. This book consists of essays presented as lectures to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The context was a special class during which students were reading the published work of Erving Goffman and writing about what they were reading. Some students enrolled as philosophy students and others as sociology students. Professor Hood and Professor Van De Vate often handed out printed versions to the students on the day they were presented. Dr. Hood took these printed versions to prepare the manuscript in a continuous form. The lectures themselves were presented some years apart, since the two departments agreed to offer the course only occasionally. The essays were designed to stimulate questions about what Goffman concludes, as well his techniques of observing and analyzing social life.

Many, if not most, American high school students have a difficult time with mathematics. The question becomes why. When comparing the math abilities of incoming foreign-born students with native-born students, one apparent distinct difference was that the foreign-born students were becoming bilingual as they were studying math in school. The foreign-born students had to learn the alphabet to form words in English. Does mathematics have an alphabet, and if it does, how is it used to form mathematical sentences? Is there a correlation between the two because mathematics is considered to be the universal language? The germination of that idea is the rationale for this effort.

Upali Sedere .Feminization. of Teaching Profession in Sri Lanka

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: Krieg (2005) in his review of impact of teacher gender on student gender states that while a large body of research focuses on the gender of students, less research explores the impacts of a teacher's gender on students (Hopf & Hatzichristou 1999 ). Evidence suggests that male teachers tend to be more authoritative whereas female teachers tend to be more supportive and expressive (Meece, 1987 ). A survey of 20 teachers indicates that male teachers are likely to select a more aggressive disciplinary approach toward boys while teachers of either gender tended to ignore boys' disruptive behavior than that of girls when the behavior was not aggressive (Rodriguez, 2002). Krieg (2005) further reveals that researchers have found that teachers interact differently with students of similar gender than they do with students of opposite gender Einarsson, C., & Granström, K. (2002 ) This includes evidence suggesting disciplinary procedures and proclivity to discipline vary by both student and teacher gender. Likewise, a teacher's perception of student characteristics and abilities appear to systematically vary by gender. Other studies find male students benefit at the expense of female students in the amount and quality of interaction received from teachers of both genders. What has yet to be determined is how these differences in disciplin...

Gay Ivey, Douglas Fisher Creating Literacy-Rich Schools for Adolescents

In Creating Literacy-Rich Schools for Adolescents, authors Gay Ivey and Douglas Fisher make a compelling case that all teachers—across the content areas—have a role to play in students’ development of literacy, which they define as reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.Rather than focusing solely on reading instruction and the cliché that says “all teachers are teachers of reading,” they urge teachers to incorporate rich literacy-based learning experiences into their classrooms, with the goal of helping students to learn and think across the curriculum. With research-based findings, engaging examples, and extensive lists of resources, Ivey and Fisher encourage readers to*Reexamine the materials, experiences, and expectations of the English/language arts classroom;*Use strategies to improve literacy in all the content areas and seek alternatives to the traditional textbook;*Make independent reading an important part of students’ ongoing literacy development;*Design and use interventions that really work for struggling students; and*Consider the schoolwide elements—professional development, peer coaching, leadership, and assessment—that should be in place to support teachers and students.Essential questions provide the focus for each chapter, and Quality Indicators for Secondary Literacy help readers gauge where they are on the continuum of providing a meaningful literacy experience for students. Creating Literacy-Rich Schools for Adolescents will inspire educators...

Educating the Evolved Mind. Conceptual Foundations for an Evolutionary Educational Psychology (PB)

In this volume, David Geary provides a comprehensive theory that brings children's education into the 21st century, and provides directions for the development of a new discipline, evolutionary educational psychology. Geary presents the case that a scientifically grounded approach to children's schooling and, to a lesser degree, their later occupational interests can be informed by recent advances in the application of evolutionary theory to the understanding of the human brain, mind, and its development. He develops a taxonomy of evolved cognitive abilities and describes how, from an evolutionary perspective, these abilities are modified and refined during childhood. From there, he lays the framework for understanding the relation between evolved abilities, such as language, and the non-evolved competencies that are built from them with schooling, such as reading. Geary describes the mechanisms, such as working memory, that enable humans to transform evolved cognitive abilities into culturally important, school taught competencies. These are integrated with discussion of human intellectual history and cultural evolution, and the sources of children's motivation to learn inside and outside of the classroom. In all, this may well be the most revolutionary theory of children's schooling since Rousseau.

You’ll learn . . . Who should decide which books students should be reading What it takes to create a culture of reading Where books can and should be found in your school Why books need to come with a “no strings attached” policy How to lead the way by sharing what you are reading now Rather than focusing exclusively on Lexile scores and reading levels, Ellis encourages leaders to integrate literacy everywhere. The ultimate goal is to make reading a joy for every member of the school community—starting with the lead reader. A volume in Lifespan LearningSeries Editors Paris S. Strom, Auburn Universityand Robert D. Strom, Arizona State UniversityTeaching adolescents and learning from them is the paradigm elaborated throughout this secondedition of Adolescents in the Internet Age. The premise is based upon four assumptions: (1) Adolescentshave unique experiences that qualify them as the most credible source on what growing up is like in the currentenvironment; (2) Adolescents are more competent than many adults with tools of technology that willbe needed for learning in the future; (3) Adolescents and adults can support mutual development by adoptingthe concept of reciprocal learning; and (4) The common quest of adolescents to gain adult identity couldbe attained before employment.Expectations are the theme for every chapter. The reason expectations are so important is becausethey influence goals, determine priorities, and are used to evaluate progress and achievements of individualsand institutions. When teacher expectations correspond with the abilities and interests of students, achievement and satisfaction are common outcomes. In contrast, if teachers expect too little, student potentialcan be undermined. There is also concern if expectations that students have for themselves surpass their abilities. This occurs if teachers do notinform students about their deficits. Multitasking, doing too many things at the same time, detracts from productivity. Sharing accountability dependsupon complimentary...

As elegantly practical as it is theoretically elegant. It is a guided tour, as one examines the tools of expert teachers as they engage students in a journey that is aptly dubbed Reading Apprenticeship?learning how to become a savvy, strategic reader under the tutelage of thoughtful, caring, and demanding teachers.? P. David Pearson, University of California, Berkeley, and founding editor of the Handbook of Reading Research. Reading for Understanding is a monumental achievement. It was a monumental achievement when it came out as a first edition in 1999, bringing years of rigorous reading research together in a framework for teaching that made sense in actual secondary school classrooms. Now, just thirteen years later, Schoenbach and Greenleaf have several randomized clinical trials and multiple on-going studies at their fingertips to demonstrate the effects of this approach for developing the reading and thinking of young people in our nation?s middle and high school classrooms, as well as in community college classrooms. Their careful work on developing disciplinary literacy among all students represents a passion for and commitment to supporting students?and their teachers?in reading for understanding, which translates to reading for enjoyment, self-awareness, learning, and for purposeful and informed action in our society. ?Elizabeth Moje, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Associate Dean for Research, School of Education, University of Michigan Reading Apprenticeship has proven to be an inspiration to Renton Technical College faculty and students alike. They have learned together to view themselves as readers in transformative ways, as they embrace powerful techniques to increase reading comprehension.
