The observed experimental results, after through various investigations suggest and confirm that 10% and 25% blending of all the two fly ashes (LC and HC) in OPC (composites) when used with distilled water have higher strength than DW control. But blends with SW (25%) and with LC fly ash alone have higher strength than DW control. When 10%, 25% and 40% of OPC is replaced by fly ash, the net compressive strength of composites at 180days with both DW and SW. From all the three percentage of fly ash composites, 25% fly ash composites of LC fly ash gives a higher amount of hydration product due to its pozzolanic reaction. The strength gain can be written in the order 25% > 10% > control > 40% for both water. In the case of HC fly ash, the composites with DW has higher values whereas with SW has slightly a lower value (only 3%) than the control. The SW composites containing 10% fly ash would be as good as that of control paste whereas 25% fly ash would be better than that of control paste. It is inferred that the replacement of low CaO fly ash (25%) in cement hydrated with sea water (in salinity 35% water) is free from sulphate attack.

Hydrometallurgical and chemical extraction technologies provide a process route for resource recovery of valuable metals from both primary as well as secondary resources. Although the leaching of coal fly ash (CFA) has been a subject of active study in recent years, information is limited regarding the separate leaching of alumina phases in the ash. This book explores factors that influence the process of aluminium extraction from CFA. Data collection and analysis techniques involved experimentation strategies such as statistical design of experiments (DOE), response surface methodology (RSM) and central composite rotatable design (CCRD). Based on the response characteristics of the two alumina phases, a two-step acid leach technique was formulated to extract aluminium from CFA using an inorganic acid. The book makes a technical contribution by providing information which can further be used as a basis for developing viable alternative process technologies for the production of smelter grade alumina from CFA. Water is a valuable product, which should be used carefully. Increased global consumption of water has become a growing concern from a few decades, which has increased the demand of water recycling and reuse of waste-water by treating it with appropriate methods and technologies to meet the needs and aspirations of future generation. The reuse and recycling of laundry waste-water was carried out at lab scale. In this study, two random laundries were selected. A survey of PU and LCWU hostel laundries was made to characterize the laundry waste-water. A low cost sand and gravel filter was designed to reuse the laundry waste-water for the first rinse. Treated water was considered as low-grade water, which was found suitable for the first rinse of clothes in both laundries. By the uses of this low-grade water, 0.7m3 and 0.8m3 of fresh water from PU and LCWU laundries could be save daily.

The EU regulations are restrictive with regard to solid residues and waste management. Research efforts to develop satisfying solutions are thus necessary. The GEOASH project aims, on one hand, at producing new geopolymeric matrixes using the advantageous properties of fine particles extracted from (co)-combustion fly ashes for the long-term stabilisation of inorganic hazardous wastes and, on the other, at predicting technologies for the recycling of coal ashes into added-value products which could be integrated in manufacture processes, allowing a reduction of primary resources consumption. The new geopolymer matrixes produced at room temperature in moderate alkaline conditions display a compressive strength of 60-80 MPa that is not affected by the particle size of the starting fly ashes. High content of unburned carbon (10 %) in the fly ash inhibits the reactions. The higher the amorphous phases content in fly ashes the higher the polymerisation degree typical of the geopolymer framework.

Continual industrialization has resulted in increased use of natural resources, which has also brought along serious ecological and environmental imbalance due to the dumping of industrial wastes. Principles of sustainable construction have to be accepted with regard to the consumption of natural resources and the production of harmful emissions. The replacing of cement in concrete mixtures with more sustainable materials is necessary. Over a period of last ten years, the image of fly ash has completely been changed from a "waste" to "resource material". Fly ash if segregated, collected and used properly can solve the major problems of cement use with a number of benefits: extends the life cycle of concrete, reduces energy use and also the amount of coal combustion products disposed in landfills. Book demonstrates the suitability of using Slovak fly ash as cement replacement in the construction industry, especially in concrete road pavements. Conclusions have been prepared based on assessment results in the following fields: quality of concretes, impact of hazardous elements on humans, economic indicators and LCA results of tested concretes.

We produced carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by pyrolysis of composite films of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with fly ash and physically/chemically modified fly ash at 500 °C for 10 min under a nitrogen flow of 2 L/min. Different geometrical structures, e.g.; knotted and twisted, U- and spiral-shaped, bamboo-shaped, rod, fiber and ribbon-shaped CNT materials were observed in the images of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The widths of the CNT ribbons measured in TEM varied in the ranges 18 ~ 80 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed five types of carbon binding peaks, C-C/C-H, C-O-H, -C-O-C, C=O and -O-C=O with different percentages. The ratio of intensities of G and D bands, IG/ID show different values analysed by Raman Spectroscopy in relation with nature of fly ash particles. CNT materials grown on the surface of fly ash have potential for the fabrication of high-strength composite materials with polymer and metal.

Approximately 60% of those emissions are attributable to the decarbonation of limestone. A widespread approach for the reduction of the CO2-emissions is toreplace the clinker in the cement by pozzolanic waste materials, e.g. fly ash. The reaction of fly ash is generally slow. Due to this slow reaction cement pastes mixed of Portland cement and fly ash have a slower strength development than pure Portland cement, at least at early ages up to 7 days. The goal of this study was to increase early strength properties of Portland cement/fly ash blends by increasing the early ettringite formation in order to decrease the porosity. Therefore various amounts of anhydrite and laboratory synthesised C3A were added to Portland cement/fly ash systems that contained 30% fly ash. The behavior of these systems in terms of kinetics, phase development and microstructure was studied by means of strength tests, isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, chemical shrinkage, X-ray diffraction, backscattered electron image analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry and thermodynamic modeling. This work investigated the effect of Lafia-Obi coal particle sizes on fluidized bed combustor temperature, emission characteristics and coal ash content at various operating conditions. This was with a view to determining the suitability of Lafia-Obi coal in electrical power generation. Samples of coal were obtained from natural deposits in Lafia, Obi Local Government of Nassarawa state. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the sample were carried out using standard methods to determine the carbon, ash, volatile matter, and moisture content of the coal. The calorific value of the coal was determined using a bomb calorimeter, after which the coal was combusted in a fluidized bed. The results showed that Lafia-Obi coal had 2.91wt % moisture, 27.19 % volatile matter, 18.62 wt % ash and 51.28 wt % fixed carbon content. The volatile matter content, placed Lafia-Obi in the medium-volatile bituminous rank. The characteristic quantities of gas measured from the bench-scale FBC included a mean NOx emission of 455.35, 376.69, 323.35and 277.35 ppm for coal feed sizes of 10, 15, 20 and 25 mm respectively. In comparison to coal, the combustion of natural gas generates half the greenhouse gas emissions and does not produce harmful by-products such as sulphur, mercury, fly ash and particulate matter. Despite this, the rapid expansion of coal seam gas mining in Australia has raised significant concerns amongst the community. This project aims to determine if the production of CSG at commercially viable rates would adversely impact the environment, and if so, to what extent. An extensive literature review was undertaken and identified three main potential impacts associated with the rapid expansion of coal seam gas. These include; the fragmentation of agricultural land and habitat, groundwater contamination and diminished water supply, and emissions of greenhouse gasses. Case studies from the United States and Australia were also examined. The study found that the majority of literature publications expressed some concern towards the rapid expansion CSG mining in Australia, however a high level of uncertainty exists as to their direct environmental impact. The possibility of using black residual rice husk ash was investigated in this study. The black rice husk ash used was mostly amorphous silica and partially crystalline silica and its mean particle size of 12 µm. The black rice husk ash was applied in conventional concrete, self-consolidating concrete, high volume fly ash self consolidating concrete. The concretes were tested for both fresh and hardened stages, i.e. slump, slump flow, electrical resistivity, ultrasonic pulse velocity, chloride ion penetration, sulfate attack, length change, porosity and water absorption. The results show that up to 20% of black rice husk ash could be advantageously blended with cement without adversely affecting the strength and durability properties of both conventional and self-consolidating concretes. The high volume fly ash self consolidating concrete having 28-day compressive strength level of 28.47−44.98 MPa could be obtained with cement content of as low as 152−203 kg/m3 and the amount of fly ash and black rice husk ash of 60% in weight of binder amount. The above results definitively proved many possible applications of the black rice husk in concretes.

Thereby, the investigation focused on WEEE-batteries of a group of selected equipment types which did arise as waste from the German consumer sector in 2011. For the investigation, a calculation model was developed and furnished by data acquired through literature and market research, plant visits, expert interviews and experimental surveys. The results show that from a theoretical recycling potential of 41.7 ± 7.2 tons of REE in WEEE-batteries, no REE are currently recovered in the sense of a functional recycling. Of the 364.3 ± 63.7 tons of cobalt contained in WEEE-batteries, only 47.8 ± 13.7 tons were separately recovered. The stabilisation of contaminated soil by CKD improved the soil characteristics to some extent. The value of cohesion can be increased nearly linear by addition of CKD. Swelling is reduced by increasing amount of CKD which leads to the conclusion that the swelling behavior of the soil can be effectively controlled by the addition of CKD. From this study, the CKD may be effectively utilized in improvement of hydrocarbon contaminated soil. The stabilisation of contaminated soil by fly ash improved the soil characteristics to some extent. From the overall observations of the study that, the stabilisation of diesel engine oil contaminated soil using fly ash has been observed to be effective.

Recycling of SCBA waste in productive construction activities will yield us profoundly positive results in terms of environmental protection, waste management practices, and saving of raw materials.

Concrete is a versatile construction material. For more durable and strong structures, the concrete of high strength is required. To make concrete more strong, pozzolans are added to concrete. Metakaolin ( MK ) is a pozzolana used to achieve the required strength. The present study investigates the characteristics strength of concrete due to partial replacement of cement by MK and addition of polypropylene fibres (PPF). M30 concrete was designed according to BIS guidelines. The investigation was carried out on concrete containing MK and PPF at various proportions of 0%, 7%, 8% and 9% of MK and 0%, 0.2%, 0.5% and 0.8% of PPF. Fly ash (10%) and superplasticizer (0.7%) has been added to improve the workability of concrete. In present study, the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of concrete containing metakaolin and fly ash were analysed. Analysis of cement, metakaolin and fly ash was done with XRD. Samples K0, K4, K8 and K12 containing 0%, 7%, 8% and 9% MK (by weight of cement) respectively at the sample age of 1 day were also analysed with XRD.

Due to the high number of food and drink industries in the UK, these are estimated to consume about 36% of this energy with a waste heat recovery potential of 2.8 TWh. This work presents the importance of waste heat recovery in the process industries in general, and in the UK food industry in particular, with emphasis on the fryer section of the crisps manufacturing process, which has been identified as one of the energy-intensive food industries with high waste heat recovery potential

Understanding recycling labels it is becoming more difficult for the average person. The primary data in this report was acquired by quantitative closed and derelict questions questionnaire survey method. The SPSS software program was used to analyse the primary data.
