Reflection-on-practice has become a critical component of teacher professional development over the past decade. As a result, it is increasingly important for teacher educators to better understand the relationship between reflection and the development of professional expertise. This study involved a particular kind of self-reflection that utilized video of credential candidates' own teaching as the object of reflection. Reflection on the lesson was facilitated by either mental recall or videotaped lesson analysis. Video analysis is a powerful tool to support the growth of preservice teachers in making the critical connections between theoretical pedagogy and classroom interactions. Video analysis of their own classroom performance can shift reflections from being centered on teacher actions to looking more broadly at teacher and student interactions. The effects of video analysis can persist over time and supported the professional growth of new teachers. The results of this study strongly suggest that professional development activities that target improved reflection-on-practice through the use of video analysis can be effective.

This book is an exploration of student teachers experiences of teachers' professional identity within the context of curriculum change. It is the product of a qualitative exploratory case study of student teachers experiences. The book theorises that teachers professional identity is a fluid concept as such student teachers need an arsenal to fully function as teachers. The book discusses four major issues (the complicated demand teaching places on the student teacher, the curriculum or the sum total of what happens in schools, the relationship between content and pedagogy and finally professional development) that experiencing teachers' professional identity is all about. It also picks up on the nuanced and challenging nature of the teaching and learning process and ultimately provides a way forward for student teachers professional development. The book also recommends a thorough interrogation and restructuring of teacher education courses in most universities and admonished stake holders to take into consideration the challenges student teachers go through when experiencing teachers' professional identity to improve teacher education.

Teacher evaluation--a term that brings fear, anticipation, stress, anxiety, or even boredom to the hearts of teachers and administrators everywhere. How can we reinvent teacher evaluation so that it really makes a difference--so that everyone in school benefits from it, so that teachers and administrators learn from it, so that students succeed as a result of it? The bad news is that many schools and districts seem to be stuck in old ruts, involving The Observation, The Behavior Checklist, and The Conference. The good news is that many districts have paved the way for teacher evaluation to actually become professional development, by using a three-track evaluation system:* Track I, for beginning teachers, promotes growth and new learning through mentoring, frequent observations, and support systems.* Track II, for tenured teachers--that is, most teachers in the system--promotes professional learning experiences through self-assessment, goal setting, data collection, formative evaluations, study groups, action plans, and evaluation in which teachers play an active role.* Track III, for tenured teachers needing assistance, focuses on remediating difficulties and recommending further action.More good news: Through concrete examples, useful forms, and assessment tools, this book provides a clear roadmap to effective teacher evaluation systems that combine quality assurance with professional development for all teachers.

In past decade, the use of ICT in schools increased exponentially. However, ICT integration in teaching is still utilized at a low level. While many ICT professional development programs for teachers focus mainly on developing teachers' technical competency, the effect of their attitude, perception and emotion towards ICT integration is usually neglected. In this book, a social approach to professional development of ICT integration is argued to be important to improve ICT integration. A research was conducted to look at issues of ICT integration from the teachers' perspective and to explore the impact of peer support in enhancing ICT professional development. Based on the research findings, this book draws the focus on developing teachers' intrinsic motivation towards ICT integration. Peer support is found to be an enabler of intrinsic motivation. A sustainable peer support enhanced professional development model is thus developed. This book should help shed some light on developing ICT professional development programs for teachers and should be especially useful to teachers, professional developers and school leaders who want to lift ICT integration to a higher level.

How can we approach professional development in a thoughtful way, keep teachers motivated, and make the process worthwhile? It's a truth that school leaders can't deny: teachers tend to think of PD as a distraction from the "real work" of the classroom-as something to get through instead of an opportunity to engage, learn, and grow as professionals. Too often, they're absolutely right. When PD is packaged as a one-size-fits-all, one-and-done experience, even content that teachers might greet with enthusiasm won't stay with them for long. It just doesn't stick. In Professional Development That Sticks, Fred Ende makes the case for a better approach-one that melds traditional PD structures with personalized learning. Here, school leaders will find a framework for developing professional learning experiences that spark and maintain teacher motivation and lead to real changes in practice. Ende's three-stage professional development for learning (PDL) process covers critical aspects of planning, providing, and following up. In addition, PDL's Think, Act, and Reflect method ensures your teachers will acquire meaningful, deep, "sticky" learning that lasts.

With research-based findings, engaging examples, and extensive lists of resources, Ivey and Fisher encourage readers to*Reexamine the materials, experiences, and expectations of the English/language arts classroom;*Use strategies to improve literacy in all the content areas and seek alternatives to the traditional textbook;*Make independent reading an important part of students’ ongoing literacy development;*Design and use interventions that really work for struggling students; and*Consider the schoolwide elements—professional development, peer coaching, leadership, and assessment—that should be in place to support teachers and students.Essential questions provide the focus for each chapter, and Quality Indicators for Secondary Literacy help readers gauge where they are on the continuum of providing a meaningful literacy experience for students. Creating Literacy-Rich Schools for Adolescents will inspire educators...

Through the chapters in this volume we learn about the research foci and/ or questions that these classroom teachers are interested in examining, the mathematics content through which they engaged their students in these explorations, the data sources they used to make sense oftheir focus and questions, and their roles in the research. An overarching theme through all the chapters in this volume is the learning and professional development that occurs through teacherresearch. What these authors learned about student learning and their own teaching practice far exceeded the focus of their particularresearch questions. For some, the research validated their beliefs and instructional practices; for others, it deepened or extended their understandingof mathematics, or raised their expectations of students' capabilities. For all, it is fair to say, their research increased their awarenessof how students come to know and understand mathematics, and enabled them to gain insight into the complexity of teaching. Lampert(2001) noted, "One reason teaching is a complex practice is that many of the problems a teacher must address to get students to learn occursimultaneously, not one after another" (p. 2). We, as readers, gain a window into these teachers' research within and about the complexity ofclassroom teaching.

Explore the complexity of teacher-student relationships in secondary school settings and learn how these largely unscripted relationships function for students and teachers in their learning and socioemotional development. For teachers, the relationships provide a foundation for pedagogical and curricular endeavors and lead to their increased investment in students’ growth, development, and academic success. Students who have such relationships feel more comfortable in their learning environments, interested in the material, and motivated to perform well. We discuss what these relationships look like from the perspectives of teacher and student. Topics include: Drawing appropriate boundaries School-provided guidelines and guidance Formats for supporting teachers A whole school approach to working on students’ emotional challenges Relationships in after-school programs. The voices of teachers and students in this volume show how much young people want to feel known and engage with teachers and how much teachers feel rewarded and invigorated by taking the step to connect with students on this level. This is the 137th volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions.

The inspiration for conducting this study was an interest in professional and organizational development. Focus in the theses is on professions concerning practices of care, e.g. teachers, nurses and leaders in social work. In this thesis, professional judgment is in focus, which refers to the understanding of complexity and conflicting interests at a workplace; but it can also be encountered in relational issues and in psychological maturity. This kind of competence is most often described as something you are which means it is considered to be a talent and furthermore regarded as something that cannot be learned in training. Studies on professional education and professional knowledge most often focus on theories and acquisition of skills and less often on the professional as a human being. However in this study, through the concepts of self-awareness and self-knowledge, the professional as a person is addressed. Questions of how to educate the professional as a persons is highligted by investigating training in self-development with psychosyntesis as a method. A phenomenological life-world approach is used in the qualitative analysis.
