Researchers from different paradigmatic backgrounds expressed a variety of views, the extremes ranging from a complete denial of the possibility of valid and reliable qualitative research on one hand to the rejection of validity and reliability as meaningful quality indicators on the other. The following essay acknowledges the diverging assumptions underlying the different paradigms associated with quantitative and qualitative research. However, it denies that validity and reliability are inherently connected to predetermined ontological or epistemological assumptions and argues for their general use as quality indicators. To clarify this claim, a selection of different paradigms and thedevelopment of alternative quality indicators within them are highlighted. Since the usefulness of this multitude of indicators is questionable, reconciliation is attempted by consolidating them. Teachers need to develop and apply proactive and positive attitudes to foster new levels of foreign language learning within their students. Teaching, on its own, is not a panacea for success. This paper investigates how teachers at the Universidad de Oriente (UO) in Santiago de Cuba search for and apply innovative ways of teaching foreign languages to their students within current boundaries.The results from this research show that there is a positive relationship between the level of proficiency in a foreign language and the methods and approaches teachers apply to keep students motivated and interested in the subject matter. The literature review from this study provided supportive evidence which was strengthened with insights from face to face interviews and a focus group meeting. The outcomes confirmed that students, who are exposed regularly to practical and diverse teaching methods, are more likely to exceed the expected foreign language proficiency levels set by the University's quality standards.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: In this thesis, the accuracy of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is explored with the help of a study investigating the German L2 morphosyntactic competence of 15 English L1 speakers in two settings: a language assessment test setting as well as in online processing.Within this thesis L2 morphosyntactic competence was limited to the two investigated areas of subject-verb-agreement (SVA) as well as the distinctive verb placement in German main and subordinate clauses. Previous research has identified these two linguistic areas as being especially prone to error in adult L2 acquisition of German. Since all test takers varied in their German language proficiency levels (encompassing a range from A2 to B2 according to the CEFR) it was hypothesised that L2 learners of a B2 language proficiency level generally outperform L2 learners of a lower language proficiency level (B1 and A2) in all investigated areas. However, this hypothesis could not be affirmed since the study did not find significant differences in the morphosyntactic competence of English German L2 learners between test takers of distinctive CEF language proficiency levels.

One important and integral part of high-stakes English language tests is the oral proficiency interview, which can be a pre-requisite to gaining admission to an English-speaking university.The volunteer participants were 25, 15-17-year-old Emirati students from two IGCSE ESL classes that I do not teach. This study included a videotaped mock oral proficiency IGCSE interview; audiotaped semi-structured individual interviews, questionnaires, and an audiorecorded semi-structured focus group discussion. The findings suggested that language and test anxiety is multi-faceted and can affect boys and girls in a number of different ways and at different times during class activities and also in an OPI. In addition, all participants showed different physical signs of test anxiety during the first two stages of the OPI, and these physical signs of test anxiety were considerably less frequent in the final part of the OPI. This book is designed for three purposes.First,is to determine the level of test anxiety among undergraduate proficiency students at Universiti Putra Malaysia. Second,to compare the level of test anxiety across gender,and finally,to investigate the relationship between test anxiety and English language performance. This study employed a survey design. 102 undergraduate ESL learners from Universiti Putra Malaysia participated in this study. Two instruments were used to gather data for this study. The first was The Suinn's Test Anxiety Questionnaire, and the second, Standard Proficiency Test of English. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test and Pearson correlation. The findings revealed that there was a high level of anxiety among students in general. The study also reported no significant difference on the level of anxiety across gender. Finally, a statistically significant negative correlation was observed between test anxiety and English language performance. The findings suggest effective counseling for students to reduce the level of test anxiety and the use of strategies for helping teachers in addressing the test anxiety problem among the undergraduates.

More specifically, it investigates the correlation among the level of foreign anxiety, the level of motivation and academic achievement of EFL students and gender differences. To this end, the study adopted the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS). The participants were 100 students (47 females and 53 males). The data was analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results indicated that participants experienced a moderate level of foreign language anxiety and motivation. Besides, the findings showed a negative significant correlation between two of foreign language anxiety variables (communication apprehension and test anxiety) and academic achievement while intrinsic motivation was positively and significantly correlated with academic achievement. Furthermore, the results revealed that all three components of FLCAS were correlated with intrinsic motivation to know. The present research compared the outcomes of Dual Language and Traditional Bilingual approaches on the acquisition of English, and the development of first language literacy for second language learners. The design used a two-way mixed factor analysis of variance, with groups (Dual Language and Transitional Bilingual) as the between subjects factor, and time of testing (pretest and posttest) as the within-subjects factor. The dependent variables included student performance on the ECLAS (an English proficiency assessment) and on EL SOL (a Spanish proficiency assessment. A one-way comparison between groups using scores from the NYSESLAT exam was conducted along with a descriptive analysis of NYSESLAT scores. Results of the study revealed an increase in language acquisition and oral literacy skills in English for both groups. The findings also indicated there was growth in most domains of native language oral and literacy skills. The outcomes further suggested that the Dual Language approach was more effective than Transitional Bilingual Education in the attainment of English proficiency for second language learners.

So far, the aim of any English course should develop students' communicative competence to the extent that they will be able to express themselves naturally, proficiently and appropriately. This study is conducted to check English language secondary school teachers' knowledge about communicative competence elements and to what extent they are able to teach communicative competence elements to secondary school students. The researcher uses a non-probability sampling, taking into account the representativeness of the whole districts of Yaff'ea. Seventy English language teachers (n=70) at secondary schools in Yaff'ea responded to the questionnaire. Moreover, the researcher observed fourteen English language teachers (n=14) to check their classroom practices. The researcher followed the multi-methods research design. Data were collected by using a semi-closed ended questionnaire and a structured classroom observation. Both data were analyzed quantitatively. The validity was checked depending on the pilot study and referees whereas the reliability was checked by using a test-retest method with an interval time of two weeks. The study aims to explore the sources of foreign language reading anxiety at Yarmouk University, Jordan. It is a study of two consecutive phases. The first phase is a qualitative exploration of the sources for which interviews and diaries were collected from six informants with different levels of English language proficiency. The second, is a quantitative phase that followed up on the qualitative phase for the purpose of expanding and generalizing the results of the generated themes. In the quantitative phase, a cross-sectional survey of 1500 number of undergraduate students who were taking Basic English courses was administered. A total of 1006 questionnaires was valid for analysis. However, only 408 questionnaires were randomly chosen according to the criteria of quota sampling techniques. The findings revealed that there were two aspects of foreign language reading anxiety: personal factor and text feature. Under the personal factor there were two main sources which are afraid of making errors and worry about reading effects. On the other hand, there were three main sources sources under the text feature which are unknown vocabulary, unfamiliar topic, and unfamiliar culture.

Self-regulated learning strategies have recently received a remarkable attention by researchers. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between self-regulated learning strategies and students' reading comprehension ability as well as their language proficiency. To do so, 115 university students majoring in TEFL were selected. First, a TOEFL test was given to the participants so as to determine their language proficiency as well as reading comprehension ability. Then, they were asked to fill out self-regulated learning strategies questionnaire. In order to analyze the data obtained, descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation were conducted. The results of data analyses revealed that there is a significant relationship between the students’ use of self-regulated learning strategies and their reading comprehension ability. Also, a significant correlation between the students’ use of self-regulated learning strategies and their language proficiency was found. Finally, the pedagogical message of this study is that teachers and students should incorporate self-regulated learning strategies into their teaching and learning process.

This book is a report of a study on the relationship between 8 types of intelligences and L2 reading skill. To fulfill this objective, a 20-item language proficiency test and an 80-item multiple intelligences questionnaire were distributed among 100 third grade male students of a high school in Azna, Iran. The data gathered were analyzed descriptively utilizing central tendency measures (mean and standard deviation), and inferentially using correlation, regression analysis and a paired-samples t-test. The results indicated that among different types of multiple intelligences just linguistic-verbal, logical-mathematical, spatial, and interpersonal intelligences have statistically positive relations with the level of their reading skill.

However, one of the most obvious potential explanations for the lack of success of L2 learners compared to L1 learners is that the acquisition of a foreign language begins at a later age than that of the mother tongue does. Thus, it has been prevalently assumed that age itself is a predictor of second language proficiency. This paper focuses on research which has been carried out on maturational constraints for SLA and hereby tries to find answers to various questions concerning age as a factor in SLA.

This book focuses on children’s language in a bilingual community in East Java, Indonesia. It has documented Javanese children’s language in relation to their proficiency, use and attitudes in a big city, a small town and a village. The questionnaires, tests, observation and interviews were employed. Children’s proficiency in Indonesian is higher than in Javanese. They are not able to manipulate Javanese speech levels properly. Most city children reported using Indonesian with their all interlocutors whereas most village children reported using Javanese. This indicates unnatural intergenerational language transmission in the city. Most children showed negative attitudes towards Javanese, their ethnic language. Javanese experiences domain shifting and is incompatible with the emergence of new domains in the modern time. Unless systematic support is forthcoming, Javanese will be abandoned by Javanese children, originated in the city.

This book presents two new outcome measures for patients with incomplete spinal cord injury. The Figure of Eight Test is a walking test that incorporates curve-walking and challenging situations like obstacles or cognitive distraction. It is a valid assessment tool in healthy subjects as well as subjects with incomplete spinal cord injury, and it adds information to the current gold standard, the 10m Walk Test. The Reaction and Execution Test is a lower extremity response time test, which is performed in a standing position. Subjects have to move their leg as fast as possible to one of five buttons in response to respective flashing lights. The test showed good validity and reliability in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury and correlated significantly with several strength and ambulatory functional outcome measures. Using the latter test, we also demonstrate that well-recovered subjects with incomplete spinal cord injury still suffer from motor deficits, although they showed similar strength values compared to a matched able-bodied group. Both outcome measures are also evaluated in a pilot randomized clinical trial comparing strength training with automated gait training.

The researcher prepared a questionnaire blended with selected items derived from Gardner's Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB), Dornyei (2001b), Cheng and Dornyei (2007) and Guilloteaux and Dornyei (2008) motivational strategies framework for foreign language classrooms. The study was conducted on two groups that included 35 students from the College of Engineering and the College of Computer Sciences in one group and 50 students from College of Business Administration in the second group and the responses from EFL teachers teaching at Jazan University. The results obtained through the responses on structured questionnaire were found almost similar for both groups and both are significantly affected by motivation. The results indicated that teaching strategies supporting motivation, curriculum and course material directly affect students' motivation and communicative competence.
