For avoiding carbon release and to sequester the carbon emissions from the forests and other sources, nations of the world are striving hard to design methodologies for monitoring carbon emission and sequester rates in the forests and other carbon pools. This book presents a research based on a very modern approach to estimate carbon in the moist temperate Himalayan forest of Ayubia National Park (ANP), Pakistan. Latest Geospatial techniques including Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) were incorporated to estimate carbon in the forest of ANP using the up-to-date statistical approaches. Objectives of this research included landcover mapping of the study area and estimating and mapping the carbon in the forest as well as biomass for the same area. High spatial resolution Satellite Pour I'Observation de la Terre-5 (SPOT-5) satellite imagery is used to map the landcover of the study area. Different bands from Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) and SPOT-5 satellite images have been incorporated with inclusion of topographic factors to estimate the carbon stock. This book describes the application of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar to earth remote sensing based on research at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). This book synthesizes all current research to provide practical information for both the newcomer and the expert in radar polarimetry. The text offers a concise description of the mathematical fundamentals illustrated with many examples using SAR data, with a main focus on remote sensing of the earth. The book begins with basics of synthetic aperture radar to provide the basis for understanding how polarimetric SAR images are formed and gives an introduction to the fundamentals of radar polarimetry. It goes on to discuss more advanced polarimetric concepts that allow one to infer more information about the terrain being imaged. In order to analyze data quantitatively, the signals must be calibrated carefully, which the book addresses in a chapter summarizing the basic calibration algorithms. The book concludes with examples of applying polarimetric analysis to scattering from rough surfaces, to infer soil moisture from radar signals.

This report summarizes the results of six year (1996-97 to 2002-03) of Remote Sensing (RS) based district-level wheat acreage estimates and agromet model predicted wheat yields. District-level preharvest wheat production forecast in major wheat growing districts in Himachal Pradesh was attempted under crop acreage and production estimation (CAPE) project. Single date Indian Remote Sensing Satellite digital data, coinciding with flowering to grain filling stage of wheat was analysed for wheat acreage estimation using maximum likely hood (MXL) supervised classification and district boundary mask approach. Agrometeorologial yield models were developed for wheat yield forecast using meteorological data such as minimum-maximum temperatures, rainfall and sunshine hours. The meteorological indices viz. Growing Degree Days (GDD), Temperature Difference (TD), Accumulated Rainfall (ARF) and Accumulated Sunshine Hours (ASH) were computed and used in model development. This report also brings out problems in wheat acreage estimation in hilly terrains using Remote Sensing data.

This monograph is the outcome of an American Geophysical Union Chapman Conference on longitude and hemispheric dependence of ionospheric space weather, including the impact of waves propagating from the lower atmosphere. The Chapman Conference was held in Africa as a means of focusing attention on an extensive geographic region where observations are critically needed to address some of the fundamental questions of the physical processes driving the ionosphere locally and globally. The compilation of papers from the conference describes the physics of this system and the mechanisms that control ionospheric space weather in a combination of tutorial-like and focused articles that will be of value to the upper atmosphere scientific community in general and to ongoing global magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere (MIT) modeling efforts in particular. A number of articles from each science theme describe details of the physics behind each phenomenon that help to solve the complexity of the MIT system. Because this volume is an outcome of the research presented at this first space science Chapman Conference held in Africa, it has further provided an opportunity for African scientists to communicate their research results with the international community. In addition, the meeting and this conference volume will greatly enhance the space science education and research interest in the African continent and around the world. Ionospheric Space Weather includes articles from six science themes that were discussed at the Chapman Conference in 2012.
