Bangladesh has one of the highest densities of livestock in the world with 145 large ruminants per square kilometer. Dairy is the most important sector of livestock industry in Bangladesh that provides greater part of animal source protein for human consumption. Lifetime productivity of cows largely depends on their individual reproductive performance. In most countries, the primary objective of a reproductive control program in a dairy herd is to have each cow calve and produce a live calf in every 12 months. Like in many other countries, poor reproductive efficiency has been considered to be the major limiting factors in medium and large scale market oriented dairying in Bangladesh for achieving this goal. This book highlighted the overall reproductive efficiency in main milk pocket area of Bangladesh combining both traditional and recent measures of reproductive indexes.

Reproductive disorders adversely affect the reproductive effectiveness. Anoestrus, repeat breeding, cystic ovarian disorders have been observed as the most common reproductive problems in cattle. The present investigation was carried out in Bogra district of Bangladesh to evaluate the prevalence of reproductive diseases (RDs)in dairy cows. Out of 1500 cows, 770 clinical reproductive cases were registered from individual questionnaire in four upazilas under the district of Bogra. Genotypes of cows had significant effect (P<0.05) on most RDs. The prevalence of RDs were lower in <3 years age group except anestrus. Body weight had also significant effect (P<0.05) in all RDs. The prevalence of RDs association with body condition, educational qualification of owners of farm, farming experience, floor type had similar effects and the low incidence recorded were in poor body conditions, illiterate farmer, having no farming experience and earthen floor, respectively. Extensive housing system was lowest influences on various RDs of cows at Bogra district. It concluded that, the percentage of prevalence of RDs are higher which are hindering the development of dairy enterprises in Bangladesh.

Buffalo plays an important role in livestock economy over Asia. Among other livestock species the Buffalo is the second most versatile component in relation to existing integrated agricultural farming system in Bangladesh. Reproductive management of buffalo is a foremost concern because of inaccuracy to detect oestrus and pregnancy and all are associated with significant economic losses. Nowadays application of assisted reproductive technologies resembling milk progesterone ELISA, Ultrasonography is successfully improves our understanding on Buffalo Reproduction of Bangladesh. Milk progesterone ELISA was first introduced by Khan et al, (2008) in Bangladesh through Field Fertility Clinic Laboratory (FFC), Bangladesh Agricultural University. Recently milk progesterone ELISA is one of the regularly practiced techniques in Bangladesh to evaluate ovarian cyclicity, oestrus, pregnancy and non-pregnancy status of buffalo, which helps the farmers to maintain the profitable dairy farming.

Recent attention on the role of men in reproductive health warranted the need for becoming of responsible partners in relation to male-involvement initiatives. This study examined the role of men on some selected reproductive health issues. Logistic regression analysis suggests that approval of husband could be an important determinant whether or not a couple would use contraception. Qualitative analysis revealed that a complex web of socio-cultural factors impeded spousal communication regarding the reproductive health issues and discouraged them to take their wives to health facilities. The analysis demonstrates that male involvement in reproductive health is an important strategy to the reach demographic goals in Bangladesh. Men in Bangladesh suffer from misinformation and require factual information from relevant sources to promote and ensure men's participation in reproductive health services. The findings suggest that more pragmatic and target-oriented programmes are required to increase male involvement in reproductive health matters; this will hasten to achieve the demographic objectives of the country.

Today, in buffalo rearing countries, buffalo is recognizing as farmers milk machine. The reproductive performance of buffaloes is not good as compared to the cattle. There are many ways to improve the reproductive performance in buffaloes. The one is proper postpartum management and weaning of buffalo calves. Weaning not only improves the reproductive performance but also increases the milk production and milk yield. This book will help to the buffalo farmers and buffalo researchers how to wean the buffalo calves, period of weaning and alternative milk replacers to calves to increase the reproductive and productive performance in cost effective manner.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the corpus luteum on hormonal and biochemical metabolites composition of follicular fluid (FF) harvested from different sized follicles and their relationship to blood serum in dairy cows. Ovaries were recovered from 30 female adult cows (Holstein Friesian) 4–7 years of age with clinically normal reproductive tracts after slaughtering. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein before slaughter from each cow. The stage of the cycle in the cows slaughtered was diestrus determined post mortem. The ovaries collected per cow were classified with corpus luteum (CL+) and without corpus luteum (CL-). Visible follicles on the surface of the ovaries were classified, based on their diameter, into (i) small (3-5 mm), (ii) medium (6-9 mm) and (iii) large (10-20 mm) categories. Follicular fluid was aspirated from different sized follicles in CL+ and CL- ovaries. Serum and FF samples were analyzed for hormones (estradiol-17β, progesterone, testosterone, T3 and T4) and biochemical metabolites (glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein, albumin and globulin). Results showed that the FF concentration of estradiol-17β, progesterone

The book includes information based on a survey with farmers who had applied straw treatment with urea and fed to cattle in the Ethiopian highlands. Feeding urea treated straw increased milk production by 0.5 – 2 L/day and improved the body condition of the cattle. Farmers accepted the practice of straw treatment and were willing to continue. Most farmers realized that urea treated straw can replace hay in the dry and drought periods. However about half of the interviewed farmers failed to continue the practice. The low level of income, the misconception about the use of treated straw only in times of feed shortage and the expectation to be always supported by the government were the reasons for the failure. The book also contains an experimental result of urea treated straws on feeding lactating dairy cows. Urea treatment increased the nutrient content of teff and barley straw. It can replace hay in the diet of dairy cows. Feeding urea treated straws based diets enhanced the efficient utilization of crop residues and led to improved production performance of cattle. Farmers need efficient training, advice and follow up to introduce and adapt the technology of straw treatment.

The aim of this study was to define connections between heifer rearing intensity (average daily weight gain, age at first calving, body condition scores during the rearing phase) and production performance, fertility and longevity of dairy cows in the production period with regard to overall herd economics. A dairy herd is a complex system consisting of two interconnected parts - the milking herd and the replacement herd. Management decisions regarding replacement policy can have profound effects on the profitability of the farm as a whole. Although it is often pursued as a management target, low AFC does not always lead to the most profitable outcome in dairy herd management.

A considerable amount of evidence has accumulated in supporting the view that conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) and omega-3 fatty acids (FA) have beneficial health properties and that the consumption levels of these FA is insufficient in most western diets. In view of their benefits, there has been a considerable interest in enhancing milk and dairy food products with these beneficial FA. The objective of the first trial was to determine the effect of supplementing grazing dairy cows' diet with fish oil (FO) and linseed oil (LSO) on milk c9, t11 CLA and omega-3 FA. The objective of the second trail was to examine the temporal changes in milk c9, t11 CLA content of grazing dairy cows fed FO and LSO for an extended period of time. Results from the two trials show that supplementing grazing cows' diets with LSO and FO enhances milk c9, t11 CLA and omega-3 FA content and could be used as a practical approach to broaden dairy market by increasing their competitiveness in the U.S. healthy food market.

Beef cattle still possess important position in tropical countries. However, it has generally been accepted that heat detection in zebu cattle under tropical environment is not as obvious as that in temperate environment. Thus, heat detection is still a problem that may have effect on the reproductive performance in beef cattle. In order to improve the reproductive performance, advances in assisted reproductive biotechnology, genetic improvement, and improve in management should be incorporated to attain good calf crops. It is known that, stress due to handling may influence on the reproductive performance. On the other hand, less handling and gentle interaction with animal could improve the reproductive performance, which in return could increase the income of the farm. Therefore, the improved oestrus synchrony is related to greater pregnancy rates and hence improves the reproductive performance, which in return could increase the income of the farm. In addition, the welfare and kindness should be done for the improvement in the animal productivity.

The production performance of Arsi Holstein Friesian crossbred in this study was better as compared with that of pure Zebu breeds. However, the production and reproduction performance of Arsi-HF crossbred in this study was far below the expected genetic potential of animals in the tropical environment elsewhere. This may be attributed to poor feeding, housing health care and breeding management. In the current study, year had an important role in determining the performance of dairy cows indicating that the variation in feed availability and quality as well as variation in management through the years. Prolonged age at first services, age at first calving and calving intervals obtained from this study indicates problems associated with nutritional and management conditions during early growth period of the animals. On the other hand, the long days open may indicate poor heat detection, less supervision of animals, service irregularities.

This study aims to determine the impact of early marriage on the reproductive health status of the early married women in slum areas under Khulna City Corporation of Bangladesh. Simple random sampling technique was applied to collect data from the field. Data were collected from 150 respondents through surveys method using a structured interview schedule, in face-to-face situation. The findings of this study explicate that the majority of the women of study area, based on sample investigation, are not aware of the concept of early marriage and reproductive health. Data reveals that almost 32 percent respondents are illiterate. All the respondents were married before 18 years and they had little preference over the decision of marriage. Most of the respondents delivered their first child before 15 years old. Above, 50 percent respondents didn’t get any types of medical facility from the health personnel.

This book highlights intricately connected issues of socio-economic status and perception and practice of reproductive health rights (RHRs) of women living in rural areas of Bangladesh. The using data are the reflection of the real life representation of women in two villages under Dacope Upazila of Khulna District where the devastation of Natural disasters frequently affects their normal course of life and livelihood. In addition gender ideology and gender discrimination are deep rooted in these villages from time immemorial. Women are unevaluated or under evaluated regarding all sorts of decision making whether be it societal or familial. Gender norms in Bangladeshi society tend to make men macho and women passive. So women don't have right to take decisions even about their private life like sexual behavior and choice of reproductive health care. Though the universal declaration on reproductive health rights defined reproductive health rights are the rights for all people, regardless of age, gender and other characteristics, to make choices regarding their own sexuality and reproduction but the RHRs of women of these villages are dictated by the husbands or male members.

In recent years, the formation and impacts of biofilms on dairy manufacturing have been studied extensively, from the effects of microbial enzymes produced during transportation of raw milk to the mechanisms of biofilm formation by thermophilic spore-forming bacteria. The dairy industry now has a better understanding of biofilms and of approaches that may be adopted to reduce the impacts that biofilms have on manufacturing efficiencies and the quality of dairy products. Biofilms in the Dairy Industry provides a comprehensive overview of biofilm-related issues facing the dairy sector. The book is a cornerstone for a better understanding of the current science and of ways to reduce the occurrence of biofilms associated with dairy manufacturing. The introductory section covers the definition and basic concepts of biofilm formation and development, and provides an overview of problems caused by the occurrence of biofilms along the dairy manufacturing chain. The second section of the book focuses on specific biofilm-related issues, including the quality of raw milk influenced by biofilms, biofilm formation by thermoduric streptococci and thermophilic spore-forming bacteria in dairy manufacturing plants, the presence of pathogens in biofilms, and biofilms associated with dairy waste effluent. The final section of the book looks at the application of modelling approaches to control biofilms. Potential solutions for reducing contamination throughout the dairy manufacturing chain are also presented. Essential to professionals in the global dairy sector, Biofilms in the Dairy Industry will be of great interest to anyone in the food and beverage, academic and government sectors. This text is specifically targeted at dairy professionals who aim to improve the quality and consistency of dairy products and improve the efficiency of dairy product manufacture through optimizing the use of dairy manufacturing plant and reducing operating costs.

An ideal oestrous synchrony regimen results in synchronous oestrous onset irrespective of reproductive status or stage of oestrous cycle at initiation of treatment without adversely affecting pregnancy rates after breeding. However following a synchronisation regimen, variation in onset of oestrus may occur. This variation is dependent on timing of (CL) regression, stage of follicular growth and when present the duration of dominance of the ovulatory follicle. Many different treatment regimens may be used to attempt to synchronise oestrus. These include the use of a luteolytic agent prostaglandin-F 2α (PGF2α) alone or in combination with an agent to regulate ovarian follicular development. Alternative regimens involve the use of P4 or progestagen-based treatments used in combination with a luteolytic agent and or an agent to regulate follicle waves. Combining progestin treatments with protocols similar to Ovsynch show improved conception rates in first-lactation cows treated with (CIDR) inserts during an Ovsynch protocol.

The household dairy intervention program has been introduced since 2003 as one of the major components of dairy development strategies in Tigray. This program focuses on household income oriented dairy development and other agricultural extension activities to improve household income. Dairy producers had little awareness about the economic importance of component information for within-herd management as well as profitability of the dairy farm. However, critical gaps have been observed on the performance of the packages in earning an improved income and product. Therefore, this book provides information on the possible impacts of the dairy development intervention packages on management, production, utilization and income. In addition, it would help in providing feedback to the stakeholders as to what extent the designed dairy intervention packages of the program were geared towards solving the beneficiary's problem as well as on the remedial measures needed to take corrections on the problems confirmed during the implementation of the program.

As customer loyalty is always shifting to the service provider whose service is comparatively better, customer satisfaction is a crucial issue to survive in this market. Companies like Grameenphone, Robi, and Airtel have been trying to achieve their goal of increasing customer satisfaction by using performance recognition techniques on their employees. This is due to the fact that only the employees of a company are in a position to improve the customer satisfaction level, since they are in direct or indirect contact with customers. This report will therefore focus on the impact of employee recognition techniques on customer satisfaction in the telecommunication sector of Bangladesh. The report has been divided into two parts. The first part will contain the literature review and the conceptual frame of the study. In the second part, the very crucial part of methodology will be examined. The survey finally will include 30 respondents from whom primary data will be collected. The researcher has also decided to use the convenience sampling method for fulfilling the purpose of this research.

Although bioactive compounds in milk and dairy products have been extensively studied during the last few decades – especially in human and bovine milks and some dairy products – very few publications on this topic are available, especially in other dairy species’ milk and their processed dairy products. Also, little is available in the areas of bioactive and nutraceutical compounds in bovine and human milks, while books on other mammalian species are non-existent. Bioactive Components in Milk and Dairy Products extensively covers the bioactive components in milk and dairy products of many dairy species, including cows, goats, buffalo, sheep, horse, camel, and other minor species. Park has assembled a group of internationally reputed scientists in the forefront of functional milk and dairy products, food science and technology as contributors to this unique book. Coverage for each of the various dairy species includes: bioactive proteins and peptides; bioactive lipid components; oligosaccharides; growth factors; and other minor bioactive compounds, such as minerals, vitamins, hormones and nucleotides, etc. Bioactive components are discussed for manufactured dairy products, such as caseins, caseinates, and cheeses; yogurt products; koumiss and kefir; and whey products. Aimed at food scientists, food technologists, dairy manufacturers, nutritionists, nutraceutical and functional foods specialists, allergy specialists, biotechnologists, medical and health professionals, and upper level students and faculty in dairy and food sciences and nutrition, Bioactive Components in Milk and Dairy Products is an important resource for those who are seeking nutritional, health, and therapeutic values or product technology information on milk and dairy products from the dairy cow and speciesbeyond. Areas featured are: Unique coverage of bioactive compounds in milks of the dairy cow and minor species, including goat, sheep, buffalo, camel, and mare Identifies bioactive components and their analytical isolation methods in manufactured dairy products, such as caseins, caseinates, and cheeses; yogurt products; koumiss and kefir; and whey products Essential for professionals as well as biotechnology researchers specializing in functional foods, nutraceuticals, probiotics, and prebiotics Contributed chapters from a team of world-renowned expert scientists
