The present work was aimed to evaluate the effects of graded levels of lignite flyash (LFA) application in groundnut. The results of the field experiment revealed that among the various graded levels of LFA evaluated, the treatment combined application of LFA @ 10 t ha-1 + pressmud @ 12 5 t ha-1 + RDF (T7) was highly suitable in terms of their ideal physico-chemical characteristics, the magnitude of nutrient contents and their availability to groundnut and it was found to improve the growth, yield attributes, pod and haulm yield and oil content of groundnut for both the seasons. Addition of LFA @ 10 t ha-1 + Pressmud @ 12.5 t ha-1 + RDF recorded the highest plant height of 30.60, 40.20 and 51.60 cm at 30, 60 and at harvest during Rabi and it was significantly superior to that of addition of LFA @ 5 t ha-1 + Pressmud @ 12.5 t ha-1 + RDF. The same trend was followed in summer also. Combined application of LFA with pressmud or FYM greatly influenced the yield and yield parameters for Rabi and summer seasons rather than sole application of LFA in groundnut.

Mung bean (Vigna radiata L. wilezek) is an important food legume which belongs to the family, Fabaceae (Leguminaceae) and sub family Papilionaceae is extensively grown in humid to arid and semi-arid regions. The ability of Rhizobium bacteria to fix nitrogen from the air (N2) in symbiosis with legumes, huge natural source of nitrogen from the air can be taken up from this symbiotic association. This ability leads to decrease or absence of nitrogen mineral fertilizer application in the field. Therefore, there is need to explore the potential of rhizobia as legume inoculants under agro climatic conditions. Foliar application of NAA is able to control flower drop and improve the flower and fruit setting, nodulation, number of pods per plant, seed yield and harvest index in mungbean with the inoculation of Rhizobium along with NPK application. Inspite of growth regulators spray of certain chemical like potassium nitrate has been reported to play significant role in sources-sink relationship and ultimately increase the harvest index.

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) also known as peanut and earthnut, is an important oilseed crop largely grown by resource poor smallholder farmers under rainfed conditions. These farmers employ different tillage practices in the production of the crop. Many farmers perform tillage operations without being aware of the effect of these operations on soil physical properties and crop responses. It is carried out mainly to loosen the upper layer of soil, to mix the soil with fertilizer and organic residues, to control weeds, and to create a suitable seedbed for germination and plant growth. The theme of nutrient management in integrated way for increasing the soil fertility is gaining ground throughout the world in recent years due to high cost of fertilizer and reduced availability of organic manures. Modern tillage and integrated nutrient management practices may affect soil fertility and productivity of groundnut due to different soil conditions created and fulfills the nutrient requirement of crop. The book contains the information on the effect of tillage and integrated nutrient management practices on soil fertility and productivity of groundnut under rainfed conditions.

Taro (Colocasia esculenta L.) is one of the major staple root crops in different countries of the world. However, the yield potential is seldom realized, and among the yield limiting factors, soil fertility is one of the major factor affecting the yield of the crop. Thus, this book gives research result on 'Response Taro to Applied N and K Fertilizer Levels. Two types of fertilizers at different levels, i.e. K (0, 75, 150 and 225 kg ha-1) and N (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1), were combined in factorial for the experimental study. The response of taro to N and K levels was assessed by examining growth and yield parameters. The result revealed that K had no significant effect on the growth and yield of taro, except for the corm dry weight. But N had significantly affected both the growth and yield of taro. The maximum yield (60.96 t ha-1) was obtained by application of 150 kg N ha-1. Economic analysis showed that the highest net benefit was obtained in treatment combination of 75 kg K ha-1 with 150 kg N ha-1. However, the marginal rate of return analysis was optimum when 100 kg N ha-1 was applied. Thus, 100 kg N ha-1 was found optimum for taro production based on this experiment.

Usman Monday Tillage Practices and Fertilizer Rates in Maize-Soybean Intercrop

A two year experiment was conducted at the Teaching & Research Farm, University of Agriculture, Makurdi to determine the effect of tillage practices & fertilizer rates on Maize-Soybean Intercrop. The experimental design consisted of three factors: cropping system at two levels (sole and intercrops), tillage practices at two levels (zero tillage and ridges) and fertilizer rates at three levels (0, 150 and 300 kg/ha of NPK 20:10:10). The treatments were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in a split-split plot arrangement and replicated three times. The cropping systems were assigned to the main plots, tillage practices to sub-plots and the fertilizer rates were in the sub-sub plots. Results showed that Intercropping reduced the yields of both crops compared with their sole crops. There were higher yields from crops cultivated on ridges as a result of improved access to soil moisture than no-tillage. Applying fertilizer significantly (P<0.05) increased the yield of the component crops than when no fertilizer was applied. Intercropping resulted in yield advantage. Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) was (1.53) in 2013 and (1.35) in 2014 showing 35 % and 26 % land saved.

A study was conducted to determine the effect of 'Push-pull' (intercropping maize with Desmodium and Napier grass) strategy management and nitrogen application on maize grain yield and soil fertility on smallholder farmer's fields in three districts of central Kenya highlands. The experiment design was a split plot design with two factors ('Push-pull' vs monoculture and manure (5 t/ha) only vs manure and fertilizer (40 kg/ha) replicated four times.I found an increase in maize yield in 'Push-pull' fields compared with monocultures with only manure added (5t/ha) and the yield increased even more with modest application of fertilizer (40KgN/ha) combined with manure (5t/ha).There was strong significant difference (p<0.001) on maize grain yield between 'Push-pull' (5.52t/ha) and monoculture (1.93t/ha) cropping systems in the three districts of central Kenya. From management perspective, the different fertilization regimes had strongest positive effect on maize yield in well managed 'Push-pull' cropping systems.

Water is life; this truth is not lost on these creatures. Some species of termites have evolved to such a level that they have the abilities to forage over unusual long distances and partially control their own dwelling environments, through the construction of nests structures in such a way that humidity and temperature does not vary all seasons. Bulto Teshome Daba Soil Chemical Fertility in Relation to Land Use and Landscape Position

Now a day the soil fertility of high land areas, where most of the agricultural activities have been done at the escarpments of the landscape, has been decreased. These in turn decrease the productivity of land because of the removal of soil and nutrient by erosion. Therefore the use of fertilizer has increased to compensate the removed nutrients through erosion. The change in land use is also another factor to increase or decrease the fertility of the land. The application of the same fertilizer rate at each landscape position lead us wastage or inefficient. This book, therefore, provides the variability of soil chemical fertility among different land use and landscape position, as well as soil deterioration indices. The analysis help some light on this variability, and especially useful to professionals like researchers, agriculture experts and instructors etc working in areas of soil fertility and decision makers who may use fertilizer in the high land areas or any else.

J. M. Ayuba Ombatse. An Invention of Tradition and Understanding Communal Conflicts in Nasarawa State, Nigeria

This book is about the emergence of ombatse, an Eggon ethnic militia in central Nigeria. Ombatse has become an invention by some Eggon people in response to their 'bleak' suffering or 'marginalised' situation in an attempt to effect their 'liberation'. It was initially formed as a political movement but after the outbreak of communal conflict in 2012, it was transformed into an ethnic militia. Ombatse has now become a non-state collective actor that organises violence and the group have been able to overcome the many challenges they have faced, especially raising funds, recruiting members and ensuring that members remain committed.

This is strictly an examination of the effect of non-oil export on economic growth of Nigeria. The basic aim is to examine the trend and composition of the non-oil export in Nigeria and investigate the extent of the contribution of non-oil export sector to the Nigerian economy. The study generate serious academic interest in evolving new methods and strategies needed in developing non-oil exports for higher productivity and efficient performance which in the long run will result to economic growth and development. Hence it evaluates the federal government incentives and schemes in promoting non-oil export trade promotion in Nigeria with focus on the immense derivable benefits from engaging in non-oil export and the resulting economic growth in Nigeria at aggregate level which are associated with the current international trends in global trade liberation. Virtually all the nations' foreign exchange was obtained from the exportation of oil products due to the economic boom in 1970s. Thus, it is pertinent in this study to discuss the causes and consequences of the neglect of the non-oil export in detail as well as trend examined since 1970 in order to note its growth.

Edet Lawrence The Paradox of Economic Growth without Development in Nigeria

This academic piece is a humble and diligent contributions aimed at assessing the level of economic development in Nigeria, compared to its rapid and appreciable economic growth. Nigeria is undoubtedly, the Africa's largest economy and one of the fastest growing economies in the world. But the level of rise in the discomfort variables and other misery indices calls to question the much appreciable growth in the economy without development. The work is arranged in 4(four) chapters. Chapter one introduces the work, summarize the statement of the study problem, study objectives, study research questions and study methodology. Chapter two deals with conceptual review of related variables and examination of the paradox of economic growth without development in Nigeria. Chapter three further handles the reasons for the paradox of Nigeria's economic growth and chapter four is dedicated to the way forward with summarized recommendations and conclusion. We therefore believe strongly that this humble contributions to academic literature will be greatly appreciated by students, policy makers and the reading public. I have to end by saying that "Nigeria is too rich to be poor".

Intercropping is experienced by preponderance of farmers in many regions of the world. Intercropping has since long been used as mean to cover the risk of failure of base crop and it can pilot to boost food supply without retreating the sustainability of soil. This system of cropping suppresses weeds, reduces pest disease infestation, gives yield advantage and there is stable yield over time. Crop fertilizer needs can be met with the addition of an organic fertilizer, which is suitable for enhancing crop yields on sustained basis and cost effective too. The use of legumes as an intercrop can serve a potential source of organic fertilizer. It can be used as a supplement source of nutrition especially that of nitrogen. It is an economical way of food production as one input such as N from legume can be applied once and used by all the crop components in the farm thereby saving time for the farmer. Thus present project will be helpful to farmers in order to augment the crop yield and sustain the soil fertility, identify an effective and low cost fertilizer level technique for maize and substitute N-fertilizer with leguminous crops as an organic source.

Das Sanjib Kumar Response of Sulphur . Phosphorus in Greengram - Rice cropping system

Soil health has become a cause of concern for sustainable agricultural production in the new millennium. Use of high analysis fertilizers, heavy sulphur removal by the crops under intensive cultivation & neglect of S replenishment contributed to widespread S deficiencies. Sulphur deficiencies have been reported from 72 countries in the world. Sulphur has a great role in N-fixation by influencing active nodulation in legume & despite the relatively low S requirement of rice , the productivity of these staple food grains may drastically be reduced by an inadequate supply of S. Sulphur has the ability to benefit more than one crop in sequence due to it's significant residual response. Application of higher dose of phosphorus (60 kg P205 /ha ) and increasing levels of sulphur up to 40 kg S/ha proved to be the best in improving the growth, yield attributing characters, grain yield of green gram. Varying levels of residual fertility and basal dose of nitrogen application significantly improved the rice yield and yield attributes. The research data of this book makes it useful reference for researchers, under graduate and post graduate students of agriculture and farming community.

On February 10, 1971 a historical stage was set between China and Nigeria, one of not only bilateral relations but of mutual respect for each other. Although this relationship dates back to more than three decades, recent developments call for a careful and detailed analysis of this union and to this end, i seek to provide analysis of the relationship with respect to investment, trade, aid, and economic cooperation. Recent developments in China and Nigeria relationship are not unconnected with the renewed ties between the two giants as Nigeria has become one of China's most important trading partners in Africa. The contemporary waves of diplomatic relations appear to a reasonable extent mutually beneficial. Nigeria's quest for development with an aggressive campaign for FDI as one of the motivating forces has opened the economy which China is seen as an ideal business partner. Accordingly, this paper, through a critical review of the literature examines, and evaluates the opportunities and challenges abound in the nascent economic and trade relationships, and discusses the prospects of the deals for the Chinese, Nigerian, and African socio-economic growth.Ke...

Onyejelam Emem The role of Law in promoting renewable energy development in Nigeria

The energy crisis in Nigeria is such that has brought about development setbacks, environmental degradation, increased poverty rate, etc and these must be addressed to bring about socio-economic development. The key to improving energy access lies in the ability of the government to include renewable energy sources like solar, wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass, as part of the nation's energy mix. However, the government can only achieve this feat where private investors (domestic and foreign) are actively involved. The Renewable energy industry in Nigeria is driven by Policies and most recently, the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy, 2015. Policies in Nigeria have been criticised for lacking in implementation, consistency, stability and lacking binding effects. These factors send the wrong signals to potential investors who need to be assured of security over investments made. Thus, it is therfore pertinent to have a legislation on renewable energy that would complement already existing policies and guarantee justice in event of a breach. The law can create an enabling environment for potential investors to drive renewable energy development in Nigeria.

Chudi Offodile The Politics of Biafra. And the Future of Nigeria

The Politics of Biafra is a reflection on the importance of history in addressing present realities and the future co-existence of Nigeria's multi ethnic society. It analyzes the ideological struggles and conflict in Biafra during the war with Nigeria from 1967-1970, the impact of the war and the relevance of those struggles to the current agitations for a new state of Biafra. In this historical and analytical work, the author observes that nearly fifty years after the end of the Nigeria-Biafra war in 1970, Nigeria remains confronted with the Biafra dilemma. No matter its pretensions, Nigeria will at some point have to reform its present pseudo federal arrangement to create a more inclusive, equitable and proper federal structure. If not, the country will continue to face epileptic developmental thrusts, militancy in the Niger Delta and a ruinous intensifying clamor for self-determination by disadvantaged ethnic groups, especially the Igbo.Appendix - Three part essay by Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

Adolphus Washington Greely Report on the Climate of Arizona. With Particular Reference to Questions of Irrigation and Water Storage in the Arid Region (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Report on the Climate of Arizona: With Particular Reference to Questions of Irrigation and Water Storage in the Arid RegionIn this connection it seems also important to consider the absolute humidity conditions over the arid region, that is, the actual quantity of aqueous vapor contained in each cubic foot of air at or near the surface of the earth. On charts Nos. 2 and 3 are shown typical curves with reference to the absolute humidity of the air, which is expressed in the number of grains of water in each cubic foot of air. In preparing these charts it has been necessary to ignore State lines, as the distribution of moisture and damp air depends so very largely not only on the contiguity to the ocean, but also on the direction of the prevailing winds and the character of the intervening country over which the wind must pass from the source of water supply. Consequently these typical curves have been drawn for the Pacific coast region, the interior of California, and for Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. The important hearing which the prevalence of moisture or dry air has upon growing vegetation is well known, but further than this it has an equally important bearing upon the methods of irrigation, since the drier the air the greater the quantity of stored or flowing water which will be evaporated thereby. As will be noted by reference to these charts, the greatest quantity of water is not found in the same month over all parts of the arid region.In...

Fresh water resources especially ground water are getting scarce at a rapid pace in arid and semi-arid countries like Pakistan, due to drastically increased gap between renewable supply and demand. This study assesses the appropriateness of different aspects of rooftop rainwater harvesting system as an alternative of ground water installed at Chitra Topi, a mountainous area in district Bagh, where annual rainfall measures up to 1600mm. Various implementation modes of this practice, design and potential of RRWHS and finally assessment of the water quality of rainwater from households was carried out and analyzed throughout different periods. In village Chitra Topi, mostly women and children fetch few liters of water in small containers from distant springs to meet all domestic needs every day. Based on results, it is concluded that rainwater harvesting systems were shown to be a relatively low cost option for improving a households' geographical and temporal access to a water source, increasing convenience and decreasing collection times.

It suggests inter alia that corruption and insufficient public participation are some of the major obstacles to the implementation of the sustainable development objectives of Agenda 21 in Nigeria. To enhance the realization of the objectives of Agenda 21 in Nigeria, the author recommends inter alia the establishment of a constitutional right to sustainable development alongside inter generational rights and the recognition of the public trust doctrine as well as the adoption of budget analysis. This work will be useful to Students of development law.It will also be of interest to any person interested in learning about the implementation of sustainable development in Nigeria.

Modelling of Engineering Materials presents the background that is necessary to understand the mathematical models that govern the mechanical response of engineering materials. The book provides the basics of continuum mechanics and helps the reader to use them to understand the development of nonlinear material response of solids and fluids used in engineering applications. A brief review of simplistic and linear models used to characterize the mechanical response of materials is presented. This is followed by a description of models that characterize the nonlinear response of solids and fluids from first principles. Emphasis is given to popular models that characterize the nonlinear response of materials. The book also presents case studies of materials, where a comprehensive discussion of material characterization, experimental techniques and constitutive model development, is presented. Common principles that govern material response of both solids and fluids within a unified framework are outlined. Mechanical response in the presence of non-mechanical fields such as thermal and electrical fields applied to special materials such as shape memory materials and piezoelectric materials is also explained within the same framework.

Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

This volume of essays on public policy challenges in the Buhari-led Nigeria is a child of necessity. In 2015 and sixteen years after the PDP assumed the leadership reins in Nigeria, it was evident to all, that Nigeria was not enjoying the best form of governance and purposeful leadership. The strength of government was absolutely lacking. Enter 2015 and the grand alliance and vision of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which claimed to be the only credible alternative capable of upending the PDP and providing Nigeria the much leadership change it desired. Hope about Nigeria's prospects soared with the election of President Muhammadu Buhari. The hope was well founded: it reflected the high expectations generated both by the smooth transfer of power from the Jonathan administration, itself a sign of a maturing democracy, and by the scintillating campaign by candidate Buhari. It did not take long before the Buhari administration confronted the political reality of governance. The governance reality that the Buhari administration faced on assuming the reins of power consisted of his own campaign promises (tackling insecurity, combating corruption, and growing the economy -- with emphasis on reducing unemployment and diversifying the economy); unanticipated crises (resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta and onset of recession); and self-inflicted injuries (delayed appointment of his cabinet, policy somersaults on foreign exchange policy, and poor management of the reces...

For over one decade the Govt of Nigeria has spent huge sums of money in hydrocarbon exploration of the Nigerian sector of the Chad Basin without success, as no oil or gas discovery has been made in the region. Meanwhile, most researchers and scholars on petroleum potentials in Nigeria have concentrated mostly in the southern basins while little geophysical work has been carried out in the Chad Basin. The book utilizes the Well log data from 23 oil wells in Chad Basin Nigeria to analyze the basin prospect to generate liquid or gas hydrocarbon. The geothermal gradient map of the basin was constructed from bottom hole temperature data. The heat flow values of the various stratigraphic units were then evaluated. Average geothermal gradient of 3.4 oC/100 m within the range of 3.0 to 4.4 oC/100 m was obtained. The oil-generating zone in the basin is expected to occur within the depth range of 1273 m and 4100 m while the average depth to oil floor for the basin is 3626 m. Mean heat flow vary from 63.6 to 105.6 mWm-2, with an average of 80.6 mWm-2. The result serves as a learning guide for students and researchers in the academic and oil industry.

Roberto Cui Oil Multinationals in Nigeria. Human Rights, Sustainable Development and the Law

Decades of irresponsible oil exploitation in the Niger Delta have caused a water and air pollution which does not have many comparisons anywhere else. In an already fragile country as Nigeria, characterised by weak democratic institutions and poor economic governance, this situation has led to increasing discontent and violence towards both the government and the oil multinationals. These two actors co-operate for the maximisation of oil profits and revenues while, at the same time, excluding local host communities from the participation in the oil development projects, preventing them from achieving a sustainable development, violating their human rights, and compromising their livelihoods. This book analyses the legal framework of Nigeria in the oil sector and the peculiarities of the country in order to provide a critical overview of the issues, demonstrating that the amendment of the domestic Acts dealing with the topic, as well as the remediation to the damages caused by oil multinationals, are no longer deferrable. The final aim is to suggest a pattern to sustainable oil development which, by means of applying the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility, would help to quell the conflict, to improve the local people's standards of life, and to make Nigeria emerge as a socio-environmentally responsible African resource-rich country.
