This book compiles three dissertations on experimental projects based on pollution hazards due to electric field on the germination of seeds. The sprout length of gram and pea seeds during the time of germination of some seeds in open-air condition decreases with increase in electric field and voltage. Corresponding graphs show non-linear variations. The cut-off or threshold voltage at which germination stops, is also determined by extrapolation and the corresponding electric field is computed. Thus electric field has negative effect on the germination of seeds. This may have an impact in agriculture sector, specifically, in the process of preservation of seeds in cold storages.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 3.17, University of Hawassa (Awassa College of Agriculture), course: Horticulture, language: English, abstract: Plant density and bulb size trial was conducted at Ziway in order to identify the optimum agronomic management practices, which contribute to maximized seed production in onion crop both in terms of quantity and quality. The experiment was laid down in split plot design with three replications, keeping plant density as main plot factor and bulb size as sub plot factor. The effects were studied by collecting data on bulb sprouting and plant performance, yield components, seed yield and seed quality parameters. Analyses of variance, mean comparison using least significant difference, correlation analysis were made using SAS computer software. Plant density significantly influenced bulb sprouting, umbel size, seed yield per 100m2and germination percentage. The largest umbel size (4.9cm) was obtained from low plant density; where as the smallest (4.4cm) from high plant density. Maximum seed yield per 100m2(1,163,446 seeds) was collected from high density while low density yielded only 416,240 seeds per 100m2. However the quality of seed in terms of germination was highest for seeds obtained from low density. The optimum level of ABA is maintained by the balance between biosynthesis and catabolism. ABA catabolism is mainly carried out by 8'-hydroxylation pathway in plants. In Arabidopsis, a Cytochrome P450 family namely CYP707A was found to be involved in the process of ABA catabolism and the present study was conducted to identify the members of CYP707A family in rice and the candidate P450 involved in ABA accumulation in developing seeds. Pattern of ABA accumulation was studied and it reaches maximum at 25 DAF. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that the expression pattern of the rice homolog OsCYP707A5 is closely associated with ABA levels in the maturing rice seeds

Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Agrarian Studies, , language: English, abstract: Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is commonly grown in home gardens of tropical and sub-tropical countries. The fruit contains high levels of carbohydrates, protein, starch, calcium and vitamins. The Artocarpus heterophyllus is believed indigenous to the Western Ghats of India. It is adapted only to the humid tropical and near tropical climate. The tree flourishes in rich deep soil of medium or open texture, sometimes on deep gravelly or laterite soil. In India they say that the tree grows tall and thin on sand, short thick on sandy land. Here the physical and chemical properties of soil from surrounding plots of different varieties of Arthocarpus heterophyllus have been analysed by using different technical methods and evaluating the effects of soil property on jackfruit nutritional quality. It was observed that there was a considerable difference in case of some minerals likes phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, zinc and manganese. Change in the soil pH also noticed. The pH also plays a major role in the sweetness of the jackfruit. The optimum pH of the amylase inside the jackfruit was found to be 6.2 to 6.8. The result shows that the soils that have higher pH have more sweet flakes. The emergence, establishment and growth of tree seedlings face very heterogeneous situations in tropical dry forests (TDFs). The pronounced seasonality in soil moisture availability affects the patterns of seed production, germination, survival and seedling development in plants. Light conditions vary seasonally in understorey of these forests, thereby affecting the growth of species components growing there. The patchy distribution and pulsation of nutrient release in the nutrient poor soils of these forests further restricts the growth of plants spatially and temporally. The plants in TDFs, therefore, exhibit a variation in life- history characteristics, which in combination modulate the response of species to these environmental drivers. Furthermore, interactions among these environmental drivers are a regular feature of natural ecosystems, and have a great significance in shaping of the community structure and dynamics. The book explores the response of TDF tree seedlings to the combined effect of resources i.e. light, water and nutrient. The findings will augment understanding of the researchers in plant ecology especially working in tropical dry forests.

Jack fruit has diverse medicinal uses, especially anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-cancer and anti-fungal activity. Jackfruit is considered to be an underutilized fruit where most of the fruits get wasted due to ignorance, lack of post harvest technology and gaps in supply chain systems. Jackfruit contains more protein, calcium, iron, vitamins and other essential nutrients as compared to the common fruits. To find out the morphological variation among jack fruits among Kerala we conducted an elaborative survey and found out the parameters such as tree characteristics, leaf characterises or fruit characteristics of selected samples. Both qualitative and quantitative data are measured using field visits and standard methods and morphological indicators; after analysis of data there is a morphological variation among the jack fruit samples identified. The present study was undertaken; to evaluate the response of recurrent selection derived lines by the testing of (C3) derived lines for genetic variability, genetic advance and heritability and to assess the effect of selection on other quantitative traits. The 16 half-sib families were selected from 3rd cycle of recurrent selection were grown for evaluation in randomized block design in rabi 2009 -10 along with check varieties Bhima and A1. The expected genetic advance expressed as per cent of population mean at 10 per cent was high for seed yield per plot (48.44) followed by seed yield per plant (28.88). The expected genetic advance per cent over Bhima at 10 per cent selection intensity was high for seed yield per plot (28.27) followed by seed yield per plant (22.78). In safflower seed yield per plant was positively and significantly correlated with days to maturity, number of capitula per plant, number of seeds per capitulum and 100 seed weight. The Bt (Bacillus Thuringiensis) cotton seed production focussed on the socio-economic characteristics of contract farmers, cost and return, efficiency of resource use and problems faced by the farmers in Bt cotton seed production under different companies. The total cost of Bt cotton seed production varied from one company contract farmers to other company contract farmers. The Cobb-Douglas production function revealed that the farmers who have contracted with different seed companies, the use of seed was found to be optimum across all company contract farmers. Whereas, fertilizer resource was over utilized by farmers who have contracted with various companies. Non availability of trained labour and prevalence of high wage rate were the major constraints in case of production, where as poor technical assistance and low contract price were the contractual problems. Therefore the Bt cotton seed production technology had positive impact on Socio- economic status of farmers by increase in yield and reducing cost on inputs thereby increase in income and also standard of living.

Present research work embodies the different methods of Jatropha propagation by using seed germination, stem cutting and tissue culture methods. The extracts of leaf, stem and roots of Jatropha curcas L. were screened in order to study their effects on plant pathogenic fungi, plant pathogenic bacteria and human pathogenic bacteria. Interestingly antibacterial and antifungal nature of plant extracts have been noted. Regarding biochemical analysis of Jatropha species, the studies have made in the part second of the research work and the results are found to be useful in order to record the presence of certain bioactive chemicals in the plants. In order to achieve a mutant ideal plant the studies were carried out by using different mutagenic agents where results showed that certain mutagens are found to be helpful to achieve early flowering and fruiting in Jatropha curcas L.

The transient response of the voltage on the secondary is investigated with following changes in the model. Two instants of switching are considered. Instrument transformers are the integral components of power systems .Capacitive Voltage Transformers (CVTs) are widely used for protection, metering and control applications. The work presents the modeling of CVT by its equivalent circuit. A 420kV CVT is considered with a line to ground fault on the primary side. Another kind of transient response called ferro resonance is also studied. Three types of ferro resonance suppression circuits (FSCs) are considered to dampen the behavior due to ferro resonance The parameters of these FSCs are discussed. The impedance, power characteristics of these FSCs with variation of frequency are studied. Furthermore, using metal oxide varistors are used to improve the performance of the FSCs.The two switching instants in presence of FSC are also evaluated .The effect of FSCs on the transient response of CVTs are presented in this work. The effect of magnetizing current of intermediate voltage transformer on the transient response is also simulated.

To compete favourably in this new global seed world, quality and cost are and will certainly continue to be the key issues. The presence of counterfeit seed in Uganda seed market has been reported. Studies need to be conducted to investigate at which level along the seed value chain the deterioration in quality occurs. The current study assessed the change in quality of hybrid maize seed as it is transferred from seed companies (when seed has been processed and packaged) to agro-dealers. Specific objectives of the study were to determine the levels of phenotypic and genotypic variation in hybrid maize seed from seed companies and agro-dealers. A total of 120 samples of four hybrid maize varieties (improved varieties most favored by farmers) used in this study were collected from agro-dealers in 15 districts and from 3 seed companies. Alpha lattice design with two replications has been used. Data was collected on 33 morphological traits and all the 120 samples were genotyped using 128 SNP markers.The genetic distance analysis showed that agro-dealers' samples from Iganga, Masindi, Luwero, Soroti and Bukedea had high seed quality (genetically and phenotypically pure and similar to the seed companie...

Shorttitle:A pot culture experiment was conducted in the glasshouse at Holetta Agricultural Research Centre, Ethiopia. The aim of the trail was to study the impact of Cr on seed germination and growth of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Millittia ferruginea, and Ricinus communis and to see storage of metal use of phytoremediation. Cr2 (SO4)3.6H2O and (K2Cr2O7) at four concentration levels (0, 10,100, 1000 ppm) were used as treatment. The growing media was prepared by mixing 3 forest soil, 3 local soil, 1 manure, and 1 sand . Before sowing, the media were filled into polythene bags and pots were laidout in completely randomized design with three replications, germination was not significantly different for the two Cr species however it was differing significantly for different concentration of Cr and tree species. However, height and root collar diameter were significantly differed for the treatments at (P≤0.05). For Cr extraction plant parts were separately collected, oven dried, milled, and digested read using AAS. The shoots and roots of Ricinus communis showed a good Cr storage capacity followed by Millittia ferruginea and Eucalyptus camaldulensis.

The fruit provide two MJ per kg/wet weight of ripe perianth and contain high levels of carbohydrates, protein, starch, calcium and vitamins. Jackfruit has diverse medicinal uses especially for anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-cancer and anti-fungal activity. MatK (maturase K) genes are fast evolving, highly variant regions of plant chloroplast DNA that can serve as potential biomarkers for DNA coding and also in generating primers for plants with identification of unique motif regions. Advances in the genetic markers such as RFLP and PCR based methods are more reliable for identification of genetic diversity than morphological markers, although each technique has advantages and limitations. The objective of this research work was to estimate the level of genetic diversity and to assess genetic relationships among six varieties of jackfruit using 'matK gene' based on PCR technique and RFLP markers. The partial sequence of the 'matK' gene of six different Artocarpus varities was used in the analysis. The size of amplified products was approximately 700 bp. A complex drop-mass apparatus is used to conduct experiments and investigations on the impact dynamic behavior of RC slabsThe focus was on the response stage of the linear elastic field and how to correlate this re-sponse stage to the drop-height depending on raw experimental data.A process of data analysis for hundreds, thousands, or millions of data measurements has been carried out and an analytical model based on a system of single degree of freedom and different simplifications is shown with different verification methods. The model enables predicting bending response due to impact.The test of 11 slabs with drop-heights (1 to 4 meters) provides the required data to calibrate the analytical model as well as future numerical models.

ZmHda1 has been purified to homogeneity and found to be a 48 kDa monomeric protein (Brosch et al., 1996a). However, ZmHda1 specific antibodies can detect two other protein bands of molecular sizes of 84 and 65 kDa on immunoblots indicating that ZmHda1 exists natively in different molecular forms. These two protein forms of ZmHda1 are found in protein complexes of high molecular weights and they are enzymatically inactive (Pipal et al., 2003). Attempts to identify the protein components of the ZmHda1 protein complexes have been made. The second part of this study showed that histone methylation profile in maize embryos quantitatively and qualitatively changes as the germination progresses from 0 to 72 h. The total and chromatin unbound HMT activity decrease during the germination progress, while the chromatin bound HMT activity increases. This increase was most remarkable as an increase in methylation of H4K20 residue and to a lesser extent in mono- and tri- methylated H3K9 and dimethylated H3K36. For Mimusops zeyheri and Syzygium legatii effects of shade and seed size on germination and seedling recruitment have been investigated in plant pot experiments. Two field experiments were conducted investigating seed predation and the effect of competition. Taro (Colocasia esculenta L.) is one of the major staple root crops in different countries of the world.However, the yield potential is seldom realized, and among the yield limiting factors, soil fertility is one of the major factor affecting the yield of the crop. Thus, this book gives research result on 'Response Taro to Applied N and K Fertilizer Levels. Two types of fertilizers at different levels, i.e. K (0, 75, 150 and 225 kg ha-1) and N (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1), were combined in factorial for the experimental study. The response of taro to N and K levels was assessed by examining growth and yield parameters. The result revealed that K had no significant effect on the growth and yield of taro, except for the corm dry weight. But N had significantly affected both the growth and yield of taro. The maximum yield (60.96 t ha-1) was obtained by application of 150 kg N ha-1. Economic analysis showed that the highest net benefit was obtained in treatment combination of 75 kg K ha-1 with 150 kg N ha-1. However, the marginal rate of return analysis was optimum when 100 kg N ha-1 was applied. Thus, 100 kg N ha-1 was found optimum for taro production based on this experiment.

Emergency health care systems are of increasing concern in international healthcare developments and the global fight against the burdens of disease. Studies show that emergency health care improvements in developing countries should focus on ambulance response. Low-cost changes including emergency medical dispatch training in developing urban emergency health care systems can improve ambulance response times. Concerns about focusing on ambulance response time as a single indicator are addressed by showing a case sensitive approach for developing emergency health care systems that in return can identify ambulance response as main indicator for a particular system. This approach has been chosen for the subject of study, the Osh Ambulance Service, a municipal EMS in Kyrgyzstan. This particular service, the implemented research, the study design and, the data analysis are presented. The data show that there has been a change from an average response time of 23, 18 minutes to 20, 15 minutes. A new technique is developed utilizing the system pressure frequency response to locate and quantify leaks and blockages. The pressure frequency response is calculated at the downstream valve by the transfer matrix method. It is found that the presence of leaks and blockages alters the shape of the system pressure frequency response, the amplitude of pressure oscillations at even harmonics is increased and the amplitude at the odd harmonics is decreased. The increase in amplitude at the even harmonics is used to detect the location of leaks or blockages based on the leak and blockage frequency. For a simple pipeline, the technique successfully detected blockages up to 30% in size and leaks up to 2% of the mean discharge. Moreover, the computed results are verified by comparing with experimental measurements and those obtained by using the method of characteristics.

By 1960, psychology had come to be dominated by behaviorism and learning theory, which emphasized the observable stimulus and response components of human and animal behavior while ignoring the cognitive processes that mediate the relationship between the stimulus and response. The cognitive phenomena occurring within the "black box" between stimulus and response were of little interest to behaviorists, as their mathematical models worked without them. In 1960, the book "Plans and the Structure of Behavior," authored by George A. Miller, Eugene Galanter, and Karl H. Pribram, was published. In this volume, Miller and his colleagues sought to unify the behaviorists' learning theory with a cognitive model of learned behavior. Whereas the behaviorists suggested that a simple reflex arc underlies the acquisition of the stimulus-response relationship, Miller and his colleagues proposed that "some mediating organization of experience is necessary" somewhere between the stimulus and response, in effect a cognitive process which must include monitoring devices that control the acquisition of the stimulus-response relationship. They named this fundamental unit of behavior the T.O.T.E. for "Test - Operate - Test - Exit".

All physiological parameters observed higher values in combination of without decapitation and spraying of GA3 and thiourea at flower initiation. Yield and yield attributing parameters viz. number of seeds per pod and weight of 1000 seeds were the highest when cluster bean decapitate at 85 days after sowing and spraying of thiourea @ 500 mg/l. Whereas, Seed quality parameters like, seedling length, seedling dry weight and vigour index-I and II recorded the maximum values in combinations of decapitation at 70 days after sowing with treatments of GA3 and Thiourea spray. Maximum net return was obtained from decapitation at 70 days after sowing and spraying of thiourea 500 mg/l at flower initiation in cluster bean.

From functional aspect a flat-slab building is more efficient than a R.C. frame building. So, construction of Flat-Slab building is increasing also in high seismic zone. Sometimes international building codes remain silent about the seismic response of flat slab buildings. In this paper the response of Flat-Slab building and a normal symmetric R.C. frame building of same dimension have been studied for varying seismic intensities. Static, Response Spectrum, Pushover, and Time history analysis have been performed to assess the performance of the two buildings. The costs of construction for these two buildings have also been compared. An extensive study on lumped plasticity model as per FEMA 356 with varying position of plastic hinge and its effect on pushover curve has also discussed in the paper. The paper also comments on the plastic hinge pattern.

In real life, the experi­menter does not know the exact nature of the output of the process. So the output has to be approximated using a model.This work proposes the generation of a new response surface, Compromise Response Surface (CRS). The experimenter initially decides on all the possible models to be considered and the number of design points to be considered per model. Then the design is generated such that they are equally good for all the models considered. This design is called compromise design. The use of compromise design gives a better design than an augmented design. Then the methodology for the compromise design generation for linear through cubic for more than two variables is presented. The effectiveness of compromise design for more than two variables is tested on a problem with three variables.
