The first and only comprehensive review of current early childhood development theory, practices, policies, and the science behind them This unique and important bookprovides a comprehensive overview of the current theory, practices, and policies in early childhood development withinthe contexts of family, school, and community, and society at large. Moreover, it synthesizes scientifically rigorous research from an array of disciplines in an effort to identify the most effective strategies for promoting early childhood development. Research into childhood development is booming, and the scientific knowledge base concerning early childhood development is now greater than that of any other stage of the human life span. At the same time, efforts to apply that knowledge to early childhood practices, programs, and policies have never been greater or more urgent. Yet, surprisingly, until The Handbook of Early Childhood Development Programs, Practices, and Policies, there was no comprehensive, critical review of the applied science in the field. The book begins with in-depth coverage of child and family approaches. From there it moves onto a consideration of school- and community-based strategies. It concludes with a discussion of current social policies on health and development in early childhood and their implications. Provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the knowledge base, along with guidance for the future of the field Examines the underlying theory and basic science guiding efforts to promote early childhood development Critically reviews the strength of the empirical support for individual practices, programs, and policies Explores key opportunities and barriers policymakers and practitioners face when implementing various approaches Pays particular attention to socioeconomically disadvantaged and other disenfranchised populations The Handbook of Early Childhood Development Programs, Practices, and Policies is a valuable resource for practitioners, scholars, graduate students, and advanced undergraduate students across the social sciences who are interested in strengthening their understanding of current strategies for promoting early childhood development and the science informing those strategies.

This book examines the complexities of these negotiations in a particularly complicated and volatile context (Palestine) and a particularly"hot" development field (early childhood development). The international community's efforts to support early childhood programmingin the developing world fall more broadly within the empowerment camp than other development sectors, and, through theirgreater-than-average integration of civil society institutions, local communities, and governments, may serve as a source of important lessonsabout "fishing expeditions" in development more generally. This case, in particular, speaks to the conflux of interests, priorities, anddreams that shape local initiatives for early childhood development, and examines the ways in which the supposed students of fishing may, sometimes, teach their instructors a thing or two.

Early Childhood Development Education involves giving educational foundation to children aged eight years and below. This foundation should be holistic: catering for cognitive, linguistic, physical and moral well being of the child. During this period of growth, the child is under care of the parent and the teacher. The training of the teacher as a caregiver should prepare and equip the teacher with the vocational and practical knowledge and skills to ensure the expected all-round development of the child. This work analyses the ECDE policy, programmes and ECDE teacher training in Kenya to find out their effectiveness towards achieving holistic development as a central goal of ECDE.

In The Rhythmic Movement Method, author Dr. Harald Blomberg explains why rhythmic movement is more useful than drugs in treating ADHD and many other disorders. Based on the spontaneous rhythmic movements of infants, these actions are necessary for the development of the brain, motor abilities, emotions, and mental faculties. He introduces his method-rhythmic movement training-and describes how simple healing exercises stimulate the ability of the brain and the nervous system to renew itself and create new connections. Blomberg shares how these exercises help people develop and mature or heal physically, emotionally, and mentally. With case studies included, The Rhythmic Movement Method helps children with ADHD and adults suffering from depression, psychosis, Parkinson's disease, and other disorders to feel well, function better, and stop taking medications.

Music in Early Childhood Anyone who has been in an early childhood classroom knows that music is an important part of children's lives. Music is not only a part of our culture; it has a biological effect on our minds. While researchers are still studying the specific effects of music on cognitive learning and brain activity, studies have shown that music does have a positive impact. Teachers of young children have an awesome responsibility as they unearth the potential of their students. Many teachers feel inept in teaching music because they believe that they do not sing well enough or do not have enough musical knowledge. This leads them to rely on taped music and to use music as a tool for transitions rather than a cognitive area taught for its own value. Teachers can impart musical concepts to children in developmentally appropriate ways. This book will give early childhood teachers the means to accomplish this goal. This guide will assist teachers as they develop and present developmentally appropriate activities that teach musical concepts.

Moreover, in the literature there is a lack of studies on early childhood teachers' perceptions related to the physical environment for classroom management. Thus, this study aims to examine the perceptions of a group of early childhood teachers in relation to the influence of the physical environment of the classroom on classroom management. Lastly, since the recognition of the significance and impact of early childhood classrooms increase, the physical environment of these classrooms and its influence on classroom management should be determined to improve early education centers and programs.

Take a close look at sibling relationships–particularly how siblings navigate power, control, and influence and how the relationship affects the development of the individuals involved. While such relationships are both complementary and reciprocal, they transforms rather dramatically: from hierarchical in early and middle childhood, to egalitarian by early adulthood. This issue to examines: the processes and consequences of such dynamic power shifts for our broader understanding of how these relationship dynamics change and develop throughout the life course, how such dynamics may be similar or different cross-culturally, and how they influence the quality of the sibling relationship, as well as the well-being of youth. To do so, the authors present research from each developmental period from early childhood through young adulthood, as well as cross-cultural research, in order to further understanding of the developmental and contextual themes that allow for drawing broader conclusions. This is the 156th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Dental caries has been called a “silent epidemic” and is the most prevalent chronic disease affecting children. Though much has been written on the science and practice of managing this disease, publications are diverse in their loci, preventing easy access to the reader. Early Childhood Oral Health coalesces all the important information related to this topic in a comprehensive reference for students, academics, and practitioners. This second edition expands the scope of the first and puts an additional focus on interprofessional and global efforts that are necessary to manage the growing disease crisis and screening and risk assessment efforts that have expanded with the boom of new technologies. With updated references and incorporating the latest research, chapters address the biology and epidemiology of caries, the clinical management of early childhood caries, risk assessment, and early diagnosis. Other topics include public health approaches to managing caries worldwide, implementation of new caries prevention programs, fluoride regimens, and community programs, and family oral health education. Brand new are four chapters on the medical management of early childhood caries, considerations for children with special needs, interprofessional education and practice, and how the newest policy issues and the Affordable Care Act affect dental care. A must-read for pediatric dentists, cariologists, public health dentists, and students in these fields, Early Childhood Oral Health is also relevant for pediatricians and pediatric nursing specialists worldwide.
