Two-thirds of 2010 deaths worldwide were caused by non-communicable diseases with Cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and diabetes mellitus come on top of the causes of mortality. In 2008, 26.6 per 1000 female population deaths, and 46 per 1000 male population deaths in Saudi Arabia were attributed to non-communicable diseases. Data about the magnitude of NCDs among young population in the KSA are scarce. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of risk factors of non-conmmunicable diseases among female university students. Total coverage was carried out and a cross sectional study was done using the Arabic version of the WHO STEPs approach. The study showed that 3.1% of the students were current smokers, 61.7% were physically inactive, most of the students weren't consuming adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables. The prevalence of overweight, mild obesity and sever obesity among the students was (28.6%, 15% and 3.1% respectively). 2.5% of the students had unacceptable fasting blood glucose level, 31.1% had unacceptable fasting blood cholesterol level and 33.6% had unacceptable fasting blood triglycerides. A significant negative correlation was found between the BMI

M. Fawzi Mahomoodally, Stephanie Krige Socio-demographic Factors in Selected Eating Practices

Eating practices (EP) are important factors to consider in public health nutrition as people eat every day and throughout the day. Therefore, observing EP may give an idea of the nutritional status of individuals in the population. Indeed, certain EP may predict future health problems, such as high fast food consumption and obesity in certain developed countries. Other practices may be a form of prophylactic for certain diseases such as postulated in the French paradox. To this effect, studying EP within a population is complex due to the multiplicity of different factors which are involved in the process of choosing, acquiring, preparing and consuming food. While the number of non-communicable diseases is on the rise in many countries, there is an ever-growing need to gain information on the underlying nutritional causes to these diseases. In view of the fact that there is a dearth of literature pertaining to socio-demographic factors and EP in developing countries, this book therefore lay much emphasis on recent findings on this issue and explores the different eating practices in a multicultural and developing country like Mauritius.

Ali Khan Yousaf Measuring Financial Risk Modelling

Risk is always an important factor of our daily life activities. We encounter different kinds of risk factors every day. Most of our decisions are usually made in the state of uncertainty or risk. The concept of risk is particularly important in finance. In finance, risk can be defined as the degree of uncertainty about future net return. In different financial institutions people are interested in how to measure risk. This book is mainly divided into two parts. The first part conducts analysis about how to opt for an appropriate approach to measuring financial risk, outlining different types of risk and measurement techniques for computing risk. The main computational technique which i use is the Value at Risk or in short VaR. VaR has become the standard measurement technique that financial analysts use to quantify risk. This technique is a benchmark for the exposure of financial risk. In contrast i also use an alternative risk measure tool called conditional value at risk or in short CVaR. In the second part i have evaluated the performance of different non linear models to forecast stock markets volatility using daily data.

Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Biology - Diseases, Health, Nutrition, , language: English, abstract: The prevalence of cervical cancer and mortality rates has continued over the years despite several international and local efforts to reduce it in developing countries particularly sub-Saharan Africa which have the highest prevalence rates globally. This dissertation appraised the factors responsible for cervical cancer prevalence and assayed the efficacy of these interventions with particular focus on Nigeria by identifying the risk factors causing its spread and recommending prevention strategies for best options in reducing rates of cervical cancer in Nigeria.A systematic literature approach was used for the review of studies. This was carried out through database search on the prevalence, risk, mortality, factors and intervention for cervical cancer in developing countries with a narrative analysis to explanation for the local, national and international interventions. The findings revealed that lack of a national policy on cervical cancer on awareness, treatment, prevention and control, limit intervention efforts. Furthermore, massive overlaps in the international intervention programme, paucity of data on the analysis of impact and efficacy of these interventions, including unavailability of vaccine for high risk HPV stymie efforts for the reduction of cervical cancer in Nigeria. It was further established that the lack of a national policy on cervica...

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is the home for only remaining population of wild buffaloes in Nepal. It shares habitat with domestic buffaloes and human, which has increased the risk of persistence of diseases like Bovine Tuberculosis(BTB). A study was done in Buffer Zone of this Wildlife Reserve to study frequency of BTB and risk factors associated with it. Tuberculin testing was conducted among selected domestic buffaloes using single intradermal test (SIDT); 11.71% were found positive to BTB. Several factors like age of animal, lactation and period of domestic buffaloes grazing inside the reserve were significantly associated with BTB infection. Although 24.5% of interviewed households had at least one human tuberculosis case in the family, no statistically significant association was observed between diseased buffalo and human tuberculosis in the household. Only few people in the area had knowledge of BTB, and they were not conscious of its transmission between livestock, human and wild animals. This study emphasizes the risk of disease transmission in wildlife-livestock interface which is useful reference for the professionals working in wildlife reserves.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution and is associated with serious consequences for public health, long term treatments, slow recovery and serious sequelae in the musculoskeletal and nervous system in some cases. Several variables are associated with the acquisition of human brucellosis such as consumption of unpasteurized milk and dairy products, exposure to infected domestic animals, herding and being in a family that had brucellosis index case. Despite its control in many countries, human brucellosis still remains a public health problem in other regions. This book explored various risk factors associated with brucellosis acquisition. Most of these variables are modifiable, and efforts should be focused on public health education regarding the disease and its risk factors, improvements in recognition and notification systems and active cooperation between health and veterinary ministries to reduce the incidence of the disease.

Every existing method faces major problems in assessing the numerous and partly non-observable factors influencing credit risk. Juliann Moen Basic Health Care Series - Cancer

Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss and a change in bowel movements. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may have other causes. Over 100 types of cancers affect humans. Cancer prevention is defined as active measures to decrease cancer risk. The vast majority of cancer cases are due to environmental risk factors. Many of these environmental factors are controllable lifestyle choices. Thus, cancer is generally preventable. Between 70% and 90% of common cancers are due to environmental factors and therefore potentially preventable. This book is intended to provide a relatively short overview of important concepts and notions on the molecular biology of human cancers, including many facts essential to find one's way in this field.

Pollinators play a vital role in ecosystem health and are essential to ensuring food security. With declines in both managed and wild pollinator populations in recent years, scientists and regulators have sought answers to this problem and have explored implementing steps to protect pollinator populations now and for the future. Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators focuses on the role pesticides play in impacting bee populations and looks to develop a risk assessment process, along with the data to inform that process, to better assess the potential risks that can accompany the use of pesticide products. Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators opens with two chapters that provide a biological background of both Apis and non-Apis species of pollinators. Chapters then present an overview of the general regulatory risk assessment process and decision-making processes. The book then discusses the core elements of a risk assessment, including exposure estimation, laboratory testing, and field testing. The book concludes with chapters on statistical and modeling tools, and proposed additional research that may be useful in developing the ability to assess the impacts of pesticide use on pollinator populations. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Army Department of the Engineering and Design - Risk-Based Analysis for Flood Damage Reduction Studies

Risk involves exposure to a chance of injury or loss. The fact that risk inherently involves chance leads directly to a need to describe and to deal with uncertainty. Corps policy has long been (1) to acknowledge risk and the uncertainty in predicting floods and flood impacts, and (2) to plan accordingly. Historically, that planning relied on analysis of the expected long-term performance of flood-damage-reduction measures, on application of safety factors and freeboard, on designing for worst-case scenarios, and on other indirect solutions to compensate for uncertainty. These indirect approaches were necessary because of the lack of technical knowledge of the complex interaction of uncertainties in predicting hydrologic, hydraulic, and economic functions and because of the complexities of the mathematics required to do otherwise.

Hossam Hassan Khamis, Azza Galal Farghaly, Hanan Zakaria Shatat Prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection among pregnant women in a rural district in Egypt

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Medicine - Public Health, , language: English, abstract: Background: Egypt has the highest prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the world. Screening of HCV during pregnancy is not routinely done in Egypt as many other countries, although pregnancy is an important period where screening of HCV infection is important owing to low immunity, the possibility of vertical transmission and later on horizontal transmission to the baby or other household contacts.Aim: to determine the seroprevalence of HCV antibodies (HCV-Ab) and risk factors associated with infection among pregnant women in Egypt.Patients and Method: 360 pregnant women visiting the health care units for routine antenatal care were tested using 3rd generation ELISA test for detection of HCV-Ab. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done for seropositive cases. Results: 6.1% (22/360) of pregnant women were HCV seropositive; of them only (9/20; 45%) had viraemia. Risk factors were their age, the age of their and the presence of chronic liver disease in the husband. Conclusion: The prevalence of HCV infection in pregnant women in Egypt appears to be lower than previously reported. The detected risk factors are old age of the pregnant women and their husbands and chronic liver disease in the husbands. None of the other known risk factors was found to be significantly associated with HCV infection in pregnant women.

Thirunavukkarasu M. Metabolic Diseases in Bovines. An Economic Evaluation

Intensification of livestock production systems have made the economic implications of diseases in livestock increasingly important. This is because, the diseases in livestock represent avoidable waste of the already scarce resources. Hence, procedures and tools for disease loss estimations are now infused into the studies concerning the field of animal health economics. However, documented evidences on the economics of important bovine diseases, more specifically metabolic diseases, which cause major financial setbacks to the farmers when their bovines just start returning them profits, are scanty. This book, "Metabolic Diseases in Bovines: An Economic Evaluation" deals with various aspects of epidemiology and estimation of disease losses, including the analyses of the factors predisposing to the economically important metabolic diseases such as milk fever and ketosis in bovines and estimation of economic losses associated with these diseases. Besides, the book also suggests various disease prevention strategies in the context of the losses estimated. These aspects make this book much useful to the epidemiologists, animal health economists, policy makers and animal researchers.

Ebersoll Maik How To Quantify Compliance Risk

Today's publications on legal compliance very often use terms like risk, risk analysis, risk assessment, risk measurement, risk management, etc. However, the question on how those terms can be applied and implemented in everyday business remains unanswered far too often. This monograph strives to change this finding. Using the example of an internationally operating group of companies, an interdisciplinary approach to the identification and operationalization of compliance risk is developed, enabling measurement of company-specific risk exposure and its components on a metric scale. The applied methodology creates an instructive and very helpful set of monetary and non-monetary quantities, which are qualified to support companies' efforts in strategic and operative risk management. Resulting findings can be used to align compliance efforts with the legal risk landscape, e.g. when selecting and prioritizing risk mitigation measures against the backdrop of the manifold risks, risk areas, geographies, legal entities, etc. Additionally, statements can be derived concerning the adequacy of compliance measures, intensity of risk prevention and the value added to a company's success by those measures.

Neurodegenerative diseases of the human brain appear in various forms, resulting in disorders of movement and coordination, cognitive deterioration and psychiatric disturbances. Many of the key factors leading to neurodegenerative diseases are similar, including the dysfunction of metal ion homeostasis, redox-active metal ions generating oxidative stress, and intracellular inclusion bodies. Metal-based Neurodegeneration presents a detailed survey of the molecular origins of neurodegenerative diseases. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific disease, presenting the latest scientific findings, including details of their biochemical actors (proteins or peptides), their normal and pathological conformations, and a description of the diseases characteristics, with an emphasis on the role of metal-induced oxidative stress, which can result in the production of intracellular aggregates of target proteins and peptides. Topics covered include: Brain function, physiology and the blood-brain barrier Immune system and neuroinflammation Aging and mild cognitive impairment, MCI Parkinson’s Disease Alzheimer’s Disease Creutzfelt-Jakob and related prion diseases Alcoholic Brain Damage Therapeutic strategies to combat the onset and progression of neurological diseases This extensively updated, full colour, second edition of Metal-based Neurodegeneration is an essential text for research scientists and clinicians working in gerontology, neuropathology, neurochemistry, and metalloprotein mechanisms.
