A volume in International Advances in Education:Global Initiatives for Equity and Social JusticeSeries Editors: Elinor L. Brown, University of Kentucky; Rhonda G. Craven, University of Western Sydney;and George McLean, Catholic Universities of AmericaDemocratizing educational access and building capacity in developing countries and amongst indigenous peoples in developed countries may beelusive but are hopeful goals. Many developing countries are striving to reengineer their incoherent education systems at a time when they aremost vulnerable, particularly with susceptibility to natural disasters, political unrests, and economic instabilities (UNESCO, 2007). Similarly, indigenous peoples in developed countries are seeking more control over education as they consider the long‐term effects of educational policiesthat have been forced on them.Research on education and social change in developing countries has a long history (Glewwe, 2002;Hanushek, 1995; Sider, 2011). However, there is limited research on educational capacity‐buildingin developing countries such as Kenya, Honduras, Haiti, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Peru, China, andThailand. Further, the educational frameworks by which Indigenous peoples (Māori, Canada's FirstNations, and American Indian/Alaska Natives) have been educated have some significant similaritiesto those encountered in developing countries. Advances in Research and Praxis in Special Education in Africa, Caribbean, and the Middle East

This edited volume explores various issues pertaining to the education of children with disabilities in Africa, the Caribbean and Middle East. As a group, persons with disabilities have been subjected to social, culturaland educational exclusions of various forms and for various socially-scripted reasons. In education, forinstance, individuals with disabilities have been altogether excluded from educational participation in manyparts of the developing world or they have been excluded from pursuing meaningfully beneficial higherlevels of education in developed countries like the United States. One of the social responses/remedies to thewidely-acknowledged exclusionary practices experienced by learners with disabilities has been the widespread implementation of inclusive practicesin the education of individuals with disabilities across countries, in the west and the developing regions of the world. A distinctive marker of differencein the way inclusive practices have been enacted in western countries versus those in the developing world has primarily stemmed from the fact thatmajority of western countries operate under funded mandates that also regulate the provision of education to persons with disabilities. While the idealof inclusion has been highly desirable, many of countries in the developing world have floundered in their implementation due to lack sound legislativeframework to guide implementation coupled with socio-cultural factors related to negative perceptions of dis...

The definition of quality education depends upon the subject's perspective. For example, for the students it may stand for the facilities provided to them; for parents it may be the learning outcomes; for teachers it may be the improvement of teaching learning processes; for prospective employers it may be the nature of the output. Secondary education takes a vital part in the formation of active citizens and also plays a critical role in addressing the emerging human development concerns in countries engaged in building knowledge societies to stay connected to the process of globalization. The role of secondary education in the growth of a nation is paramount and significant, more particularly in developing countries. Secondary education is the single largest supplier of labour force in most of the developing countries, including India. In view of the relation between education and economic growth in a less developed state like India, it is not the highly sophisticated manpower but the middle level (secondary) manpower that is necessary for enhancing the economic growth. This study deals with secondary education in Tripura, India. Academicians, researchers and students who are interested in studying secondary education in general and secondary education of Tripura in particular are the target group of this book which will surely help them to understand the problem of quality secondary education in India.

In 'Competitiveness and Development', the author explains the confusion surrounding the concept of competitiveness in the context of developing countries; proposes policies for achieving competitiveness at a high level of development; examines its possibilities and constraints; and suggests policy changes necessary at the national and international levels. Shafaeddin illustrates how developed countries impose restrictive policies on developing countries through international financial institutions and the WTO, as well as regional and bilateral agreements, which limit their policy space for promoting dynamic comparative advantage in order to achieve competitiveness at a high level of development. Ultimately, such policies lock developing countries that are at early stages of development in specialization based on static comparative advantage and competitiveness at a low level of development.

Matt Sekerke Bayesian Risk Management. A Guide to Model Risk and Sequential Learning in Financial Markets

A risk measurement and management framework that takes model risk seriously Most financial risk models assume the future will look like the past, but effective risk management depends on identifying fundamental changes in the marketplace as they occur. Bayesian Risk Management details a more flexible approach to risk management, and provides tools to measure financial risk in a dynamic market environment. This book opens discussion about uncertainty in model parameters, model specifications, and model-driven forecasts in a way that standard statistical risk measurement does not. And unlike current machine learning-based methods, the framework presented here allows you to measure risk in a fully-Bayesian setting without losing the structure afforded by parametric risk and asset-pricing models. Recognize the assumptions embodied in classical statistics Quantify model risk along multiple dimensions without backtesting Model time series without assuming stationarity Estimate state-space time series models online with simulation methods Uncover uncertainty in workhorse risk and asset-pricing models Embed Bayesian thinking about risk within a complex organization Ignoring uncertainty in risk modeling creates an illusion of mastery and fosters erroneous decision-making. Firms who ignore the many dimensions of model risk measure too little risk, and end up taking on too much. Bayesian Risk Management provides a roadmap to better risk management through more circumspect measurement, with comprehensive treatment of model uncertainty.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, , language: English, abstract: The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is a high quality and principle based reporting standards that remove many accounting alternatives. It is therefore, consequently expected to limit the management's discretion and lessen practices on earnings management. Quite the opposite, some researchers argue that the flexibility in IFRS and its fair value pre-eminence might afford greater opportunities for firms to manage earnings. It is this inaptness which incited and aggravated the conduct of this study. This study applies a desktop review to investigate the worldwide existing empirical research evidence on the effect of IFRS on earnings management post- IFRS adoption and in relation to other reporting standards and reports whether the results are indistinguishable between developed and developing economies. Accounting research in developed economies has long identified earnings management as a means by which managers manipulate financial reports to mislead other stakeholders on the underlying economic performance of the firm. However, earnings management research did not receive much attention in developing countries such as Nigeria until recently. The findings reveal that the existing empirical crams and conclusions there on are mixed, inconsistent and difficult to generalise. This indicates the pressing need for countr...

Ethics and Risk Management

A volume in Ethics in PracticeSeries Editors Robert A. Giacalone, University of Denverand Carole L. Jurkiewicz, Hofstra UniversityThe underlying rationale for this book is to present research that a) highlights the explosively political anddeeply divisive issues involved in managing risk and b) address the empirical deficit and theoreticalchallenges related to managing societal risk ethically. Extant risk management research borrows heavilyfrom engineering, systems theory and business management, and is primarily focused on probabilities, modeling, and abstractions of the value of mitigative action. This research engenders a false sense ofobjectivity and it de-politicizes fundamental political and democratic questions about the allocation ofsociety's scarce resources and about the balance of responsibilities between governing institutions andindividuals with regard to risk. The quantitative and hard-science focus on risk also keeps a discussion ofthe consequences of the distribution of risk, resources and responsibilities for real people out of the limelight. The contributors to this book are experts in a wide range of academic fields and in this book they takeon the challenge of examining their core research with a specific ethics perspective. They explore the ethicsof risk management using theory, cases and data from a range of policy areas, countries and philosophical traditions. This book should be of interest to scholars and practitioners working in fields that deal ei...

Gain a holistic view of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market risk transfer Increasing agricultural production and food security remain key challenges for mankind. In order to meet global food demand, the Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that production has to increase by 50% by 2050 and requires large investments. Agricultural insurance and financial instruments have been an integral part to advancing productivity and are becoming more important in increasingly globalized and specialized agricultural supply chains in the wake of potentially more frequent and severe natural disasters in today’s key producing markets. Underwriting, pricing and transferring agricultural risks is complex and requires a solid understanding of the production system, exposure, perils and the most suitable products, which vastly differ among developed and developing markets. In the last decade, new insurance schemes in emerging agricultural markets have greatly contributed to the large growth of the industry from a premium volume of US$10.1 billion (2006) to US$30.7 billion (2017). This growth is bound to continue as insurance penetration and exposure increase and new schemes are being developed. Agricultural (re)insurance has become a cornerstone of sovereign disaster risk financing frameworks. Developing Countries in the World Trading System: The Uruguay Round and Beyond

Experience suggests that trade liberalization has contributed substantially to the remarkable growth of industrialised countries. However, for various reasons many developing countries have not yet been able to integrate successfully into global markets and reap the growth-inducing and poverty-reducing benefits of trade. This book argues that while developing countries are heavily represented in the WTO - accounting for about four fifths of its membership -there is still plenty of scope for the world trading system to work more effectively in their interests. The book examines the achievements of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations in reforming the world trading system and the challenges to future reforms. It begins with an overview of the genesis of the world trading system and moves on to examine the key issues as they relate to developing countries. These include further liberalization of agricultural trade; abolition of the Multifibre Arrangement; environmental and labour standards; competition policy; regional integration in South East Asia; and the implications for developing Asian countries of the liberalization of the Chinese economy and its WTO membership. Furthermore, the book discusses the links between trade liberalization and poverty reduction -drawing on the experience of Asian countries - and puts forward arguments on how trade liberalization could effect a greater reduction in poverty. This is a timely and succinct presentation of the critical issues relat...

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, language: English, abstract: Today we live in a globalized world and anybody can buy any product from any country in the world. But that is not completely true. Trade is not as free as many of us always think it is. There are still so many trade barriers which make international trade sometimes such an adventure. The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established to liberalize trade by reducing or eliminating tariffs and any other trade barriers. Therefore, all members have to contribute to that undertaking and make concessions. In the current round, named the Doha Development Agenda this does not work as it was meant to. A crucial issue in that conflict is agriculture. Developing countries and least developed countries complain about large amounts of subsidies paid by high-income countries such as the EU. In contrast, developed countries want developing countries to make concessions in terms of trade related intellectual property rights and trade related investment measures. So each country blames the other one instead of taking action and making the first step. This essay is structured into two main parts. The first part informs about some basics of protectionism and what happened so far in terms of agricultural liberalization. Chapter two gives a short overview of the existing types of protectionist measures to get a f...
