River basins may have gauged and ungauged catchments. To determine flow contributions from the catchments distributed parameter modeling is required. Geographic Information System (GIS) can handle spatially varied parameters efficiently and is useful in developing IUH/UH for watersheds. Multiple inflows routing model can integrate a number of upstream flows to compute the common downstream flow rate on the basis of several upstream flows. This book describes flood flow modeling for river systems having a number of gauged and ungauged watersheds. Flow contribution from the ungauged watersheds during the selected storm events are determined by applying GIUH and NRCS techniques. Watersheds are segmented into a number of sub-watersheds and geomorphologic parameters are estimated by applying GIS tools. UHs for the sub-watersheds are routed and superimposed to derive UH at the main watersheds outlet. Outflows from the gauged and ungauged watersheds are integrated and routed to estimate the inundation area per meter length of the channel at the common downstream section in a river system.

This research focuses on Somb River flowing in Haryana as well as Himachal Pradesh, India which is the sub-basin of River Yamuna. It aims at preparation of the flood extent maps revealing the amount of landuse getting affected due to flooding in which the hydrological modeling softwares HEC RAS 4.1 and HEC-GeoRAS 4.2.93 respectively has been used which are open source along with the ArcGIS 9.3 and Erdas Imagine 9.2 softwares which are proprietary in nature. The research revealed that most of the area lying close to the Somb River flood-plain are under severe threat to flash floods for each return period i.e 5 year, 10 year, 25 year, 50 year and 100 year flood respectively.

External changes around urbanized areas can created new hazard problems, which some times completely unpredicted before. An example of an external change of a city that may create a new hazard is disturbances in the upstream river network that carry water stream into the city. The newly established river flow configuration can change the characteristics of water that entering the city, including volume, velocity, viscosity, etc. This book explores how to analyze possible impacts due to changes in the upstream river network to flood problems in an urbanized area using 1D2D flood modelling in SOBEK software, which was developed by Delft Hydraulics. Different flood scenarios were developed by adjusting the flood modelling parameters, and then, Flood Hazard Analysis and Flood Risk Analysis were performed to determine the extent of flood problems caused by changes in the upstream river network. Results of the flood modelling show that indeed, urban areas are facing an increasing flood hazard due to changes in upstream river network.

The runoff from upstream Gumara and Ribb watersheds, runoff from direct rainfall, and overflows from Lake Tana along the shoreline are the main causes of flooding in the area. The most likely reasons are related to the frequent changes of catchment characteristics, agricultural development of the area, population growth and other interrelated factors. Owing to the adverse nature of flooding events, this study was focused on developing a flood control strategy under regulatory operations of the proposed reservoirs, Gumara and Ribb reservoirs, and understanding the flood behavior to reduce flood risks.The methodologies adopted were a hydrological model in HEC-HMS to generate runoff in the watersheds, simulations of the proposed reservoirs by imposing a separately developed reservoir operation rule curves. Reservoir operating rule curves were developed using Discrete Dynamic Programing (DDP). Reservoir operating rule curves play a significant role to control floods downstream. Damodar River of India is popularized as ‘Sorrow of Bengal’ due to massive unpredictable destruction in the monsoonal floods, recorded since 1665.Taking three prime objectives of development: (1) flood control, (2) extensive irrigation and (3) power generation, Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) was established in 1948 as India’s first multipurpose river valley project on the Damodar River Basin. Four large dams, Durgapur barrage and Tenughat reservoir are built to tamp the flood prone Damodar River using the water resource in an integrated method. Carrying sixty years of legacy, the existing drainage and flood control system of DVC has aggravated a number of hydrogeomorphic problems especially in the lower segment of Damodar, viz., siltation of river bed and reservoirs, uncontrolled monsoonal stream flow, declining carrying capacity of lower course, drainage congestion, low-high magnitude annual floods, decay of palaeochannels etc. Highlighting the existing problems, this research work mainly tries to analyze the pre-dam and post-dam flood hydrology and risk assessment of Damodar River Basin which can be applied in the flood management strategies of West Bengal.

The research’s result demonstrates that there is spatial and temporal differentiation of flow characteristics along Bribin River attributable to the comportment of karst aquifer toward discharging its diffuse, fissure, or conduit flow components, which consequence to the dissimilarity of diffuse flow proportion (PAD) distribution along Bribin River. Accordingly, PAD characteristics result to dry season hydrogeochemical condition of Bribin River. However, wet season hydrogeochemical condition is more influenced by means of dilution by precipitation process within flood events, which exaggerates CO2 content of water. Generally, the upper-stream cave tend to more aggressive in dissolving limestone, contrast to down-steam cave that be inclined to precipitate carbonate mineral as a result of their differentiation of cavities configuration.

Modeling of matrix-fracture transfer function is important in the simulation of fluid flow in fractured porous media using a dual-porosity concept. One of the main focuses of this book is to find the transfer function for the single-phase flow of compressible fluids in fractured media using the solution of nonlinear gas diffusivity equation. The developed shape factor and transfer function can be used as an input for modeling flow of compressible fluids in dual-porosity systems. Another major purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the fracture pressure depletion regime on the shape factor and transfer function for single-phase flow of a compressible fluid. For accurate prediction of fluid transfer between the matrix and fracture systems the effect of variable block size distribution should be considered. The proposed model is also able to simulate fluid exchange between matrix and fracture for continuous or discrete block size distributions. This solution can be simplified to model flow of slightly compressible fluids like water or oil in dual-porosity (fractured porous) media.

Based on complex power flow models, different optimization problems are mathematically formulated and solved. In addition, novel mathematical models and a new combined problem formulation for active-reactive optimal power flow (A-R-OPF) in passive distribution networks (PDNs) (without DG units and BSSs) and active distribution networks (ADNs) (with DG units and BSSs) are studied. Typically, distribution networks (DNs) consist of two different networks in terms of voltage levels, namely, low-voltage and medium-voltage DNs. For this reason, investigations are carried out separately on both networks. Modeling procedures for PDNs, ADNs, and energy prices are presented. These procedures serve as the basis for this work.

A high-resolution hydro-dynamic model for Delaware Bay was developed, validated and applied to hindcast the largely unknown tracers and circultions of the bay, to investigate the roles of these factors in influencing oyster diseases (e.g., the Multinucleated Spheres of unknown origin, MSX), and to inquiry into the future fate of the bay in response to climate change. In the contemporary bay, a negative temperature/salinity correlation was determined to exist under the modern climate via a positive river flow/temperature correlation and a negative river flow/salinity correlation; warm-salty conditions rarely occur, which helps control MSX; a substantial horizontal salinity gradient provides a habitable refuge for oysters. However, according to the sensitivity studies, sea-level rise and warmer surface air may significantly salinize and warm the bay. Intensified river flow cannot reduce the SLR-induced salinization. The new physical environment may be generally unfavorable to oysters if they are related to oyster diseases.
