The Public Perception of Policing in Rural Areas

Rural crime is on the increase; however it is a topic often overlooked by modern criminologists due to a widely believed ideal that a rural area is a crime free area. In many rural communities there is a lack of pro-active police presence, because of the large areas officers have to patrol. “Rural” crime is defined differently by separate police forces and other leading authorities, which can make gathering statistics on rural offences difficult. Today’s society and technology has allowed rural crime to become more organised and professional. This has led to the majority of UK police forces developing new tactics and job roles to tackle rural crime, such as appointing rural crime officers and developing Neighborhood Watch associations. Using questionnaires to gather primary data about rural and urban communities, this book aims to assess the public perception of the policing of rural areas, focusing particularly on the importance of community insight and the opinions regarding those who police urban and rural communities.

Because this study examines bank angel investors, related banking literature is examined including industry structure, economies of scale and American attitudes favoring local control. The study found that bank angel investors are successful entrepreneurs who are motivated not only by financial return, but also by non-financial benefits such as helping create a new venture and meeting community needs. The researcher’s interpretation of the data finds that bank angel investors are similar to general angel investors in most characteristics; however, expected returns and perceptions of risk for bank investments were lower than typical angel investments.

In this context, the Caribbean postal sector is examined in an attempt to synchronize efforts to reinforce the sector within the development framework of the CSME. Numerous postal operators across the world still hold to the position of a single postal territory, to ensure that all postal customers enjoy the right to a hitherto unchallenged universal postal service involving the permanent provision of quality basic postal services at all points in their respective territories, at affordable prices. However, the grim reality is that the postal sector has undergone a significant transformation and the landscape has changed dramatically. Against this backdrop, the goal of maintaining the status quo of a static and traditional universal postal service is increasingly untenable. A dynamic and flexible capacity/market based approach has been developed to overhaul the archaic universal postal service; thereby increasing its relevance, applicability and commercial robustness. In a very real sense, it is “high noon” for the traditional universal postal service. The proposed capacity/market based approach will facilitate the creation of a vibrant new world order for the universal postal service best suited to the 21st. century.

Unfortunately, new technology based products need investments in tooling and development, which do not figure in the method of operation for purchase in the Government Sector. The attempt of the project is to provide well designed products in the public domain. Having maintenance-free letter boxes was the long time requirement by the Indian post. As a part of initial step in design process related literature and patents are reviewed. A few of those researches and patents by great designers and inventors are explored here, which are related directly or indirectly to the proposed area of work that is design of a “Letter box for Indian postal service”. These papers are to support and enlighten the whole process of design in the specific area.

Portfolio Selection Approach for Efficiently Diversified Investments

Finance often uses statistics based on historical information as standings. This is often considered a leap of faith, not always correct. It is assumed investors only take into account two parameters of return distribution when making investment decisions. In other words, it is assumed that a security can be completely represented in terms of its expected return and risk, and that investors behave as if a security was a commodity with these two attributes. A portfolio structure modeling relies on available information analysis, and also investors or professionals’ knowledge and experience, shaping market expectations for investment decisions. This approach shows how many tools, combined with traditional statistics applied for portfolio selection can model different portfolios based on risk tolerance.

Michelle Leder Financial Fine Print. Uncovering a Company's True Value

Thirty-five million individual investors jumped into the stock market for the first time during the late 1990s without asking questions about the stocks they were buying. When the bubble burst and the large number of accounting scandals began to grow, most investors didn’t know where to turn or whom to trust. Now it has become more important than ever for investors to take matters into their own hands. Financial Fine Print: Uncovering a Company’s True Value lets individual investors in on the secrets that seasoned professional investors use when they evaluate a potential investment. Buried deep in a company’s quarterly (10-Q) and annual (10-K) reports are the real clues to a company’s financial health: the footnotes. At many large companies, these footnotes can run for more than 30 pages and for some corporations have doubled in the past five years, making them simply too important for investors to ignore. Financial Fine Print spells out exactly what investors need to look for within the footnotes of a company’s reports in order to make better, more informed decisions. By using numerous examples of actual footnotes that have appeared in SEC documents, the book teaches investors in easy-to-understand language ways to spot – and avoid – future Enrons and Worldcoms (and Tycos and Adelphias and HealthSouths). For any investor who has spent the past three years watching their investments shrink and has begun to think about getting back into the market, this book provides the critical tools that investors need to know to avoid getting burned once again.

Investment Climate of Russia’s Oil and Gas Industry

Despite the harmful environmental effects of fossil energy, forecasts show that in the next decades the global economy will still rely heavily on energy resources like oil and gas. Therefore, countries like Russia will remain important suppliers on international oil and gas markets. But in order to satisfy future demand, Russia has to develop new oil and gas fields, especially in its arctic regions. Moreover, these demanding climate zones call for the support of foreign energy companies to realize the necessary investments. Therefore, the thesis evaluates the investment climate of Russia’s oil and gas industry and associated risk factors. By considering the performance of two major foreign investors, the thesis reveals risk factors far beyond operational challenges. As foreign energy companies face substantial political intervention and economic instabilities, the thesis further outlines the risk potential of those specific country risk factors. Given the highly unfavourable situation of foreign energy companies in Russia, the thesis evaluates the possibilities of risk assessment by performing a Value-at-Risk-Analysis. The approach shows how investors could possibly assess financial risk of investments. But with regard to Russia’s oil and gas industry, the analysis also discloses undeniable limitations of quantitative measures, making investments in Russia still adventurous.

A Study Of Risk Taking Behavior In The Malaysian Stock Market

The lack of retail participation in the Malaysian stock market in recent time poses a very interesting question: what are reasons that are making the retail investors to shy away from the market now given the fact that they accounted for about 60 percent of the volume in the market during the 90’s? In light of this, the present study examines the risk taking behavior of retail investors in the Malaysian stock market using the theoretical framework proposed by Sitkin and Pablo (1992) in order to see if risk aversion is a factor that is causing the retail investors to participate less in the market. In assessing their risk taking behavior, situational characteristics, problem characteristics and also individual characteristics are looked into. The findings show that risk preference and inertia had significant effect on risk propensity whereas problem domain familiarity had significant effect on risk perception. This study failed to confirm the mediating role of risk propensity and risk perception. Overall, inertia, less risk outcome history and risk propensity have been found to have significant effect on the risk taking behavior of retail investors in the Malaysian stock market.

Phil Trupp Ruthless. How Enraged Investors Reclaimed Their Investments and Beat Wall Street

Ruthless is a candid exploration of the criminal subculture of Wall Street, and one of the first books to speak for the victims of the financial meltdown. On February 14, 2008, author Phil Trupp received a call from one of his brokers telling him a large portion of his investments were frozen—on ice—turning his life and plans for retirement upside down. When the fog started to clear, Trupp realized he was one of many investors caught up in what experts called the greatest attempted securities fraud in modern Wall Street history—a $336 billion scam which made the savings and loan scandal of the 1980s look like a simple street mugging. The path to destruction, financial or otherwise, often begins with a simple proposition. For author Phil Trupp it came from one of his stock brokers: «Take it, Phil. It’s free money.» This free money came from auction-rate securities (ARS). Auction-Rate Securities are corporate or municipal bonds with a long-term maturity for which the interest rate is reset at frequent auctions. ARS interest rates were higher than money markets and were sold as completely safe, liquid, Triple-A rated «cash equivalents,» a deceptive sales pitch that lured hundreds of thousands of investors to buy the securities. Since 2008, most auctions have failed leaving the market largely frozen. The victims ranged from individual investors to the Joffee Foundation, a nonprofit that can no longer fund programs that help prevent AIDS in Africa, to the Port Authority of New York. While this is a classic 21st century tale of Wall Street greed and betrayal, it is also a story of redemption and the life-altering struggle of American investors and others around the world who, in the end, beat the Wall Street fraud-masters. Ruthless is a story of how individual investors became mad as hell and joined together to reclaim their cash investments. So far they’ve reclaimed more than $200 billion and continue fighting for the rest. A lively, page-turning guide for any investor with a stunning lesson on how to fight back and win.

An Assessment of Factors behind Rural-Urban Migration in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is over populated country in the world. Every day a lot of rural people come to urban area for many reasons. Rural people are mostly dependent on urban area because the government always pays a narrow role for rural area. In this situation, the study mainly focused on the real factors of rural-urban migration. The major concentration were identified the characteristics of migrants, the factors of rural-urban migration or causes and consequences of this migration and what can be the possible solution to manage this situation. The present study reveals that the process of migration in Bangladesh is strongly influenced by both the push and the pull factors, of which the principal push factor is the situation of insufficient job prospects in the villages, while the perception of the higher probability of getting employment and earning higher income in the cities is the predominant pull factor. From the analysis it is clear that unless the gap between urban and rural areas in terms of the quality of life and and living conditions can be systematically narrowed down, the commended solution cannot be achieved. The Government will be the main role player to manage this.

There is a persistent shortage of qualified health workers (HWs) globally, but worse in rural areas of developing countries. There are a number of pull and push factors that determine the HWs' location practice. In this study, the intentions of Ugandan medical students to work in rural health facities (HFs) after qualification were sounded out, together with the factors that affect them and their perception of rural areas. The study covered five government medical schools. Students of all years of study were interviewed, as well as KIs in the school administrations. Atleast 50% didn't intend to work in rural HFs after training while ahalf was divided equally among those who wanted and un-sure. The peak for those who showed intent to work in rual HFs was 4th and 2nd year for student doctors and clinical officers respectively. Other factors were also assessed. The paper recommends review of the community exposure programs for medical schools and improved support supervision in the field among others. It also recommends better facilitation of rural HFs and better incentives/ remuneration for rural HWs.

The reported profit is of important fiscal information to be considered during decisions. Fiscal analyzers generally consider the reported profit as an important factor in their considerations and judgments. Also the investors depend on the fiscal information in the fiscal statements of economic departments specially the reported profit when they decide about investment. The investors believe that fixed profit compared to fluctuated profit guarantees higher divisible profit payment. Also the profit fluctuations are considered as important criterion for risk by company and the companies with more smoothed profit have less risk. So the companies with more smoothed profit are more interesting for investors and are considered more appropriate to their investments.

Beyond Vision

Beyond Vision brings together eight essays by Casey O'Callaghan. The works draw theoretical and philosophical lessons about perception, the nature of its objects, and sensory awareness through sustained attention to extra-visual and multisensory forms of perception and perceptual consciousness. O'Callaghan focuses on auditory perception, perception of spoken language, and multisensory perception. The first essays concern the nature of audition's objects, focusing on sounds, especially drawing attention to the ways in which they contrast with vision's objects. The middle essays explore forms of auditory perception that could not be explained without understanding audition's interactions with other senses. This bridges work on sound perception with work on multisensory perception, and it raises multisensory perception as an important topic for understanding perception even in a single modality. The last essays are devoted to multisensory perception and perceptual consciousness. They argue that no complete account of perception overall or of multisensory perceptual consciousness can be developed in modality-specific terms-perceiving amounts to more than just seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling at the same time. The final essay presents a new framework for understanding what it is to be modality-specific or to be multisensory.
