This book aimed at examining school community members' perceptions towards School Boards as management organs at school level and the extent to which such Boards have contributed to the prevailing trend of secondary education system. School Board is legally responsible for all school operations. Contrary to this, School Boards' contribution to secondary school improvement is minimal because Board members are not involved fully in every issue that occurs at schools. This is because of lack of professional background in education, poor representativeness, lack of commitment and managerial skills among Board members. This book has been designed to help those professionally engaged in secondary education management because of its practical orientation. This book provides direction and guidance to educational leaders, University and Teachers' Colleges' lecturers, tutors and students as well as serving as a valuable reference material for their courses and implementations. The book recommends that School Boards should be well informed about their school responsibilities to be effective in enhancing schools' performance socially and academically for school community members' benefits.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Education - Educational Tests & Measurements, grade: 2.1, , language: English, abstract: This study investigated the effects of distributed leadership practices on the job satisfaction and motivation of teachers for increased academic performance from the perspective of a basic secondary school situated in an urban area of Kazakhstan. It employed the critical paradigm to examine the teachers' motivational levels and job satisfaction as members of the decision-making processes in the case study school. Therefore, this study used five semi-structured interviews on five randomly selected participants who gave the qualitative data analyzed. The coding of the gathered data identified five key themes analyzed in section 4. The findings indicate that the participants unequivocally challenged the hierarchical leadership style witnessed in the country's public schools since they feel that they are oppressive in nature and demean the teachers' opinions leading to teachers' frustration in the teaching profession and poor schools academic performance. Consequently, this study proposes the distributed leadership form to enable teachers to develop a sense of ownership, responsibility, collaboration, and fulfilled life that arises from being part of the decision-making process in their school.

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 8,0, VU University Amsterdam , course: Boards of Directors / Governance / Strategy, language: English, abstract: Despite the growing importance and the current trend of a globalizing economy, relatively little is known about the roles and responsibilities of subsidiary board of directors and how they are influenced by various drivers. This thesis focuses on and investigates the roles and responsibilities of a subsidiary board and which firm-related (internal) and environmental-related(external) drivers could potentially influence these roles. From the existing literature on corporate governance four major roles are derived for the SB, namely a monitoring, advising, internal and external role. Qualitative data from 8 in-depth interviews with board members of a global subsidiary company provided a clear set of responsibilities in line with the four board roles. Furthermore, in this case firm growth, acquisitions and the organization at the parent level are seen as major internal drivers of board responsibilities. Economical downturn, industry changes and technological innovations are seen as critical externaldrivers of board responsibilities in a subsidiary company. Additionally, this thesis shows that in times of economical recession the board tends take on a moremonitoring focused role. Smaller firms and acquisitions lead to a strong internal focus whereas the changes...

Educated for Change?: Muslim Women in the West inserts Muslim women's voice and action into the bifurcated, and otherwise male dominated, relations between the West and the Islamic East. A multilayered, multisite, educationalethnography, Buck and Silver's study takes a novel approach to its feminist charge. Drawing upon thickdescription of refugee women's school experiences in two seemingly distinct locations, Educated for Change?engages the dual nature of schooling as at once a disciplinary apparatus of local, national, and international governance, and paradoxically, a space and process through which school community members wield the power toobserve, deliberate, and act as agents in the creative and willful endeavor of living. In doing so, the text locates formalschooling as a key location at which one can witness the politics of cultural change that emerge when Westernand Islamic communities converge.Following an initial introduction to the ethno-historical formation and dissolution of the Somali postcolonial stateresulting in a prolonged exodus of Somali citizens, the text is divided into two parts. Part One features an examinationof young women's approaches to schooling in the Dadaab refugee camps of northeastern Kenya; Part Two looks at schooling among Somali women resettled in anorthern region of the United States. Each part includes a description of the unique, if interconnected, local factors and policies that give rise to particular forms and endsof s...

Integrated Quality Management System is a model used for appraising teachers in South Africa and has been in use post-1994. The study shed light on the historical development that shaped the current model used for appraising teachers, especially after 1994. IQMS as a model for appraisal was introduced as a direct response after the collapse of the inspection system which was autocratic and highly subjective. Using a case study approach, two schools in Soweto were purposefully selected because of the strong leadership and data was collected from eleven teachers and two principals. The study aims to investigate the role of the school leadership in mediating IQMS at school level. The study employed interviews, questionnaires and document analysis. The research is concerned with the lived experiences of individual teachers in the confines of the environment that they are most comfortable in. This research was taken from the interpretivist position which views the world as constructed by means of multi perspectives. The study argues that the leadership at school level has a prominent role to play in mediating IQMS despite the tensions inherent therein.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Philosophy - Philosophy of the Present, grade: 6.0, University of Idaho, language: English, abstract: This study examined the life of Charles Sumner, an early civil rights, school integration activist in Massachusetts and, later, as the anti-slavery pro education advocate in Congress before and after the Civil War. The study design was historical and integrated the legal Bluebook citation system with the more traditional American Psychological Association (APA) dissertation format, a format departure designed to encourage interdisciplinary research, in this case law and educational leadership. The study focus was on early school integration efforts and the concept of diverse learning communities, a term used to describe Sumner's social justice philosophy. Sumner argued the first school integration case in the United States: Roberts v City of Boston, 1849. While he lost that case, it set in motion abolition sentiment in the north and fueled Sumner's dedication to repealing the Fugitive Slave Act, supporting school integration, and advancing equal rights. As an orator, his outspoken and eloquent vision of integrated public common schools resonant with modern k-12 education. His civil rights influence was important to the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment and his legacy would finally be acknowledged by Chief Justice Earl Warren as dicta in Brown v Board of Education. This is a book about four rural secondary schools of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, a newly independent Central Asianstate of the former USSR. Utilizing case study methods, we describe and discuss how teachers, administrators and studentsare attempting to survive the proclaimed "transition" to democracy and a market economy within their particular schools andcommunities. We view this work primarily as a cultural study of schools and school life, not a work about the national educationsystem. There is in fact a growing volume of other writings on issues and problems in education in Central Asia, some ofwhich we have ourselves contributed to. The focus in this study, however, involves school, individual, and group lives anddynamics in and around the four village schools we studied during 2004 and 2005.Two of the four schools are in Chui Oblast; one in Naryn Oblast, and one in Batken Oblast. One Chui school lieswithin an economically and demographically stable community by Kyrgyz standards; the other school faces more serious economicand migratory issues. Our Naryn school is located in an isolated livestock-breeding region of Kyrgyzstan high in theTien Shan mountains near China. Finally, we describe community and school situations in an agricultural community in thesouth that is characterized by considerable poverty-driven labor migration. Our work involved schools in the small town ofShopokov, and the villages of Tash Dobo, At-Bashy and Ak-Tatyr. These are all actual place...

Providing services such as education, to a society which is either migratory or just beginning to stabilize, and does not value education, particularly for girls, is seemingly difficult. The Tanzanian Maasai people are the perfect example of such a society. Many problems adversely affect their girls' enrolment, regular attendance and performance in school: lack of schools, the distance they must walk to go to school, a dangerous environment to walk through, fees, lack of food, poor standards of education in the schools, lack of classrooms, books, desks, teachers and learning supplies, also the transhumant nature of the society and the customs and culture of the community. All these factors are found to greatly affect both boys and girls, but have the greatest impact on girls. However, the Emusoi Center has provided an approach for keeping these girls in school by involving pastoralist NGOs, churches, government leaders and members of parliament from the pastoralist area. The book highlights the issues of Disability and Rehabilitation among the Santhals and Lodhas tribals living in West Bengal. By studying the life histories of people, the author collects insights and ethnographic data on their living conditions, their daily lifestyle and the impact of their disability on their life. Also, a major component of the study is the rehabilitation of the people involved in the study. The author studies the attitude of the family members and the community members about their disabilities and also the social inclusion of the disabled people among the fellow villagers. Even though the implementation of the plans and policies at the grass root level have to be stressed upon by both the Central and the State Government; the NGOs have to be extremely dedicated to aid people living in extremely remote areas.

Pomson and Schnoor suggest that day school functions as a locus of Jewish identity akin to the Jewish streets or neighborhoods that existed in many major North American cities in the first half of the twentieth century.Back to School began as an ethnographic study of the Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School (DJDS) in Toronto, a private, religiously pluralistic day school that balances its Jewish curriculum with general studies. Drawing on a longitudinal study at DJDS, and against the backdrop of a comparative study of two other Toronto day schools as well as four day schools from the U.S. Midwest, Pomson and Schnoor argue that when parents choose Jewish schools for their children they look for institutions that satisfy not only their children’s academic and emotional needs but also their own social and personal concerns as Jewish adults. The authors found an uncommon degree of involvement and engagement on the part of the parents, as genuine friendships and camaraderie blossomed between parents, faculty, and administrators. In addition, the authors discovered that parents who considered themselves secular Jews were intr...
