The young democracy had to build up a completely new legal system and institutions. At the same time this policy field has already matured on the EU-level as well as in its member states. This paper focuses on the adaptation of Lithuanian environmental policy to the requirements of the EU and employs the concept of Europeanisation to explain changes. Europeanisation, as the term is used in this paper, is concerned with the consequences of European integration for the member and applicant states and politics within them.It is found that especially through the accession process it was easy to 'export' EU rules and principles - firstly, because the pressure to adopt EU legislation was high and secondly, because local elites were ready to take EU templates. After an introduction to the topic the second chapter presents an overview over EU environmental policy, whereas the third chapter focuses on Lithuanian environmental policy and the adaptations through the EU accession process. Chapter four then employs the concept of Europeanisation to explain the i...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, , language: English, abstract: This assessment explores the status of civil society involvement, and especially non-governmental organizations, in environmental governance at local, national and regional level in the Albertine rift region of Africa. Our argument is that civil society should be involved in the five key Areas (among others) which are: information collection and dissemination; Policy development consultation; Policy implementation, Assessment and monitoring and Advocacy for environmental justice. Generally, environmental governance is defined as a concept in political ecology and environmental policy that advocates sustainability as the supreme consideration for managing all human activities political, social and economic. It should be participatory, involving a wide range of stakeholders including government, business and civil society, and emphasizes whole system management.

Will the U.S. follow?, language: English, abstract: Since President Barack Obama is in office, it seems that environmental policy became an important value in the U.S.-politics. After his election in 2008 - he promised "change" in his campaign - many things truly changed. Since President Georg W. Bush did not care too much for the environmental policy, his successors in office have a lot of work to do. For instance, Obama has to reduce the CO2-emissions and to support renewable energy projects like solar energy electric power stations to keep up with the rest of the world. However, most of the time, President Obama had to deal with threatening and tough topics as unemployment, health insurance and worldwide terrorism-in his first term as well as in his second one. This term paper deals with Obama's second term and analyses the steps taken in the environmental politics since his re-election. As an introduction, we will have a closer look at the problems in the U.S.-politics since 2012

This textbook provides an overview of the major environmental policy issues, past and present, and explains the interplay among law, science, and advocacy as related to environmental policymaking in the United States and abroad. Environmental Policy and Public Health examines the main sources of pollution and threats to environmental integrity and explores the consequences of pollution on the environment and the population. Throughout the book, noted environmental policy expert William N. Rom explains the legal basis for environmental action, beginning with the Clean Air Act, the Wilderness Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, and international treaties. In addition to providing information about existing laws, the author presents potential policy alternatives that offer real-world solutions. Comprehensive in scope, the book incorporates developments in law, economics, global warming, and air pollution. Environmental Policy and Public Health covers these topics and also puts an emphasis on wilderness protection. Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,3, University of Southampton, language: English, abstract: Following years of incredible economic development in China, the country today is facing severe, environmental problems. This has been widely acknowledged by Chinese leaders as well as by international scholars. This work presents a detailed analysis of the foreign environmental policy of the People's Republic of China (PRC) for the period from 1972 to the present day. In recent decades, the country's behaviour changed from having an initial policy of refusal to having a more cooperative position within international negotiations, combined with voluntary agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While the central government undertook its first steps towards a green, foreign environmental policy, scholars mainly analysed this changing behaviour from a political or economic standpoint. This work, however, no longer uses 'traditional' viewpoints to explain the changing behaviour, but focuses on social structures that act as drivers for China's cooperative behaviour within global environmental governance structures. Therefore, three hypotheses are developed from a constructivist framework. According to these hypotheses, China's foreign environmental policy is driven by three incentives: its new identity as a 'green' developing country; the emergence and cascade of th...

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 100.00, , course: EMBC - Neoliberalism and Conservation, language: English, abstract: Neoliberalist economic policy is one of the main driving forces in world governance in the 21st Century. Unfortunately, its attributes (individual property rights, unrestrained competition, deregulation, privatisation, short-term profit, risk-propensity, lack of safeguards, globalisation) seem to be completely at odds with environmental sustainability. Neoliberal policy may be the major reason for the failure of governments to form proper environmental protection guarantees for the security of future generations. This is particularly apparent in the context of climate change, where corporate and environmental interests consistently clash, and fisheries, where the commercialization of species may threaten future food security. In this essay, I ask if it is possible to reconcile neoliberalism with marine conservation, with focus on fisheries management. I begin by describing failures to protect natural environments, and the particular characteristics of the marine realm and of neoliberalism that are of relevance in the conflict between economic and environmental interests. I go on to explain the interplay between these factors, and the effect of resulting policies on environmental sustainability. I consider the role of the valuation of natural capital as a major area of debate in terms of t...

A volume in the series: Research in Science Education. Series Editor(s): Dennis W. Sunal, University of Alabama and Emmett L. Wright, Kansas State UniversityThe goal of this volume of Research in Science Education is to examine the relationship between science education policy and practice and the special role that science education researchers play in influencing policy. It has been suggested that the science education research community is isolated from the political process, pays little attention to policy matters, and has little influence on policy. But to influence policy, it is important to understand how policy is made and how it is implemented. This volume sheds light on the intersection between policy and practice through both theoretical discussions and practical examples. This book was written primarily about science education policy development in the context of the highly decentralized educational system of the United States. But, because policy development is fundamentally a social activity involving knowledge, values, and personal and community interests, there are similarities in how education policy gets enacted and implemented around the world. This volume is meant to be useful to science education researchers and to practitioners such as teachers and administrators because it provides information about which aspects of the science education enterprise are affected by state, local, and national policies. It also provides helpful information for researchers and...

The battle against climate change has become predominant for environmental regulators around the globe. The EU is no exception, and the EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is the pinacle of EU environmental policy in this area. Aviation is among the latest industry sectors to be included in the Emission Trading Scheme, and while the Commission strive to produce effective and comprehensive policy on the subject, the EU's mode of regulatory co-optition pitches industry and environmental organizations against each other in the struggle for influence over the policy process. This book takes a closer look at the arguments of key stakeholders in the policy process pertaining to the inclusion of aviation in the EU ETS, and examines why certain stakeholders seemingly are able to influence policy development more successfully than others.

Therefore, in this book he sets out to understand the role that economics plays in international environmental policy-making. He considers both the economic factors and the non-economic factors which are at play in such policy-making, and then considers whether both economic and environmental objectives can be jointly achieved in order to preserve biodiversity.

While the melting of the ice or a slightly rising sea level does not have huge economical impact yet, there are already some natural catastrophes like the hurricanes Katrina or Sandy and storm floods in Japan after the earthquake in 2011 that influence global economy. This essay portrays different causes of climate change (such as anthropological and natural reasons) to then uncover the effects of climate change on global economy. Also, effects of actions to regulate climate change on global economy will be discussed.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: A, University of London (School of Advanced Studies, Institute of Commonwealth Studies), language: English, abstract: In the UK, successive governments since 2010 have positioned unconventional fossil fuels at the centre of their energy policy in spite of overwhelming scientific evidence that the planet cannot sustain the current level of fossil fuel consumption and that anthropogenic ecological degradation is driving us towards an extinction-level event. They have continued to push forwards with it despite fierce public opposition and mounting evidence of violations of human rights due to its negative ecological consequences and the way the police handle the continuous demonstrations against it.Through a qualitative study of the policing tactics used at anti-fracking protests; I explore how UK politics and policy-making have moved away from the foundational ideas of democracy (a representative government to protect and promote the wellbeing of the many) to an institutional system that exists to ensure the wealth and power of the few - a hegemonic elite, in Gramscian terms. I argue that the logic of neoliberal capitalism has given rise to structures of power and policy choices are resulting in human rights violations and making it almost impossible to adopt environmental policy options that will prevent ecological destruction.

Under Superfund legislation, the innocent landowner defense has led to the use of environmental site assessments (ESAs) as a common practice in the acquisition and financing of commercial property. The objective of this inquiry was to examine the effects of environmental risks and liabilities as disclosed in ESAs in the acquisition and financing of a set of commercial property transactions in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. The findings suggest that transaction prices are not reduced in the structuring of risk and liability. In addition, financing is likely to revert to seller financing when environmental risk and liability are present. Furthermore, the Superfund liability provisions have led to the mitigation of environmental degradation in the acquiring of commercial properties with minor environmental problems while those with more substantial problems may not be acquired or financed. Policy implications are posited addressing brownfield redevelopment issues. Commercial real estate brokers, attorneys, and lenders; and professionals in environmental law, policy, planning, and economics should find this research useful and enlightening.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: BA degree, , language: English, abstract: Although a relative better political environment had been created with the coming of EPRDF, many NGOs have not yet shifted their policy objective towards advocacy. Majority of local NGOs are still either relief or development oriented regarding their policy objectives. They are fear of taking up policy advocacy, rule of law, human rights, criticism and opposition to state policies and practices. This is partly explained by the fact that many NGOs restored to opportunism or subservience to the government. That is, they make political calculations deemed necessary to ensure survival. In other words, most NGOs pretend not to engage in sensitive issues that may antagonize with the government. In simple terms, they rather conform to center of power and prefer to maintain personal and institutional interests (Kassahun, 2002:124). However, after 1991 a few local NGOs emerged and centered their objective on promoting the respect for the rule of law, protecting and monitoring human rights and enhancing civil awareness through various strategies. The Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO), Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association (EWLA), Society for the Advancement of Human Rights Education (EAHRE) are some the examples ,which entertain such objectives. These reforms helped the country to achieve an immense economic upturn with annual growth rates of almost ten percent and thus made China an ever more important actor on the international stage of politics. The United States strongly support China's economic development by granting it permanent Normal Trade Relations, for example, and investing directly in China's manufacturing sector. But whereas China has been liberalizing its market, using American interests to gain profits, it largely maintains its defensive and rejecting attitude about changing its human rights situation. There are controversial opinions about how the United States should respond towards China human rights situation. In order to make aware of the stagnated situation of the human rights issue in U.S. China policy, this paper explores how the Clinton administration handled human rights in China policy and looks at the role of human rights in the Bush jr. administration's policy towards China.

In the context of the worldwide concern with the sustainability of current forms of development, business managers are being required to engage with environmental policy more creatively than in the past. At the broadest level, business managers are being advised to embrace regulation as a source of competitive advantage rather than viewing it simply as a compliance cost and administrative burden. Irrespective of whether managers accept that "going beyond compliance" is a stimulus for innovation, business managers frequently face a policy environment in which choices need to be made over how policy agendas should be responded to. Contemporary policy approaches may mandate demonstration of best practice, without de ning what constitutes best practice or use policy approaches that give the option of "paying for pollution" or investing in clean technology. Frequently, the argument is made that there are reputational gains to being a first mover and putting the organization ahead of regulation, but the implication can be considerable upfront investment for uncertain returns. Against this context, this book provides a guide to the new world of environmental regulation for managers within business and students with a particular interest in understanding how environmental regulation works.

The World in 2000 Years (1878) is a work of science fiction based on economics. In the future it describes, the primary objective of economic policy is the prevention of the accumulation of money into the hands of relatively few individuals. While making money remains an objective, it is subsidiary to the determination to steer it in the right direction and redistribute it in such a way as to give every member of society the opportunity to earn a living free of hardship and strife.Whereas readers in 1878 could only make a simple comparison between their own world and the world of 3878 as it was glimpsed by the hero, contemporary readers can make a third comparison with the world of 2011, which adds an additional perspective of considerable significance to anyone interested in the future of our society.

This intermediate-level undergraduate textbook in environmental economics builds on the microeconomics courses students take in their first year. It intentionally does not survey the whole field or present every possible topic. Instead, there is a clear focus on the theory of environmental policy and its practical applications. Most of the applied parts of the book deal with the economics of environmental policy in the European Union and in the United States. The book combines basic environmental economic analysis, such as the internalization of externalities, with recent developments in this field, including induced technical change and coalition theory. Moreover, topics from daily policy debates such as global warming are put into economic perspective. This is done in an intelligible form for advanced undergraduate students of economics, business administration, and related fields. "[This] book illustrates the hazards facing governments who attempt to compromise established non-Aboriginal interests (however diverse) in Australia and this makes it a worthy contribution to the literature on government in Australia." ---Australian Journal of Political Science"In this interesting political history, Ronald T. Linny examines the mining industry's efforts from 1984 to 1987 to influence public policy concerning land rights of native peoples under the Australian Labor Party government of Prime Minister Bob Hawke. Libby provides a detailed case study of interest group politics in a federal, multiparty parliamentary system with weak parties, focusing on the tactics, strategy, and impact of the mining industry on land policy... A gold mine of raw data, this book contributes to the literature of interest group competition as it affects factional struggle in political parties." ---Journal of PoliticsPrevious studies of the mining industry's influence on Australian policy have been forced to rely on informed speculation about the industry's actions. Hawke's Lawis the first to benefit from unrestricted access to industry sources and documentation, including mining-industry archives and interviews with top executives. It is also the only definitive study of the Labor Party government's long-promised attempt to formulate national Aboriginal rights legislation. Ronald T. Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,0, University of Potsdam (Lehrstuhl für Internationale Politik), language: English, abstract: The problem of deforestation and forest degradation is currently highly prominent on the international agenda. In September 2001, the East Asia Ministerial Conference on Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) took place in Bali, Indonesia and adopted the Bali Declaration. The participating countries committed themselves to strengthen their efforts in combating illegal logging and other forest crimes. In June 2010 the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) published a review of FLEG progress in Asia and the Pacific, keeping the issue a priority in global environmental governance. Although the region of Southeast Asia accommodates only 5% of the world's forests, it accounts for nearly 25% of the global forest loss over the past decade, whereas illegal logging is the major cause (World Bank 2010). Therefore this region is closely watched by the international community regarding progress towards sustainable forest management (SFM). The practice of illegal logging leads to an estimated annual loss of US$ 15 billion in developing countries. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) recognizes the importance of FLEG as a way to hinder these huge economic losses as well as the environmental and social consequences. The improvement of the region's reputat...

A concise and engaging overview of endocrine disruption phenomena that brings complex concepts within the reach of non-specialists For most of the last decade, the science of endocrine disruption has evolved with more definitive evidence of its damaging potential to health and environment. This book lists the major environmental chemicals of concern and their mechanism of endocrine disruption including remedial measures for them. Divided into three parts, Endocrine Disruptors in the Environment begins with an overview of the endocrine system and endocrine disruptors, discussing their salient features and presenting a historical perspective of endocrine disruption phenomena. It then goes on to cover hormone-signaling mechanisms, followed by various broad classes of putative endocrine disruptors, before introducing readers to environmental epigenetic modifications. Part two of the book focuses on removal processes of various EDCs by biotic and abiotic transformation/degradation. The last section consists of four chapters embracing themes on finding solutions to environmental EDCs—including their detection, regulation, replacement, and remediation. Endocrine Disruptors in the Environment is the first book to detail the endocrine effects of several known environmental contaminants and their mechanism of endocrine disruption. Additionally, it: Covers both the chemistry and biology of endocrine disruption and compiles almost all the known endocrine disrupting environmental chemicals and their mechanisms of toxicity Addresses policy and regulatory issues relevant to EDCs including scientific uncertainty and precautionary policy Brings forth the use of Green Chemistry principles in avoiding endocrine disruption in the designing and screening for safer chemicals and remediation of the EDCs in aquatic environment Includes a useful glossary of technical terms, a list of acronyms, topical references, and a subject index Endocrine Disruptors in the Environment is an ideal book for environmental chemists and endocrine toxicologists, developmental biologists, endocrinologists, epidemiologists, environmental health scientists and advocates, and regulatory officials tasked with risk assessment in environment and health areas.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: A, The American University, Washington, DC (School of International Service), language: English, abstract: Sustainable development goals (SDGs) and households' solid waste management (HSWM) in the Republic of Benin, West Africa is the focus of this research. It explicitly investigates fermentable (organic) waste. Drawing on qualitative research, it argues that households' waste management could be a driver in the achievement of the SDGs. It briefly examines the international context of waste policy establishment and the framework of internationally supported waste project in the Republic of Benin (RB or Benin) in order to demonstrate the importance of socio-cultural factors in the waste sector. Through the lenses of urban political ecology and political ecology of waste theories, it explains how the perception and the treatment of waste in pre-colonial Benin might have changed over time, compared to postcolonial Benin. Inspired by one of the main challenges of the 21st century, achieving a worldwide sustainable development, the paper suggests a different approach of perceiving and treating waste in general and organic waste in particular. It argues that a community-based approach based on cooperatives could be the answer to the waste issue, but could also provide a canvas for the successful and inclusive achievement of the SDGs in Benin.

Master's Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, grade: 2,0 (B), University of Heidelberg (Institute for Politcal Science), course: International Cooperation and Organisations, 24 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: IntroductionThe emergence of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1947 marked a substantial turning point in the American trade policy from protectionism to free trade. High tariff barriers and the absence of free trade were seen as one of the main reasons for the Great Depression in the 1920s. To prevent such international economic crisis in the future the United States of America pushed forward negotiations about international economic cooperation that led to the GATT. Until today the imitation of the GATT, the WTO, is - together with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank - the most important international economic cooperation.Cooperation between states only comes into being if certain requirements are fulfilled. The different theories of international relations aim to explain under which circumstances such international cooperation emerges. Thereby each of these theories is based on different assumptions, i.e. about state behavior or the shape of the international system. The central research question of this paper is how good these assumptions of different theories fit the reality. The objective is therefore to test if and how theories of internatio...

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, , course: US Foreign Policy, International Relations in the Caspian Sea Region, language: English, abstract: The New Great Game in the Caspian Sea Region received moderate attention from scholars following the collapse of the Soviet Union because it resembled the continuation of rivalry between Washington and Moscow. For the eight Caspian republics, the discovery of vast oil and gas deposits was the key to securing the newly independent states' sovereignty away from Moscow's control toward integration with Europe and the United States. This thesis analyses the US' treatment of the Caspian Sea Region between 1991 and 2001, in order to measure whether its policies were crafted according to Realist tenets in formulating policy designed to advance its security. The historical record seen through Offensive Realism presents evidence that US foreign policy was governed by principles not balance of power considerations, led by the false notion that democratic Russia would act in accordance with US goals. Intent on fostering democracy in Russia the United States denied the competitive nature of international politics, refusing to criticize abuses by Moscow in the region and failing to intervene when US interests were marginalised. The US failed to prevent Russia from refashioning conditions conducive to the reabsorption of the Caucasus and ...

This book describes the difficulties faced by educators who teach Natural Science in Grade 6 using isiXhosa mother tongue instruction. The author has investigated how educators dealt with Natural Science terminology when teaching. The sample consisted of 10 schools in Gugulethu township, Cape Town. The author used a focus group interview of 10 educators from 10 schools in Gugulethu. The author unpacked the issues of teaching Natural Science using mother tongue instruction, as it was the policy of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). The author compared educational policy in other neighboring countries such as Swaziland and Mozambique, to South Africa and Norway. Therefore, recommendations pose a number of challenges to those committed in the implementation of mother tongue instruction in the Western Cape schools.

Many of the frontiers of environmental economics research are at the interface of large-scale and long-term environmental change with national and global economic systems. This is also where some of the most of challenging environmental policy issues occur. Volume 3 of the Handbook of Environmental Economics provides a synthesis of the latest theory on economywide and international environmental issues and a critical review of models for analyzing those issues. It begins with chapters on the fundamental relationships that connect environmental resources to economic growth and long-run social welfare. The following chapters consider how environmental policy differs in a general-equiIibrium setting from a partial-equilibrium setting and in a distorted economy from a perfect economy. The volume closes with chapters on environmental issues that cross or transcend national borders, such as trade and the environment, biodiversity conservation, acid rain, ozone depletion, and global climate change. The volume provides a useful reference for not only natural resource and environmental economists but also international economists, development economists, and macroeconomists. The Kosovo Conflict and the surrounding events throughout the Balkans have repeatedly demonstrated that the European Union still lacks the political, judicial and military competencies in its collective approaches to security and foreign policy. Since its inception, the EU had been, and continues to be greatly dependent on its partner and ally, the United States. Hence, the EU was characterized with the Capability-Expectations Gap (CEP), stating that the international environment and the EU itself expect higher outcomes than it is actually capable of delivering. Consequently, the incidents within mainland Europe were accompanied by continuous efforts to improve their Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). In recent years the cases of water shortages, pollution and flood/drought damages steadily increased in numbers. This development is caused by both a large population and a rapidly developing economy. Although China significantly improved its water and wastewater infrastructure, its water shortage problem is worsening year by year. The Chinese government tries to counter this misbalance and insistently pursues an environmentally sustainable development policy. Its countermeasures include management model reforms, Private-Sector-Participation (PSP) projects and the support of new technology development and application. According to the 11th Five-Year-Plan, more than 140 billion Euros will be spent on environmental projects and campaigns before 2010. These reforms have unleashed a wave of optimism in China‟s water market and created great market opportunities for investors. Significant amounts of new water infrastructures are to be built, and the operation and maintenance of all existing and newly built municipal water and wastewater treatment plants have been or will be transferred to authorized enterprises. However, these opportunities are not without risk. Investors are particularly skeptical abo...

The future of any nation depends largely on the quality of its youth. Nigeria established a Youth Policy in 2001, to be a guide towards achieving youth development in the country. However, the condition of the youth in the country has remained appalling. The need to review the policy process of the National Youth Development Policy (NYP) as an instrument for addressing the problems of the youth in the Fourth Republic engendered the writing of this work. With the aid of Systems Theory of David Easton and using the traditional method of data collection and analysis, the book reviews government's efforts towards actualizing the goals of this policy. The book is arranged in five chapters. Chapter one lays the foundation of the book. Chapter two is the literature, theoretical framework and conceptual clarifications. Chapter three gives the historical evolution of the NYP of Nigeria. Chapter four reviews the implementation of the Youth Policy using thematic areas like education, etc. Chapter five is the conclusion. The book is recommended for students and teachers of politics, public policy and government, policy makers, NGOs and the general public as it concerns the entire society.

Since then, but particularly for the last ten years this so-called „Look East Policy" has grown to a strong and multifaceted partnership that constitutes a major component of Indian foreign policy today. The principal purpose of this thesis is to evaluate India's motives for its strong interactions with Southeast Asia. The most common approach among academics to explain India's Look East Policy follows a liberal understanding of International Relations. Liberals argue that both, India and the Southeast Asian countries want to exploit complementarities in their economic and social structures: This thesis however, follows a neorealist understanding of International Relations by arguing that the Look East Policy is primarily a strategy of the Indian government to counterbalance the growing Chinese influence in Southeast Asia: Due to the geographic closeness of the Asia Pacific region to the Indian subcontinent, China's presence there is particularly worrisome for India. The past decade saw heightened policy activism in the field of reading at both the federal level and across virtually all 50 states. Initially sparked by disagreements about methods for teaching children to read, the so-called "reading wars" stirred heated debates on a variety of issues: levels and trends of reading achievement, pedagogy, standards and assessment, and education equity, among others. Embedded within these debates were the political agendas of state executives and legislatures, the interests of advocacy groups, and the ideologies of reading professionals, which were collectively shaping state reading policy development. Drawing primarily on interviews with 366 policy actors from nine states, this book presents a comprehensive investigation of the state reading policy domain employing multiple theoretical frameworks and research methods. Using social network analysis, the authors examined the interplay among a plethora of policy actors embedded in reading policy networks. They explored in depth policy actors' divergent beliefs on key reading-related issues, the causal stories told, and the policy solutions proposed. In addition, they examined the variety of lobbying tactics that interest groups utilized to gain influence over the policymaking process and to advance their policy agenda. As the most significant research endeavor in the area of state reading policy to date, this cross-state comparative study sheds light on the multifaceted nature and th...

After years of support for dictatorial regimes, United States foreign policy towards Latin America has changed since the 1980s. The issues that now dominate the agenda are the promotion of democracy in order to provide an environment suitable for liberal market economies and the War on Drugs that became the paramount Latin American issue in the American public perception as well as in the National Security Council. This shift of actual policies represents a continuation of the underlying goal of securing US hegemony in the Americas. With reference to Antonio Gramsci' s concept of hegemony, the author links the War on Drugs, counterinsurgency against left-wing guerrilla groups and democracy promotion, and presents a new framework for the understanding of US politics towards Latin America. This book is written for students and academics of Political Science who are looking for a fresh perspective on the War on Drugs. It may also appeal to students of American Studies and individuals interested in US foreign policy in the Americas.

Adopting an integrative approach, this text covers both conventional ecological issues as well as cross-disciplinary investigations that combine facets of microbiology, ecology, environmental science and engineering, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Focusing primarily on single-cell forms of prokaryotes – and cellular forms of algae, fungi, and protozoans – this book enables readers to gain insight into the fundamental methodologies for the characterization of microorganisms in the biosphere. The authors draw from decades of experience to examine the environmental processes mediated by microorganisms and explore the interactions between microorganisms and higher life forms. Highly relevant to modern readers, this book examines topics including the ecology of microorganisms in engineered environments, microbial phylogeny and interactions, microbial processes in relation to environmental pollution, and many more. Now in its second edition, this book features updated references and major revisions to chapters on assessing microbial communities, community relationships, and their global impact. New content such as effective public communication of research findings and advice on scientific article review equips readers with practical real-world skills. Explores the activities of microorganisms in specific environments with case studies and actual research data Highlights how prominent microbial biologists address significant microbial ecology issues Offers guidance on scientific communication, including scientific presentations and grant preparation Includes plentiful illustrations and examples of microbial interactions, community structures, and human-bacterial connections Provides chapter summaries, review questions, selected reading lists, a complete glossary, and critical thinking exercises Environmental Microbiology and Microbial Ecology is an ideal textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in biology, microbiology, ecology, and environmental science, while also serving as a current and informative reference for microbiologists, cell and molecular biologists, ecologists, and environmental professionals.
