Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne (Englisch), course: Problems in Second Language Acquisition, language: English, abstract: This term paper will focus on the discussion of the putative maturational constraints for second language acquisition. The age factor is an aspect of first and second language acquisition research which has engendered very much controversy. In the discussion about age-related effects on language acquisition, one can find disagreements as to both the facts and to their possible explanations. The different points of view range from the notion that young learners are in all aspects of language learning more efficient and achieve better results, to the contrary position that older learners are the better learners. In this paper, four of the positions concerning the age factor, which have been listed by Singleton, will be presented because they provide a good overview of the different views on this topic and the respective evidence belonging to them. Many of the differences in the results of various studies are due to the differences in how the results are elicited. The experimental design plays an important role for the outcomes.

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, University of Debrecen (Regnum-M Educational Co. / University of Debrecen), course: English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, language: English, abstract: It is obvious that second language acquisition is a very inevitable phenomenon in language learning procedure, hence there is a whole library of books dealing with SLA. Contemporary findings (Pléh, 2010) have also showed that LA is one of the most important processes in our life, determining the whole procedure of language learning, not only in the case of second language, but also in the case of our mother tongue. Moreover, the whole process includes memorizing things, conceptualization, connecting cognitive information and eventual accuracy in the use of language. Interestingly enough, contemporary findings have also proved (Deb K. Roy et al., 2002) that first language acquisition begins even before the birth of the child, which means that the adaptation to the new circumstances and verbalcommunication starts in the mother's uterus. These new researches and our devotion to medical disciplines1 have made us compose an essay on the biological factors of Second Language Acquisition. No doubt, biological and neurobiological factors are very severely important parts of LA procedures, however, they are not really put into the focus of linguistic experts. The reason for this might be traced in several things...

The understanding and discussion of these theories and views will not only shed light on the essence of writing and its place in the whole process of second language acquisition, but also give more insight into the second language teaching methods these theories advocate, especially composition teaching methods. Accordingly, this book investigated the effect of reading model essays and writing practice on Moroccan EFL students’ persuasive writing performance. The major purpose behind this study was to compare the impact of reading and writing practice on the development of Moroccan students’ argumentative writing performance and shed more light on the reading writing relationship

Mémoire (de fin d'études) de l'année 2015 dans le domaine Anglais - Pédagogie, Didactique, Linguistique, note: 16, Université de Picardie Jules Verne, langue: Français, résumé: This work presents a study of second language acquisition within the school environment. Specialists in foreign language pedagogy and didactics promote inductive learning of grammar which is mainly based on first language acquisition. Yet the mechanisms of a child's natural acquisition process cannot be borrowed by adolescents or adults when learning the second language (L2). It appears to be impossible to copy the naturallearning process when, as adolescents or adults, we are studying or acquiring our second language in an "artificial" way. Moreover, second language exposure is short and limited by the margins of a fifty-minute lesson and age appears to be a remarkable site of difference between L1 and L2 acquisition. As a consequence it may be better to adopt a contrastive approach in order to develop and acquire the language skills necessary to communicate. Learners should adopt a metalinguistic approach involving the awareness and control of linguistic components of language in order to avoid using what is commonly called a "formulaic language". This research paper will analyse and comment upon some linguistic theories regarding second language acquisition to reflect critically on common teaching practices. My probationary year as a teacher in high school was, for me, th...

(Proverb)Proverbs usually have an element of truth. The German speakers will certainly also know the German equivalent 'Was Hänschen nicht lernt, lernt Hans nimmermehr.' Do these proverbs also apply to the acquisition of a second language? Are young learners trees that 'must be bent' before they are too old to reach a certain language proficiency? In first and second language research, the concept of a 'critical period' respectively of a 'sensitive period' was developed to explain probable advantages of children in the process of language acquisition. The aim of this term paper is to find out whether there is a sensitive period for second language learning and to explore possible explanatory approaches.Within this research, the 'Critical Period Hypothesis' (CPH) represents the major focus. According to this hypothesis, "there is a period during which language acquisition is easy and complete (i.e. native-speaker ability is achieved) and beyond which it is difficult and typically incomplete" (ELLIS, 1997: 67). This means, it is assumed that language learners must begin at an early age to learn a language in order to reach native-like...

An experimental study determines the acquisition of English language by the speakers of two, syntactically un-identical, languages. The transfer of the grammatical elements from their native language at end-state (near native competence) indicates that the Native language plays a critical role while acquiring second language and its effect, no-matter trivial, exists.

Examination Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2 (B), University of Cologne (English Seminar), 135 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "How do we learn language ?" is both a very interesting and a very complex question. It has fascinated people for centuries to find an answer to that question, but so far only competing theories have come up. In 1965, Noam Chomsky invented the theory of a Universal Grammar underlying the structures of all languages and that babies were born with innate knowledge of this Universal Grammar. The idea has revolutionised language acquisition research. But only in the 1970s did researchers start to look at the acquisition of second languages as well as the first language acquisition. Since then, studies, theories and new research fields have sprung up at an amazing rate. In this essay, I will try to give an account on what second language acquisition research has found out so far and in what way these findings could probably be applied to improve the way pupils learn English in Germany. It will be necessary to differentiate between naturalistic and instructed language learning. Naturalistic language learning takes place if people are not explicitly taught the foreign language, but rather learn it by trying to communicate in it. Most studies relating to naturalistic language acquisition observe immigrants' children who do not yet go to school. Instruc...

This book presents an in-depth investigation of the developmental path of English as a second language (ESL) acquisition. Understanding the natural acquisition process benefits syllabus construction and task designs in language education as formal instruction can be more efficient if the learner is developmentally ready. However, a majority of second language acquisition (SLA) studies are cross-sectional, and studies observing second language development over time, particularly those for more than one year, are very rare. This book, based on a two-year longitudinal study of a Japanese primary school child learning English in Australia, explores the staged development of English morphology and syntax within the framework of Processability Theory (PT), which is one of the current major SLA approaches. The research in this book provides valuable evidence supporting the PT hypotheses. It also addresses the issues of the relationship between morphological and syntactic development. The findings in this book contribute to the development of SLA studies as well as ESL/EFL teaching. This book is recommended for all in the field of SLA, child language, and ESL/EFL education.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (Institute for English Linguistics), course: Second Language Acquisition, 23 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: One of the central questions that SLA has tried to answer is why learners of a non-native language (L2) evince such a high degree of interindividual variation in their final attainment relative to the L2 components and skills they have acquired. In order to offer a satisfactory response to this key issue, SLA researchers have posited the existence of a set of individual factors of a very different nature, such as aptitude, motivation, attitude, personality, and intelligence, among others, that might explain such variation. However, one of the most obvious potential explanations for the lack of success of L2 learners compared to L1 learners is that the acquisition of a foreign language begins at a later age than that of the mother tongue does. Thus, it has been prevalently assumed that age itself is a predictor of second language proficiency. This paper focuses on research which has been carried out on maturational constraints for SLA and hereby tries to find answers to various questions concerning age as a factor in SLA.

Examination Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Stuttgart (Institut für Linguistik - Abteilung Anglistik), language: English, abstract: Language is an endless source of amazement. Language acquisition, namely the process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive, produce and use language, is a crucial matter to face for any theory of language. A strong approach about the acquisition of language should be able to provide an answer as to how children break into language and how language knowledge emerges and develops. The aim of this thesis is to introduce and discuss the most impacting approaches to language acquisition up to date and evaluate them against empirical data. On the one hand, some scholars, among them the developmental psychologists Jean Piaget and Michael Tomasello have been arguing that the acquisition of language is implemented via domain-neutral cognitive mechanisms and unspecific, general learning processes: such approaches reject both the idea of a language-specific ability and the hypothesis of any innate component in language acquisition. I will first discuss Jean Piaget's ideas and afterwards Michael Tomasello's recent elaboration of Piaget's constructivism.

This book discusses the principles of the Montessori Method and Maria Montessori's views of language acquisition in comparison with existing linguistic theories and empirical studies. It also provides a detailed description of the Montessori materials specifically designed for helping children in the acquisition of the written language exploring the late Italian educator's theoretical concepts behind the acquisition of early writing and reading. By giving descriptions, pictures and examples of how the materials would be introduced to children, the author shows how Montessori's hands-on approach would be applied in a classroom setting.

The influence of a learner's mother tongue on their second language acquisition has been heavily discussed for decades. While at the beginning the theory of negative language transfer enjoyed great popularity, nowadays linguists are more skeptical about it. Indeed, as many studies point out, there are numerous influences besides that of a native tongue; however, we should not refuse it completely. Our mother tongue may influence us without our even knowing that, and this is reflected in how we shape our ideas into words, phrases and sentences. If such influence is negative, then we can communicate a message which either sounds odd, or is not understandable to a native speaker at all. This book examines the Slovak-English lexical interference, aiming to identify main problematic areas in the discourse of Slovak students.

It examines not only the phenomena in regards to the process of language learning but also investigates the implications of crosslinguistic influence for classroom teaching practices. Specifically, the book focuses on the acquisition of German by adults whose first language is English and the effect of specific English syntactic patterns on the acquisition of related structures in German. The book provides a comprehensive overview of developments in theoretical understandings of crosslinguistic influence, and shows how these understandings have influenced foreign language teachers' classroom practices over time. One teaching method is empirically tested with the results supporting an approach to foreign/second language pedagogy which accounts for crosslinguistic influence in its design.

This is all the more fascinating since this process is quite rapid, and the successive stages for the progressive acquisition of the native language follow a quite similar chronology across languages." (Dominey et al. 2004: 122)What the linguist Peter Dominey here states describes people's fascination about language, specifically language acquisition. Both are highly complex frameworks whose investigation, indeed, can be regarded as an inexhaustible enterprise. Nevertheless, research has been willing to face that challenge, and, over several decades, linguists have been trying to find out how exactly children acquire their native language. Children all over the world, regardless of language and culture, eventually acquire their mother tongue. However, the question how exactly children learn language has not been answered unanimously. One of the interesting observations in language is that adults change their speech while talking to children - a phenomenon referred to as Child-Directed Speech (CDS). Why does this adjustment take place? Changing one's own speech in conversation with children seems to occur quite intuitively and can be observed in any situation of everyday life in whic...

Seeing that the conceptof language transfer has received diverse weight in the history of second language acquisition(SLA), the present account illuminates the issue anew, with a specific linguistic concern.Inversion structures, though not canonical, are very frequent in the German language, whereas the English language offers comparatively rare environments which trigger or allowfor inversions. As previous studies found, language transfer, in regard to word order, emerged when the native language exhibited flexible word order, and the language to belearnt, in contrast, had a rather fixed one. This gave rise to the assumption that Germannatives would generally accept subject-verb inversion in declarative sentences in English, even if for a native speaker of English the structure would not be acceptable. Thus, thesecond language learners are expected to score high on the acceptability rate for themajority of instances of inversion in English, since the German equivalents of the test itemsare basically quite acceptable in German.

It distinguishes humans from animals and gives us the opportunity to pass along knowledge and memories. At the same time language is one of the most complex things our human brain has to master. The present research compared the outcomes of Dual Language and Traditional Bilingual approaches on the acquisition of English, and the development of first language literacy for second language learners. The design used a two-way mixed factor analysis of variance, with groups (Dual Language and Transitional Bilingual) as the between subjects factor, and time of testing (pretest and posttest) as the within-subjects factor. The dependent variables included student performance on the ECLAS (an English proficiency assessment) and on EL SOL (a Spanish proficiency assessment. A one-way comparison between groups using scores from the NYSESLAT exam was conducted along with a descriptive analysis of NYSESLAT scores. Results of the study revealed an increase in language acquisition and oral literacy skills in English for both groups. The findings also indicated there was growth in most domains of native language oral and literacy skills. The outcomes further suggested that the Dual Language approach was more effective than Transitional Bilingual Education in the attainment of English proficiency for second language learners.

In the field of language acquisition, there is an ongoing debate about the differences and similarities between L1 and L2 acquisition. Some scholars, on the one hand, believe that there is a fundamental difference and that access to Universal Grammar (UG) is only available to L1 learners, whereas L2 learners fall back on general language processing strategies. Opponents of this hypothesis, on the other hand, believe that L2 learners still have access to UG in different degrees, from partial to full access. This issue has not been resolved to date. In this book, focusing on German word order and agreement phenomena, the Fundamental Difference Hypothesis will be investigated through analysing and comparing the morphological and syntactic developmental paths of two types of language acquisition: German as a first language (L1) by children and German as a second language (L2) by adult Italian L1 speakers. The findings show that there is firm basis to the claim that there is at least no fundamental difference between the developmental paths in L1 and L2 acquisition.

Optional Infinitive (OI) stage introduces a period in early language acquisition process through which finite and non-finite forms co-occur in similar contexts. With this regard, this book highlights the comprehension and production of OI features including application of infinitive markers, subject-verb agreement, and tense markers by Persian lower and upper intermediate EFL learners. The work aimed at exploring the effect of learners' proficiency level and L1 transfer on the acquisition of these features. Moreover, it attempted to apply its results to Truncation and Unique Checking Constraint as two major models proposed to explain OI features through a critical view. The results can provide second language teachers and syllabus designers with pedagogical feedback and helpful information on the related features attributed to each proficiency level.

Motivated by the need to bring together researchers involved in the acquisition, learning and teaching of the Croatian language and foreign languages to learners at lower elementary level, the recurring scientific conferences Children and Languages Today were established in 2001. At the time the Croatian academic community was short of a conference that was dedicated entirely to critical thinking and the exchange of research findings, outcomes and experience in these particular study areas. As it turns out, Children and Languages Today has served as an incentive for other conferences and meetings in Croatia that continue to promote research in the fields of first and second language acquisition of young learners.Children and Languages Today: First and Second Language Literacy Development is the outcome of the conference held in 2017 at the Faculty of Education, University of Osijek. It is a collection of papers by experts on a wide range of topics that include developing literacy in teaching first and second languages and encompassing different fields of science and expertise, such as children's literature, bilingualism, metaphor usage, translation, vocabulary, narrative and orthography. This book hopes to shed light on and open up an array of questions in the area of literacy development.

Undoubtedly, it seems that vocabulary acquisition is considered as a crucial issue in second language acquisition. Furthermore, it should be taken into consideration that learning a foreign or second language requires the acquisition of thousands of words. Accordingly, language learners look for effective ways to increase opportunities for retaining new words in long-term memory, but they often complain forgetting new words soon after learning. On the other hand, task is seen as a piece of classroom work which involves learners in comprehending, manipulating, producing or interacting in the target language while their attention is principally focus on meaning rather than form (Nunan, 1991). Therefore, 50 subjects were chosen as experimental n=25 and control group n=25, then, three tasks were applied to experimental group as reading comprehension by using context, dictionary, and marginal glosses, respectively. Having collected data, analysis of covariance was applied for data coding. Based on the hierarchy efficiency in the development of vocabulary retention the efficiency of contextual task was verified more than other tasks.

Task-based language teaching is one of the burgeoning areas of research in the field of second language acquisition. Over the past two decades, many studies have been conducted to investigate different aspects of TBLT and their effects on language learners' learning as well as task performance(Ellis, 2003, 2005; Skehan and Foster, 1999; Robinson, 2007). A review of the studies conducted on tasks reveled that there is a gap in the literature on the effects of generic features of tasks and their possible effects on learners’ performance and it is one of the rarely explored areas of research in TBLT.Therefore, the present study was an attempt to investigate the ways in which generic features of tasks can influence language learners' task performance in terms of three linguistic domains of accuracy, fluency, and complexity. The findings can be helpful for second language acquisition researchers, task and syllabus designers, and language teachers.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar), course: HS First Language Acquisition, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Most of the concepts and theories explaining how native languages are acquired go back to three different approaches put forward by Burrhus Federic Skinner, Noam Chomsky and Jean Piaget, either by using their ideas as a starting point or by rejecting them and formulating a new or altered Hypothesis. This paper will try to present those three basic theories, also taking into account the contexts out of which they emerged, as to fully understand linguistic, like any other scientific, views and theories, they have always to be evaluated with respect to the scientific and cultural background they appeared in.First it will try to show how Skinners concept of 'verbal behavior' with respect to language acquisition emerged in the development of behaviouristic theories. This will be followed by Chomsky's criticism of Skinner's ideas, leading to his own theory of language and language acquisition, which will be presented. Jean Piaget offers a cognitive approach to the question. His view will be described before comparing nativist and cognitivist ideas, concerning the points whether or not innate structures exist and in how far linguistic and cognitive development are interrelated, taking the opposed views of Piaget ...

The Handbook of Technology and Second Language Teaching and Learning presents a comprehensive exploration of the impact of technology on the field of second language learning. The rapidly evolving language-technology interface has propelled dramatic changes in, and increased opportunities for, second language teaching and learning. Its influence has been felt no less keenly in the approaches and methods of assessing learners' language and researching language teaching and learning. Contributions from a team of international scholars make up the Handbook consisting of four parts: language teaching and learning through technology; the technology-pedagogy interface; technology for L2 assessment; and research and development of technology for language learning. It considers how technology assists in all areas of language development, the emergence of pedagogy at the intersection of language and technology, technology in language assessment, and major research issues in research and development of technologies for language learning. It covers all aspects of language including grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, speaking, pragmatics, and intercultural learning, as well as new pedagogical and assessment approaches, and new ways of conceiving and conducting research and development. The Handbook of Technology and Second Language Teaching and Learning demonstrates the extensive, multifaceted implications of technology for language teachers, learners, materials-developers, and researchers.

This book is where corpus and cognitive linguistic approaches meet based on sound evidence. The idea behind the thesis is ' grammmar is more than grammar, and words are more than words'. This thesis is inspiring as well as challenging in that it also shows possiblity and impossibility of language that also implies that collocations and collostructions go hand in hand in language use. It is challenging in that it poses serious questions to readers. Language cannot be delimited in spite of robust evidence with a relatively small data. This study also shows that collocations are conceptual in terms of its psychological and linguistic meaning. It also addresses pedagogic implications for second language acquisition in particular.Second language users can use this book as a small scale reference dictionary in academic writing.

The way language is acquired and learnt has for long been an intriguing issue in social science. This question has attracted researchers from a variety of disciplines and people from different theoretical persuasion and predilections. The process of second language acquisition is yet another of area that is worthy of investigation, given to the agglomerate of the issues that this process engenders to second language learners (L2, henceforth). Of interest to the present study is the way this process jointly interacts with a number of factors, most important of which is the learner's mother tongue. In this regard, a question of considerable interest is whether or not a learner's first language affects the process of second language acquisition, in such a way that this interference may either help ease or thwart the developmental path of the learning process. Another interesting query concerns the extent of which formal education reduces or helps circumvent this interference. On this view, the present study sets as its research goals the objectives of providing an investigation of the issue of pragmatic transfer from L1 into the Interlanguage of Moroccan learners of English, namely when these learners make requests in English. More specifically, this study will seek to compare the average frequencies of direct and indirect strategies used by both native Moroccan English as a foreign language learners and native speakers of English. Finally, this study will further attemp...

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Kassel (Institut für Fremdsprachenlehr- und Lernforschung, Interkulturelle Kommunikation), course: Hauptseminar: Error Analysis, language: English, abstract: Given that mistakes and errors are inevitable in second language acquisition, EFL teachers have to provide corrective feedback (CF) for their students to promote writing accuracy. In second language acquisition research, CF is a topic of great interest since Truscott (1996) argued that error correction has no significant effect for students' new pieces of writing. Ferris (1999) and several other advocates have proven that different types of CF can be beneficial for L2 writing accuracy; however, as this thesis will demonstrate, direct and indirect types, as well as focused and unfocused types of error correction rely on different didactic approaches with different effects in students' language awareness to be expected. As studies on written corrective feedback present divergent results, further research has to be done to get deeper insight into feedback practices that also include personality factors and other individual learner differences that might affect students' perceptions of different CF strategies.
