Energy constraint is the most critical problem in wireless sensor networks. To address this issue, clustering has been introduced as an efficient way for routing. However, the available clustering algorithms do not efficiently consider the geographical information of nodes in cluster-head election. This leads to uneven distribution of cluster-heads and unbalanced cluster sizes that brings about uneven energy dissipation in clusters. In this book, an Efficient Distributed Cluster-head Election technique for Load balancing (EDCEL) is proposed. The main criterion of the algorithm, dispersal of cluster-heads, is achieved by increasing the Euclidean distance between cluster-heads. Simulation results show the effectiveness of this approach in terms of balancing intra-cluster energy dissipation and lifetime longevity.

Every day in our life is larded with a huge number of chemical reactions on surfaces. Some reactions occur immediately, for others an activation energy has to be supplied. Thus it happens that though a reaction should thermodynamically run off, it is kinetically hindered. Meaning the partners react only to the thermodynamically more stable product state within a mentionable time if the activation energy of the reaction is supplied. With the help of catalysts the activation energy of a reaction can be lowered. Such catalytic processes on surfaces are widely used in industry. Around 90% of chemicals are produced via a heterogeneously catalyzed process where a reaction occurs on the surface of a catalyst. However, why is it generally possible that such reactions run off with the help of heterogeneous catalysis, meaning with lower activation energy than without presence of a catalyst? What happens with the energy which is released during a reaction of gas particles on surfaces? How is this energy released, when some part of the energy is transferred to the reactant and some to the chemically active surface? Which physical mechanisms play a key role in the energy transfer? The Uemachi fault is a 40-kilometer long reverse fault that traverses north south through the middle of the Osaka City, one of the most highly populated regions in Japan. An integrated geophysical survey, using shallow high-resolution seismic reflection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods, was carried out across the Uemachi fault system to explore the subsurface geometrical layout of the fault and to investigate the possible activity and evolution of the fault system in order to mitigate future natural hazards. Seismic survey lines that had been acquired using different acquisition parameters and instrumentation were compiled into a single 9.2-kilometer long seismic section that shows the subsurface configuration of the Uemachi fault and the Suminoe flexure. A GPR survey was conducted across the Uemachi fault to investigate the shallow part of the subsurface and to confirm the presence of the shallow faults detected by seismic survey. Integrated information from seismic sections, GPR survey and drilling data in the study area are used to construct a simple structural model, which explains the subsurface geometry, activity, and evolution of the Uemachi fault.

Tunnels are an integral part of the modern infrastructure used for subways, railways, highways and transport of water and sewage. Tunnels usually experience a lower rate of damage than the surface structures. However, some tunnels have experienced significant damage in large earthquakes, including the 1995 Kobe, Japan earthquake, the 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan earthquake and the 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake. The tunnel failures during earthquakes are mainly due to the lack in moment capacity of the tunnel lining. The tunnels which are subjected to earthquake activity must withstand both seismic and static loading. Prediction of actual strain that could develop in the tunnel lining due to ground deformation and the stresses during earthquakes constitutes one of the important aspects of seismic response analysis of tunnels. The objective of the present study is to carry out seismic response analysis of the tunnel considering variations in the surrounding soil medium, thickness of the lining and length of the tunnel. One numerical example involving circular tunnel is considered for the seismic analysis. Pseudostatic and time history analyses are carried out using finite element method.

Elevators comprise components prone to earthquakes which should be protected against failures. Elevators installed in and around the Great Rift Valley are subjected to seismic effects. Dynamic Performance of elevators depends mainly on the contact between the guide rails and sliding shoes. Only few studies had been conducted to improve it. This book discusses seismic performance of elevators based on rail-slide shoe-counterweight connections. Lumped parameter dynamic and analytic models are generated for possible causes of nonlinearities; then equations of motions are formulated. To verify the analysis, a case study is conducted based on an elevator installed in Bole area that lies in zone-3 of the seismic map of Addis Ababa. The problem is analyzed with EBCS code and the PSD. It is found that EBCS code is inept to handle random vibrations like the earthquake motion and a code revision is suggested. Moreover, elevators constructed in Ethiopia found not to resist seismic motions larger than 0.1g.

Dynamic logic circuits have been popularly used in advanced high speed processors as they occupy less area and have higher speed in comparison with the static CMOS counterparts. Domino logic is one of the popular dynamic logic. The major problems with domino gates are higher dynamic power, static power and lower noise immunity than static logic circuits. In this work, an attempt has been made to design novel circuit techniques for robust, energy-efficient and high performance domino logic circuits in deep submicron technology. All the existing and proposed techniques have been simulated and tested using VLSI back end tools. The logic swing at the output, power dissipation, propagation delay, PDP, area, and noise margins have been evaluated. The study has been carried in 65 nm technology at clock frequencies of 0.05 to 1.5 GHz. The attempt of designing novel circuit techniques for robust, energy-efficient, and high performance domino logic circuits in DSM technology has been achieved. The designed circuits are having better results than the existing circuits in terms of power dissipation, propagation delay, PDP, and noise immunity.

During the last decades, the scientific community spent many efforts to study the gas hydrates in oceanic and permafrost environments. In fact, the gas hydrate occurrence has a global significance because it is a potential energy resource. Moreover, it may play a role in global climate change. The detection of a bottom-simulating reflector (BSR), by using seismic methods, has allowed to define the distribution of gas hydrate. In the last decades, along the Chilean continental margin the BSR is well reported by several geophysical cruises. In particular, the BSR is recognized along the accretionary prism. The main goal of this study is to map the gas hydrate occurrence along Chilean margin. The main results obtained from seismic analysis are shown in this book. This analysis giving us information regarding the seismic velocity distribution, geothermal gradient, variation of gas concentrations and a realistic estimate of gas-phase. The results are promising because an important gas reservoir was identified.
