Wheat is the second most important staple food after rice consumed by 65% of the population in India. Fertilizer plays a leading role in increasing crop production by almost 41%. This study was conducted to assess the socioeconomic status and gender role of cereal crop production in two VDCs of Arghakhachi district. A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect the information from the respondents. Two VDCs were selected purposively and 60 HHs (30 from each VDC) were selected randomly for the survey. Cereal crop production has great contribution in HH income and livelihood upliftment. The study area was male dominated. Agriculture was the major occupation in the study area. The average area under rice (7.46 ropani) was more followed by wheat (4.58 ropani) and maize (4.35 ropani) in the study area. Hybrid variety of rice, HYV of maize and local variety of wheat was most popular. Seed was higher for wheat (10.73 kg) followed by rice (8.75 kg) and maize (6.5 kg).Total production of rice was higher than maize and wheat.The major problems in the study area were lack of technical assistance, lack of irrigation facilities and low quality seed.

Wheat encounters severe salt problems in comparison to rainy season crops because of high salt concentration which is built up in the root zone owing to high crop transpiration or by the use of saline water which adversely affects the growth of plant due to osmotic effects, ionic toxicity, nutritional imbalances and physico-chemical degradation of soil. Although reclamation is a solution to this problem but scarcity of irrigation water, financial constraints and lack of drainage facility hampers its implementation. In such an eventuality, breeding for salinity tolerance is the only admirable approach. Available information on genetic architecture of yield and it's contributing characters of bread wheat for salinity conditions is very less; thus it is necessary to study the genetics for yield and related characteristics and their inheritance under salinity conditions. The ensuing investigation were undertaken to analyse three crosses of wheat including salinity tolerant parents under saline and normal environments with the relevant objectives like estimation of the magnitude of gene effects for yield and its contributing characters in three crosses of wheat for improving tolerance.

This report summarizes the results of six year (1996-97 to 2002-03) of Remote Sensing (RS) based district-level wheat acreage estimates and agromet model predicted wheat yields. District-level preharvest wheat production forecast in major wheat growing districts in Himachal Pradesh was attempted under crop acreage and production estimation (CAPE) project. Single date Indian Remote Sensing Satellite digital data, coinciding with flowering to grain filling stage of wheat was analysed for wheat acreage estimation using maximum likely hood (MXL) supervised classification and district boundary mask approach. Agrometeorologial yield models were developed for wheat yield forecast using meteorological data such as minimum-maximum temperatures, rainfall and sunshine hours. The meteorological indices viz. Growing Degree Days (GDD), Temperature Difference (TD), Accumulated Rainfall (ARF) and Accumulated Sunshine Hours (ASH) were computed and used in model development. This report also brings out problems in wheat acreage estimation in hilly terrains using Remote Sensing data.

Molecular markers especially, microsatellite or simple sequence repeats (SSRs) was the marker aided selection (MAS) technique utilized to determine salinity tolerance in rice. It accelerates rice breeding process by significantly improving selection efficiency. Fourty varieties were used to study the effect of salt stress on seedling growth and efficiency of SSR markers for the screening of salt tolerant varieties. Phenotyping of the varieties at the seedling stage was done using salinized (EC=12ds/m) culture solution under controlled conditions at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) glasshouse. Salt tolerant varieties showed stunted growth with the reduction of leaf area over the varieties of non-saline conditions. The seedlings grown from the normal seeds were vigorous than the seedlings from the seeds of saline conditions. This result indicated the impediment of seed vigor due to salt stress.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Biology - Botany, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: The increase of metals pollution in soil is a worldwide problem that effects the health of humans and environment. The use of green technology such as phytoremediation is one the environmental friendly technique, in which plants and other microbes are used to reduce the level of metals contaminants in soil and lower its uptake towards plants tissues. Studies reported a number of cereal crops such as wheat and medicinal plants like alfalfa accumulate heavy metals in their tissues at higher concentrations. In the present study, we investigated the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on wheat and alfalfa plants with the increase of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in soil. After eight weeks of pot experiment, roots colonization, shoot and root biomass, growth, heavy metals contents and other biochemical parameters were assessed. The results indicated mycorrhizal inoculated (M) plants performed better at moderate Zn and Cd concentrations. In addition, higher phosphorus contents were observed in M treated plants as compared to NM plants. Results indicated that AMF inoculum exhibit different tolerance strategies to reduce metals toxicity in host plants. The effective mycorrhizal symbiosis was observed with wheat and alfalfa plants and can be useful for phytostabilization of metals contaminated soils which can play a vital role in increase of plants prod...

Worldwide, wheat is a staple food of man kind. To evaluate the phytotoxicity of different concentrations (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10 and 25 µM) of mercury (Hg) parameters like growth, biomass, total protein and chlorophyll content were determined. Hg induced oxidative damage was analysed by the measurement of electrolytic leakage, H2O2 and MDA content. Further, to investigate antioxidative defense mechanism induced by Hg, the level of non enzymatic antioxidants such as CAR, ASC and the activity of enzymatic antioxidants CAT, POX, APX, and SOD have been measured. Wheat plants exposed to lower concentrations of Hg (2.5 and 5 µM) did not experience any oxidative stress. However, treatment with 10 µM of Hg, the roots and leaves of wheat plants responded differently. Both the leaves and roots of plants treated with higher concentration of Hg (25 µM) were subjected to comparatively greater oxidative damage demonstrating that the antioxidant components were not able to remove the Hg stress at higher concentration in Triticum aestivum.

Mindfulness is an individual characteristic that does not only influence the stress response, but also cognitive processes. Therefore, effects of trait-mindfulness on the balance between goal-directed and habitual behavior after a stress induction were investigated. During this study, forty-seven healthy male and female participants mainly without meditation experience, were exposed to either a laboratory acute stress induction or a control procedure before they performed in a two-staged instrumental learning paradigm and completed a mindfulness questionnaire. Participants learned the acquired discriminations and a congruence effect, as predicted, was found. Moreover, explicit knowledge was highly indicative of level of goal-directedness. The stress manipulation was successful. Stressed individuals did not shift more towards habits. Mindfulness did not predict the level of goal-directedness, neither did it affect stress responses. Future studies might incorporate a mindfulness intervention or compare differently experienced meditators. This could help to approve mindfulness as a potential intervention to reduce cognitive shifts towards habits, which play a major role in development of pathological behavior.

Bacteria in various habitats are subject to continuously changing environmental conditions, such as nutrient deprivation, heat and cold stress, UV radiation, oxidative stress, dessication, acid stress, nitrosative stress, cell envelope stress, heavy metal exposure, osmotic stress, and others. In order to survive, they have to respond to these conditions by adapting their physiology through sometimes drastic changes in gene expression. In addition they may adapt by changing their morphology, forming biofilms, fruiting bodies or spores, filaments, Viable But Not Culturable (VBNC) cells or moving away from stress compounds via chemotaxis. Changes in gene expression constitute the main component of the bacterial response to stress and environmental changes, and involve a myriad of different mechanisms, including (alternative) sigma factors, bi- or tri-component regulatory systems, small non-coding RNA’s, chaperones, CHRIS-Cas systems, DNA repair, toxin-antitoxin systems, the stringent response, efflux pumps, alarmones, and modulation of the cell envelope or membranes, to name a few. Many regulatory elements are conserved in different bacteria; however there are endless variations on the theme and novel elements of gene regulation in bacteria inhabiting particular environments are constantly being discovered. Especially in (pathogenic) bacteria colonizing the human body a plethora of bacterial responses to innate stresses such as pH, reactive nitrogen and oxygen species and antibiotic stress are being described. An attempt is made to not only cover model systems but give a broad overview of the stress-responsive regulatory systems in a variety of bacteria, including medically important bacteria, where elucidation of certain aspects of these systems could lead to treatment strategies of the pathogens. Many of the regulatory systems being uncovered are specific, but there is also considerable “cross-talk” between different circuits. Stress and Environmental Regulation of Gene Expression and Adaptation in Bacteria is a comprehensive two-volume work bringing together both review and original research articles on key topics in stress and environmental control of gene expression in bacteria. This paper examines empirically the hypothesis that the stress test results published have influence on banks' ongoing risk mitigation efforts. The hypothesis rests on the evidence that stress tests have induced a reaction in bank equity and debt markets, which in turn sends a clear market signal to banks' management. The concept of market discipline implies that market prices can influence the banks' management in terms of their risk mitigation decisions. Using a difference-in-differences approach, it is measured how banks reacted to their respective stress test results. The evaluation shows a general rise in risk mitigation efforts of EU banks when looking at average total capital ratios since 2007. However, the results do reject the hypothesis that banks with low stress test scores have a stronger incentive to mitigate risk after the stress test publication. Yet low score banks demonstrate that adequate capital buffers were already set in place long before the stress test results. Inverse creep is a phenomenon, which is found to occur in viscoelastic materials when the applied stress is partially reduced. At this reduced stress, the strain in the material reduces continuously with time, though it is still under stress. Inverse creep values depend on the material and also on its stress history. During weaving of a fabric, weft threads are inserted in between the warp threads, which are along the direction of the fabric production. A weft thread undergoes variation in stress during weaving. It is at high stress when it is being laid down in the fabric. But the stress may not reduce to zero once the thread is laid down; thus giving rise to the phenomenon of inverse creep. Creep of textile materials has been measured by number of researchers. Inverse creep can be measured by the method demonstrated by Nachane. The objective of the work described in book was to design an instrument, which can measure the instantaneous extension or contraction of yarn. Automation in storing the data is achieved. Stored data can then be easily analyzed. Creep and inverse creep of four textile yarn types at various levels of stress have been studied by using developed device.

We' ve shown for the first time that gene expression pattern is altered in the myocardium of cholesterol-fed mouse in response to ischemic preconditioning. This effect is apparent in the regulation of NO signaling, oxidant producing enzymes, and the mevalonate pathway. Our was the first demonstration in human apoB-100 transgenic mice, that hypercholesterolemia but not hypertriglyceridemia is responsible for the hyperlipidemia-induced, peroxynitrite-mediated cardiac dysfunction, and that increased cardiac NADPH oxidase activity is a major source of increased oxidative stress in hypercholesterolemia. We observed first, that acute lovastatin treatment abolished the infarct size-limiting effect of ischemic preconditioning and that chronic lovastatin treatment attenuated the protective effect of ischemic postconditioning. We've also proposed that acute and chronic lovastatin treatment might modulated the cardioprotective mechanisms through different cellular pathways.

Bacteria in various habitats are subject to continuously changing environmental conditions, such as nutrient deprivation, heat and cold stress, UV radiation, oxidative stress, dessication, acid stress, nitrosative stress, cell envelope stress, heavy metal exposure, osmotic stress, and others. In order to survive, they have to respond to these conditions by adapting their physiology through sometimes drastic changes in gene expression. In addition they may adapt by changing their morphology, forming biofilms, fruiting bodies or spores, filaments, Viable But Not Culturable (VBNC) cells or moving away from stress compounds via chemotaxis. Changes in gene expression constitute the main component of the bacterial response to stress and environmental changes, and involve a myriad of different mechanisms, including (alternative) sigma factors, bi- or tri-component regulatory systems, small non-coding RNA’s, chaperones, CHRIS-Cas systems, DNA repair, toxin-antitoxin systems, the stringent response, efflux pumps, alarmones, and modulation of the cell envelope or membranes, to name a few. Many regulatory elements are conserved in different bacteria; however there are endless variations on the theme and novel elements of gene regulation in bacteria inhabiting particular environments are constantly being discovered. Especially in (pathogenic) bacteria colonizing the human body a plethora of bacterial responses to innate stresses such as pH, reactive nitrogen and oxygen species and antibiotic stress are being described. An attempt is made to not only cover model systems but give a broad overview of the stress-responsive regulatory systems in a variety of bacteria, including medically important bacteria, where elucidation of certain aspects of these systems could lead to treatment strategies of the pathogens. Many of the regulatory systems being uncovered are specific, but there is also considerable “cross-talk” between different circuits.
