This book presents new guidelines for the control of cracking in massive reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Understanding this behavior during construction allows engineers to ensure properties such as durability, reliability, and water- and air-tightness throughout a structure’s lifetime. Based on the findings of the French national CEOS.fr project, the authors extend existing engineering standards and codes to advance the measurement and prediction of cracking patterns. Various behaviors of concrete under load are explored within the chapters of the book. These include cracking of ties, beams and in walls, and the simulation and evaluation of cracking, shrinkage and creep. The authors propose new engineering rules for crack width and space assessment of cracking patterns, and provide recommendations for measurement devices and protocols. Intended as a reference for design and civil engineers working on construction projects, as well as to aid further work in the research community, applied examples are provided at the end of each chapter in the form of expanded measurement methods, calculations and commentary on models.

Disposal of waste tires has been known as a serious environmental problem. Since burying tires in landfills is not an easy solution either, highway engineers around the world have tried to incorporate scrap tire rubber in asphalt pavements as a modifier. This book investigate the use of Crumb Rubber Modifier (CRM) as a waste material in modifying the performance of the asphalt concrete mixtures. HMA mixtures characterization in terms of fatigue cracking and rutting resistance was analyzed and evaluated to determine the effects of the crumb rubber on the mixtures’ performance. In addition, studying the effect of various environmental effects such as temperature, aging and moisture damage on the mechanical properties of the asphalt concrete mixtures. Several tests were used such as indirect tensile strength, indirect tensile fatigue and static creep test.

Concrete is a composite construction material made primarily with aggregate, cement, and water. There are many formulations of concrete, which provide varied properties, and concrete is the most used man-made product in the world. Concrete is widely used for making architectural structures, foundations, brick/block walls, pavements, bridges, dams, pools/reservoirs, even boats etc. There is a general view that the size of coarse aggregate affects only the properties of fresh concrete and it is impact on hardened properties is insignificant. This book presents the impact of different sizes of coarse aggregate on fresh and hardened properties of concrete. While slump cone test evaluated the fresh concrete properties, compressive strength test determined the hardened state properties by using concrete mixtures that proportioned with three types of cements. Graded coarse aggregates with maximum aggregate size were selected for this experimental program for each cement. The results show that while the coarse aggregate size influences the slump, it is not relevant to compressive strength. The latter properties are governed by (w/b) ratio, cement type and cement content.

Concrete is a versatile construction material. For more durable and strong structures, the concrete of high strength is required. To make concrete more strong, pozzolans are added to concrete. Metakaolin ( MK ) is a pozzolana used to achieve the required strength. The present study investigates the characteristics strength of concrete due to partial replacement of cement by MK and addition of polypropylene fibres (PPF). M30 concrete was designed according to BIS guidelines. The investigation was carried out on concrete containing MK and PPF at various proportions of 0%, 7%, 8% and 9% of MK and 0%, 0.2%, 0.5% and 0.8% of PPF. Fly ash (10%) and superplasticizer (0.7%) has been added to improve the workability of concrete. In present study, the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of concrete containing metakaolin and fly ash were analysed. Analysis of cement, metakaolin and fly ash was done with XRD. Samples K0, K4, K8 and K12 containing 0%, 7%, 8% and 9% MK (by weight of cement) respectively at the sample age of 1 day were also analysed with XRD.

Vaginal self-stimulation (VS-S) and cervical self-stimulation (CS-S) were studied to determine the effect on: chronic pain intensity (CPI), pain detection threshold (PDT), and pain tolerance threshold (PTT). There were differences in the response to self-stimulation based on the type of pain, somatic or visceral. The effect of both VS-S and CS-S outlasted stimulation. The results must be viewed cautiously based on the small sample size. This is the first human study to demonstrate a difference in the effect of neurostimulation on analgesia and pain thresholds. This study indicates that not all chronic pain, even when located in the same area of the body, is the same. It is apparent that more research is needed to differentiate the effect of stimulation-produced analgesia on various types of chronic pain.

Using a new system of U-links and/or plated studs in CFT beams to join the steel tube with the concrete core in the compression side of the beam resulted in large confinement of the concrete core. Confinement is achieved by employing the separation expected between the two materials. A total of eight rectangular CFT beam specimens were tested under flexure with different ratios and different diameters for the U-links and/or plated studs were used to examine their effect on the flexural behavior of these beams. Ultimate flexural strength of the CFT beams with U-links and plated studs showed increase of strength about 45% of the specimens with ratio equals 37.5 above standard specimens with no links inside. State of the concrete inside the tubes has shown no crushing of the concrete when those beams were cut open at the location of plastic hinge. Strain measurements revealed that the compressive strain in concrete was 5-6 times the concrete crushing strain.

The book covers the application of numerical methods to reinforced concrete structures. To analyze reinforced concrete structures linear elastic theories are inadequate because of cracking, bond and the nonlinear and time dependent behavior of both concrete and reinforcement. These effects have to be considered for a realistic assessment of the behavior of reinforced concrete structures with respect to ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states. The book gives a compact review of finite element and other numerical methods. The key to these methods is through a proper description of material behavior. Thus, the book summarizes the essential material properties of concrete and reinforcement and their interaction through bond. These basics are applied to different structural types such as bars, beams, strut and tie models, plates, slabs and shells. This includes prestressing of structures, cracking, nonlinear stressstrain relations, creeping, shrinkage and temperature changes. Appropriate methods are developed for each structural type. Large displacement and dynamic problems are treated as well as short-term quasi-static problems and long-term transient problems like creep and shrinkage. Most problems are illustrated by examples which are solved by the program package ConFem, based on the freely available Python programming language. The ConFem source code together with the problem data is available under open source rules at concrete-fem.com. The author aims to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of numerical methods for simulation of reinforced concrete structures, addressing students, teachers, researchers and designing and checking engineers.

Reduction of angle of internal friction with increasing stress level of sandy soil is widely recognized and noticed by many researchers. There are limited studies on the effect of this reduction on bearing capacity of piles. This book presents a study of the effect of this reduction on axially loaded bored piles embedded in dense and medium sand by using finite element approach. The soil modeled using a hyperbolic soil model with an empirical equation to account for the reduction of angle of internal friction with increasing stress level while the concrete bored pile modeled as a linear elastic material. Investigating the effect of the stress level on behavior of piles, bearing capacity factor Nq, and distribution of shear stresses in soil-pile interface along the pile shaft were made during this work by pass through a wide range of stresses by using piles with dimensions starting from laboratory dimensions and goes towards field dimensions with an embedment ratio L/D range (15, 20, 25, 30, and 40). Also, two models to estimate pile capacity in medium and dense sand are developed in this work using statistical techniques based on finite element analysis results.

Thermal and fatigue cracking are pavement distresses that deteriorate asphalt pavements in Canada. However, the current AASHTO M320 standard specification protocol does not give satisfactory correlation between the properties measured in the laboratory to thermal and fatigue cracking performance of the asphalt in service. This work is aimed at validating the newly developed MTO LS-299 and LS-308 specification test methods for predicting pavement distress. The work has shown that the extended bending beam rheometer and double edge notched tension tests are better tools for predicting pavement performance and provide good specification tests for the control of thermal and fatigue cracking in modern pavements.

Generally reuse of municipal wastewater is restricted for irrigation purposes only, whereas,the same can be used in plain cement concrete construction works without compromising the compressive strength. The main objectionable ingredient in municipal wastewater is the presence of sulfates which degrade concrete strength. In order to investigate the utility of municipal wastewater in concrete works, a study with the objectives of characterizing wastewater and its effects on plain cement concrete strength was designed at Faisalabad Pakistan, in the Laboratory.The sulfate constituents, found in the municipal waste water, is the major ingredients that affects the strength of concrete, i.e. 176 Kg / cm2 and 224 Kg / cm2 for municipal wastewater (MWW) and normal tap water respectively. The wide range of compressive strengths emanating from different combinations of municipal wastewater (MWW) provides its uses in different concrete construction activities of various strengths / loadings requirements.Basing on the results from the study,it can be envisaged that use of waste water in the construction industry can save upto 16 % the fresh water.

The main objective of this study is to present the effect of prestressing force and induced prestressing moment on the ultimate moment capacity for the structurally determinate and indeterminate prestressed beams. An analytical study was carried out for 33 structurally determinate internally bonded prestressed beams and 21 structurally determinate unbonded prestressed beams with different concrete compressive strength and different reinforcement ratios to determine the ultimate moment capacity. A numerical study included non linear finite element modeling using "Tno-Diana" software was used to solve 5 statically determinate prestressed beams, which were previously tested experimentally. These models were used as a calibration models for the program also 60 statically indeterminate prestressed beams were solved using "Tno-Diana" program and ultimate moment capacity, ultimate deflection, ultimate concrete strain, ultimate prestressing steel strain and load deflection curves were determined.

The appearance of new concretes increases the need to reliably characterize the behavior of concrete when flowing. The importance of the rheology and its measurement can be certified by the existing literature on the characterization of fresh concrete. In addition to traditional experimental methods such as the V-funnel, slump flow, sieve stability test and the L-box, a new Rheological characterization test has been used: it is the flow of concrete first in a V-Funnel and then in a horizontal plexiglas channel. The main objective of this test is to determine both the flow time in the V-Funnel (indicator of the viscosity of mixture) and the threshold shear of concrete by means of a single rheological test.

The swelling of concrete is a major concern for the owners and operators of dams and hydraulic structures. Faced with irreversible movement of their dams or with observations of cracking processes, operators need to explain the phenomena observed in order to justify safety conditions and in some cases to plan remedial works. Over the last 20 years, active research has been carried out in the field, resulting in practical results in phenomena interpretation and dam modeling. At the same time, an increasing number of affected dams have undergone safety re-evaluations and in some cases remedial work. Several of them have been removed altogether. Although it remains difficult to establish a “state of the art” in this domain due to the rapidly changing context, regular international exchanges in the field appear fruitful and necessary. Following on from previous conferences in the field organized by Robin Charlwood, former President of the ICOLD Concrete Committee, the initiative was taken by EDF and Toulouse University-LMDC to organize a workshop to provide a new opportunity for sharing experience. The aim of this workshop is to assemble active researchers, leading engineers, and experts from the practicing community and administration interested directly or indirectly in concrete swelling effects in dams and hydraulic structures. All types of chemical expansion phenomena, including those due to alkali aggregate reactions and those due to ettringite formation, are addressed. Studies on deformation characteristics of early-age Jointed Plan Concrete Pavements (JPCP) subjected to pure environmental loading has drawn significant interest as it is believed that the early-age deformation of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) slab could result in the loss of pavement smoothness and the tensile stresses induced by these deformations could result in early-age cracking. However, the complex interaction of several environmental factors has resulted in difficulties in predicting the JPCP deformation characteristics under environmental loading. This book discusses the early-age behaviors of JPCP under environmental loading. The slab deformations associated with temperature and moisture were analyzed using measured vertical displacements and pavement surface profile measurements. The variation of smoothness at different measurement times and locations are analyzed and discussed. The early-age deformation behavior of instrumented JPCP under environmental loading was also simulated using Finite Element (FE) programs using the equivalent temperature difference concept.

The aim of our research is to investigate the relationship between risk management, corporate governance and performance in Tunisian financial institutions. Mainly, this research seeks to examine the effect of risk management and some board's features on financial performance. Empirical analyses are conducted from a sample of 20 Tunisian financial institutions over the period 2002-2011 using an OLS regression. The study shows that board size affect performance significantly. Most importantly, the existence of a risk committee within the institution has a negative and significant effect on performance.

This work represents a contribution for the understanding of the concrete behaviour under repetitive and fatigue loading of plain and fibre reinforced concrete. An experimental program to get insight and to compare the behaviour of these two distinct materials under fatigue loading and, to collect controlled data for the calibration of a numerical model is presented. Compressive fatigue tests on cylinders and flexural fatigue tests on prisms, both on plain and fibre reinforced concrete, were performed. A numerical code was developed to analyse concrete under monotonic, cyclic and fatigue loading conditions, based on the theory of plasticity. The model assumes independent compression and tension behaviours. The monotonic model serves as the envelope for the cyclic and fatigue load models. For the cyclic model, two additional surfaces rule the behaviour of the model during the unloading and reloading process. The monotonic envelope bounds the movement of these surfaces. The fatigue model is based on visco-plasticity by assuming a fatigue limit outside which fatigue deformations occur. A model for the study of concrete pavements is presented.
