Praise for First-Generation College Students «Who students are when they start college does not dictate how much they can benefit, provided they take advantage of the myriad learning opportunities institutions offer. This book is replete with informative insights into the invisible minority we call 'first-gen students' as well as the policies, programs, and practices institutions should use to help them succeed.» —George D. Kuh, Chancellor's Professor of Higher Education Emeritus, Indiana University «Unnoticed and often poorly understood, first-generation college students now comprise nearly fifty percent of students on many college campuses. In this book Ward, Siegel, and Davenport offer great insights and practical suggestions on how higher education leaders can create a more welcoming, supportive, and inclusive experience for these students to succeed.» —Jeffrey R. Docking, president, Adrian College «Critical to our survival in a global economy is the selection, development, retention and graduation of creative college students. First-Generation College Students is both timely and essential for those interested in understanding the next generation preparing for college and the ways in which institutions might anticipate, and therefore avoid, habits that invite failure instead of graduation. The authors' work experiences, coupled with their cited research base, situate them uniquely to contribute intentional survival strategies to the sometimes unanticipated realities of today's college students.» —Zach Kelehear, associate dean for Academic Affairs and professor, College of Education, University of South Carolina «Long overdue, this book provides a comprehensive perspective of the unique issues facing first-generation students as they transition in and out of college. It is an important contribution to higher education during a time when faculty, staff, and administrators face heightened pressures to retain and graduate all students in a timely fashion.» —Cynthia Wolf Johnson, associate provost, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

This work addresses the need for age- and setting-appropriate social skills training for adolescents who have autism spectrum disorders. Such a program would be functional in a high school setting, as new policies support autistic students being mainstreamed into regular education schools. Literature is reviewed in the areas of social skills seen in normally functioning adolescents and the existing social skills training methods used both in and outside of schools, to address social skills deficits for those with autism. To limit the scope of this review, the population of focus includes individuals with Asperger's disorder and mild autism. A plan for clinical interventions in a school-based program is presented.

Create campuses inclusive and supportive of disabled students, staff, and faculty Disability in Higher Education: A Social Justice Approach examines how disability is conceptualized in higher education and ways in which students, faculty, and staff with disabilities are viewed and served on college campuses. Drawing on multiple theoretical frameworks, research, and experience creating inclusive campuses, this text offers a new framework for understanding disability using a social justice lens. Many institutions focus solely on legal access and accommodation, enabling a system of exclusion and oppression. However, using principles of universal design, social justice, and other inclusive practices, campus environments can be transformed into more inclusive and equitable settings for all constituents. The authors consider the experiences of students, faculty, and staff with disabilities and offer strategies for addressing ableism within a variety of settings, including classrooms, residence halls, admissions and orientation, student organizations, career development, and counseling. They also expand traditional student affairs understandings of disability issues by including chapters on technology, law, theory, and disability services. Using social justice principles, the discussion spans the entire college experience of individuals with disabilities, and avoids any single-issue focus such as physical accessibility or classroom accommodations. The book will help readers: Consider issues in addition to access and accommodation Use principles of universal design to benefit students and employees in academic, cocurricular, and employment settings Understand how disability interacts with multiple aspects of identity and experience. Despite their best intentions, college personnel frequently approach disability from the singular perspective of access to the exclusion of other important issues. This book provides strategies for addressing ableism in the assumptions, policies and practices, organizational structures, attitudes, and physical structures of higher education.

Black students in the United States continue to struggle academically as they matriculate into postsecondary education, placing them at risk for missing opportunities for work and social success. Research has identified the dimensions of Black racial identity, as well as other social factors, that may contribute to academic success. What is missing, however, is research grounded in a theory of Black identity that examines how identity and other factors combine to influence academic success. This quantitative online survey research tested 5 hypotheses to ascertain their relative strength in predicting academic success among Black college students. A sample of 87 Black American students (at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled as a matriculating student in postsecondary undergraduate education) completed four scales, and a demographics form that included overall GPA, as of most recently completed term. The results suggest that high school and college counselors and educators can gain insights into Black students by understanding racial identity, parents' education, and academic support.

However, the best chance of getting in to the school of your choice is to display your passion as to where you are headed in life, starting in 9th grade.High school seniors and college transfer students know how difficult it is to get into the top-tier colleges today. Creating a persuasive, eye-catching application requires creativity, foresight, and a marketable presentation as to what you can offer that will attract schools. That is why the process has to start with a resume. The student applying to college today m...

It is also discovered that social and psychological adaptations of Kurdish students are quite problematic as seen by the fact that British society has its social features, norms and a system of values, which are quite different from those operating in Kurdish society. Moreover, several intercultural adaptation theories of sojourners have been applied to understand the issues faced by Kurdish students and their problems in respect of adaptation into British society.

In addition, the book demonstrates how educators and biracial mentors had asignificant impact on this particular group of biracial women. The implications of these findings fo...

Stupid Schools, Stupid Students: Get Smart is full of examples of the horrible, yet laughable writing submitted by college students in college level English classes. Along with the decidedly non- academic work, the author builds a case against the ever increasing dependence on standardized tests in public schools across the U.S. The examples herein show the results of blind reliance on these tests that are supposed to raise academic standards and hold students, teachers and schools accountable for academic improvement. While most educators complain about the negative aspects of high-stakes testing there have only been a few, mostly unsuccessful, attempts to change course. Providing some background on the public education system in America and offering ideas about how to develop a higher standard of academics, the author demonstrates that standardized tests fail to teach students to think.
