Social norms are the informal laws of the society, which are sustained by social sanctions. Some social norms increase the welfare of the society, whereas others may make a significant part of the population worse-off. In India, norms related to the caste system had huge impact on the life of people, and still influence their decisions. Due to the prevalence of the caste system, the occupation of an individual used to be decided by the caste in which he was born. In modern India, caste based discrimination is illegal, nevertheless caste system has not lost its importance. One can easily find the differences in occupational structure and welfare level of upper and lower caste groups. However, the differences in occupational structure can also be found within the upper castes, suggesting that the differences may not be purely the result of caste based discrimination. The present study is an attempt to examine the direct and indirect impact of different social norms, related to caste system in India, on occupational choice. Two caste groups, Jat and Bania, are compared for this purpose. The study also examines the impact of social norms on the efficiency of different occupations.

This paper extends research on the relation between crime and happiness by investigating the impact of serious and less serious crime (i.e. incorrect behavior) on subjective wellbeing using a representative survey of the Dutch adult population in 2008. We also control for variables reflecting trust, health and social norms, in addition to standard demographic and socio-economic characteristics. We find that people who feel healthy, have more trust in others and have higher social norms are in general happier. We find evidence of an indirect effect of victimization on well-being via trust, health and social norms. The remaining effect of victimization on well-being, keeping trust, social norms, and health constant, is quite weak.

With public expenditure remaining stagnant and indifferent to meet the demands of 300 million growing middle class population of India, private sector is mushrooming fast. Out of pocket expenditure forms backbone for healthcare in India. Its contribution comes to around 68% of total healthcare expenditure. According to World Health Organization, it is estimated that only 3% of India's population is covered under some form of voluntary health insurance. This paves way for huge untapped market for health insurance in India. This work can provide descriptive baseline study in health insurance in India and should be useful for professional in similar field as well as healthcare stakeholders across the globe.

Among them is China that attempts to supersede India as most popular service offshoring destination. Where will be the back-office of the future?

Until now, lateral two-dimensional methods are used to assess three-dimensional changes that occur in the facial soft tissue of orthodontic patients. In this study a method for three- dimensional morphometric assessment of facial soft tissue changes following orthodontic treatment was introduced. Forty patients who underwent orthodontic treatment that resulted in lateral profile changes in the facial soft tissue were included in the study. Twenty patients underwent orthodontic treatment that resulted in facial soft tissue profile retraction and twenty patients underwent orthodontic treatment that resulted in soft tissue profile advancement. Two dimensional comparisons between pre-treatment and post- treatment lateral radiographs were carried out . Then, computerized pre-treatment and post-treatment three-dimensional head models were constructed for each patient utilizing frontal and lateral photographs. Computer graphic facial analysis was carried out to measure the three-dimensional volumetric deformation in each head model after orthodontic treatment in order to determine the changes that occur in the facial soft tissue of patients following orthodontic treatment.

This is the first New Directions volume related to young adult learners since 1984. Then, as now, young adults are an important segment of the adult population but have received scant attention in the adult education literature. Increasingly, youths and young adults are enrolling in adult education programs and in doing so are changing the meaning of adulthood. Given the significant demographic, technological, and cultural shifts during the past 30 years, there is an increasing need for practitioners and program planners to reconsider what constitutes “adult” and “adult education.” An understanding of the changing meaning of adulthood is fundamental to developing programs and policies that will address the needs of younger learners, and we believe it is time for an updated discussion among adult educators and scholars in other disciplines. This sourcebook is designed to reignite the discussion related to meeting the educational needs of young adults along with a timely and interdisciplinary discussion that highlights the transitional needs of young adult learners. This is the 143rd volume of the Jossey Bass series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, it explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.

The term growth and development as used in the studies of physical growth is referred as a process not only intimately linked with time, but also affected by different genetic conditions and environment modifications. In India due to variability in culture, religion, socio-economic status and dietary habits; there are no fixed anthropometric indices has been formulated. And the norms which are laid down for one region are not hold good in the other parts of the country. Also the growth studies especially of preschool age group are very few particularly in India. Thus the present attempt would add to our knowledge of the growth pattern of preschool age group i.e. at birth to 5 year children. The data collected for our study would be useful to be as an anthropometric measurement for reference and comparison with international standard.

Ralph Clayton Slavery, Slaveholding, and the Free Black Population of Antebellum Baltimore

This book promises to become the standard work of the history of the slaves, slaveholders, and the free black population of Antebellum Baltimore. For five years, Mr. Clayton has collected, transcribed, and cross-indexed a great variety of documents: applications for certificates of freedom, slave schedules, field assessor work books, census schedules, mortality schedules, general property tax records, city directories, newspaper advertisements and articles, the Schomburg collection at the Pratt Library in Baltimore, original letter manuscripts, and acts of the General Assembly of Maryland. The growth of Baltimore's black community, free and slave, was supported by two geographical factors of Baltimore. The city's thriving harbor offered a large employment market that attracted free blacks and offered slaveholders the opportunity to hire out their slaves. And Baltimore's position between the North and the South made it a logical station for escaped slaves either trying to reach the North or hoping to blend in with Baltimore's large free black population. The result of Mr. Clayton's labors is a comprehensive, fascinating, and sometimes painful view of an important period in the history of Charm City for which researchers everywhere will thank him.

India is home to one of the richest and most diverse populations of wildlife of any territory on earth, including lions, multiple species of tigers and leopards, many species of deer, the Indian elephant, the rhinoceros and a great multitude of reptiles and birds. At the beginning of the British Raj (1858) Indian wildlife populations were largely intact—some estimate that there were up to 100,000 tigers in the territory alone. The following 100 years, however, saw this rich heritage greatly depleted. A swelling native population combined with the British colonial passion for big game hunting wreaked havoc on all Indian wildlife. By the mid 20th century the tiger population was reduced to less than 2,000 animals and a number of other important species had been driven to extinction. Indian and international efforts in the past several decades have attempted to arrest, if not reverse the damage and at present India hosts some 515 wildlife sanctuaries and 18 biosphere reserves. The present volume, aside from providing a fascinating historical travalogue, presents a sampling of what Indian wildlife consisted of in the mid 19th century, prior to the devastation that was to follow. As such it is a fascinating read for all with interest in the ecology and history of the Subcontinent.

Work and family concerns are increasingly on the radar of colleges and universities. These concerns emerge out of workplace norms suggesting that for employees and students to be successful, they must be “ideal workers”. This volume explores work norms in higher education, focusing on the ways that employees and students interpret and experience ideal worker expectations in light of family responsibilities. Chapters address how the ideal worker norms vary for tenured and non-tenure track faculty, administrators, undergraduate and graduate students, and offers recommendations for modifying work norms to promote work-family balance for all constituents. This is the 176th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Higher Education. Addressed to presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other higher education decision makers on all kinds of campuses, it provides timely information and authoritative advice about major issues and administrative problems confronting every institution.

Tank irrigation systems of India are a century old. Tanks have been the main source of irrigation in many parts of India from time immemorial. Rainfall pattern is neither predictable nor uniform over space and the incidence of rainfall is also seasonal, occurring mainly during the southwest monsoon in most of the country except the rain shadow areas of the Western Ghats, notably Tamil Nadu. Tanks are one of the oldest sources of irrigation in India and the mainstay for the livelihood of many poor households. Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood in rural areas, which account for 75 per cent of India's population and 80 per cent of its poor, and in turn, irrigation is the base for about 56 per cent, possibly more of total agricultural output. Tanks in the Indian context were inextricably linked to the socio-cultural aspects of rural life and have historically been an indispensable part of the village habitat, sustaining its socio-ecological balance. In this regard the present study is contemplated.

Norman Owen-Smith Dynamics of Large Herbivore Populations in Changing Environments. Towards Appropriate Models

This book aims to reconcile theoretical models of population dynamics with what is currently known about the population dynamics of large mammalian herbivores. It arose from a working group established at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at the University of California, Santa Barbara, to address the need for models that better accommodate environmental variability, especially for herbivores dependent on changing vegetation resources. The initial chapter reviews findings from definitive long-term studies of certain other ungulate populations, many based on individually identifiable animals. Other chapters cover climatic influences, emphasising temperate versus tropical contrasts, and demographic processes underlying population dynamics, more generally. There are new assessments of irruptive population dynamics, and of the consequences of landscape heterogeneity for herbivore populations. An initial review of candidate population models is followed up by a final chapter outlining how these models might be modified to better accommodate environmental variability. The contents provide a foundation for resolving problems of diminishing large mammal populations in Africa, over-abundant ungulate populations elsewhere, and general consequences of global change for biodiversity conservation. This book will serve as a definitive outline of what is currently known about the population dynamics of large herbivores.

The issue of age old practice of open defecation and the provision of safe sanitary facilities to the people at the same time, has been one of the most difficult challenges before the Indian policy makers. The author investigates the rural sanitation campaign in Uttar Pradesh, a state in India, drawing on possible policy lessons from Bangladesh to use the techniques of Information,Education and Communication as a tool for mass mobilization for ensuring active community participation in the Clean India Campaign(Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan)to go for a sustained demand generation for toilets, its community ownership and finally bringing about lasting sanitary behavioral changes through inter-personal and inter-community communication. The author after deep investigations in the backward areas of Uttar Pradesh, having largely socio-economically vulnerable population, suggests certain grass root level policy interventions in order to meet out the ambitious sanitation targets under the Millennium Development Goals as set by the United Nations. The findings hold immense relevance in the wake of the resolve taken by the new Government in India to go for a clean India by the year 2019.

Introduction to Population Ecology, 2nd Edition is a comprehensive textbook covering all aspects of population ecology. It uses a wide variety of field and laboratory examples, botanical to zoological, from the tropics to the tundra, to illustrate the fundamental laws of population ecology. Controversies in population ecology are brought fully up to date in this edition, with many brand new and revised examples and data. Each chapter provides an overview of how population theory has developed, followed by descriptions of laboratory and field studies that have been inspired by the theory. Topics explored include single-species population growth and self-limitation, life histories, metapopulations and a wide range of interspecific interactions including competition, mutualism, parasite-host, predator-prey and plant-herbivore. An additional final chapter, new for the second edition, considers multi-trophic and other complex interactions among species. Throughout the book, the mathematics involved is explained with a step-by-step approach, and graphs and other visual aids are used to present a clear illustration of how the models work. Such features make this an accessible introduction to population ecology; essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in population ecology, applied ecology, conservation ecology, and conservation biology, including those with little mathematical experience.

The life of the founder of the famous frontier forceBritish India gave rise to a number of notable regiments and among them were few which could compare with the individualism, élan, fame and prowess of the Corps of Guides. This magnificent unit was formed in 1847 to comprise both cavalry and infantry and its purpose was to provide reliable men to act as guides to forces active in the field and to act as intelligence gatherers on the troubled borderlands of the North West Frontier. Its men were drawn from the fierce tribal men of the high country of the north of the Sub-Continent and their martial traditions ensured they were troops of the highest calibre. The man called upon to raise and command this exemplary unit was Harry Burnett Lumsden. Born aboard ship in the Bay of Bengal in 1821, the son of a serving officer in India, Lumsden had India in his blood from the outset. He joined the 59th Bengal Native Infantry in 1838 and was engaged in the disastrous First Afghan War at the forcing of the Khyber Pass. British India could only be consolidated as a whole by the subjugation of its most significant military power, the Sikhs of the Punjab and Lumsden fought in both Sikh Wars-being wounded at Sobraon in the first of them in February 1846. It was, however, for his creation of the Guides that he earned his fame as one of the notable figures of British India. This is the story of Lumsden's life and campaigns and it is an invaluable addition to any library of the Raj period.L...

Millets are nutritionally comparable to rice and wheat in different nutritional aspects and it provides cheap protein, minerals and vitamins to the population of low economic status, where the need for such ingredients is maximum. But their utilization is limited due to the presence of anti-nutrients, poor digestibility and low palatability. Some indigenous varieties of foxtail millets are sporadically produced in different parts of Assam, India. However, its utilization is very limited because of non availability of suitable processing techniques. Therefore, for better utilization of millets, two processing techniques viz.,popping and malting have been standardized using two locally available varieties of foxtail millet (Setaria italica), which are known as "Koni dhan" in Assam, North Eastern state of India. Nutritional composition of these millets in raw state and the compositional changes in nutrients during processing were studied in terms of proximate compositions, protein and starch digestibility.

Examination Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Political Sociology, Majorities, Minorities, , course: Develiopment Economics, language: English, abstract: Due to the invasion and occupation of Tibet by China, the first wave of Tibetan refugees seeking asylum came to India and neighbouring countries like Bhutan and Nepal in 1959. At the time, India, Nepal and Bhutan were economically and socially backward countries. India opened up its economy in the 1990's and it paved the way for socio-economic development of the country. Tibetan migrants were also able to use this opportunity for their own growth and economic development. The rise in awareness levels helped Tibetan migrants realize that they could further advance their individual and community growth by seeking job opportunities abroad. Thus, the first wave of migrants left for North America, Canada and European countries in early 1990's and they were able to send home remittances in dollars and pounds which fetched good exchange rate in India against the rupees. The flow of remittances from abroad enhanced the livelihood of Tibetan refugees in India and triggered a chain migration to the west. In this study, it focuses on the aspect of remittance and development on Tibetan refugee who has been settled in India for more than 5 decades and relies on remittances. The details of the profile of Tibetan diaspora will be discussed in chapter 4.

Population ecology has matured to a sophisticated science with astonishing potential for contributing solutions to wildlife conservation and management challenges. And yet, much of the applied power of wildlife population ecology remains untapped because its broad sweep across disparate subfields has been isolated in specialized texts. In this book, L. Scott Mills covers the full spectrum of applied wildlife population ecology, including genomic tools for non-invasive genetic sampling, predation, population projections, climate change and invasive species, harvest modeling, viability analysis, focal species concepts, and analyses of connectivity in fragmented landscapes. With a readable style, analytical rigor, and hundreds of examples drawn from around the world, Conservation of Wildlife Populations (2nd ed) provides the conceptual basis for applying population ecology to wildlife conservation decision-making. Although targeting primarily undergraduates and beginning graduate students with some basic training in basic ecology and statistics (in majors that could include wildlife biology, conservation biology, ecology, environmental studies, and biology), the book will also be useful for practitioners in the field who want to find – in one place and with plenty of applied examples – the latest advances in the genetic and demographic aspects of population ecology.
