This book studies methods to concretely address inverse problems. An inverse problem arises when the causes that produced a given effect must be determined or when one seeks to indirectly estimate the parameters of a physical system. The author uses practical examples to illustrate inverse problems in physical sciences. He presents the techniques and specific methods chosen to solve inverse problems in a general domain of application, choosing to focus on a small number of methods that can be used in most applications. This book is aimed at readers with a mathematical and scientific computing background. Despite this, it is a book with a practical perspective. The methods described are applicable, have been applied, and are often illustrated by numerical examples.

These notes are intended to describe the basic concepts of solving inverse problems in a stable way. Since almost all in verse problems are ill-posed in its original formulation the discussion of methods to overcome difficulties which result from this fact is the main subject of this book. Over the past fifteen years, the number of publications on inverse problems has grown rapidly. Therefore, these notes can be neither a comprehensive introduction nor a complete mono graph on the topics considered; it is designed to provide the main ideas and methods. Throughout, we have not striven for the most general statement, but the clearest one which would cover the most situations. The presentation is intended to be accessible to students whose mathematical background includes basic courses in ad vanced calculus, linear algebra and functional analysis. Each chapter contains bibliographical comments. At the end of Chap ter 1 references are given which refer to topics which are not studied in this book. I am very grateful to Mrs. B. Brodt for typing and to W. Scondo and u. Schuch for inspecting the manuscript.

This book is a new edition of a title originally published in1992. No other book has been published that treats inverse spectral and inverse scattering results by using the so called Poisson summation formula and the related study of singularities. This book presents these in a closed and comprehensive form, and the exposition is based on a combination of different tools and results from dynamical systems, microlocal analysis, spectral and scattering theory. The content of the first edition is still relevant, however the new edition will include several new results established after 1992; new text will comprise about a third of the content of the new edition. The main chapters in the first edition in combination with the new chapters will provide a better and more comprehensive presentation of importance for the applications inverse results. These results are obtained by modern mathematical techniques which will be presented together in order to give the readers the opportunity to completely understand them. Moreover, some basic generic properties established by the authors after the publication of the first edition establishing the wide range of applicability of the Poison relation will be presented for first time in the new edition of the book.

Seismic inversion aims to reconstruct a quantitative model of the Earth subsurface, by solving an inverse problem based on seismic measurements. There are at least three fundamental issues to be solved simultaneously: non-linearity, non-uniqueness, and instability. This book covers the basic theory and techniques used in seismic inversion, corresponding to these three issues, emphasising the physical interpretation of theoretical concepts and practical solutions. This book is written for master and doctoral students who need to understand the mathematical tools and the engineering aspects of the inverse problem needed to obtain geophysically meaningful solutions. Building on the basic theory of linear inverse problems, the methodologies of seismic inversion are explained in detail, including ray-impedance inversion and waveform tomography etc. The application methodologies are categorised into convolutional and wave-equation based groups. This systematic presentation simplifies the subject and enables an in-depth understanding of seismic inversion. This book also provides a practical guide to reservoir geophysicists who are attempting quantitative reservoir characterisation based on seismic data. Philosophically, the seismic inverse problem allows for a range of possible solutions, but the techniques described herein enable geophysicists to exclude models that cannot satisfy the available data. This book summarises the author’s extensive experience in both industry and academia and includes innovative techniques not previously published.

My interest to understand role of language in teaching and learning mathematical word problems evoked from my teaching and learning experiences. When I look back at my own learning experiences of mathematics at the secondary level, I remember that on a majority of occasions I felt handicapped in understanding the language of the text, especially in mathematics. This is because the language of teaching and learning mathematics is underestimated by teachers. Likewise, during my teaching I realized the need to find out about the role of language in teaching and learning word problems. As I observed students facing difficulties in understanding word problems presented in English. As a result, I wondered as to what extent language played a crucial role in understanding mathematical word problems. Was the role of language in mathematics being ignored? why did one need to understand the language of teaching and learning mathematics? These questions kept bothering me especially when I came across word problems because I believed that language and mathematical word problems were strongly related. Consequently, this book examines the connection between language and mathematical word problems.

The concept of an inverse problem is a familiar one to most scientists and engineers, particularly in the field of signal and image processing, imaging systems (medical, geophysical, industrial non-destructive testing, etc.) and computer vision. In imaging systems, the aim is not just to estimate unobserved images, but also their geometric characteristics from observed quantities that are linked to these unobserved quantities through the forward problem. This book focuses on imagery and vision problems that can be clearly written in terms of an inverse problem where an estimate for the image and its geometrical attributes (contours and regions) is sought. The chapters of this book use a consistent methodology to examine inverse problems such as: noise removal; restoration by deconvolution; 2D or 3D reconstruction in X-ray, tomography or microwave imaging; reconstruction of the surface of a 3D object using X-ray tomography or making use of its shading; reconstruction of the surface of a 3D landscape based on several satellite photos; super-resolution; motion estimation in a sequence of images; separation of several images mixed using instruments with different sensitivities or transfer functions; and more.

Evolving from years of teaching experience by one of the top experts in vegetation ecology, Data Analysis in Vegetation Ecology aims to explain the background and basics of mathematical (mainly multivariate) analysis of vegetation data. The book lays out the basic operations involved in the analysis, the underlying hypotheses, aims and points of views. It conveys the message that each step in the calculations has a specific, straightforward meaning and that patterns and processes known by ecologists often find their counterpart in mathematical operations and functions. The first chapters introduce the elementary concepts and operations and relate them to real-world phenomena and problems. Later chapters concentrate on combinations of methods to reveal surprising features in data sets. Showing how to find patterns in time series, how to generate simple dynamic models, how to reveal spatial patterns and related occurrence probability maps.

This volume is based around 14 chapters and two critical analyses which provide new perspectives onimportant organizational constructs. The first half of the book provides chapters by advanced graduatestudents who are making their first contributions to understanding organizational behavior. The secondhalf of the book provides chapters illustrating new views of organizational constructs but from the perspectivesof more established researchers in the field. All chapters share a common theme of attemptingto provide new ways of viewing organizations and organizational behavior. Each chapter is based on thepremise that, when presented with problems that seem impossible to solve, often the best results areachieved by finding new perspectives on the basic constructs being studied. These new perspectives provideinsights which illuminate the problems for the theory of organizations as well as improving the abilityof organizational members to solve practical organizational problems.

The present book contains one hundred and sixty problems, most of them simple, in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Some of these problems were used previously by the authors in their courses at the Moscow Institute of Engineering and Physics. However, the majority were drawn up or selected in the course of work on the book. This book is designed for physics students who are studying quantum mechanics approximately at the level of D.I.Blokhintsev's book or Part II of "Theoretical Physics" by A.S.Kompaneyts. A number of problems is intended primarily for students who are beginning to specialize in theoretical physics and who are partially familiar with the contents of "Quantum Mechanics" by L.D.Landau and Ye.M.Lifshits. Some problems illustrate individual theoretical questions which have scarcely been considered in textbooks: sudden and adiabatic changes; Heisenberg representation of operators; probability relations in addition of momenta; isotopic spin; parity; and others. The authors have tried to use relatively elementary mathematical tools of quantum mechanics to facilitate use of the book by nontheoretical physicists. With a few exceptions, the authors have not included in this book problems which are considered in sufficient detail in the basic textbooks mentioned above and in the problem book on quantum mechanics written by V.G.Levich. Therefore, this book should be regarded chiefly as an auxiliary textbook in the study of the above books.
