Gustav Frenssen, Francis J. Reynolds A German Soldier in South West Africa. Recollections of the Herero Campaign 1903-1904-Peter Moor.s Journey to South West Africa by Gustav Frenssen, With a Short Account of the German South West Africa Campaign by Francis J. Reynolds

The Herero campaign from the perspective of one of the invadersGermany’s late development as a modern nation meant it missed the opportunity to colonise the most desirable parts of the world. In the ‘scramble for Africa’ Germany managed to secure a foothold in the east of the continent and also in the west, in the region that is present day Namibia. This inhospitable and difficult country was, of course, already in the possession of several indigenous tribes including the Herero and Namaqua among others. German settlers instituted a policy of land grabbing which ignored the claims and possessions of the indigenous tribes and armed resistance inevitably broke out. The Germans responded ruthlessly with a policy of virtual extermination. The natives fought an effective guerrilla war with, at one point, up to 19,000 German troops engaged until the conclusion of operations in 1908. This book contains a very unusual account of a young volunteer soldier’s experience of this rarely described campaign of the early years of the twentieth century. Readers should note this is not an account from the Herero perspective. Appended to give historical context to this account is a short history of the campaign in South West Africa, 1915, during the First World War.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail band...

Ignatius Mabula The Relationship Between the South African Foreign Policy and the Millenium African Recovery Plan

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: The relationship between South Africa and MAP emanates from South Africa's Foreign policy which advanced: Promotion of justice, democracy and human rights as well as prosperity and security achieved through economic development. South Africa's philosophy of African Renaissance directed at rejuvenating and renewing Africa transforms the continent into an arena of peace, security and stability, was blended into MAP. Economically, South Africa's adoption of neo-liberal policies in MAP were encouraged by South Africa's incorporation of neo-liberal visions in MAP and have been influenced by the country's adoption of Growth, Equity and Redistribution (GEAR) in 1996. GEAR became the macro-economic framework for all policies of the government whose aim was to make South Africa the preferred destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as well as allowing the country to occupy a comfortable position in the rapidly globalising world. However, MAP has been grappling with numerous challenges and its dependency underpinning. These challenges include structural, endogenous and exogenous factors which continue to constrain Africa's endeavours. This paper focuses on the relationship between South African foreign policy and MAP. The paper explores foundations and the evolution of South African foreign policy datin...

This research studies Yemeni foreign policy towards the Horn of Africa. It mainly focuses on the importance the Horn of Africa represents to Yemen National Security. The research argues that although the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Horn of Africa are the main regional factors shaping Yemeni foreign policy, the Horn of Africa took priority over the Gulf Cooperation Council during the period 2000 to 2010. This research tries to answer some questions such as why the Horn of Africa was the most important factor shaping the Yemeni foreign policy and what were the policies and actions Yemeni foreign policy adopted to deal with the threats coming from that strategic area.

This book presents a typical example of discrepancy between policy and policy implementation in East Africa's third largest economy that is based on empirical evidence. Moreover, the book clearly highlights the intensions of the country's policy on ICT in education, examines the attempts to implement the policy, and evaluates the impact of such an implementation.

Aber was ist die Ostpolitik eigentlich? Schwer ist sie durch einen Begriff zu fassen oder zu umschreiben. Die Definition von Meyers Lexikon versucht es folgendermaßen: „im engeren Sinn die in den 1960er-Jahren unter Bundeskanzler K. G. Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: A, ESCP Europe, language: English, abstract: Development in Africa has been an issue for many years now. Since the independence of most of the states in the 1960's, the western countries have tried to help the so- called third world countries to develop their economies and thus to lift their population out of poverty. The efforts were conducted through direct intervention or through the non-governmental organisation like the IMF or the UN. Despite decades of commitment and billion dollar efforts, most of Africa remains in a poor status with nearly half of its population living on less than one dollar per day.Since its independence regional frameworks have existed but only obtained little attention from international as well as from national side. But with the failure of most programmes and the ever growing stronger trend to regional trade agreements throughout the whole world, the frameworks in Africa have moved in the centre of attention. International organisations promote the further integration of these; national governments put the frameworks on the top of their agendas. The aim of this project is to show the possible influence of regional cooperation frameworks in the development process of the countries in the West-African region. The analysis was focused on two existent regional frameworks, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic...

Allegations of Russian conspiracies meddling in the affairs of Western countries have been a persistent feature of Western politics since the Cold War – allegations of Russian interference in the US presidential election are only the most recent in a long series of conspiracy allegations that mark the history of the twentieth century. But Russian politics is rife with conspiracies about the West too. Everything bad that happens in Russia is traced back by some to an anti-Russian plot that is hatched in the West. Even the collapse of the Soviet Union – this crucial turning point in world politics that left the USA as the only remaining superpower – was, according to some Russian conspiracy theorists, planned and executed by Russia’s enemies in the West. This book is the first-ever study of Russian conspiracy theories in the post-Soviet period. It examines why these conspiracy theories have emerged and gained currency in Russia and what role intellectuals have played in this process. The book shows how, in the new millennium, the image of the ‘dangerous, conspiring West’ provides national unity and has helped legitimize Russia’s rapid turn to authoritarianism under Vladimir Putin.

"This is a timely, empirically solid, and theoretically sophisticated contribution to our understanding of one of Africa's recent 'small wars' . . . [that] throws new light on the 'crisis of youth' in post-colonial Africa, provides a fascinating critique of the notion of 'child' soldiers, explores the ways in which youth internalise the external world in negative self-images, [and] deepens our understanding of 'civil war' in Africa." · Michael Jackson, Harvard Divinity SchoolThrough the concept of "social navigation," this book sheds light on the mobilization of urban youth in West Africa. Social navigation offers a perspective on praxis in situations of conflict and turmoil. It provides insights into the interplay between objective structures and subjective agency, thus enabling us to make sense of the opportunistic, sometimes fatalistic and tactical ways in which young people struggle to expand the horizons of possibility in a world of conflict, turmoil and diminishing resources.Henrik E. Vigh is a researcher at the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims in Copenhagen. He holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen and has worked on issues of youth and conflict in both Europe and West Africa. Jackline Odero Re-Defining Governance in Africa

Changes in analysing prospects for socio-economic and political development in Africa has in the recent past shifted greatly to include actors outside of the traditional political elite category. This change in analysis has coincided with a new conceptualisation of civil society; the role of civil society is become more crucial in governance, and especially in pursuing socio-economic and political development in Africa. This book explores changes in Africa's governance processes and the opportunities that the changing context is creating for substantive civil society engagement. It examines Africa's democratic processes highlighting some core aspects of the democratic consolidation endeavours to date. In this analysis, Uganda's contemporary civil society context is used as a case illustration to examine how changing governance processes are creating opportunities for civil society engagement in national policy framework.

The generalized method of moment approach was used for the estimation on the policy reaction function. The study provides strong evidence that global inflation and output gap influenced monetary policy decisions of Central Bankers in the countries of WAMZ. Therefore, it is recommended that global variables should not be ignored and be given appropriate weight while forecasting domestic inflation and making monetary policy rules.

Victor Israelyan On the Battlefields of the Cold War. A Soviet Ambassador's Confession

"Memoirs are worthless if their authors attempt to present themselves as angels. I resolutely oppose those of my countrymen who shift responsibility for Soviet evils exclusively to the leaders. It is important that each Soviet citizen realize and admit his or her share of the responsibility." -from On the Battlefields of the Cold War For more than forty years Victor Israelyan served in the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rising through the ranks to become one of the Soviet Union's leading diplomats specializing in disarmament negotiations. He was forced to retire in 1987, a casualty of a system that was about to collapse under the weight of its contradictions. On the Battlefields of the Cold War offers unique insight into the volatile inner workings of the Soviet Foreign Ministry, where the battle lines of the Cold War were often first drawn. Israelyan has no patience for those of his compatriots who argue that Soviet foreign policy was ultimately just, save for a few "aberrations" such as the invasions of Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Afghanistan. These acts were intrinsic to the system, and without them the mighty Soviet Union would not have existed as long as it did. The very foundation of Soviet foreign policy, therefore, was untenable, and the entire structure it supported was destined to implode. Israelyan brings to this memoir a wealth of experience, having worked with all the postwar Soviet foreign ministers-from Molotov and Vyshinsky to Gromyko...

Elliott West The Essential West. Collected Essays

Drawing from the past three centuries, West weaves the western story into that of the nation and the world beyond, from Kansas and Montana to Haiti, Africa, and the court of Louis XV.Divided into three sections, the volume begins with conquest. West is not the first historian to write about Lewis and Clark, but he is the first to contrast their expedition with Mungo Park’s contemporaneous journey in Africa. “The Lewis and Clark expedition,” West begins, “is one of the most overrated events in American history—and one of the most revealing.” The humor of this insightful essay is a chief characteristic of the whole book, which comprises ten chapters previously published in major journals and magazines—but revised for this edition—and four brand-new ones.West is well known for his writings about frontier family life, especially the experiences of children at work and play. Fans of his earlier books on these subjects will not be disappointed. In a final section, he looks at the West of myth and imagination, in part to show that our fantasies about the West are worth studying precisely because they have been so at odds with the real West. In essays on buffalo, Jesse James and the McMurtry novel Lonesome Dove, West directs his formidable powers to subjects that continue to shape our understanding—and often our misunderstanding—of the American West, past and present.

On the heels of his bestselling Soviet Bus Stops, photographer Christopher Herwig locates fresh wonders of the Soviet vernacular in Georgia, Ukraine and Russia itself After the popular and critical success of his first book, Soviet Bus Stops, photographer Christopher Herwig has returned to the former Soviet Union to hunt for more. In this second volume, as well as discovering new stops in the remotest areas of Georgia and Ukraine, Herwig turns his camera to Russia itself. Following exhaustive research, he drove more than 9,000 miles from coast to coast across the largest country in the world, in pursuit of new examples of this singular architectural form. A foreword by renowned architecture and culture critic Owen Hatherley reveals new information on the origins of the Soviet bus stop. Examining the government policy that allowed these small architectural forms to flourish, he explains how they reflected Soviet values, and how ultimately they remained-despite their incredible individuality-far-flung outposts of Soviet ideology. The diversity of architectural approaches is staggering: juxtaposed alongside a slew of audacious modern and brutal designs, there are bus stops shaped as trains, birds, light bulbs, rockets, castles, even a bus stop incorporating a statue of St. George slaying the dragon. An essential companion to the first volume, this book provides a valuable document of these important and unique constructions.

John Buchan The First World War in Africa 1914-1918. Togoland, South-West Africa, the Cameroons . East Africa

A unique assessment of the Great War in sub-Saharan Africa in all its theatresThe great conflict fought between 1914 and 1918 set Europe ablaze, but, as the definition of ‘world war’ implies, embraced battlefields where the colonial interests of the protagonist nations inevitably collided. How this occurred on the continent of Africa has always fascinated military history students of the period, not least because these campaigns unconfined by the stagnation of trench warfare, as was the case on the Western Front, were fought over exotic terrains by national, militia and native forces often commanded by able and imaginative officers on both sides. Much focus has been given to the campaigns in East Africa, which features in detail in this book, but also included is the campaign fought in the arid landscape of South-West Africa (now Namibia) and those which took place in Equatorial Togoland (Ghana Volta) and The Cameroons in West Africa. The ‘South African Rebellion’ is also described. The author of this book, John Buchan, a writer of great talent and economy of phrase, was primarily known for his superlative adventure fiction. However, he was commissioned to write a multi-volume history of the First World War which enabled him to reveal his talent as an historian and from which this single volume edition has been selectively edited. Buchan’s text, appearing in this form for the first time in this Leonaur edition, includes many excellent maps and has been further enhanced by pho...

W. S. Rayner, W. W. O'Shaughnessy The Conquest of German South-West Africa, 1914-1915. A Comprehensive First-Hand Account and History by Two South African Correspondents

The war for colonial AfricaThis very substantial book, written by the two South African official correspondents on the campaign, narrates the expedition in 1914-15 which led to the conquest of German South-West Africa (the region now known as Namibia). One author accompanied the Northern Army and the other, the Southern Army. During the 19th century the great powers of Europe raced to establish themselves in all corners of the globe for colonisation, trade and political influence. In the 'great scramble for Africa,' the British and German empires had established themselves, by degrees, in the east and west of the continent. In the years before the outbreak of the First World War these colonies existed, more or less, in harmony but once hostilities erupted German and British settlers found themselves living in very close proximity to hostile forces. The British had the advantage of numbers since colonisation had long been a policy, though the Germans compensated for this measure with the abilities of their military commanders and the expertise and quality of their European and locally raised troops. (South Africa itself entered the fray, its forces led by commanders who a little over a decade earlier had led the Boer burghers in their attempts to form a nation independent of the British Empire.) This campaign of mobility was fought in the searing heat of a desert region and was often a 'tip and run affair' as mounted troops traversed huge tracts of inhospitable...

Alexander Sergunin Explaining Russian Foreign Policy Behavior. Theory and Practice

This book aims to explain the reasons behind Russia's international conduct in the post-Soviet era, examining Russian foreign policy discourse with a particular focus on the major foreign policy schools of Atlanticism, Eurasianism, derzhavniki, realpolitik, geopolitics, neo-Marxism, radical nationalism, and post-positivism. The Russian post-Soviet threat perceptions and national security doctrines are studied. The author critically assesses the evolution of Russian foreign policy decision-making over the last 25 years and analyzes the roles of various governmental agencies, interest groups and subnational actors. Concluding that a foreign policy consensus is gradually emerging in contemporary Russia, Sergunin argues that the Russian foreign policy discourse aims not only at the formulation of an international strategy but also at the search for a new national identity.Alexander Sergunin argues that Russia's current domestic situation, defined by numerous socio-economic, inter-ethnic, demographic, environmental, and other problems, dictates the need to abandon superpower ambitions and to rather set modest foreign policy goals.

Based on extensive archival research and, in particular, on documents of the Central Committee of the VKP(b), TsIK and SNK of the USSR and RSFSR, VSNKh, NKVD, and other institutions, this book analyses the aims and methods of pre-World War II urban housing policies in the Soviet Union. Among the issues covered are the principles of the Soviet approach to private and communal housing, the role of the state security organs in the administration and distribution of accommodation, different types of early Soviet lodging (communal houses, family flats, Soviet Houses and Hotels, etc.), the reasons for the abandonment of cooperative housing as well as for the restrictions on building private cottages, and the role of housing for enforcing certain types of behaviour and labour desired by the Soviet government. The study, for the first time in Russian language, describes in some detail the so-called New Housing Policy largely ignored in Soviet historiography.

The diversity of architectural approaches is staggering: juxtaposed alongside a slew of audacious modern and brutal designs, there are bus stops shaped as trains, birds, light bulbs, rockets, castles, even a bus stop incorporating a statue of St George slaying the dragon. Essential companion to the first volume, this book provides a valuable document of these important and previously overlooked constructions.

International Migration and Development in Eastern and Southern Africa

The impact of international migration, both South-South as well as South-North, on the economic, social and political life of the people in Eastern and Southern Africa [was] not well documented and studied,- and 'the evidence-base for policy on migration and development [was] very weak.' With this in mind, OSSREA's invitation to conduct a study on international migration in Africa had the following objectives: To analyze the nature and type of South-South migration, focusing on issues, such as brain gain and/or brain drain, remittance flows, technical know-how transfers, violations of the right of African migrants and gender dimensions of migration; To investigate the dynamics of migration from Eastern and Southern Africa to the Arab Gulf States as well as to developed countries, focusing on the skills of migrants, brain gain and/or drain, remittance flows, technical know-how transfers, violations of the rights of African migrants and gender dimension of migrants; and to assess the successes, impediments and challenges of African international migrants from Eastern and Southern Africa and to formulate policy recommendations to maximize the gains and minimize the costs associated with international migration in Africa.

Our argument is that civil society should be involved in the five key Areas (among others) which are: information collection and dissemination; Policy development consultation; Policy implementation, Assessment and monitoring and Advocacy for environmental justice. Generally, environmental governance is defined as a concept in political ecology and environmental policy that advocates sustainability as the supreme consideration for managing all human activities political, social and economic. It should be participatory, involving a wide range of stakeholders including government, business and civil society, and emphasizes whole system management.

S. B. Antwi, E. M. M. Omoruyi, L. Jihong The Competitiveness of West African Economies in the Chinese Market

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Xiamen University, language: English, abstract: West Africa is one of the regions on the African continent with abundant natural resources ranging from vast forest and arable land to mineral deposits. According to UN classification the region is endowed with about one-third of the least developed countries (LDCs) in Africa. The region has come under the spot light of most emerging economies like China, India, Brazil and other developed economies with the basic interest in the region's natural resources. How competitive West African economies are in their respective trading partners market to facilitate specialization in their exports has been a major issue. This paper analyzes the competitiveness and the pattern of trade flows of this sub region in the Chinese market to help both China and the sub region to mutually benefit from their trade partnership. Revealed comparative advantage index was used as an analytical tool with time series data from 2000-2010. The results indicated that West Africa enjoys revealed comparative advantage in ten out of the 63 product groups.

Max A. Smith The .Glocalization. of Mobile Telephony in West and Central Africa. Consumer Appropriation and Corporate Acculturation: A Case Study in Cameroon and Guinea-Conakry

This book examines the ‘glocalization’ – the adaptation of a global telecommunication technology to local particularities – in West and Central Africa. Through case studies in Cameroon and Guinea, the research presented evinces how local agency leads to the appropriation of mobile telephony, and the extent to which telecommunication companies acculturate their marketing strategies to consumer preferences and local realities. The book interrogates the presumptive neutrality of technology and presents evidence of agency superseding supposedly fixed limitations of use for mobile phones. In opposition to the notion of an Africa ‘lagging’ behind, the book also nuances the development discourse so often associated with the ‘leapfrog’ and spread of mobile telephony south of the Sahara. Overall, this study highlights ways in which agency leads to modernity being refracted locally in West and Central Africa and reflects on the tension at play between ‘globalizers’ and ‘globalized’.

Wasihun S. Gutema Gender inequality in the 2014 Ebola Crisis and Human Security

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research is to examine how the 2014 Ebola crisis affected women in West Africa from a human security perspective. The goal is to articulate how gender inequality has aggravated the spread of the Ebola virus diseases due to the unequal position held by women stemming from a patriarchal doctrine ingrained in Western African communities' cultures, governmental administrative incapability, and economic and social inequality. Gender inequality, which is deep-rooted in the culture of the Western African society, played a tremendous role in the spread of the disease resulting in more cases and deaths of the Ebola Virus diseases to the women population compared to male. It thus created a human security breach where women were exposed to insecurities. Gender inequality was the resultant effect from gender differences that paved the way for insecurities. Upon examination of the Ebola crisis in West Africa, it became clear that women were the most affected segments of the society in West Africa particularly in the three most hit countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Through showing the cruelty of cultural doctrine and gender inequality that have made the women population insecure, this research highlights the importance of gender and cultural equality along with better policy to protect wome...

Ludewig Ferdinand Romer, Selena a. Winsnes A Reliable Account of the Coast of Guinea (1760)

This is the first complete English translation of Ludewig Ferdinand Rømer's sensitive account of the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana) in the mid-eighteenth century. A vital resource on the history of West Africa, Rømer's work offers rich descriptions of African societies, trading practices with Europe, and religion. Ludewig Ferdinand Rømer was employed in West Africa from 1739 to 1749 by the Danish West India and Guinea Company. He published two books about the Gold Coast, a short one in 1756, and then his more substantial A Reliable Account of the Coast of Guinea in 1760. Rømer deals with the operation of the various European trading companies, and discusses the African-European relations that he had witnessed. But the real value of his work lies in his descriptions of the local context-the African traders and customers, their societies, practices and religion. And he was much interested in African history, particularly from oral traditions. This edition (principally of Rømer's 1760 text, but drawing on his 1756 volume too) makes available an uncommon source for the history of West Africa. This edition of Rømer's volume was runner-up for the African Studies Association's Texts Prize, 2001.

Nurettin Yigit Arab Spring in Berlin and Paris. German and French Foreign Policy Between Continuity and Change

The Arab Spring has not only affected the well-established structures in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) but became also a touchstone for the German and French foreign policy. A lasting three-year transformation process turned out to be an unpredictable factor for the traditional German and French foreign policy principles within a novel geopolitical environment. In this respect, this study deals with the comparative foreign policy analysis of Germany and France with regard to the transformations in the MENA since 2011. Analaysis is done on the basis of constructivist role theory in connection with the Civilian Power concept. Major interest of this study is dedicated to the analysis of the foreign policy repertoire and identity of Germany and France towards the transition countries in North Africa. A question is to be answered if the challenges provoke continuity or change.

What were the relations between our country and far-off South Africa in the second half of the twentieth century? Why and how did the Soviet Union become one of the most important political factors at the tip of the African continent? What was Russia’s role in the changes that South Africa went through at the end of the last century? What were the mutual images that our peoples had of one another? These are the questions that we discuss in this book. It is aimed at the reader who is interested in the history of Africa, in Russia’s relations with the African continent, in Russia’s foreign policy and in the problems of mutual understanding between different peoples and countries.

Chernoh Alpha M. Bah The Ebola Outbreak in West Africa. Corporate Gangsters, Multinationals . Rogue Politicians

In The Ebola Outbreak in West Africa, the award-wining Sierra Leonean journalist, political activist and human rights advocate Chernoh Alpha M. Bah presents an in-depth investigation that challenges the official narrative surrounding the origin and widespread transmission of the 2014 West African Ebola epidemic – one of the most catastrophic human tragedies in the twenty first century. Bah demonstrates with hard evidence that the western narrative, which rashly pinned the origin of the epidemic on a two-year-old boy in a small Guinean village and implicated the backwardness of Africans as the cause for the widespread nature of the outbreak, was neither corroborated nor challenged by Western journalists and the Western academic establishment. He explores why, at the initial stages of the outbreak when thousands of men, women and children were dying, Western media had already settled upon a narrative that blamed and criminalized the victims for the epidemic’s explosion. In this groundbreaking text, Bah establishes the West African outbreak as the continuation of a colonial legacy of multinational corporate exploitation, political corruption, and western dehumanization of the African. Glaringly absent from the official narrative, he argues, is how the billions of dollars of foreign corporate investments existing in West Africa’s natural resource exploitation and the strategic international military and governmental intelligence interests in the region (including billion-dollar a...

Despite previous attempts by former administrations, it was the Bush administration which showed more interest in an economically and politically distressed area for so long. In the light of the international competition over the continent's resources, the United States possesses clear and compelling national interests in Africa. There are vital security, economic, and humanitarian interests, including reliable long-term access to energy, shared largely by the African people and the international community. Yet, despite the rhetoric, did the Bush Administration really work to bring about a fairer and more just Africa? One of the central questions which need to be asked is to what extent did President Bush's policy to help the African nations solidify the overall US policy? Or was his project implementation influenced largely by narrow American realpolitik perspectives thus missing the opportunity to lay the foundation for a well established Wilsonian idealism? Although George W. Bush's administration claimed to have made major new contributions to public health, promoting development, fostering democracy and peace in...

Nkwazi Mhango Africa.s Dependency Syndrome. Can Africa Still Turn Things around for the Better.

There are milliards of off beam assumptions that Africa will always remain immobile in development of whatever type. This view has mainly been propounded by Western thinkers in order to make Africans internalise and reinforce this supposed dependency. Africa needs to embark on paradigm shift; and tweak and turn things around. Africa has what it take to do so quickly, especially now that new economic powers such as China and India are evolving as counterweight to the West. Shall Africa use these new economic forces to its advantage based on fair and win-win cooperation? To do so, Africa must make sure that it does not slink back into business as usual vis-a-vis beggarliness, dependence, frailty, gullibility, made-up backwardness, monkey business, and pipedreams, not to mention the nasty and narcissistic behaviours of its venal and navel-gazing rulers. Verily, Africa needs, inter alia, to use its God-given gifts, namely, immense resources, young population, abundance of vast and unexploited amounts of land. Equally, Africa must, without equivocation, invest copiously and earnestly in its people, the youth in the main. Most of all, Africa needs to shy away from all colonial carryovers and encumbrances. This volume shows many ways through and by which Africa can reverse the current imbroglio-cum-no-go it faces for the better; and thereby actualise the dream of being truly independent and prosperous.

Contemporary Issues in Mental Health Care in sub-Saharan Africa

Seventy percent of the global burden of mental disorders is located in low and middle income countries (LMIC),including sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, in Africa, only 0.62% of the national health budget is allocated to mental health compared to a global median of 2.8% and 5% in Europe. The government is the source of funding in 62%of patients with severe mental disorder in the World Health Organisation (WHO), Africa Region, the lowest of all the WHO regions, and lower compared to a global median of 79%. This is compounded by poor resources, with mental health outpatient facilities in WHO Africa Region being less that 10% of the global median. To address these problems, the WHO launched its Mental Health Action Gap Programme (mhGAP) in 2008, to scale-up mental health services in low and middle income countries (LMIC). The book is directed to all policy makers in sub-Saharan Africa to aid decision making about the urgent need for sustainable and relevant mental health care strategies, and the important areas that need priority. The book should be helpful to local and international researchers in formulating research questions relevant to the African continent and it will be of interest to medical practitioners and students in the region as adjunct to standard text books.

Specifically, the paper explores the insights of the policy and its feasibility in terms of implementation issues and strategies vital to its successful implementation. The paper further validates the realization of the policy in contrast to its implementation being viewed as a mere political rhetoric. The paper emphasizes that policy by itself cannot solve a specific public problem not until it is practically implemented. The paper agrees with the notion that decentralization is indeed a step forward for Zambia. The paper concludes that the Government's commitment to implement the decentralization policy as a priority still remains to be seen just how practically the commitment was to be translated into reality or it could just also be another political rhetoric.

The author, Garifolla Yesim, was born (1947) and raised in Soviet socialist Kazakhstan, emerging thereafter as a top national academic and Kazakhstani senate deputy in the post-Soviet period. Meteorology of tropical West Africa: the Forecasters’ Handbook presents the science and practice of weather forecasting for an important region of the tropics. Connecting basic theory with forecasting practice, the book provides a unique training volume for operational weather forecasters, and is also suitable for students of tropical meteorology. The West African region contains a number of archetypal climatic zones, meaning that the science of its weather and climate applies to many other tropical regions. West Africa also exhibits some of the world’s most remarkable weather systems, making it an inspiring region for students to investigate. The weather of West Africa affects human livelihoods on a daily basis, and can contribute to hardship, poverty and mortality. Therefore, the ability to understand and predict the weather has the potential to deliver significant benefits to both society and economies. The book includes comprehensive background material alongside documentation of weather forecasting methods. Many examples taken from observations of West African weather systems are included and online case-studies are referenced widely.

In the process, the younger of the two, Kakra, is abducted and eventually forcefully conscripted into the Royal West African Frontier Force to fight on the side of the British Empire. The story follows the lot of Kakra as he experiences conflict on two fronts – in what was Italian East Africa and Burma. The narrative also describes the role played by countries in West Africa in the war years prior to the independence of Ghana and other African countries. The role played, and the sacrifices made, by recruits from West Africa, including countries such as Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana, were unquestionably significant, as this book will reveal.World War 2 Revisited is not a dry and clinical history book full of dates and facts. Jonathan Crush, Caroline Skinner, Manal Stulgaitis Rendering South Africa Undesirable. A Critique of Refugee and Informal Sector Policy

To understand the policy environment within which refugees establish and operate their enterprises in South Africa’s informal sector, this report brings together two streams of policy analysis. The first concerns the changing refugee policies and the erosion of the progressive approach that characterized the immediate post-apartheid period. The second concerns the informal sector policy, which oscillates between tolerance and attempted destruction at national and municipal levels. While there have been longstanding tensions between foreign and South African informal sector operators, an overtly anti-foreign migrant sentiment has increasingly been expressed in official policy and practice. This report describes the strategies being used to turn South Africa into an undesirable destination for refugees, including the setting up of additional procedural, administrative and logistical hurdles; the undercutting of court judgments affirming the right of asylum-seekers and refugees to employment and self-employment; ensuring that protection is always temporary by making it extremely difficult for refugees to progress to permanent residence and eventual citizenship; and restricting opportunities to pursue a livelihood in the informal sector. The authors conclude that the protection of refugee rights is likely to continue to depend on a cohort of non-governmental organizations prioritizing migrant livelihood rights and being willing and able to pursue time-consuming and costly litigati...
