There is a dearth of scientific literature on speech recognition for Arabic language. Moreover, most of the research in this area is focused on using Romanized corpus which results in poor accuracy of speech recognition systems. This book presents a study of speech recognition for the Arabic language using a fully-diacritized corpus of an old classic Arabic book called Sahih Al-Bukhari. After comparing the accuracy of the Arabic speech recognition systems using the two types of corpora, this study has shown that better accuracy is achievable using fully-diacritized corpus rather than Romanized corpus. This conclusion can be used as a first step towards developing more accurate Arabic speech recognition systems and to encourage researchers to build extensive library of fully-diacritized corpora of old Arabic books.

This book introduced an approach to design and implement an embedded SoPC (System on Programmable Chip) technique with Altera Nios II processor on a FPGA chip for real-time speech recognition system by developing hardware/software with minimum usage of resources (hardware components) and relatively small size software. This reduces the memory utilization, achieved by using Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) technique as feature extraction combined with its first derivative (∆MFCCs) including power computation of the speech frames (i.e. E,MFCC,∆E,and ∆MFCC), called observation vector of the speech signal. To model the obtained observation, Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) has been used, which is passed to a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) as probabilistic model to process the GMM statistically to take a decision on the uttered words recognition, whether a single or composite, one or more syllable words (i.e. one, six, welcome). The words that are used for training and testing the system included selected English and Arabic words.

Speech disorders, especially hypernasality, are common in children with cleft lip and palate. In order to simplify the diagnosis during the speech therapy of these patients an automatic non-invasive way to measure hypernasality is desirable. In this context, the author analyzes approaches to the detection of hypernasal speech. The focus lies on examining the fitness of several features for that purpose. These include pronunciation features computed from phoneme confusion probabilities, prosodic features, features based on the Teager Energy operator, and Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients. The extraction process of each of these features is described as well as the classification system in which they are tested. Finally, experimental results are presented and discussed. The aim of a speech emotion recognizer is to produce an estimate of the emotional state of the speaker given a speech fragment as an input. In other words we seek a solution for the tricky problem: given a speech fragment how to know what the speaker is feeling, even if she did not intend us to know that. How would it be possible to construct such recognizers? Intuitively, when emotion is experienced, there are physiological changes, for example faster heart rate or higher blood pressure. Some of these physiological changes affect speech production organs and they are in a state different from normal, therefore the speech signal comes out of the mouth distorted as compared to emotionally neutral. Different emotions trigger different physiological changes. Thus, we can record speech in different emotional states, measure acoustic parameters of the wave, form feature vectors from these measurements, divide our data set into the training and the test sets. Train the classifier, say, the decision tree, on the train set and see how well it can predict on the test set.

The present study made an attempt to find out the effect of spectral variations on perception of speech in young normal hearing adults. The study showed that the spectral information between 1500 Hz and 2100 Hz are important for perception of speech in Telugu & was no difference found in lower cut off is important in perception of speech in Telugu compared to English language.The speech identification scores improved with increase in low-pass cut off frequencies and with decrease in high-pass cut off frequencies. The participants obtained speech identification scores of 70% at low-pass cut off frequency of 1500 Hz and at high-pass cut off of 2100 Hz.
