Prevalence of malaria is around 300 million people worldwide with a global death rate over 1.5 million/year. Once prevalent over much of the world, it is now confined to the tropical and subtropical areas of Asia, Africa, South and Central America. Cases of malaria from tropical Africa is around 90% and the rest is 10 %. The logistic, economic and technical factors limit rapid access to microscopic confirmation of malaria in many tropical countries including India. So taking into account of all the factors from our study, we recommend Falcivax HRP2 antigen detection as a tool for diagnosis of malaria in future. Although no test can completely replace the conventional method of peripheral blood smear examination, these newer diagnostic tests can be used as supplement to microscopic examination of peripheral blood smear where the diagnosis cannot be made on microscopy alone. Also, rapid immunochromatography tests can be used in times of urgency and in areas where facilities of microscopy are not available especially during night times when services of laboratory and experienced Microscopists are not available.

Monitoring and diagnosis of electrical machine faults is a scientific and economic issue which is motivated by objectives for reliability and serviceability in electrical drives. This book provides a survey of the techniques used to detect the faults occurring in electrical drives: electrical, thermal and mechanical faults of the electrical machine, faults of the static converter and faults of the energy storage unit. Diagnosis of faults occurring in electrical drives is an essential part of a global monitoring system used to improve reliability and serviceability. This diagnosis is performed with a large variety of techniques: parameter estimation, state observation, Kalman filtering, spectral analysis, neural networks, fuzzy logic, artificial intelligence, etc. Particular emphasis in this book is put on the modeling of the electrical machine in faulty situations. Electrical Machines Diagnosis presents original results obtained mainly by French researchers in different domains. It will be useful as a guideline for the conception of more robust electrical machines and indeed for engineers who have to monitor and maintain electrical drives. As the monitoring and diagnosis of electrical machines is still an open domain, this book will also be very useful to researchers.

In Sub-Saharan Africa decades of development and malaria control have not significantly eliminated the risk of malaria infections. In 2010, 91% of the 655000 malaria deaths occurred in Sub-Saharan Africa. Why has malaria become such a difficult disease to control despite the fact that it is largely preventable and treatable, and the knowledge to do this exists? Development and Malaria Prevention in Rural Ghana provides a critical exploration of the factors that explain why increased policy attention and resource mobilization to malaria control in Sub-Saharan Africa have not led to malaria eradication or drastic reduction in malaria morbidity and mortality. Based on empirical research in Ghana, the book brings into conversation debates from development studies and public health and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of current policy responses to malaria especially in rural Ghana. The book is intended for senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and teachers interested in issues of development and health in Africa. The book will also be a valuable resource for policy makers and development and healthcare practitioners concerned with the fight against malaria.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2013 in the subject Electrotechnology, Warsaw University of Technology (Electrical Engineering), language: English, abstract: 3-Phase induction motors are widely used as a source of mechanical power for effective operation and low costs. The abnormalities have to be detected in advance to avoid the motor breakdown and the cost associated restrain of plant production. This work discusses current and flux leakage spectral analysis techniques for the diagnosis of broken rotor bars and shortcircuited turns in induction motor fed from different AC sources. In spite of recent development of various types of models toward motor faults diagnosis and examining different problems associated with 3-phase induction motors the signal spectral analysis is considered as one of most important approaches. Most of the models from simple equivalent circuit to more complex d-q and a-b-c models and lastly developed hybrid models are provided for the integration of different forms of current and/or voltage unbalance. Generally, techniques that relate to asymmetry identify asymmetrical motor faults.Frequency converters in many applications feed induction motors. Such applications, which play a major role in industry, are growing at a high rate, allow to use 3-phase induction motor as variable speed applications. This paper proposes application of spectral signature analysis for the detection and diagnosis of abnormal electrical and mechanical conditions, which indicates ...

The failure of malaria eradication in Ghana coupled with the prevailing environmental and economic conditions in the Ga East Municipality put majority of the inhabitants at high risk of malaria infection. This book presents the spatial prevalence of malaria and the coping strategies adopted to prevent and treat malaria in the Ga East Municipality. It was observed that the disease has consistently been the most predominant cause of morbidity and places a challenge on the health delivery system in the municipality. The book also shows that an interplay of environmental, economic and anthropogenic factors leads to differentials in vulnerability to malaria infections. Malaria also directly and indirectly affects the potential of an individual to undertake his or her daily economic activities, the ability to participate in community and religious gatherings. Malaria has the tendency of reducing household income and creates emotional and psychological distress. This book therefore identifies the weaknesses associated with the unavailability of basic services in urban fringes and how they affect health conditions. It is therefore recommended for experts who aim at solving health problems.

Malaria is a serious health and economic problem in Africa, afflicting more than half of the continent's population. Although HICV/AIDS, TB and nutritional deficiencies pose major development problems on the continent, the challenges presented by malaria are of a different kind, because the disease is widespread, persistent and grossly underestimated by the general population. The importance of malaria, along with HIV/AIDS and other diseases in the development agenda, is now recognised in Goal 6 of the Millennium Goals. This book provides the evidence required to design and implement malaria control strategies in Africa. The chapters analyse the nexus between poverty and malaria with a focus on policies that can be implemented at various levels of society to fight the disease. Malaria and Poverty in Africa is the outcome of a research sponsored by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). Augustin Kwasi Fosu is the Director, Economic Division of the United Nations Commision for Africa, Addis Ababa, and former Director of Research at the AERC, Nairobi. Germano Mwabu is Professor of Economics at the University of Nairobi. He was co-director of the AERC project on Poverty Income Distribution and Labour Markets in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Master's Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Health Science, grade: sehr gut, University of Bonn (Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät), 116 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Malaria as a disease of the poorest in the world is on the global agenda. Many different groups take efforts in order to tackle malaria. Facing the fact that mainly children and pregnant women present the biggest problems it is difficult to maintain a logical way in order to improve the malaria situation. Therefore, organization and coordination of the efforts is an area of improvement. For example, various Public Private Partnerships have partly identical missions (e.g. GAVI and MVI), and there is good reason for combining their efforts and save administrative resources. The first step in a logic chain should be to provide better diagnostic features for the correct detection of malaria with the consequence of an adequate treatment. Country surveillance programs need to be set up in order follow resistance patterns, treatment effects, demographic patterns etc. In parallel better therapeutic and preventive measures need to be developed in order to win the race against resistance of vectors as well as parasites. All these efforts need to be planned, coordinated, managed and regulated. This requests one global coordinator with an "umbrella function" that defines rules for all partners involved and manages the cooperation. The umbrella function should sit with...

Malaria has become a great concern globally and has impacted negatively on the economies of developing nations. Health workers generally are unable to identify high or risk areas in the areas they operate so as to tailor interventions and do effective health monitoring. Research conducted so far by medical and climate professionals have either lacked knowledge or showed less concern for the variation of the climate conditions that accompany the transmission of malaria. The geographical distribution of any major disease forms an important basis for locating appropriate interventions for its control and a means to monitoring their effectiveness. There is a need for a risk map to draw attention to hot spots and areas where intervention measures can be tailored to improve the monitoring of the occurrences, distribution and control of malaria in different geographical areas and time periods. In this book Geographic information System (GIS) and other spatial statistical approach like Bayesian and Poison methods is utilized to correlate the factors that are associated with these spatial and temporal heterogeneity of malaria transmission at the different geographic locations.

I have observed unique variations in AC electrical conductivity of solids by dielectric analysis (DEA or DETA) when studied with respect to temperature and frequency. A wide range of solids were examined for this study e.g. organics, polymers, carbohydrates, API’s (active pharmacy ingredients) and amino acids. Experimental results clearly show novel dielectric behavior of a linear increase in a log ionic conductivity vs. temperature in the pre-melt (20 to 30oC below the melt temperature) and melt transition regions. To explore the cause and effect relationship between structure and enhanced electrical conductivity, we have conducted a number of reactions with and without the AC dielectric field to ascertain if it is affecting the reaction rate or products. The most predominant reaction of all experiments to date was of a reducing amino acid and carbohydrate which showed enhanced reaction rate in the dielectric field. Dielectric analyses of the materials were further investigated by evaluating malaria driven proteins and poly peptides to develop a sensor for detecting malaria.

Cultivation of malaria parasites is an important tool for the understanding of parasite biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, and pharmacology. Malaria represents the world's greatest public health problem in terms of number of people affected, levels of morbidity and mortality. The protozoan malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.) are transmitted by infected female mosquitoes when feeding on blood. Parasites soon enter liver cells, and after several days of multiplication, are released into the bloodstream where further cycles of asexual reproduction occur, giving rise to the clinical symptoms of malaria. Some erythrocytic parasites will differentiate into presexual forms (gametocytes), which when taken up by mosquitoes in further blood meals, mature into gametes and undergo a sexual cycle Malaria is one of the most important infectious diseases affecting humans particularly in developing countries. P. falciparum an apicomplexan protozoan parasite is the causative agent of the most lethal form of human malaria.

Reticulocytosis is an important previously unappreciated surrogate marker of recent Plasmodium falciparum reticulocyte parasitation. Evidence from studies in murine and primate models show increased prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum parasitisation of reticulocytes. The increase in reticulocyte infection has been attributed to compensatory reticulocytosis and increased parasite densities. However, the prevalence of P. falciparum parasitisation of reticulocytes in human populations in holoendemic areas of malaria is unknown. Therefore, the current study examined the prevalence of P. falciparum parasitation of reticulocytes and its association with clinical, parasitological and haematological outcomes in children and adults with acute P. falciparum malaria and healthy malaria -ve controls from a holoendemic area of malaria of western Kenya. Results of this study demonstrate higher prevalence of reticulocyte parasitation in children. Thus, it seems likely that P. falciparum reticulocyte parasitation leads to a burst in compensatory reticulocytosis in acute paediatric malaria predictable by HDP and a febrile illness among children

Despite over a hundred years of drug development, malaria remains one of the most devastating infectious diseases in the world, both in terms of mortality and morbidity, and its worldwide occurrence in tropical and subtropical regions. During the last few decades, chloroquine and other aminoquinolines were the front-line antimalarial agents because of their excellent therapeutic efficacy and lower cost. However, the emergence and spread of resistance of malaria parasite, especially, most deadly species, P. falciparum towards currently available drugs, especially chloroquine, has become a major health concern around the globe and therefore, development of new chemotherapeutic agents is an urgent need to fight against resistant malaria.

Enteric coatings allow the drug delivery system to pass through the stomach intact and dissolve upon reaching the intestine. Chloroquine is very cheap and, until recently, was very effective and the first choice for malaria treatment. Side effects include gastrointestinal problems such as stomach ache, itch, headache and blurred vision. Enteric coating prevent the drug release in the stomach preventing gastric irritation and mask the bitter taste of drug. so It has long been used in the treatment or prevention of malaria.

India is becoming the diabetic capital of the world. The economic burden of diabetes and its complications are enormous. Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) and Post Prandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) has always been the test of choice for diagnosis of diabetes though Oral Glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is considered often. But the trend of using HbA1c for diagnosis is not there in India although HbA1c is very often used for monitoring of diabetes. Many a time a clinician cannot rely on the laboratory reports for fasting sugar, resulting in under-diagnosis or over diagnosis of diabetes. After dealing with both the clinical and research aspect of diabetes for many years, we understand that diagnosis of diabetes and prevention of its complications among patient have always remained a challenge for Indian doctors. Though HbA1c have been advocated by several global associations for diagnosis of diabetes, it is not utilized in India. The book presents HbA1c in Indian scenario followed by a critical comparison between HbA1c, FBG and OGTT. It describes how and why HbA1c excels as a diagnostic test for diabetes among Indians, and how it can serve as a single biomarker for diagnosis and monitoring diabetes.

This study was conducted for a period of 18 months ( March 2006 - August 2007) to cover 54 villages served by three health care centers (Wadi Alhayah, Alfarsha and Albugaa) Situation analysis was done for the last 10 years (1996 - 2005) and parasitological surveys were carried out, including, passive case detection (PCD) and rapid diagnostic test (RDT), so as to determine the disease prevalence and distribution. Simultaneously, an entomological survey was conducted to study the malaria vector population dynamics and disease relation. The retrospective study showed a relative decline in the annual reported slide positivity rate (SPR) of malaria cases from 1996 onwards. Two species of malaria parasites were reported, the first of which P. falciparum constituted the major cause of this disease in the study area, whereas, P. vivax the second one was confirmed in only 4 imported cases by non Saudi persons during the last ten years. The parasitological study (PCD and RDT) has documented low level of malaria infection (2.7% and 0.44%, respectively).

Vector borne diseases transmitted through ticks and mosquitos cause serious loss of life and significantly impact human populations worldwide. Each of these diseases is caused by a distinct pathogen, and symptoms vary depending on the type and severity of infection. The spread of these diseases occur through the blood meals of tick or mosquitos, where the pathogen gains access to the human body, usually triggering an immune response that contributes to disease progression. Understanding the interdependence of pathogen to disease vector along with transmission route to humans shapes our diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. This book focuses on five distinct examples of vector borne disease: Malaria, West Nile, Lyme disease, dengue fever, and bubonic plaque. Malaria involves the mosquito vector and occurs when mosquito transmit the Plasmodium parasite to humans. West Nile and dengue fever also involve different mosquito vectors, but in this case transmission of the West Nile virus or dengue fever virus cause disease. Fleas transmit the bubonic plague causing bacterium Y. pestis. Lyme disease results from the transmission of the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi to humans through the bit of a tick. In each case we consider current and future issues related to disease progression, diagnosis, and treatments.

Malaria is a persistent public health problem and is the leading cause of death among young African children, killing one child every second. The disease also seriously affects children’s future: they may suffer neurological after-effects and impaired learning ability. Malaria is hyper-endemic in Ghana. It remains a major public health problem, requiring focused interventions including prompt and effective scientific studies. Therefore, this study, applied a binary logistic regression model to analyze predictors influencing malaria in-hospital mortality using inpatient morbidity and mortality returns register from the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the northern region of Ghana. The study comprised five chapters in all. The results showed that there is a linear relationship between malaria mortality and the predictors. Again, it was found that the predictors; referral status, distance, treatment type and length of stay were relevant in predicting malaria mortality. This book, therefore, provides a scientific resource for health personnel, the health ministries, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other stakeholders in the public health sector.

Allergy in the perioperative period is an important clinical problem. Unfortunately, due to the lack of guidelines for the recognition and diagnosis of allergy/hypersensitivity, there are still no epidemiological data on this issue. Hypersensitivity to anesthetic drugs remains a substantial hazard for patients at increased risk because it is difficult to promptly recognize; consequently, the proper treatment may be delayed. In addition, the lack of specific molecular markers for confirmation of anaphylaxis impedes accurate diagnosis.
