Keith David Watenpaugh Being Modern in the Middle East. Revolution, Nationalism, Colonialism, and the Arab Middle Class

In this innovative book, Keith Watenpaugh connects the question of modernity to the formation of the Arab middle class. The book explores the rise of a middle class of liberal professionals, white-collar employees, journalists, and businessmen during the first decades of the twentieth century in the Arab Middle East and the ways its members created civil society, and new forms of politics, bodies of thought, and styles of engagement with colonialism. Discussions of the middle class have been largely absent from historical writings about the Middle East. Watenpaugh fills this lacuna by drawing on Arab, Ottoman, British, American and French sources and an eclectic body of theoretical literature and shows that within the crucible of the Young Turk Revolution of 1908, World War I, and the advent of late European colonialism, a discrete middle class took shape. It was defined not just by the wealth, professions, possessions, or the levels of education of its members, but also by the way they asserted their modernity. Using the ethnically and religiously diverse middle class of the cosmopolitan city of Aleppo, Syria, as a point of departure, Watenpaugh explores the larger political and social implications of what being modern meant in the non-West in the first half of the twentieth century. Well researched and provocative, Being Modern in the Middle East makes a critical contribution not just to Middle East history, but also to the global study of class, mass violence, ideas, and r...

"...a fresh and an important contribution ...this book presents an ethnographically rich and conceptually strong account of recent transformations in the educational field and their implications for class relations in Turkey." · Middle East JournalMiddle classes are by definition ambiguous, raising all sorts of paradoxical questions, perceived and real, about their power and place relative to those above and below them in a class-structured society. Focusing on families of the new middle class in Istanbul, the authors of this study address questions about the social construction of middle-class reality in the context of the rapid changes that have come about through recent economic growth in global markets and the global diffusion of information technology. After 1980, Turkey saw a structural transformation from state-owned and managed industry, banking, and media and communications to privatization and open markets. The idea of being middle class and the reality of middle-class practices became open for negotiation and interpretation. This study therefore offers a particularly interesting case study of an emergent global phenomenon known as the transnational middle class, characterized by their location of work in globalizing cities, development of transnational social networks, sumptuary consumption habits, and residences in gated communities. As the authors show, this new middle class associates quality education, followed by property and lifestyle issues, with the...

Suitably Modern traces the growth of a new middle class in Kathmandu as urban Nepalis harness the modern cultural resources of mass media and consumer goods to build modern identities and pioneer a new sociocultural space in one of the world's "least developed countries." Since Nepal's "opening" in the 1950s, a new urban population of bureaucrats, service personnel, small business owners, and others have worked to make a space between Kathmandu's old (and still privileged) elites and its large (and growing) urban poor. Mark Liechty looks at the cultural practices of this new middle class, examining such phenomena as cinema and video viewing, popular music, film magazines, local fashion systems, and advertising. He explores three interactive and mutually constitutive ethnographic terrains: a burgeoning local consumer culture, a growing mass-mediated popular imagination, and a recently emerging youth culture. He shows how an array of local cultural narratives--stories of honor, value, prestige, and piety--flow in and around global narratives of "progress," modernity, and consumer fulfillment. Urban Nepalis simultaneously adopt and critique these narrative strands, braiding them into local middle-class cultural life. Building on both Marxian and Weberian understandings of class, this study moves beyond them to describe the lived experience of "middle classness"--how class is actually produced and reproduced in everyday practice. It con...

This book aims to analyze the relationship between mass movement in Moscow in the period from 2011 until 2013 and emergence of middle class in the State. The main objective of the work is to prove that Financial Economic Crisis of 2008-2010 gave a sufficient impetus for the middle class in Russia to join the protest movement against unfair elections. In work the attempt to find an answer to the questions such as the reason why middle class joined protests in 2011, what processes preconditioned this mass decision and why the protests did not go further is made. The hypothesis is formulated as following: in the basis of middle class social discontent and their accession to the protests in 2011-2013 lies economic situation, which emerged in the country after financial and economic crisis, 2008-2010 rather than political engagement. The work clarifies the importance of living standards and Western democratic approach to the market and policy in Russia from the side of middle class and also opens up new questions which aim deeper investigation.

America has a long tradition of middle-class radicalism, albeit one that intellectual orthodoxy has tended to obscure. The Radical Middle Class seeks to uncover the democratic, populist, and even anticapitalist legacy of the middle class. By examining in particular the independent small business sector or petite bourgeoisie, using Progressive Era Portland, Oregon, as a case study, Robert Johnston shows that class still matters in America. But it matters only if the politics and culture of the leading player in affairs of class, the middle class, is dramatically reconceived. This book is a powerful combination of intellectual, business, labor, medical, and, above all, political history. Its author also humanizes the middle class by describing the lives of four small business owners: Harry Lane, Will Daly, William U'Ren, and Lora Little. Lane was Portland's reform mayor before becoming one of only six senators to vote against U.S. entry into World War I. Daly was Oregon's most prominent labor leader and a onetime Socialist. U'Ren was the national architect of the direct democracy movement. Little was a leading antivaccinationist. The Radical Middle Class further explores the Portland Ku Klux Klan and concludes with a national overview of the American middle class from the Progressive Era to the present. With its engaging narrative, conceptual richness, and daring argumentation, it will be welcomed by all who understand that reexamining the middle class can yield...

In The Twilight of the Middle Class, Andrew Hoberek challenges the commonly held notion that post-World War II American fiction eschewed the economic for the psychological or the spiritual. Reading works by Ayn Rand, Ralph Ellison, Saul Bellow, Phillip Roth, Flannery O'Connor, Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, and others, he shows how both the form and content of postwar fiction responded to the transformation of the American middle class from small property owners to white-collar employees. In the process, he produces "compelling new accounts of identity politics and postmodernism that will be of interest to anyone who reads or teaches contemporary fiction. Hoberek argues that despite the financial gains and job security enjoyed by the postwar middle class, the transition to white-collar employment paved the way for its current precarious state in a country marked by increasingly deep class divisions. Postwar fiction provided the middle class with various imaginative substitutes for its former property-owning independence, substitutes that since then have not only allowed but abetted this class's downward mobility. To read this fiction in the light of the middle-class experience is thus not only to restore the severed connections between literary and economic "history in the second half of the twentieth "century, but to explore the roots of the contemporary crisis of the middle class.

Jonathan Elukin Living Together, Living Apart. Rethinking Jewish-Christian Relations in the Middle Ages

This book challenges the standard conception of the Middle Ages as a time of persecution for Jews. Jonathan Elukin traces the experience of Jews in Europe from late antiquity through the Renaissance and Reformation, revealing how the pluralism of medieval society allowed Jews to feel part of their local communities despite recurrent expressions of hatred against them. Elukin shows that Jews and Christians coexisted more or less peacefully for much of the Middle Ages, and that the violence directed at Jews was largely isolated and did not undermine their participation in the daily rhythms of European society. The extraordinary picture that emerges is one of Jews living comfortably among their Christian neighbors, working with Christians, and occasionally cultivating lasting friendships even as Christian culture often demonized Jews. As Elukin makes clear, the expulsions of Jews from England, France, Spain, and elsewhere were not the inevitable culmination of persecution, but arose from the religious and political expediencies of particular rulers. He demonstrates that the history of successful Jewish-Christian interaction in the Middle Ages in fact laid the social foundations that gave rise to the Jewish communities of modern Europe. Elukin compels us to rethink our assumptions about this fascinating period in history, offering us a new lens through which to appreciate the rich complexities of the Jewish experience in medieval Christendom.

Too often, says Jennifer L. Goloboy, we equate being middle class with "niceness"--a set of values frozen in the antebellum period and centered on long-term economic and social progress and a close, nurturing family life. Goloboy's case study of merchants in Charleston, South Carolina, looks to an earlier time to establish the roots of middle-class culture in America. She argues for a definition more applicable to the ruthless pursuit of profit in the early republic. To be middle class then was to be skilled at survival in the market economy. What prompted cultural shifts in the early middle class, Goloboy shows, were market conditions. In Charleston, deference and restraint were the bywords of the colonial business climate, while rowdy ambition defined the post-Revolutionary era, which in turn gave way to institution building and professionalism in antebellum times. Goloboy's research also supports a view of the Old South as neither precapitalist nor isolated from the rest of American culture, and it challenges the idea that post-Revolutionary Charleston was a port in decline by reminding us of a forgotten economic boom based on slave trading, cotton exporting, and trading as a neutral entity amid warring European states. This fresh look at Charleston's merchants lets us rethink the middle class in light of the new history of capitalism and its commitment to reintegrating the Old South into the world economy.

The American middle class is currently in a state of jeopardy. We are in need of a powerful robust labor movement to reverse the economic inequality we are facing in the U.S.—and this may be our last opportunity in the foreseeable future to do so.In How the Working Class Can Help the Middle Class: Reintroducing Non-Majority Collective Bargaining to the American Workplace, Charles Morris brings forth the compelling argument that the best means to restore economic balance and support for the American middle class is by promoting and reestablishing the long-forgotten process of non-majority collective bargaining. That process, which can be made available without further legislation, is based on extensive studies and widespread support for its legal foundation. How the Working Class Can Help the Middle Class also illustrates how employer opposition has stalled these efforts and why we must significantly move toward a revival of a strong and healthy labor movement to provide a better life for the middle class—now.

California during the gold rush was a place of disputed claims, shoot-outs, gambling halls, and prostitution; a place populated by that rough and rebellious figure, the forty-niner; in short, a place that seems utterly unconnected to middle-class culture. In American Alchemy, however, Brian Roberts offers a surprising challenge to this assumption.Roberts points to a long-neglected truth of the gold rush: many of the northeastern forty-niners who ventured westward were in fact middle-class in origin, status, and values. Tracing the experiences and adventures both of these men and of the "unseen" forty-niners--women who stayed back East while their husbands went out West--he shows that, whatever else the gold seekers abandoned on the road to California, they did not simply turn their backs on middle-class culture.Ultimately, Roberts argues, the story told here reveals an overlooked chapter in the history of the formation of the middle class. While the acquisition of respectability reflects one stage in this history, he says, the gold rush constitutes a second stage--a rebellion against standards of respectability.

In Black Corona, Steven Gregory examines political culture and activism in an African-American neighborhood in New York City. Using historical and ethnographic research, he challenges the view that black urban communities are "socially disorganized." Gregory demonstrates instead how working-class and middle-class African Americans construct and negotiate complex and deeply historical political identities and institutions through struggles over the built environment and neighborhood quality of life. With its emphasis on the lived experiences of African Americans, Black Corona provides a fresh and innovative contribution to the study of the dynamic interplay of race, class, and space in contemporary urban communities. It questions the accuracy of the widely used trope of the dysfunctional "black ghetto," which, the author asserts, has often been deployed to depoliticize issues of racial and economic inequality in the United States. By contrast, Gregory argues that the urban experience of African Americans is more diverse than is generally acknowledged and that it is only by attending to the history and politics of black identity and community life that we can come to appreciate this complexity. This is the first modern ethnography to focus on black working-class and middle-class life and politics. Unlike books that enumerate the ways in which black communities have been rendered powerless by urban political processes and by changing urban economies, Black Corona...

Changes in economic and social sphere of such Central Eastern Europe (further in the text - CEE) countries as Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia during the last decade, their integration into the European Union, and also the influence of globalization factors demand the statistical evaluation and the development of a new research methodology. The population of these countries rightfully expects from the entrance into the Europe Union the raise of their living standard. The underestimation of the significance of the living standard of the population can turn into social tensity and population mistrust to national and regional authorities. In this connection, supplying administrative bodies of all levels and also country population with authentic information about processes taking place in the social sphere in whole, and, in particular, about the living standard, becomes one of the most important tasks.

Document from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Social System, Social Structure, Class, Social Stratification, University of Poznan (Institute of Sociology), language: English, abstract: The book tests the double hypothesis of the death of the middle class. Using U.S. and other developed and developing countries' materials, it seeks to answer whether the popular thesis on its demise is true, and second, it shows it is true in a conceptual sense, viz. , the term in question is a misnomer, referring to a stratum rather than a class. In the course of those investigations other key questions are examined, such as an all-important issue of socio-economic inequality: both in national and world context. The study is underpinned by an original conceptual framework encompassing social class and estate theories and ownership theory. This makes it possible to criticise many other approaches to the problems analysed. For instance, a critique of a well-known book by the French economist Th. Picketty has been undertaken, showing its numerous flaws. In addition, the analysis of the middle class concept demonstrates its defects manifest in its various definitions and usages.

This book comprises a sociolinguistic analysis of a number of phonological and morphosyntactic features characteristic of the Maracucho dialect-spoken in Maracaibo, Venezuela- present in the speech of men and women from three socioeconomic status groups: upper-working class, lower-middle class, and middle-middle class. The dialect of Maracuchos is stigmatized in Venezuela, which has caused speakers from certain socioeconomic status groups to avoid traditionally distinguishing features. As a result, some of the linguistic features that characterize it vary from one social class to another. Numerous researchers have studied the linguistic features of the varieties of Spanish spoken in Venezuela. However, the variety spoken in Maracaibo has been neglected and consequently, its linguistic features have not been described. Therefore, the results of this study represent a valuable contribution to the sociolinguistic background of Venezuelan Spanish,, more specifically of the Spanish spoken in Maracaibo, contributing to a better understanding of its people and their dialect. It also provides a basis for future research on other features and language varieties in the country.

The first chapter of this thesis is concerned with measure and probability theory from a Nonstandard Analysis point of view. First we give an overview of general facts in Nonstandard Analysis. The second part of the first chapter is about internal measure spaces. Then we apply these results to the Brownian Motion and show that the Brownian Motion can be obtained as an infinitesimal random walk. In the next part we show for a big class of functions and processes on probability spaces in the nonstandard universe that they in a certain sense correspond to standard entities. In the second chapter we give some applications of nonstandard stochastics in mathematical finance. First we look at European call options in the Cox Ross- Rubinstein model and in the Black-Scholes model. Then we introduce the hyperfinite Cox-Ross- Rubinstein model, where we use random walks with infinitesimal time steps. The hyperfinite Cox-Ross- Rubinstein model extends the ordinary Cox-Ross- Rubinstein model and inherits many of its properties. Then we show that the Black- Scholes model is precisely the standard part of the hyperfinite Cox-Ross-Rubinstein model.

In this third volume of "A Course in Analysis", two topics indispensible for every mathematician are treated: Measure and Integration Theory; and Complex Function Theory. In the first part measurable spaces and measure spaces are introduced and Caratheodory's extension theorem is proved. This is followed by the construction of the integral with respect to a measure, in particular with respect to the Lebesgue measure in the Euclidean space. The Radon–Nikodym theorem and the transformation theorem are discussed and much care is taken to handle convergence theorems with applications, as well as Lp-spaces.Integration on product spaces and Fubini's theorem is a further topic as is the discussion of the relation between the Lebesgue integral and the Riemann integral. In addition to these standard topics we deal with the Hausdorff measure, convolutions of functions and measures including the Friedrichs mollifier, absolutely continuous functions and functions of bounded variation. The fundamental theorem of calculus is revisited, and we also look at Sard's theorem or the Riesz–Kolmogorov theorem on pre-compact sets in Lp-spaces.The text can serve as a companion to lectures, but it can also be used for self-studying. This volume includes more than 275 problems solved completely in detail which should help the student further.

A reading of the periodicals of Eighteenth-century England offers us a fascinating insight into the way the literate upper and upper-middle classes thought about themselves, press freedom and tolerance, social class and revolution, their nation and its relations with others, science, religion and morality, gender and the natural world. England in its heyday, despite the archaic nature of its institutions, if judged from a modern standpoint, was often critical of itself and able to carry out debate in an enviably free public sphere. Based on an analysis of a representative cross-section of the periodicals, reflecting the opinions, not of famous writers but of a broad swathe of this class, mostly based in London, this book reveals their surprising open-mindedness.

In Gender, Class, and Freedom in Modern Political Theory, Nancy Hirschmann demonstrates not merely that modern theories of freedom are susceptible to gender and class analysis but that they must be analyzed in terms of gender and class in order to be understood at all. Through rigorous close readings of major and minor works of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, and Mill, Hirschmann establishes and examines the gender and class foundations of the modern understanding of freedom. Building on a social constructivist model of freedom that she developed in her award-winning book The Subject of Liberty: Toward a Feminist Theory of Freedom, she makes in her new book another original and important contribution to political and feminist theory. Despite the prominence of "state of nature" ideas in modern political theory, Hirschmann argues, theories of freedom actually advance a social constructivist understanding of humanity. By rereading "human nature" in light of this insight, Hirschmann uncovers theories of freedom that are both more historically accurate and more relevant to contemporary politics. Pigeonholing canonical theorists as proponents of either "positive" or "negative" liberty is historically inaccurate, she demonstrates, because theorists deploy both conceptions of freedom simultaneously throughout their work.

On the first day of spring of the new millennium, a minister's son had a profound experience of the Creator. Instead of coming as the Christian God, the Divine manifested as The Great Spirit. What was wrong with civilization? The journey into modern society began, as the Original Wisdom confronted Western, middle class culture. The dominant mind of knowledge that we take for granted was suddenly naked. There is a contemporary yearning for real spiritual experience, outside of formal, intellectual religion. The Creator broke all the rules. Strange events conformed to meaning that came from the 'heart.' Coincidences, past lives, soul stories, dreams, and visions fused with a modern, secular life story. What is outside of the invisible box that we call civilization? Escape mind culture, and truly understand what it means to live within the Creation in Time.

2013 Reprint of 1905 10th Revised and Enlarged Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This is a revised and enlarged edition of a book whose charm is difficult to express in a paragraph. It is so packed with thought, so attractive in style, so rich in comparative illustrations of Oriental and Occidental ways of looking at things, but never bigoted or narrow. "Bushido" is the Japanese feudal equivalent of "chivalry." It embodies the maxims of educational training brought to bear on the Samurai, or warrior class of Japan, the class that throughout the nation's feudal age set the standard for the whole population in manners, ideals of character and mental and moral codes of obligation. Bushido was an organic growth of centuries of military careers. It is unwritten, like the English Constitution, yet of it has grown modern Japan. Nitobe presents Bushido not just as a martial discipline, but as a pervasive system of ethics and morals and a living school of thought, life and ideals that can draw strength from the past to advance the present and future. Bushido has no set dogma, but consists of qualities and practices such as courage, benevolence, politeness, veracity, sincerity, honour, loyalty and self-control, all of which he examines.

Barbara M. Benedict Making the Modern Reader. Cultural Mediation in Early Modern Literary Anthologies

4602 руб.
Inquiring into the formation of a literary canon during the Restoration and the eighteenth century, Barbara Benedict poses the question, "Do anthologies reflect or shape contemporary literary taste?" She finds that there was a cultural dialectic at work: miscellanies and anthologies transmitted particular tastes while in turn being influenced by the larger culture they helped to create. Benedict reveals how anthologies of the time often created a consensus of literary and aesthetic values by providing a bridge between the tastes of authors, editors, printers, booksellers, and readers.Making the Modern Reader, the first full treatment of the early modern anthology, is in part a history of the London printing trade as well as of the professionalization of criticism. Benedict thoroughly documents the historical redefinition of the reader: once a member of a communal literary culture, the reader became private and introspective, morally and culturally shaped by choices in reading. She argues that eighteenth-century collections promised the reader that culture could be acquired through the absorption of literary values. This process of cultural education appealed to a middle class seeking to become discriminating consumers of art.By addressing this neglected genre, Benedict contributes a new perspective on the tension between popular and high culture, between the common reader and the elite. This book will interest scholars working in cultural studies and those studying no...

Told in three parts: 1) Revolutions from pre-Islamic Arabia to the Ottoman Turks, 2) The imperial powers’ establishing footprints in the Middle East in the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, and 3) American presidents and their inability to fully comprehend the complexities of the Middle East since World War II. This narrative is told in a very personal manner, borne of on-the-ground experience in those lands, an essential read for anyone wishing to comprehend the story of the Middle East present, past and future.
