This title focuses on two significant problems in the field of automatic control, in particular state estimation and robust Model Predictive Control under input and state constraints, bounded disturbances and measurement noises. The authors build upon previous results concerning zonotopic set-membership state estimation and output feedback tube-based Model Predictive Control. Various existing zonotopic set-membership estimation methods are investigated and their advantages and drawbacks are discussed, making this book suitable both for researchers working in automatic control and industrial partners interested in applying the proposed techniques to real systems. The authors proceed to focus on a new method based on the minimization of the P-radius of a zonotope, in order to obtain a good trade-off between the complexity and the accuracy of the estimation. They propose a P-radius based set-membership estimation method to compute a zonotope containing the real states of a system, which are consistent with the disturbances and measurement noise. The problem of output feedback control using a zonotopic set-membership estimation is also explored. Many problems in tracking control have been identified over the years, such as the availability of systems states, the presence of noise and system uncertainties, and speed of response, just to name a few.This research is concerned with developing novel integrated control and estimation algorithms to overcome some of these problems in order to achieve an efficient tracking performance. Since there are some significant advantages associated with Sliding Mode Control (SMC) or Variable Structure Control (VSC), (fast regulation rate and robustness to uncertainties), this research reviews and extends new filtering concepts for state estimation, referred to as the Variable Structure Filter (VSF) and Smooth Variable Structure Filter (SVSF). The VSF is combined seamlessly with the SMC to produce an integrated controller called a Sliding Mode Controller and Filter (SMCF). This new controller is shown to be a robust and effective integrated control strategy for linear systems. For nonlinear systems, a novel integrated control strategy called the Smooth Sliding Mode Controller and Filter (SSMCF), fuses the SMC and SVSF in a particular form to address nonlinearities.

The phenomenon of loss of lock in tracking systems is ubiquitous in engineering practice. However, the key problem of loss of lock in non-causal estimation or smoothing is a marked exception in this well researched area. The methods that were developed for the treatment of the former are not suitable for the analysis of the latter problem. The main purpose of this research is to provide the missing theory and investigate the phenomenon of loss of lock in smoothers. We concentrate in this dissertation on the carrier phase estimation problem, a benchmark problem in nonlinear estimation.Our results include an asymptotic computation of the mean time to lose lock (MTLL) in the optimal minimum noise energy (MNE) smoother. We show that the MTLL in the first and second order smoother is significantly longer than that in the causal phase locked loop(PLL). We give a complete description of the steady state error regime in linear and nonlinear smoothers, in case the inputs are polynomial in time. We show that the steady-state error in the optimal smoother is significantly smaller than that in the optimal filter.

Magnetic fields of up to 33 T where applied to samples at temperatures between 0.25 K and 10 K.In nonmagnetic quantum wells optically detected cyclotron resonance was used to determine basic properties such as effective mass and mobility of GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells. In CdTe/CdMgTe quantum wells evidence for the singlet and triplet state of the negatively and positively charged exciton was found at high magnetic fields. In a highly n-type doped GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well, signatures of the fractional quantum hall effect were observed in PL and ODR data. Also shake up processes in a variety of quantum wells are discussed.In magnetic quantum wells, cusps in the exciton shift are present at moderate magnetic fields which could be assigned to next nearest neighbor interactions between Mn2+ ion pairs and single ions. Resonances in InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots induced by far-infrared radiation have been observed optically. They were studied in quantum dots with different confinement potential and under a series of tilting angles between sample normal and magnetic field direction.
