Amanuel Kussia Integration of Population Variables into Rural Development Programs with Ethiopian Case

Scientific Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, , language: English, abstract: The main purpose of this essay is to examine the integrations between population variables and rural development in general and food security in particular. A critical review of literature and analysis of secondary data were carried out to understand these dynamic linkages. For all nations, people are the ultimate and the only recipient of development results. Even if the population variables are decisive planning inputs, however, they were ignored and treated as exogenous factors in the process of development planning during the 1950s and 1960s. And so, the resultant problems such as poverty, unemployment, inequality, and other social ills were pervasive and deep-rooted in rural areas of the developing countries. The major reason for this tragedy was belived to be the failure of development theories, policies, and approaches adopted during the 1950s and 60s. It was during the 1970s that the issue of integrating population factors into development planning attracted the attention of some international organizations (such as UN) and vigorously advocated since then. Therefore, so as to balance the pace of the population growth and rural development process, all development actors in Ethiopia should adopt holistic and synergetic approaches in such a way that enhance agricultural productivity and boost investment in rural social a...

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Economic Geography, grade: Pass, Lund University (Department of social and economic geography), 66 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This thesis is a qualitative study of the golf course development in the village of Bara in Skåne. The focus of the analysis is on sustainability, neo-liberalism and planning. It is focused on two themes, namely use of place, which involves aspects of social sustainability, neo-liberalism and planning and impacts on the environment/landscape, which involves ecological sustainability and planning/traffic planning issues. Different theories are used in order to analyse the two themes in the context of the golf course development in Bara. The theories used here are built on academic literature about social and ecological sustainability, planning theory and neo-liberalism. Perkins' theory of commodification of rural spaces, Selberg's model of less impact in the environment by traffic, Clokes and Lapping's theoretical aspects of planning and rural planning, Chan and Lee's theory on social sustainability and Marsden's and Buttel's theory on rural sustainability are of special interest in this thesis. The development in Bara is strongly connected to the local environment and to aspects of economic development. It is therefore important to investigate this kind of rural development to see what impact it has on the environmental and...

Urban areas are growing at a very fast pace. Hence, Planning, development and management of urban areas, especially in the developing countries gain prime importance.Accuracy of the information is the prime requirement for Planning, development and management of the land parcels especially in the urban areas where the land is scarce. Hence there is a need to organize spatial information system for urban planning and management. A land information system gives support to land planning and management by providing information about the land, the resources upon it and the improvements made to it. Already existing Information systems like National Urban Information System (NUIS), Land Management Information System (LMIS) and Spatial Data Infrastructure(SDI) has been studied and found to be devoid of certain information for effective utilization.Hence an Integrated Information System with comprehensive land information system has been developed for urban planning, development and management at different Planning Levels. In addition, a plot level L.I.S has been generated in Geographical Information System (GIS) platform for effective implementation.

All of the studies were part of the Middle Level EducationResearch SIG's National Middle Grades Research Project (NMGRP) on Common Planning Time, which provides additional evidence about teachers' understandings, experiences, the benefits andbarriers about CPT.Since all researchers participating in the SIG-sponsored project utilized the same datacollection protocols and followed the same protocols, the overall data collection was systematic and is highly reliable. Five researchquestions were generated to guide the development of the data collection protocols. While the authors were encouraged to use their datato address these project-level questions, they were not required to do so. The project consisted of both qualitative and quantitative datacollection. Phase I (qualitative) consisted of observations of CPT meetings and structured interviews with teachers. Phase II (quantitative)was comprised of an online teacher survey. Within the chapters of this volume, a variety of relevant and meaningful research questionsare examined utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

Development Naivety and Emergent Insecurities in a Monopolised World. The Politics and Sociology of Development in Contemporary Africa

It is common knowledge that development without security is like a runaway horse. Yet, development in Africa has been plagued by insecurities since the extractive periods of slave trade and colonialism. In spite of political independence and the euphoria of sovereignty as states, Africa has failed to address insecurity, which continues to loom large and to threaten aspirations towards truly inclusive and sustainable development. A consequence has been Africa’s development naivety vis-à-vis the monopolisation of development by the predatory elite actors of the global North and their local facilitators. To salvage the continent from such predation and the insecurities engendered requires novel and innovative imagination and praxis. This book draws from both the haunted landscapes and bitter memories of past exploitations and from the feeding of the insatiable North with African resources and humanity. It brings together essays by a concerned generation of scholars driven by the urgent need for radical decolonisation of African development and its legacies of insecurities. It is handy to students and practitioners in economics, policy studies, political science, development studies, global and African studies.

Winner of the Royal Town Planning Institute award for research excellence This critical examination of the development and implementation of planning gain is timely given recent changes to the economic and policy environment. The book looks both at the British context as well as experience in other developed economies and takes stock of how the policy has evolved. It examines the rationale for planning gain, how it has delivered substantial funds for infrastructure and affordable housing and, in the light of this, how it might continue to play a role in the funding of these. It also draws on overseas experience, for example on impact fees and public sector land assembly. It looks at lessons from the past for future policy, both for Britain and for countries overseas. Mechanisms to tap development value are also a global phenomenon in developed market economies – whether through formal taxation or negotiated contributions. As fiscal austerity becomes an increasingly challenging issue, ‘planning gain’ has grown in importance as a potential source of funding for infrastructure and new affordable housing, with many countries keen to examine, learn from, and adapt the experience of others. a critical commentary of planning gain as a policy timely post credit crunch analysis addresses recent planning policy changes

David Berke Succession Planning and Management. A Guide to Organizational Systems and Practices

The purpose of succession-related practices is to ensure that there are ready replacements for key positions in an organization so that turnover will not negatively affect the organization's performance. CCL first published an annotated bibliography on succession planning in 1995. That bibliography focused primarily on the link between succession and management development. This bibliography has a broader scope; it is an update and expansion, commensurate with the maturation of this area of practice. In addition to linkages between succession and development, we also consider representative literature on CEO succession, high potentials, and succession systems and architecture. It is hoped that those who use this bibliography will find resources that help them in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing effective succession systems in their organizations.

A consolidated and comprehensive reference on ligand-binding assays Ligand-binding assays (LBAs) stand as the cornerstone of support for definition of the pharmaco-kinetics and toxicokinetics of macromolecules, an area of burgeoning interest in the pharmaceutical industry. Yet, outside of the Crystal City Conference proceedings, little guidance has been available for LBA validation, particularly for assays used to support macromolecule drug development. Ligand-Binding Assays: Development, Validation, and Implementation in the Drug Development Arena answers that growing need, serving as a reference text discussing critical aspects of the development, validation, and implementation of ligand-binding assays in the drug development field. Ligand-Binding Assays covers essential topics related to ligand-binding assays, from pharmacokinetic studies, the development of LBAs, assay validation, statistical LBA aspects, and regulatory aspects, to software for LBAs and robotics and other emerging methodologies for LBAs. Highlights include: A general discussion of challenges and proven approaches in the development of ligand-binding assays More detailed examination of characteristics of these assays when applied to support of pharmacokinetic and toxicokinetic studies of compounds at different stages in the discovery or development timeline A concise, but detailed, discussion of validation of ligand-binding assays for macromolecules A practical approach to «fit-for-purpose» validation of assays for biomarkers, those molecules receiving increased attention as potentially demonstrating that the target chosen in discovery is being modulated by the candidate therapeutic, both in nonclinical and clinical studies Written by a team of world-recognized authorities in the field, Ligand-Binding Assays provides key information to a broad range of practitioners, both in the pharmaceutical and allied industries and in related contract research organizations and academic laboratories and, perhaps, even in the field of diagnostics and clinical chemistry.

Tourism planning in Bosnia and Herzegovina is an original and innovative book which resulted from 11 months long research. It examines the theoretical dimension of tourism planning approaches emphasizing the importance of two important dimensions, sustainability and community involvement. The author sets out to investigate institutions responsible for tourism development and to test possibility of application of "Third Way" model of tourism planning in the country. The findings show that the concept of tourism planning is well understood but remained a theoretical percept rather than an implementable practice. Furthermore, the present situation can be attributed to the political complexity of the economies in transitions and reluctance of the officials to commit themselves to a planning process which require responsibilities and sacrifices. The book gives chance to readers to draw clear picture of tourism potentials and problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The book is aimed to all those interested in tourism planning worldwide and especially tourism planning authorities in B&H with hope to be of great help in their future tourism planning practices and approaches

An improved understanding of where and when water is used in homes, assists with long term planning within water utilities and with the evaluation of water saving programs. The guide is structured to lead the reader through the development of study design and objectives; data requirements and technology selection - including smart meters; and sample size selection within cost and resource constraints. Included with the guide are a selection of case studies, an extensive list of technology providers and a review of existing water end-use studies. This practical guide will interest water industry planners and policy makers as well as research providers and technology specialists. Financial support for the development of this guide from the Smart Water Fund is gratefully acknowledged.

Anis ur Rahmaan Evolution of Town Planning in Pakistan. With a Specific Reference to Punjab Province

The book describes the world's oldest human settlements during the rather long and diversified sets of civilizations and cultural epochs in the regions, which are now situated within the territorial limits of Pakistan, and highlights three historical periods, namely (i) the age of neolithic settlements, (ii) the Indus Valley civilization, and (iii) the period of precolonial empires and kingdoms and against this backdrop deals with the human settlements of the colonial and postcolonial period in Pakistan. The main motivation for writing this book has been threefold. First, to increase the awareness among the current and prospective students of town planning in particular and the planners at large, in general, about the evolutionary process of town planning in Pakistan. Second, to identify some of the shortcomings, gaps, and overlapping in the process of planning and development of towns in Pakistan. And third, to emphasize the need to undertake further research about the various facets of the subject area. This book is a time series rather than a cross-sectional analysis of the Evolution of Town Planning in Pakistan. It attempts to highlight the various processes and geopolitical landmarks during the nine-thousand-years-long evolutionary processes of physical planning and development in the Indian subcontinent in general and those in Pakistan in particular. It traverses a long temporal and evolutionary progression of town planning processes in Pakistan. This book is a very m...

Abigail Gacusana Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change. A Case Study of Bangladesh

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: Merit, University of Birmingham, course: International Development, language: English, abstract: Climate change is a global concern with its impending threats to economies, human development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Climate change impacts are currently being observed and studies show that poor countries are the most vulnerable. Using Bangladesh as a case study, this research examines the impacts of climate change to poor, rural communities and further explores the measures that are carried out to combat its existing and future threats. This research also aims to look into the existing socio-economic vulnerabilities of Bangladesh in order to establish the linkage between climate change and development. Findings of this study show that poor communities are impacted by climate change through the loss of lives, assets and livelihoods. Adaptation to climate change is therefore necessary and should be integrated in development planning and objectives, to ensure that the most vulnerable groups are represented. Overall this research has observed that Bangladesh is still lacking this capacity, despite the spontaneous adaptation being practised by local communities. This study has further observed that the most common response in addressing climate change impacts to vulnerable communities in Bangladesh is community-based adaptation, whi...

Is the millennium development goals' path cleared for completion?Sustainability is the answer rather than end the MDGs. For this reason, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a new development agenda, has been conceived to continue in the next fifteen years what the MDGs have started and may have to be applied to all countries for societal peace, more job opportunities and a global agreement for climate change. The success of the MDGs and SDGs should be an obligation and a responsibility for everyone on this planet. There are numerous ways to get involved in every individual's way such as in education, research and social responsibility. Steven W. Schmidt Case Studies and Activities in Adult Education and Human Resource Development (PB)

A volume in Adult Education Special Topics: Theory, Research, and Practice in Lifelong LearningSeries Editor: Kathleen P. King, Fordham UniversityCase studies have become a widely-used instructional tool in many educationalenvironments. The use of case studies began in the 1950s at Harvard BusinessSchool. Today, they may be used as part of a course of study, or as the mainfocus of a course, to which other material is added. While the use of case studiesis prevalent in schools of business and medicine, they are not often used in adulteducation or human resource development. This may be because there are nocurrent major publications that deal with the use of case studies in these disciplines; nor are there any majordatabases of adult education or human resource development case studies for instructors to use. Good casestudies can bring reality into the classroom. They can provide frameworks for discussion based on issues thatmust be faced in real life. Complex case issues can be broken down and examined for greater understanding, then pulled together again for resolution.Case studies can be used successfully in adult education. I propose a bookbased on the use of case-based learning in adult education and humanresource development (HRD). The book could be positioned as asupplement to course textbooks for courses in adult education and HRD. Iwould write the cases and develop the exercises, but could also get othersto contribute a case study or exercise to the book. Cases would eac...

This research attempts to explore, therefore, the linkages among gender, energy and development.Women/gender and women's empowerment serve as core impetus in the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), however, gender fails to be viewed as a critical pathway in improving the performance and service delivery of energy sectors. It is in the same manner that energy is not widely viewed to be significant in addressing development issues such as women's education and employment, maternal health, child mortality rate, poverty, hunger, and even income. One reason could be the failure to perceive gender and energy as fuelling each other in a single development research and/or practice.

Violence, Peace & Everyday Modes of Justice and Healing in Post-Colonial Africa

Violence in its various proportions, genres and manifestations has had an enduring historical legacy the world over. However, works speaking to approaches aimed at mitigating violence characteristic of Africa are very limited. As some scholars have noted, Africans have experienced cycles of violence since the pre-colonial epoch, such that overt violence has become banalised on the African continent. This has had the effect of generating complex results, legacies and perennial emotional wounds that call for healing, reconciliation, justice and positive peace. Yet, in the absence of systematic and critical approaches to the study of violence on the continent, discourses on violence would hardly challenge the global matrices of violence that threaten peace and development in Africa. This volume is a contribution in the direction of such urgently needed systematic and critical approaches. It interrogates, from different angles and with inspiration from a multidisciplinary perspective, the contentious production and resilience of violence in Africa. It calls for a paradigm shift – an alternative approach that forges and merges African customary dispute resolution and Western systems of dispute resolution – towards a framework of positive peace, holistic restoration, sustainable development and equity. The book is a welcome contribution to students and practitioners in security studies, African studies, development studies, global studies, policy studies, and political science.

HOPSCA is a form of mixed use planning born out of the China development boom of the 1990s. HOPSCA is an acronym for Hotels, Offices, Parks, Shopping, Convention centres and Apartments. The concept of HOPSCA is gaining recognition as a legitimate planning tool outside of China. It has been in use since the 1990s and favoured by architects and urban designers worldwide.HOPSCA differs from Master Planning, TOD, traditional CBD (Central Business District) models, New Urbanism and Smart Growth in distinct ways. HOPSCA was driven by an identified market niche to co-locate specific uses: These uses are desirous to co-locate because of their compatibility. The thesis proposes to consider how HOPSCA could be realized in South East Queensland under current legislation. Further the paper will discuss the desirability of creating a 'city within a city' and its relevance and application in the Australian context. Does planning in contested cities inadvertedly make the divisions worse? The 60s and 70s saw a strong role of planning, social engineering, etc but there has since been a move towards a more decentralised ‘community planning’ approach. The book examines urban planning and policy in the context of deeply contested space, where place identity and cultural affinities are reshaping cities. Throughout the world, contentions around identity and territory abound, and in Britain, this problem has found recent expression in debates about multiculturalism and social cohesion. These issues are most visible in the urban arena, where socially polarised communities co-habit cities also marked by divided ethnic loyalties. The relationship between the two is complicated by the typical pattern that social disadvantage is disproportionately concentrated among ethnic groups, who also experience a social and cultural estrangement, based on religious or racial identity. Navigating between social exclusion and community cohesion is essential for the urban challenges of efficient resource use, environmental enhancement, and the development of a flourishing economy. The book addresses planning in divided cities in a UK and international context, examining cities such as Chicago, hyper-segregated around race, and Jerusalem, acting as a crucible for a wider conflict. The first section deals with concepts and theories, examining the research literature and situating the issue within the urban challenges of competitiveness and inclusion. Section 2 covers collaborative planning and identifies models of planning, policy and urban governance that can operate in contested space. Section 3 presents case studies from Belfast, Chicago and Jerusalem, examining both the historical/contemporary features of these cities and their potential trajectories. The final section offers conclusions and ways forward, drawing the lessons for creating shared space in a pluralist cities and addressing cohesion and multiculturalism. • Addresses important contemporary issue of social cohesion vs. urban competitiveness • focus on impact of government policies will appeal to practitioners in urban management, local government and regeneration • Examines role of planning in cities worldwide divided by religion, race, socio-economic, etc • Explores debate about contested space in urban policy and planning • Identifies models for understanding contested spaces in cities as a way of improving effectiveness of government policy
