They can provide a sustainable supply of wood resources to meet the increasing demands of wood processing industries, rather than escalating pressure on natural forests reserved for conservation. Income from plantation forests can address the economic marginalisation of forest dependent people. Over the last three decades, three strategies have been put into practice to stimulate the development of both large-scale and small-scale plantation forestry in Indonesia: farm forestry, community forestry and community-company partnership. The success, however, has been limited. This paper reviews experience of these strategies in Indonesia, and considers this in the context of criteria and indicators for sustainable plantation development suggested in the literature. It then develops an analytical framework to assess whether a new policy proposed in Indonesia, "the People Plantation Forest" (PPF) policy, is likely to stimulate community-based tree growing activities.Our analysis suggests that out of six elements identified in the framework, local institutional and capacity building, along with production technology and market acces...

Gum arabic is a tree resin obtained from Acacia senegal, an endemic tree species to the African Sahel Zone. Recently, plantation cultivation of Acacia senegal has been introduced in Northern Nigeria and the 'modern' production of gum arabic is investigated by government institutions to promote future gum arabic production, alongside a thitherto predominant smallholder collection of gum arabic from so-called natural stands of Acacia senegal. The two ways of collecting or producing gum arabic - smallholder collection in natural stands and plantation cultivation of Acacia senegal - are compared referring to land and labour productivity. In contrast to the collection of gum arabic in natural stands, the production of gum arabic in plantation cultivation requires the implementation of several working steps that are not carried out in natural stands. Hence, the question is raised how these two ways of gum arabic production differ from each other and why the collection from natural stands is rather extensive in comparison to plantation cultivation. Therefore, the context of local livelihoods and the interaction of several actors in the drylands of North-Eastern Nigeria is taken into consideration to explain the collection of gum arabic in natural stands. These interactions are limited in plantation cultivation where gum arabic production efficiency and profitability is focussed.

Ground water is tapped by sinking wells where drought animals, diesel or electric power is utilized to take out water. Plant diversity was studied in the plantations of different species at Wondo Genet. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of overstorey species, age, and density of the different plantations on the understorey plant diversity. The plantations species were of Cupressus lusitanica, Eucalyptus grandis, Grevillea robusta and Juniperus excelsa. The age of the stands of the different species ranged between 6 and 23 years. A total of 72 plots, having 20 m x 20 m area were studied under the plantations. A total of 45 understorey plant species were recorded.There was a significant difference among the plantation stands with regards to understory plant density, diversity and number of species. The diversity and number of understory plant species were positively related with age of the plantation stands while understorey plant density was inversely related with overstory plant density and crown cover.The overstorey plantation appeared to affect the abundance of understorey plant species more than the species richness. Canopy cover was significantly associated with understorey plant density under all the plantation stands than other stand characteristics.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the global mean surface temperature has increased 0.6 ± 0.2 oC since 1861, and predicts an increase of 2 to 4 oC over the next 100 years. Temperature increases also affect the hydrologic cycle by directly increasing evaporation of available surface water and vegetation transpiration. Consequently, these changes can influence precipitation amounts, timings and intensity rates, and indirectly impact the flux and storage of water in surface and subsurface reservoirs (i.e., lakes, soil moisture, groundwater). In addition, there may be other associated impacts, such as sea water intrusion, water quality deterioration, potable water shortage, etc. While climate change affects surface water resources directly through changes in the major long-term climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration, the relationship between the changing climate variables and groundwater is more complicated and poorly understood. The greater variability in rainfall could mean more frequent and prolonged periods of high or low groundwater levels, and saline intrusion in coastal aquifers due to sea level rise and resource reduction. Often differences in land uses (forest, rubber plantation, paddy field, bare land) are known to have specific effects on soil properties. In the context of the project Living Landscapes China (LILAC) these effects were evaluated and the characteristics of soil types under changing conditions in two transects (altitude and parent material in transect 1, land uses in transect 2) in the Naban River Watershed National Nature Reserve were classified. We used field investigations to classify the soil types, as well as laboratory analyses to quantify specific characteristics in samples, taken from the profiles. Soil physical (bulk density, water content, texture) and chemical parameters (total contents of carbon, nitrogen and macro nutrients, ECEC) were investigated. While differences in altitude did not seem to have profound influences on the soils, effects of land uses were pronounced especially in the first 10 to 20 cm of soil profiles. Soils under forests contain between 1.3 % - 2 % SOC and 0.15 % - 0.17 % TN in the Ah horizon. Study was conducted at Coastal Agricultural Research Station of PARC, Saleh Muhammad Goth, Landhi, Karachi. In order to see the effects of marginal quality ground water in comparison to good quality water (tap water) on crop yield and water use efficiency. Okra was grown under drip system of irrigation during the year, 2011. The soil characteristics, soil samples at depth of 0-15, 15-30 and 30-60 cm were drawn and analyzed in laboratory for various parameters. The soil under study was sandy loam in texture, having the DBD 1.59 gm/cm3 , infiltration rate 1.56 cm/hr, F.C, W.P and A.M was 14.8%,6.2%and 8.6% respectively. Before crop sowing, drip irrigation system is installed, also assessed for its performance through Uniformity Co-efficient which ranged from 93 to 96% and indicating that the system was working satisfactorily. The quantity of tap and ground water applied through drip system to okra crop was of equal volume i.e., 6989.7m3/ha. However, higher crop yield and higher water use efficiency i.e., 18.93 t/ha and 2.7kg/m3 were recorded under T1 over T2 (yield 17.0t/ha and water use efficiency 2.4kg/m3) respectively.

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth and yield response of cauliflower (Brassica olreracea L.) under surface and subsurface drip irrigation with fertigation through field experiment. The treatment consisted of two irrigation methods viz., surface and subsurface drip irrigation. The surface drip laterals were placed on the surface whereas in subsurface drip the laterals were placed at 15 cm depth below surface. The biometric attributes viz., plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, leaf area index and yield attributes viz., total curd yield and circumference of curd were monitored periodically. The soil moisture during irrigation cycle and root length density at harvest also was measured by taking the soil samples.

Water is essential component for sustainable development and poverty alleviation. But due to the high rate of population growth and uncontrolled urban expansion in the towns/cities of developing countries the water supply system is under heavy pressure to meet the growing demand of the communities. The study is an appraisal of the impacts of urban expansion on water supply system in Adigrat town of Tigray national state, Ethiopia. Descriptive research method was employed for the study. Population is growing at fast rate in the town, this is due to increase result from natural growth, rural-urban migration, and high influx of population due from Eritrea and reclassification of rural land to urban use and emergence of new periphery settlements are observed. This phenomena is problematic form the town water supply services. To prevent the emergence of new settlements, establish an integrated legal basis and strengthen cooperative environment with all concerned stakeholders and recharging water by the natural aquifer, construction of additional public water points in the newly developed areas and controlling water loss.

The presence of water on Earth is discussed in this book using various theories about its origin as a basis. Present study was aimed at isolation and biochemical characterization of Rhizobium and Azospirillum strains from roots and rhizospheric soil of wheat and maize (at tillering and anthesis stage) growing under different moisture regimes in the field and under induced water stress in pots. The survival efficiency as measured by log cfu/g, carbon/nitrogen utilization pattern determined by QTS, random amplification of polymorphic DNA analyses, phytohormone production and 16sRNA sequence analysis were done for isolated strains. The efficiency of isolated strains to promote plant growth and development was tested under induced water stress conditions in reinoculation studies. Rhizobium and Azospirillum isolated from arid field and induced water stress in pots showed the potential to serve as inocula to promote growth and yield of plants grown in moisture deficit soil.

Even though REDD is still under discussion within the UNFCCC framework, many REDD pilot projects are being implemented across the tropics. Securing local communities' tenure rights and their equitable access to forest conservation benefits are critical in REDD because local communities could be excluded from REDD benefits if their land and forest access rights are not adequately addressed. In Cambodia, two REDD pilot projects: Community Forestry Carbon Offset Project (CFCOP) in Oddar Meanchey province and the Seima Protection Forest Project (SPF) in Mundulkiri province, are being implemented. This study aims to contribute to the development of an effective REDD mechanism in Cambodia by examining land and forest tenures and benefit sharing arrangements under the two REDD pilot projects in Cambodia. Fresh water sources such as rivers, lakes, streams and brooks constitute less than one percent of all available water on earth. However, pollution activities have been impacting negatively on these sources of water supply thereby compromising quality and creating environmental problems. Studies have shown that these water bodies auto-purify themselves from pollutants discharged into them under certain conditions. This work investigated the auto-recovery processes of River Illo in Ota, Nigeria from abattoir wastes which is one of the most common pollution activities in developing countries. The analysis was done using the modified Streeter-Phelps equations. This work should help shed light on how the natural purification processes of rivers can be further enhanced.
