The wind energy industry in Germany has an excellent global standing when it comes to the development and construction of wind turbines. Germany currently represents the world's largest market for wind energy. The book covers the application of numerical methods to reinforced concrete structures. To analyze reinforced concrete structures linear elastic theories are inadequate because of cracking, bond and the nonlinear and time dependent behavior of both concrete and reinforcement. These effects have to be considered for a realistic assessment of the behavior of reinforced concrete structures with respect to ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states. The book gives a compact review of finite element and other numerical methods. The key to these methods is through a proper description of material behavior. Thus, the book summarizes the essential material properties of concrete and reinforcement and their interaction through bond. These basics are applied to different structural types such as bars, beams, strut and tie models, plates, slabs and shells. This includes prestressing of structures, cracking, nonlinear stressstrain relations, creeping, shrinkage and temperature changes. Appropriate methods are developed for each structural type. Large displacement and dynamic problems are treated as well as short-term quasi-static problems and long-term transient problems like creep and shrinkage. Most problems are illustrated by examples which are solved by the program package ConFem, based on the freely available Python programming language. The ConFem source code together with the problem data is available under open source rules at concrete-fem.com. The author aims to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of numerical methods for simulation of reinforced concrete structures, addressing students, teachers, researchers and designing and checking engineers.

Retrofitting method using fiber with high tensile strength namely Aramid and Carbon has successfullyproven increasing both shear strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members. The drawback of these fibers is its low fracturing strain property which causes brittle failure at the time the fiber breaks. This book focuses on fiber with high fracturing strain and low tensile strength such as PET as retrofitting material for reinforced concrete specimens representing bridge piers tested under reversed cyclic loading. PET fiber breakage did not occur and higher shear capacity and ductility were obtained compared to that of specimens retrofitted with Aramid and Carbon. The high fracturing strain property allows bigger tolerance of fiber breakage resulting in slower decrease of shear strength capacity. Models to predict shear strength capacity and deformation with the key variable of increasingfiber strain as a representation of structural member deterioration are proposed and show good prediction of experimental result. The results should provide valuable information for civil engineer, construction company and industry specializing in structural retrofitting."

Continual industrialization has resulted in increased use of natural resources, which has also brought along serious ecological and environmental imbalance due to the dumping of industrial wastes. Principles of sustainable construction have to be accepted with regard to the consumption of natural resources and the production of harmful emissions. The replacing of cement in concrete mixtures with more sustainable materials is necessary. Over a period of last ten years, the image of fly ash has completely been changed from a "waste" to "resource material". Fly ash if segregated, collected and used properly can solve the major problems of cement use with a number of benefits: extends the life cycle of concrete, reduces energy use and also the amount of coal combustion products disposed in landfills. Book demonstrates the suitability of using Slovak fly ash as cement replacement in the construction industry, especially in concrete road pavements. The main objective of this study is to present the effect of prestressing force and induced prestressing moment on the ultimate moment capacity for the structurally determinate and indeterminate prestressed beams. An analytical study was carried out for 33 structurally determinate internally bonded prestressed beams and 21 structurally determinate unbonded prestressed beams with different concrete compressive strength and different reinforcement ratios to determine the ultimate moment capacity. A numerical study included non linear finite element modeling using "Tno-Diana" software was used to solve 5 statically determinate prestressed beams, which were previously tested experimentally. These models were used as a calibration models for the program also 60 statically indeterminate prestressed beams were solved using "Tno-Diana" program and ultimate moment capacity, ultimate deflection, ultimate concrete strain, ultimate prestressing steel strain and load deflection curves were determined.

Design and construction in existing contexts is becoming increasingly important, and often the structures – sometimes of historical interest – can be preserved easily and at minimum cost by employing strengthening measures. Existing concrete members can be strengthened by using adhesives to bond additional reinforcing elements onto or into those members. This book explains the design rules, together with their background, and uses examples to illustrate their use, specifically for slabs, beams and columns. Concrete member strengthening measures can take the form of, for example, flexural strengthening with externally bonded (surface-mounted) CFRP strips, CF sheets and steel plates, flexural strengthening with CFRP strips bonded in slits (near-surface-mounted reinforcement), shear strengthening with externally bonded CF sheets and steel plates, and column strengthening with CF sheets as confining reinforcement. The explanations and background information provided are mainly based on the new German guideline «Strengthening of Concrete Members with Adhesively Bonded Reinforcement» by the German Committee for Structural Concrete (DAfStb). This is the first European guideline to regulate this topic in the form of a supplement to the Eurocode. As it is planned to produce a document in a future Eurocode 2, the DAfStb guideline serves as a starting point. The authors are extensively involved in the planning, design, operation and inspection of buildings for preservation and reconstruction, and in the updating of European Technical Approval Guidelines (ETAGs) and design rules. This book is focused on the theoretical and practical design of reinforced concrete beams, columns and frame structures. It is based on an analytical approach of designing normal reinforced concrete structural elements that are compatible with most international design rules, including for instance the European design rules – Eurocode 2 – for reinforced concrete structures.
