How can we approach professional development in a thoughtful way, keep teachers motivated, and make the process worthwhile? It's a truth that school leaders can't deny: teachers tend to think of PD as a distraction from the "real work" of the classroom-as something to get through instead of an opportunity to engage, learn, and grow as professionals. Too often, they're absolutely right. When PD is packaged as a one-size-fits-all, one-and-done experience, even content that teachers might greet with enthusiasm won't stay with them for long. It just doesn't stick. In Professional Development That Sticks, Fred Ende makes the case for a better approach-one that melds traditional PD structures with personalized learning. Here, school leaders will find a framework for developing professional learning experiences that spark and maintain teacher motivation and lead to real changes in practice. Ende's three-stage professional development for learning (PDL) process covers critical aspects of planning, providing, and following up. In addition, PDL's Think, Act, and Reflect method ensures your teachers will acquire meaningful, deep, "sticky" learning that lasts.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, grade: 3.5, Aga Khan University, language: English, abstract: This study explored the factors that were required for creating an environment based on a professional learning community (PLC) that not only provides support to teachers on a regular basis for their development, but also builds a collaborative learning environment for the teachers in the school particularly in the early childhood development (ECD) context. Further, this study also identified the processes that helped to build PLC using the appreciative inquiry approach. In addition, the support of appreciative inquiry as an approach for building PLC was also measured. Eight research participants were selected who were involved in four stages of appreciative inquiry, namely discovery, dream, design and destiny. The data revealed that trust, collaborative learning and reflective dialogue were some of the factors that are required for creating a PLC environment. However, three processes for initiating PLC culture were included which are classroom teaching and observation, constructive feedbacks and reflective dialogue sessions. At the end, this research found that the appreciative inquiry approach was significant as a value-added tool that helped to build the collaborative environment in the school and provided participants an opportunity to share their skills and expertise as well as their dreams and imaginations wi...

Laboratory resources play a vital role in the teaching-learning process of science subjects. In Tanzanian public secondary schools, there is inequality in the provision of these resources such that the community secondary schools have very few laboratory resources, however, these schools are required to sit for the same national examination as more privileged schools, with better resources. This study focused on exploring teachers’ experiences of teaching science subjects with limited laboratory resources in community secondary schools in Lindi region in Tanzania. The shortage of Laboratory resources limits teachers to teach according to their belief, that for effective teaching and learning science, students should be involved in hands-on activities. The shortage of these resources forces teachers to conduct science experiments in order of priority; they organized experiments for those classes that were preparing for national examinations. It was recommended that in teaching and learning science with limited resources, teachers should be innovative and committed so as to realize meaningful learning. Furthermore, teachers’ professional learning is essential for them to gain skills

Teachers of religious education experience the challenge of secularization and diversity in the classroom. Schools rooted in the Christian tradition wonder how they can adapt religious education to an increasing plurality in worldviews. How can worldview education contribute to the identity development of children and at the same express the identity of the school? Learning for Life introduces a hermeneutical-communicative model that helps teachers to reflect on their goals, didactical roles, religious sources and students' abilities. Teachers invite students to search for meaning in all kinds of religious and non-religious sources, to exchange views with each other in a respectful way and to respond individually using imagination as a powerful learning tool. Learning for Life explains the model, provides pedagogical backgrounds and shows results from research at nine primary schools in the Netherlands. The professional development programme (PDP) drew for its design on programmes recommended for their success in other contexts, but was unique for its innovatory combination of specific forms of content (‘task-based learning’) and process (a ‘coaching approach’), and for its adaptation to the needs of EFL primary school teachers in Thailand. Task-based learning (TBL) was recommended in the literature for its success in helping teachers to focus on student learning, and providing explicit practices to implement the principles of communicative language teaching (CLT) as required by the new curriculum. A coaching approach was claimed to assist teachers by clearly explaining theoretical concepts and their practical implementation at the classroom level, simplifying the steps for implementation in the classroom context and supporting teachers through the process of change.

This book focuses on the process of change. In particular, how schools and the individual teachers who make them up experience and manage the change process brought about by their involvement in professional development programmes. The context for the study was the Intermediate Numeracy Project (INP); a project initiated by the Ministry of Education that was designed to enhance the teaching of numeracy and improve student achievement in mathematics in New Zealand schools. Models of change for a whole school and individual teachers were outlined in the literature review. Key catalysts and barriers to the change process were also identified. Barbara Rogoff’s (1995) method of three plane analysis relating to processes at the personal, interpersonal and community level was used as a framework for the research results. Although this study focused on the teachers in one school, the findings should provide useful insights for schools, teachers, school leaders, and professional development facilitators who grapple with reforms in teaching and learning and curriculum change, not only within numeracy and mathematics but within the broader school curriculum.

Three related themes are explored. In the first concepts of ‘deep’ and ‘surface’ learning (Marton and Säljö (1976)) and ‘profound’ learning (West-Burnham and Coates (2005)) are investigated to look at the nature of the learning experienced by the research participants. The second theme looks at how a sensation becomes learning and offers a four-stage model outlining the movement from experience to deep or profound learning. In the final theme the nature of continuing professional development (CPD) is explored and a tension identified between a declared aspiration for autonomous, self-directed professionals and the current emphasis on measurement and audit.

Teacher evaluation--a term that brings fear, anticipation, stress, anxiety, or even boredom to the hearts of teachers and administrators everywhere. How can we reinvent teacher evaluation so that it really makes a difference--so that everyone in school benefits from it, so that teachers and administrators learn from it, so that students succeed as a result of it? The bad news is that many schools and districts seem to be stuck in old ruts, involving The Observation, The Behavior Checklist, and The Conference. The good news is that many districts have paved the way for teacher evaluation to actually become professional development, by using a three-track evaluation system:* Track I, for beginning teachers, promotes growth and new learning through mentoring, frequent observations, and support systems.* Track II, for tenured teachers--that is, most teachers in the system--promotes professional learning experiences through self-assessment, goal setting, data collection, formative evaluations, study groups, action plans, and evaluation in which teachers play an active role.* Track III, for tenured teachers needing assistance, focuses on remediating difficulties and recommending further action.More good news: Through concrete examples, useful forms, and assessment tools, this book provides a clear roadmap to effective teacher evaluation systems that combine quality assurance with professional development for all teachers.

In past decade, the use of ICT in schools increased exponentially. However, ICT integration in teaching is still utilized at a low level. While many ICT professional development programs for teachers focus mainly on developing teachers' technical competency, the effect of their attitude, perception and emotion towards ICT integration is usually neglected. In this book, a social approach to professional development of ICT integration is argued to be important to improve ICT integration. A research was conducted to look at issues of ICT integration from the teachers' perspective and to explore the impact of peer support in enhancing ICT professional development. Based on the research findings, this book draws the focus on developing teachers' intrinsic motivation towards ICT integration. Peer support is found to be an enabler of intrinsic motivation. A sustainable peer support enhanced professional development model is thus developed. This book should help shed some light on developing ICT professional development programs for teachers and should be especially useful to teachers, professional developers and school leaders who want to lift ICT integration to a higher level.

This book interrogates the role elementary mathematics teachers can play in insuring effective induction as well as supervision of neophyte teachers. Cultural competence in education is a vital part of running an effective classroom with cross-cultural relationships. However, there has been limited research addressing the supports classroom teachers receive from their instructional leaders in being culturally responsive to the students in their classroom. The purpose of this study was to examine the reports of novice urban elementary teachers on the supports they receive from their instructional leaders in being culturally responsive to the students in their classroom. Cross, Bazron, Isaacs, and Dennis’s (1989) framework for culturally competent systems served as the conceptual framework for this study. The first finding revealed that teachers measure support for valuing diversity in regards to resources. The second finding revealed that teachers measured supports for adapting to diversity in regards to school leaders’ ability to incorporate the community into the school structure. The third finding revealed that teachers measured supports for managing the dynamics of difference in regards to school leaders participation in conflict facilitation.

The concepts that knit these articles together despite the variety of educational settings and populations are: relationships, community, and the body experience—often missing in higher education. This volume includes: the voices of marginalized populations often excluded from research studies such as community college students, emerging adults with learning differences, English language learners, native Alaskans, African-American health educators, doctoral students, and yoga practitioners; new paradigms for thinking about adult undergraduate education; new ways to deal with social conflict and advise doctoral students; and personal stories from Black women leaders, college teachers, student writers as well as pregnant women, and social service providers. This is the 147th volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education series. It offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

This constructivist grounded theory study interrogates the role of the second level teacher in contemporary Ireland. This role emerges as a problematic navigation between: a passive pedagogy, an ambivalent professionalism and a frequently silenced vocational domain. The study highlights an intensified pedagogy dominated by: terminal exams, competitive accountability, limited autonomy, and a fractured relational domain in typically non - reflective learning spaces. The study also celebrates however, a deeply rooted yearning by teachers, to re-discover their vocational mission. The author argues for a more radically integrated vocational practice. He challenges teacher educators, policy makers, teachers and educational leaders to 'attend to' the human development mission at the heart of teaching and learning. In so doing, he proposes a visionary framework to guide the realignment of educational practice in Ireland.

The educational reform movement in Taiwan encourages learning English for communicative purposes and values individual interests. However, many current in-service English teachers and parents learned English via grammar translation method and testing, which focuses on the correction of language forms. As a result, these English teachers and parents may or may not share similar views about the changing trends in English learning. A survey and an interview protocol were served as data collection instruments. Teacher beliefs toward English learning in Taiwan were fully revealed in this book. The book provides the mutual understandings between eastern and western perspectives in terms of language education.
