Saggers Robert E. Manager Teaching to Enhance Leadership Learning and Effectiveness

"Development of others" appears consistently in leadership competency frameworks; managers are now being asked to think of themselves as teachers in addition to their myriad other roles. Little empirical evidence however seems to exist that managers who teach their employees learn to lead better, generate more employee satisfaction and are indeed more effective than those who do not. Twenty managers and forty-three of their employees participated in this study. Data were collected from both groups before and after the managers attended a workshop designed using activity systems theory. Results indicate that employee perceptions are positively influenced by manager teaching, managers can learn to be situational leaders and that post-workshop teaching by managers to employees facilitates manager learning and leadership effectiveness. This supports the view that managing, leading, teaching and learning are interdependent elements within the same activity system. Suggestions for future research are provided.

Anthony Adade Teaching ITIL to Technology Managers

To better understand the motivations underlying this work, it is important to describe key aspects of my personal story in information technology services delivery and support, with an emphasis on my professional experience as it relates to this study. Some years ago, as a new manager for technology resources, I considered myself an agent for change, starting out with the assuredness that I would not make the same mistakes as the previous manager. I had risen up from the bottom, and as such, was confident that I had what it takes to 'make things happen' in my department. People were not happy working in the department but no one dared say anything because the manager was very vindictive once crossed. People did not seem to know as much about their job functions as I thought they did. ... I began my first month with many meetings on setting the agenda for daily operations, and very optimistic about the future of the team. However, by the end of that first month as IT manager, those lofty goals were transformed into routine tasks such as dealing with tardiness, lack of productivity, low morale and grievance resolutions between antagonistic groups and individuals.

With the paradigm shift to student-centered learning, the physical teaching space is being examined The configuration of classrooms, the technology within them, and the behaviors they encourage are frequently represented as a barrier to enacting student-centered teaching methods, because traditionally designed rooms typically lack flexibility in seating arrangement, are configured to privilege a speaker at the front of the room, and lack technology to facilitate student collaboration. But many colleges and universities are redesigning the spaces in which students learn, collapsing traditional lecture halls and labs to create new, hybrid spaces—large technology-enriched studios—with the flexibility to support active and collaborative learning in larger class sizes. With this change, our classrooms are coming to embody the 21st-century pedagogy which many educators accept, and research and teaching practice are beginning to help us to understand the educational implications of thoughtfully engineered classrooms—in particular, that space and how we use it affects what, how, and how much students learn. This is the 137th volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education series. It offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

Schlagworte : ISO 9001, ITIL, Qualitätsmanagementsystem, QM-Normen, IT

Managers at all levels are constantly challenged to do more with fewer employees, to motivate diverse groups of people, and to face up to tough people problems in their workforces. An important key to managers' success is accomplishing these goals while protecting themselves and their companies from legal liability. Yet some in management tend to blame legal requirements for hindering progress toward solving problems. U.S. law, however, provides managers with broad discretion in many employment situations and in most cases helps ensure that managers perform their essential functions in a way that is fundamentally fair while still supporting company goals. A Manager's Guide to Employment Law will help managers make day-to-day decisions on how best to manage their employees and handle issues of legal liability. Expert author Dana Muir identifies the subtle and unnecessary mistakes managers make that cause legal headaches and shows how becoming familiar with basic principles of employment law will enable them to develop an internal compass to help make the right decisions. Each chapter focuses on legal concepts of broad application in today's workplace, providing real examples of problems managers face and offering strategies for addressing those problems.

Wildland Fire in the Appalachians: Discussions Among Managers and Scientists was designed for anyone with an interest in wildland fire in the Appalachian region and provided an unusual approach to sharing information. The objective of the conference was for fire managers and researchers to learn from each other so they could better understand and work together on problems specific to the highly diverse Appalachian Mountains. The conference design was unique: it was neither a research symposium nor a managers' meeting, but rather a synergy of both. Over 40 speakers were invited to discuss research updates, management experiences, and successful technology transfer. Research topics included plant and wildlife ecology, fire history, invasive plants, season of burning, and other topics. Managers shared experiences on how to apply fire to the landscape, how to work with media and the general public, and updates to fire management tools such as smoke prediction models, LANDFIRE, and IFT-DSS.

A volume in Research Methods in Educational TechnologySeries Editor Walter F. Heinecke, University of VirginiaDespite technology's presence in virtually every public school, its documented familiarity and use byyouth outside of school, and the wealth of resources it provides for teaching social studies, there has beenrelatively little empirical research on its effectiveness for the teaching and learning of social studies. Accordingly, the volumeis divided into three overarching sections: research constructs and contexts, research reports, and researchreviews. The need for research is particularly acute within the field of social studies and technology. As the primarypurpose of social studies is to prepare the young people of today to be the citizens of tomorrow, it isnecessary to examine how technology tools impact, improve, and otherwise affect teaching and learning insocial studies. Given these circumstances, we have prepared this collection of research conceptualizations, reports, and reviews to achieve three goals.1. Martin Perry Environmental Policy for Business. A Manager's Guide to Smart Regulation

In the context of the worldwide concern with the sustainability of current forms of development, business managers are being required to engage with environmental policy more creatively than in the past. At the broadest level, business managers are being advised to embrace regulation as a source of competitive advantage rather than viewing it simply as a compliance cost and administrative burden. Irrespective of whether managers accept that "going beyond compliance" is a stimulus for innovation, business managers frequently face a policy environment in which choices need to be made over how policy agendas should be responded to. Contemporary policy approaches may mandate demonstration of best practice, without de ning what constitutes best practice or use policy approaches that give the option of "paying for pollution" or investing in clean technology. Frequently, the argument is made that there are reputational gains to being a first mover and putting the organization ahead of regulation, but the implication can be considerable upfront investment for uncertain returns. Against this context, this book provides a guide to the new world of environmental regulation for managers within business and students with a particular interest in understanding how environmental regulation works.

Bruce Tulgan The 27 Challenges Managers Face. Step-by-Step Solutions to (Nearly) All of Your Management Problems

For more than twenty years, management expert Bruce Tulgan has been asking, “What are the most difficult challenges you face when it comes to managing people?” Regardless of industry or job title, managers cite the same core issues—27 recurring challenges: the superstar whom the manager is afraid of losing, the slacker whom the manager cannot figure out how to motivate, the one with an attitude problem, and the two who cannot get along, to name just a few. It turns out that when things are going wrong in a management relationship, the common denominator is almost always unstructured, low substance, hit-or-miss communication. The real problem is that most managers are “managing on autopilot” without even realizing it—until something goes wrong. And if you are managing on autopilot, then something almost always does. The 27 Challenges Managers Face shows exactly how to break the vicious cycle and gain control of management relationships. No matter what the issue, Tulgan shows that the fundamentals are all you need. The very best managers hold ongoing one-on-one conversations that make expectations clear, track performance, offer feedback, and hold people accountable. For every workplace problem—even the most awkward and difficult—The 27 Challenges Managers Face shows how to tailor conversations to solve situations familiar to every manager. Tulgan offers clear approaches for turning around bad attitudes, reducing friction and conflict, improving low performers, retaining top performers, and even addressing your own personal burnout. The 27 Challenges Managers Face is an indispensable resource for managers at all levels, one anyone managing anyone will want to keep on hand. One challenge at a time, you’ll see how the most effective managers use the fundamentals of management to proactively resolve (nearly) any problem a manager could face.

A game-changing approach to management Too often discussions of management practice focus exclusively on managing people and organizational issues. Rarely, however, do they incorporate a discussion about technology or address all three dimensions in a balanced way. When they do, the result is game changing. In our hypercompetitive environment, those managers who are outstanding at being plugged into their people, technology, and organizational processes simultaneously excel at coming up with effective business solutions. The Plugged-In Manager makes the case that being plugged-in—the ability to see choices across each of an organization's dimensions of people, technology, and organizational processes and then to mix them together into new and powerful organizational strategies, structures, and practices—may be the most important capability a manager can develop to succeed in the 21st century. Step by step Griffith shows you how to acquire this ability. Shows what it takes for business managers to succeed as technology and organizations become more and more complex Profiles exceptional leaders and organizations who are plugged-in, such as Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com Offers a fresh look at management issues Filled with compelling case studies and drawing on first-hand interviews, The Plugged-In Manager highlights this often neglected managerial capability and the costs of only focusing on one dimension rather than all three.

Here, he illustrates how technology is most powerfully used outside the classroom, and, when used effectively, how it can ensure that students arrive to class more prepared for meaningful interaction with faculty. Bowen offers practical advice for faculty and administrators on how to engage students with new technology while restructuring classes into more active learning environments.

Create a more effective system for evaluating online faculty Evaluating Online Teaching is the first comprehensive book to outline strategies for effectively measuring the quality of online teaching, providing the tools and guidance that faculty members and administrators need. The authors address challenges that colleges and universities face in creating effective online teacher evaluations, including organizational structure, institutional governance, faculty and administrator attitudes, and possible budget constraints. Through the integration of case studies and theory, the text provides practical solutions geared to address challenges and foster effective, efficient evaluations of online teaching. Readers gain access to rubrics, forms, and worksheets that they can customize to fit the needs of their unique institutions. Evaluation methods designed for face-to-face classrooms, from student surveys to administrative observations, are often applied to the online teaching environment, leaving reviewers and instructors with an ill-fitted and incomplete analysis. Evaluating Online Teaching shows how strategies for evaluating online teaching differ from those used in traditional classrooms and vary as a function of the nature, purpose, and focus of the evaluation. This book guides faculty members and administrators in crafting an evaluation process specifically suited to online teaching and learning, for more accurate feedback and better results. Readers will: Learn how to evaluate online teaching performance Examine best practices for student ratings of online teaching Discover methods and tools for gathering informal feedback Understand the online teaching evaluation life cycle The book concludes with an examination of strategies for fostering change across campus, as well as structures for creating a climate of assessment that includes online teaching as a component. Evaluating Online Teaching helps institutions rethink the evaluation process for online teaching, with the end goal of improving teaching and learning, student success, and institutional results.
