This project is aimed to deposit magnetic thin films by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique. A KrF Excimer laser (248 nm, 20 ns) operated at 20 Hz was used as an energy source for the deposition. Films are deposited under various deposition conditions, like substrate temperature, oxygen pressure, post annealing and applied external magnetic field depending upon the target material characteristics. On the basis of the structure the deposited films are classified as cubic spinel ferrites (NiFe2O4 and ZnMnZrFeO), Hexaferrite (BaFe12O19) and Alloy (NdFeCo).

Spinel ferrite thin films are promising candidates for high frequency applications due to their remarkable electrical and magnetic properties. Cobalt ferrite thin films have gained widespread interests in the applications of magneto-optical recording due to their large perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy. The addition of non-magnetic Cr3+ ions could produce sufficient changes in the structure of cobalt ferrite. In order to achieve homogeneous cobalt chromium ferrite (CoCr0.5Fe1.7O4) thin films, various techniques such as electron beam evaporation, pulsed laser deposition (PLD), sol-gel, dip coating and spray pyrolysis have been developed. The deposition of CoCr0.5Fe1.7O4 thin films by electron beam evaporation technique is the focus of this book. This book also covers the effect of annealing temperature on structural, surface morphological, magnetic and optical properties of cobalt chromium ferrite thin films. It is noted that Ms and Hc increases with annealing temperature. Band gap energy and optical constants (n,k,ϵ) decreases and increases with temperature indicative of good quality of thin films. So, the contents of this book will be helpful for the new researchers.

Energy plays a vital role in the development of any country. Near-field microwave microscopy has been used as a non-destructive tool for current distribution mapping in high-Tc superconductors and other conducting films at room temperature. The focused microwave emitted from the tip of a near-field scanning microwave microprobe is absorbed in the thin film in a small spot of size approximately same as the size of the probe tip. The heat will spread into the adjacent regions in the thin film sample through thermal diffusion. The temperature rise due to local heating will lead to the change in the local resistivity of the sample which results in a voltage response depending on the local current density and the input microwave power. The map of voltage response acquired while the microwave probe scans the film surface can provide information about the surface morphology and the non-uniformity of the electromagnetic properties of the film. Hence in order to understand the absorption of microwave radiation in conducting thin films, a theoretical model based on heat diffusion is developed in this book to determine how the different parameters affect the temperature rise and heat diffusion.

The method of CVD (chemical vapor deposition) is a versatile technique to fabricate high-quality thin films and structured surfaces in the nanometer regime from the vapor phase. Already widely used for the deposition of inorganic materials in the semiconductor industry, CVD has become the method of choice in many applications to process polymers as well. This highly scalable technique allows for synthesizing high-purity, defect-free films and for systematically tuning their chemical, mechanical and physical properties. In addition, vapor phase processing is critical for the deposition of insoluble materials including fluoropolymers, electrically conductive polymers, and highly crosslinked organic networks. Furthermore, CVD enables the coating of substrates which would otherwise dissolve or swell upon exposure to solvents. The scope of the book encompasses CVD polymerization processes which directly translate the chemical mechanisms of traditional polymer synthesis and organic synthesis in homogeneous liquids into heterogeneous processes for the modification of solid surfaces. The book is structured into four parts, complemented by an introductory overview of the diverse process strategies for CVD of polymeric materials. There have been extraordinary developments in nanomaterials in the past two decades. Nanomaterial processing is one of the key components for this success. Semiconductor clusters have one extraordinarily important property that on doping and on changes in size, their properties change appreciably and in a controllable way. Current research into semiconductor clusters is focused on the properties of thin films having nanometre range grain size. The wide range of optical and electrical properties of II-VI group compounds make them an important class of materials and competing candidates for silicon and other semiconductor materials in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. In this monograph, the structural, spectroscopic and optoelectronic properties of Cadmium Sulfide, Cadmium Telluride and Zinc Oxide thin films are studied in detail. The effects of substrate and grain size on structural and optical properties of these materials are also discussed. Moreover, the synthesis of CdS nanoparticles and fabrication of ZnO thin films by the sol-gel methods and their spectroscopic characterization are described. The ab-initio DFT calculations are carried for the computations of the DOS and band structures of the CdS hexagonal wurtzite, CdTe zinc blende and ZnO hexagonal wurtzite. Effect of Cd dopping in ZnO is also studied theoretically.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Materials Science, Asian Insitute of Technology, language: English, abstract: A novel approach of multilayered thin film based on layer-by-layer deposition using colloidal nanoparticles was carried out in this work. The films were made by the self-assembly of oppositely charged metal and dielectric nanoparticles, alternately capped with polymers. Synthesized colloidal suspensions of gold nanoparticles (~20nm) and silica nanoparticles (~30nm) were used as the building blocks for the self-organisation of the films. Capping with PDDA and chitosan was used effectively to control the optical absorption of the surface plasmon resonance peaks of the gold nanoparticles. Using different combinations of layer formation, absorption characteristics in the near-ultraviolet (NUV), green and blue region were controlled through capping and varying the thickness of the film. Capping with chitosan or PDDA reduced the absorption peak of the coated silica nanoparticles in a similar fashion. Peak absorption in the UV range was achieved by assembling bare silica nanoparticles layers onto layers of gold nanoparticles. Transmission color was controlled (less than 1% color distance per added bi-layer) by changing the film thickness. Optical modeling of multilayer thin films constructed with oppositely charged nanoparticles helped us to understand phenomenon such as surface plasmon resonance, absorbance, transmittance and reflectance. From Paul Verhoeven’s The Cold Heart in 1950 to Konrad Petzold’s The Story of the Goose Princess and Her Loyal Horse Falada in 1989, East Germany’s state-sponsored film company, DEFA (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), produced over forty feature-length, live-action fairy-tale films based on nineteenth-century folk and literary tales. While many of these films were popular successes and paved the way for the studio’s other films to enter the global market, DEFA’s fairy-tale corpus has not been studied in its entirety. In The Politics of Magic: DEFA Fairy-Tale Films, Qinna Shen fills this gap by analyzing the films on thematic and formal levels and examining their embedded agendas in relation to the cultural politics of the German Democratic Republic. In five chapters, Shen compares the films with earlier print versions of the same stories and analyzes revisions made in DEFA’s film adaptations. She also distinguishes the DEFA fairy-tale films from National Socialist, West German, and Disney adaptations of the same tales. Her archival work reconstitutes the cultural-historical context in which films were produced and received, and incorporates the films into the larger narrative of DEFA. For the first time, the banned DEFA fairy-tale comedy, The Robe (1961/1991), is discussed in depth. This work is aimed to understand the effectiveness of using this technique in multispectral satellite imagery and to study its effectiveness in different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. This work also aimed in analyzing variations of spatial and spectral resolutions of a sensor affect the performance of the CLAHE technique by means of comparing quantitative parameters of the enhanced images between the sensors. A new performance parameter called Degree of Contrast Enhancement (DCE) has also been formulated so as to quantify the amount of increase/decrease in contrast between the enhanced and original images on application of the CLAHE algorithm on it. A general idea of the feature that can be enhanced in each spectral region was also studied. The results showed that the technique was most effective for shorter wavelengths when compared to longer wavelength regions. Nano-size metal clusters produced inside a NC 200 gas aggregation source are deposited on a substrate and these cluster films are characterized by different techniques to study: the cluster growth and transport mechanisms inside the cluster source, the cluster size dependence on the temperature inside the cluster forming chamber and at the time of deposition, chemical composition, etc. Analyzing the Ti nano-clusters at various temperature inside the cluster forming chamber, it is observed that the cluster parameters strongly depend on the temperature of the magnetron chamber walls. Molecules of titanium oxides may be nuclei of condensation and accelerate the nucleation process. A theoretical analysis based on experimental results helps to describe various stages of cluster evolution from their formation up to the deposition on the substrate and provides estimations for parameters of the processes involving clusters.

Proximal humerus fracture are not uncommon. Earlier these fracture were treated conservatively but now these fracture are treated surgically with different technique, viz;percutaneous pinning, locking plate tension band wiring and nail. There have been extraordinary developments in nanomaterials in the past two decades. Nanomaterial processing is one of the key components for this success. This volume, titled Processing of Nanoparticle Materials and Nanostructured Films, is a collection of the papers presented at Controlled Processing of Nanoparticle-based Materials and Nanostructured Films symposium held during the Materials Science and Technology 2009 conference (MS&T’09), October 25-29, 2009 in Pittsburgh, PA. It summarizes the progress that has been achieved most recently in understanding and processing nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films. Nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films hold great promise to enable a broad range of new applications. This includes high energy conversion efficiency fuel cells, smart materials, high performance sensors, and structural materials under extreme environments. However, many barriers still exist in understanding and controlling the processing of nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films. In particular, agglomeration must be controlled in powder synthesis and processing to enable the fabrication of homogeneous green or composite microstructures, and microstructure evolution must be controlled to preserve the size and properties of the nanostructures in the finished materials. Also, novel nanostructure designs are highly needed at all stages of bulk and thin film nanomaterial formation process to enable unique performances, low cost, and green engineering. This volume focuses on three general topics, 1) Processing to preserve and improve nanoscale size, structure, and properties, 2) Novel design and understanding of new nanomaterials, such as new synthesis approaches, templating, and 3D assembly technologies, and 3) Applications of nanoparticle assemblies and composites and thin films.
