Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 2, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation, language: English, abstract: This research paper investigates the dynamic relationship between Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) and four selected macroeconomic variables namely exchange rate, inflation rate, crude oil price and foreign direct investment. The research consists of 108 monthly observations from the period of January 2007 to December 2015.In this research, the Augmented Dickey-Fuller test (ADF) showed that at 5% significance level, all the variables are stationary at first difference. For the diagnostic tests, there is no multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, autocorrelation, and model specification problems. However, normality problem was detected in the model. Moreover, Granger causality test and OLS regression model were carried out to determine the short-run and long-run relationships between the KLCI and the selected macroeconomic variables respectively. Results suggest that in the short-run there is no relationship between the KLCI and the four selected macroeconomic variables. However, in the long-run exchange rate, inflation rate, and crude oil prices are found to significantly affect the performance of KLCI, whereas foreign direct investment is found not to influence the movements of KLCI. The exchange rate and inflation negatively affect the KLCI, and the crude oil price has a positive impact in the KLCI movements.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,0, University of Passau, language: English, abstract: Today there are dozens of papers existing which investigate the relationship between macroeconomic variables such as GDP growth, exchange rates, inflation, etc. and the 4 factors used in the Carhart 4-factor model. However, most of the papers select corresponding control variables a priori and might miss some macroeconomic variables which hold much information about one of the factors. Overcoming this problem constitutes the core of this paper. With a three tiered statistical procedure which comprises the use of clustering and LASSO regressions I am aiming at solving that challenge. I start with more than 300 macroeconomic control variables which proxy for all possible variables out there and select those with the highest explanatory power.

This book briefs the work of a study which investigates the existence of long-run relationships between the Turkish banking Return Index and macroeconomic variables namely Interest rate, real exchange rate and money supply. The study was applied for the period span of January 2002 to December 2013. The techniques used to analyze the data were Time series analysis. First Johansen and Juselius' cointegration test was applied to examine the existence of a long-run association between the selected variables. The findings revealed the existence of a long-run relationship among the variables during the period of study. Second Granger causality test was implemented to find the causality direction among the variables. The results also indicated divergent to previous studies a unidirectional Granger causality between Turkish banking returns Index and the exchange rate.

This book considers the interrelation among macroeconomic politics, macroeconomic policymakers, macroeconomic policies, and macroeconomic perform ance. This interaction is examined using the expectational Phillips curve model, which measures macroeconomic outcomes in terms of inflation and unemployment. The subject of macroeconomic politics mainly focuses on voter behavior, presidential reelection ambition, and political party priorities. These political factors influence the macroeconomic policy actions of the president, Congress, and the central bank; the analysis takes into account both fiscal and monetary policies. The author's examination of citizen sentiment is based on rational voter theory and the median voter model. He compares the effects of macroeconomic farsightedness versus shortsightedness in voters and contrasts the conservative versus liberal perspectives on macroeconomic policy and performance. The empirical component of the analysis examines the electoral and partisan political business cycle effects upon the U.S. economy, and evidence of idiosyncratic effects during the time frame of 1961-2014 is found. Finally, the author discusses macroeconomic influence on various measures of voter sentiment, such as presidential job approval, and presidential and congressional election outcomes.

Exchange rate communication is a special form of macroeconomic news that is issued by central banks. Existing research on the effect of this communication has lead to often diverging result that illustrate the high intensity and dynamics of the current academic debate with regard to this matter. On one hand evidence of a relatively high impact on the mean and volatility of currency markets is found (e.g. by Fratzscher (2004)) whereas others (e.g. Jansen, de Haan (2005)) do not chronicle statistically significant and persistent results. The difficulty of understanding the response of currency markets becomes even harder when the significance of the respective context of news e.g. day of the week effect is considered or asymmetric responses are taken into account. Among the group of central banks especially the European Central Bank has attracted high attention in academic research. Preceding studies generally create dummy variables to measure ECB communication. These variables are then by different methods regressed against the exchange rate or other financial as...

The motivation is to track the impact of the observed change in the tax structure on economic growth in order to inform policy. Two tax structures namely pre Value Added Tax (VAT) and post VAT were identified and their impacts evaluated. The empirical analysis was anchored on the endogenous growth theoretical framework which allowed for linking tax structures to growth. Econometric models were then developed to explore the relationship between the identified tax structures and economic growth. The first model present a growth equation with average tax rate variable, while the second model is where the specific tax variables were included alongside variables in the first model. The third, fourth and fifth models were used to test the robustness of the second model. This was accomplished basically by introducing additional variables. Prior to the empirical estimations, the standard tests of unit root and co-integration analysis were conducted to ascertain the appropriate estimation procedure and technique(s) to use. The unit root test show that all the variables of the models are stationary at the first difference, while the co-integration analysis indicates that one model ...

Diploma Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften), language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate whether migration affects Austrian economic growth. Migration is seperated into total and foreign migration. The framework of this analysis is the Neoclassical Solow-Swan model. Analogous to the main results of this model, the two types of - convergence and an augmented version of the model regarding the two migration variables will be tested. The empirical work is based on a data set especially created for Austria, which covers the time period from 1961 to 2002. This data set provides a clear tendency towards absolute convergence. The test of conditional convergence verifies that the Austrian federal states started at different technological status and converge at a speed of 3, 54% per year. Furthermore, this test points out that the Solow-Swan models findings are not asserted, but some of the variables help to improve the results of the test. The augmented model, which includes the migration variables, leads to the conclusion, that total migration in Austria has a positive and highly significant influence on the growth of GDP per capita, while foreign migration also suggests the positive relationship but only at a 10% level of significance.

The crisis period made much more clear that a macroeconomic policy coordination framework is indispensable as there is great sensibility and high risk for contagion effects. The structure of EMU in its highest level of integration as of one monetary authority vis-à-vis many fiscal authorities brings about several specific aspects regarding coordination. In order to achieve and ensure economic stability in such a unique constellation there have been established several measures and frameworks with the Stability and Growth Pact as the centre point. Designed on the grounds of and motivated by the objective of stabilising the overall economy, the pact promotes fiscal discipline through limiting government deficits and debts in order to prevent adverse fiscal spillover effects and freeriding behaviour of national fiscal authorities which could risk price and overall macroeconomic stability of the common currency area. This however brings about limitations for governments to discretionarily react to national economic needs and conditions. This bachelor thesis addresses the resulting tension between a theoretical and fundamental need for macroeconomic policy coordination in a monetary uni...

Researcher has used annual data from December 1980 to June 2007, to examine the stochastic properties of the variables, and has taken care of the expected shift in the series due to the start of the liberalization program in the early 1990s. State Bank General Price Index (SBGPI) with base 1980-81 is used for stock prices whereas for real variables GDP, and investment, at constant prices of 1980-81 were used. The descriptive statistics indicate a much higher expansion in stock prices relative to real variables. However, the stock prices also experienced much higher volatility during the sample period whereas the real variables seem to be stable. The correlation analysis shows low correlations between stock prices and real variables. However, there is evidence of significant increase in these correlations in the post reform period suggesting that these reforms resulted in significant improvement in the behavior of stock market and its linkages to the economy. In the formal investigation, the co-integration regressions indicate the presence of a long run relationship between stock prices and real variables. Regarding the cause and...

This study used the least square method to find out the relationship of dependent and independent variables. It has taken leverage as a dependent variable and firm size, growth, liquidity, tangibility, non debt tax shield, and profitability as a independent variables, while the 3 independent variables have not supported the assumption (riddance test) of linear regression model, which is profitability liquidity and growth, thus its carry out the research on the remaining 4 variables which is dependent variable leverage and independent variables non debt tax shield, tangibility and firm size. The outcome of the research is demonstrated after analyzing that there is negative relationship in between the firm size and Non debt tax shield with leverage, while there is positive relationship in between the tangibility and leverage. So after analyzing it has been determined the main determinates of capital structure of the cement industry is tangibility of asset.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1 (A), Wollega University (wollega University), course: Development Economics, language: English, abstract: This study attempts to investigate the effect of government expenditure on private investment in Ethiopia over the period 1980-2012. The central question of this study is weather government expenditure has a positive or crowding in effect (complementary hypothesis) or a negative or crowding out effect (the substitutability hypothesis )on private investment in Ethiopia. To achieve its objective it adopted a modified flexible accelerator model to enlighten on the economic relationship between private investment and the other variables and used the modern technique of vector auto regressive model (VAR) and vector error correction model(VECM)as its methodology. The study also used the Johansen-Juselius (1990) cointegration analysis of a multivariate system of equation to estimate the long run relationship between government expenditure and private investment to determine the order of integration of the variable and Granger-Causality test was undertaken to determine causal relationship between the variables. In addition to this the study employs the Augmented Dicky-Fuller (ADF) unit root test and phillip perron test. The statistical tests reveal that all-time series data are non-stationary in their level and they become stationary after diffrencing.i.e.they are integrated of order one I(1).The ...

Pakistan constitutes a valuable case study for investigating the dynamics of persistently high rates of deficits. The budget and trade deficits occurred concurrently with acute macro economic imbalances and indebtedness, which is a major cause of concern. In Pakistan, little is known with authenticity, about the channels through which changes in these deficits percolate the macroeconomic system. Most of the studies conducted outside Pakistan, assert, some support for the maintained proposition that budget deficit, in so for lead to increase in money supply do cause inflation affects interest rates and trade deficit. But identification of the model, measurement and estimation, forecasting ability, applications of impulsive response functions and variance decompositions along with causality tests are still the matter of investigation. This book filled the gap by establishing the linkages of deficits with the macroeconomic variables of Pakistan economy in vector Autoregressive Model. The book therefore, provides extensive applications of VARMA and cointegration techniques. The book is highly recommendable for economists and graduate students.

This paper investigates how institutional and macroeconomic factors influence the profit efficiency frontier of Russian banks. We demonstrate that the macroeconomic environment is crucial for constructing the profit frontier. The cargo transportation index, exchange rate, and intermediation ratio have a positive relationship with this efficiency frontier while the share of loan loss provision in the loan portfolio is negatively associated with it. In addition, we find that such institutional determinants as a bank’s location, branch network diversity, and ownership type matter for constructing this frontier.

Time series data were derived from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin, while the method of analysis was the Johansen Cointegration test, vector error correction method and the Wald test of coefficient. The result of the findings showed that there is a significant relationship between explanatory variables (government expenditure, interest rate and money supply) taken jointly and the dependent variable (real gross domestic product) in the long run. The coefficient of error correction term is -0.02 showing a 2% yearly adjustment towards the long run equilibrium. This proves that there is a relationship between the dependent variable- real gross domestic product and the independent variables - government expenditure, money supply and interest rate in the long run. The estimated coefficients of the short run model indicate no significant relationship between the dependent variable real gross domestic product and independent variables government expenditure, money supply and interest rates taken together but individually a short run relationship exist between the fiscal variable (government expenditure) and real GDP and between the monetary variable (money supply and interest rate) and rea...

New Approaches to Macroeconomic Modeling: Evolutionary Stochastic Dynamics, Multiple Equilibria, and Externalities As Field Effects

This book contributes substantively to the current state of art of macroeconomic modeling by providing a method for modeling large collections of possibly heterogeneous agents subject to nonpairwise externality called field effects, that is, feedback of aggregate effects on individual agents or agents using state-dependent strategies. By adopting a level of microeconomic description that keeps track of compositions of fractions of agents by types or strategies, time evolution of the microeconomic states is described by (backward) Chapman-Kolmogorov equations. Macroeconomic dynamics naturally arise from these equations by expansion of the solutions in some power series of the number of participants. Specification of the microeconomic transition rates thus leads to macroeconomic dynamic models. This approach provides a consistent way for dealing with multiple equilibria of macroeconomic dynamics by ergodic decomposition and associated calculations of mean first passage times, and stationary probabilities of equilibria provide further useful information on macroeconomic behavior. This book ends with a set of elaborations, sketches of further topics of research, and a collection of supporting materials in the Appendix.

Predicting Nursing Student Success. It is important that higher education administrators and nursing programs implement admission practices that are fair, efficient, and effective. Often academic achievement is used as the primary screening and selection criterion without comprehensive study regarding the effectiveness of those variables in predicting student success. This book describes the state of the literature regarding the use of academic achievement to predict success in a variety of professional programs. This book also disseminates the results of a study involving 294 nursing students in an associate degree nursing program. The study yielded important information regarding which academic and demographic variables were predictive of nursing program completion and NCLEX-RN success. Specific recommendations are presented for policy and future research. Recommendations focus on increasing emphasis on variables predictive of student success in admission policy, using caution when using test scores for screening and selection of applicants, and employing a variety of variables in the ranking of applicants.

Monetary policy is that part of the macroeconomics, which attempts to achieve a set of objectives that are expressed in terms of several macroeconomic variables such as inflation, real output, money supply, exchange rate or employment. As a result, any change in the monetary policy will have an effect on these variables. For instance, monetary policy actions such as changes in the central bank discount rate may have an indirect effect on these variables. Therefore, it has been said that as broader financial markets are quick to incorporate new information, a more direct and contiguous effect of changes in the monetary policy instruments may be identified using financial data. Hence, in order to identify the monetary policy mechanism transmission into the stock market, understanding the sensitivity of stock market with respect to monetary policy is very important. This book examines whether current economic activities or more specifically the monetary policy tools of Bangladesh and India can explain stock market returns in short run and long-run horizon by using a number of multivariate tests.

Software tries to solve complex problems of the real world. In addition, customers' expectations concerning the quality of the software are rising steadily. Therefore, testing the software before it is delivered to a customer is a necessity. While testing software completely is impossible, the test department must use techniques in order to test critical parts in the software first. Furthermore, the test department has to provide best possible information about the quality of the software achieved through passing several tests. This requirement can be met only if testing is a structured and monitored process. We find cointegration among the variables involved and that the value of the US dollar is a significant part in the long-run relationship. The causal links within the long-run relationship are examined using the procedure suggested by Toda & Yamamoto (1995) to test for Granger causality in the presence of I(1) variables. The results show that no causal effect of the US dollar on oil prices can be found. This contradicts the view that the US dollar is driving real oil prices. There is even evidence that none of the fundamentals is causing real oil prices. Moreover, real oil prices are found to have an indirect causal effect on the US dollar. This contradicts standard models such as the Krugman (1983) model which suggest a direct link.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Innovation economics, grade: none, , course: Economy - Theory of Competition, Competition Policy, language: English, abstract: Current existing business simulation and diagnosis models only consider a reduced number of factors or variables, most only two variables represented by 2x2 matrices, not linking multiple existing factors and variables related to the business environment in order to deliver a final and single output, which could be used as the core indication for the decision-making process. That has led to an important question: How can information represented in multiple 2x2 matrices be reduced to a single representation? Or, in other words, can we interconnect two or more 2x2 matrices and create a new matrix that represents all variables in place?Initially, the practical research work, which served as the base for this paper, focused on existing quantitative models of two and more variables and on theirs final delivered output. As none of those models proved to be capable of producing a final single output when considering more than two variables, the practical research derived to the tentative of finding a mathematical model that could integrate multi-variables and produce a single final output. The proposed models in this paper will provide decision makers with single pieces of information, which have unique and unmistakable meanings, eliminating confusion and potential error at the momen...

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Communications - Miscellaneous, , course: Master of Business Administration, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACTThis Master's thesis sought to assess and analyze the variables capable of influencing loyalty of mobile phone subscribers as well as how service providers can enhance loyalty of their customers in Nigeria. The study was basically a survey that used the quantitative approach. A structured questionnaire was developed and personally administered to a sample of University of Ilorin students across four major GSM operators in the country. Four hundred (400) respondents were sampled through a stratified random sampling. Out of this, three hundred and forty-eight (348) copies of the questionnaire constituting 87% response rate were got for analysis. Of the eleven (11) operational factors that were used to assess loyalty of customers in the Nigeria Mobile Telecoms industry, all variables except Brand Image and Service Centre Quality were found to be capable of influencing customer loyalty and also considered as the most important loyalty variables in the industry. The unavailability of Mobile Number Portability was found to be a prominent factor in tying consumers down to service providers while the generally low satisfaction with the present state of service delivery in the industry also plays a role in this direction. Therefore, the retention been enjoyed by the service providers can be described as circumstanti...

The paper presents a parametric approach to forecasting vectors of macroeconomic indicators, which takes into account functional and correlation dependencies between them. It is asserted that this information allows to achieve a steady decrease in their mean-squared forecast error. The paper also provides an algorithm for calculating the general form of the corrected probability density function for each of modelled indicators. In order to prove the efficiency of the proposed method we conduct a rigorous simulation and empirical investigation.

Thesis research work was carried out in different places of Bangladesh and pigs from different management system were sampled. Fecal sample examination and visceral examination was conducted for helminth parasites. By fecal sample examination 16 different types of helminth ova were identified. Thorugh visceral examination we were able to identify six species of helminth parasites. We also looked for the prevalence of different types of ectoparasites. The chi-square test or the Fisher`s exact test was used to find out any significant associations between the prevalences of the helminths and the management systems. Where chi-square or the Fisher`s exact test were significant, odds ratios were computed for comparing the prevalence of helminths at different management systems. The significant test of the difference between the means of parasitic load in of the two management systems was performed by two-sample t-test. Three multivariable logistic regression models were fitted for identifying the risk factor (s) that significantly influences the respons variables.

Consensus is lacking on early diagnostic criteria and the exact symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). A new, in-office test may help physicians detect the early symptoms of AD, based upon new National Institute of Aging (NIA) criteria. However, a gap exists in knowledge regarding physicians' current use or intent to use the new protocols. Choreographing the descriptive AD terminology in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV-TR and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) is recommended. Thus, the purpose of this study was to understand possible contributing factors to physician's use or intent to use of the new NIA's diagnostic protocol. Data collected from 55 clinicians within two Northern California counties were analyzed using a bivariate test. The two dependent variables were physicians' use of, or intent to use, the NIA protocol; the six independent variables were number of years since graduating from medical school, area of specialty, percentage of patients over age 60 years, physician's gender, age, and knowledge about AD, as indicated by performance on the Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge Scale.

The findings of the stationery test shows the present of unit root. The OLS regression results shows that import, interest rate, real effective exchange rate, and inflation are positively correlated with GDP, while export is negatively correlated with GDP. The result shows that GDP lag, import, and real effective exchange rate can not influence economic growth while export, interest rate, and inflation can highly influence economic growth of the Gambia, even though export negatively influence economic of the Gambia. This positive relationship suggests that the economy of the Gambia can potentially be expanded by means of trade, while the negative relationship means that it has no bearing on the economic growth of the Gambia, From the overall analysis, it is revealed that the variables included in the model have a 50% influence on economic growth while the remaining 50% constitute variables not included in the model. A well-known concept in modern capital market theory is that only systematic risk factors affect security prices. Macroeconomic announcements are among the most important news for financial markets because the state of the economy is a prime candidate for such a source of non-diversifiable risk. This book investigates the effects of US macroeconomic news on three financial markets that have received less attention in the literature so far. The markets of interest are the commodity futures market, the German stock index futures market, and the German bond futures market. I investigate not only price effects, but also liquidity effects as well as the channels of cross-border information flow.I find that commodity markets as well as international stock and bond markets are likewise affected by the release of US macroeconomic news. The strength of the commodity price response depends on the state of the economy and news about the US economy is more important for German stock markets than domestic economic news. For an investor in any of these markets, this book provides valuable information on how to adjust his trading strategies around the release of macroeconomic news. Moreover, my findings contribute to the understanding of cross-border information flow. First, I find that both domestic and foreign economic news induce significant price and liquidity effects. Second, I find that there are two important channels of information transmission for foreign news: the direct response ...

In this paper, we examine nonlinear interrelationship between energy consumption and output level for a panel of G7 countries. For this purpose, we propose a nonlinear cointegration test in heterogeneous panels for testing the presence of a cointegrating relationship that follows a globally stationary exponential smooth transition (ESTR) process, and apply our test for investigating long-run relationship between energy use and economic growth in the case of the G7 countries. Our results suggest the presence of a long-run relationship between these two variables whereas adjustment to the equilibrium is inherently nonlinear. After establishing long-run relationship between energy consumption and output, we estimate a Panel Smooth Transition Vector Error Correction Model and apply nonlinear Granger causality tests in order to analyze the direction of the causality between these variables. We find that the causality between energy consumption and output level is dependent on the phases of business cycle. Our results highlight importance of taking account of possible nonlinearities in analysing output-energy causality nexus and designing energy policies.

The European debt crisis has become much more serious recently and spread from small economy, e.g. Greece to larger economy, e.g. Spain, Italy. A major reason for this problem is the unique characteristic of fiscal policy and monetary policy within the euro zone. The national fiscal policies are decided by every member state, and may be different from each other, while the single united monetary policy is made by the ECB. As a result, the macroeconomic coordination problem is likely to emerge. This paper investigates the interactions between monetary and fiscal policies within a monetary union and assesses the ECB's policy in promoting the macroeconomic coordination. Two types of macroeconomic coordination failure may emerge in the context of the monetary union. Since the coordination failure can bring large inefficient loss to the economy at the union level, the macroeconomic coordination is absolutely necessary.

This approach takes four variables into consideration, which should be pursued amongst an economy:1. Sustainable growth,2. Equilibrium of balance of payments,3. Price stability,4. High employment. In the following paper, the economic progress of the United Kingdom within the previous 10 years should be evaluated using the "magic square" as a framework. Therefore, there will be the main focus on the most relevant macroeconomic indicators, such as the growth of GDP, inflation rate, unemployment rate and current account balance, in order to provide a sound overview regarding UK's overall economic development.

This work deals with the possibility of implementing the year nine Swedish National test in Austria. The theoretical part of this book consists of topics such as the curriculum, English levels, standardised tests and skills. In European countries levels of English are described by the "Common European Framework of Languages (CEFRL)", therefore the implementation of the Swedish test in Austria should be feasible. The research was conducted by the same teacher in both countries and it was found that Swedish pupils have better English skills. The analysis of the test results illustrates that it would be possible to implement the Swedish National Test in Austria. Moreover the study showed that Austrian and Swedish pupils achieved their best results in the oral test. The test in the receptive skills was the most difficult one for both groups. Further investigations revealed that Sweden checks the English level of all year nine pupils every year. The aim thereby is to check the English level and to support a homogenous grading for the whole year.

Risk management is an integral part of financial market management. The dynamic nature of the financial market, and financial variables in particular, is evidenced by the empirical data which demonstrates that financial variables typically have a non-normal distribution. The contention of this book is to demonstrate whether the normality assumption inherent in the value at risk (VaR) measurement leads to flawed risk measurement outcomes. To help determine this, a comparative analysis between the conventional VaR method and a moment corrections method (MCM) was undertaken to assess the information effects of inter-day volatility on selected financial variables. The book then concludes by recommending which of these two approaches is more suited to identifying and thus, controlling for, risk in the financial markets.

Over the past several decades, an increase in mortality rates due to congestive heart failure has been observed. Although previous research highlights the importance of both supportive relationships and depressive symptoms in predicting a variety of physical health outcomes in this population, less is understood about how these variables relate to one another. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to provide an examination of this question. Results of the current work suggest that depressive symptoms are a pathway through which supportive relationships may influence physical functioning. This study adds to the growing body of research that has started examining the mechanisms through which supportive relationships influence physical health and should be especially useful to individuals in the fields of cardiovascular behavioral medicine and social-health psychology.

These include: family language, linguistic proficiency in Irish, residence (Gaeltacht vs. Galltacht), cultural identity, socio-educational background and gender. In addition, attitudes towards Irish and English will be compared. A questionnaire that had been successfully used in other areas was adapted and used in a sample of 62 adult speakers of Irish, about half of them (N=27) coming from traditionally Irish-speaking areas, or Gaeltacht, and the other half (N=35) coming from English-speaking areas, or Galltacht. 33 females and 29 males took part in the study. Scientific Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, , language: English, abstract: The main purpose of this essay is to examine the integrations between population variables and rural development in general and food security in particular. A critical review of literature and analysis of secondary data were carried out to understand these dynamic linkages. For all nations, people are the ultimate and the only recipient of development results. Even if the population variables are decisive planning inputs, however, they were ignored and treated as exogenous factors in the process of development planning during the 1950s and 1960s. And so, the resultant problems such as poverty, unemployment, inequality, and other social ills were pervasive and deep-rooted in rural areas of the developing countries. The major reason for this tragedy was belived to be the failure of development theories, policies, and approaches adopted during the 1950s and 60s. It was during the 1970s that the issue of integrating population factors into development planning attracted the attention of some international organizations (such as UN) and vigorously advocated since then. Therefore, so as to balance the pace of the population growth and rural development process, all development actors in Ethiopia should adopt holistic and synergetic approaches in such a way that enhance agricultural productivity and boost investment in rural social a...

Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Biology - Zoology, grade: Degree Awarded, University College Cork, language: English, abstract: Ballincollig reservoir is a small eutrophic lake located west of Cork city and south of Ballincollig town in county Cork, Ireland. The reservoir was studied for six months, from 7th February through 27th July, for the factors that may influence or regulate population dynamics (i.e. abundance and size structure) of the crustacean zooplankton. Various physico-chemical and biological parameters were measured and related to abundance and size structure of the crustacean zooplankton species/groups using the non-parametric Spearman's correlation test. Friedman's test was employed for the purpose of data analysis.Three cladoceran species: B. coregoni Baird, B. longirostris O.F.Muller, D. hyalina Leydig, and a genus Ceriodaphnia Dana as well as cyclopoid copepods were investigated during the study period. Water variables such as subsurface water temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and pH as well as secchi depth and chlorophyll a concentration did not show statistically significant spatial variation within the reservoir where as they varied significantly over time.Factors such as fish predation (top-down control), type and availability of phytoplankton (bottom-up control), water temperature and competition for resources among the crustacean zooplankton were found to regulate or influence abundance and size structure of t...

Covers a wide range of practical fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mass transfer problems This book covers the many issues that occur in practical fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mass transfer, and examines the basic laws (the conservation of matter, conservation of momentum, conservation of energy, and the second law of thermodynamics) of these areas. It offers problem solutions that start with simplifying engineering assumptions and then identifies the governing equations and dependent and independent variables. When solutions to basic equations are not possible, the book utilizes historical experimental studies. It also looks at determining appropriate thermo-physical properties of the fluid under investigation, and covers solutions to governing equations with experimental studies. Case Studies in Fluid Mechanics with Sensitivities to Governing Variables offers chapters on: draining fluid from a tank; vertical rise of a weather balloon; wind drag forces on people; Venturi meter; fluid’s surface shape in a rotating cylindrical tank; range of an aircraft; designing a water clock; water turbine under a dam; centrifugal separation of particles; ideal gas flow in nozzles and diffusers; water supply from a lake to a factory; convection mass transfer through air-water interface; heating a room by natural convection; condensation on the surface of a vertical plate in laminar flow regime; bubble rise in a glass of beer; and more. Covers a broad spectrum of problems in practical fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mass transfer Examines the basic laws of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and mass transfer Presents solutions to governing equations with experimental studies Case Studies in Fluid Mechanics with Sensitivities to Governing Variables will appeal to engineers working in thermo-physical sciences and graduate students in mechanical engineering.
