Your Inner Mammal takes on anxiety, anger and depression -- the major emotional maladies that afflict us in the cold, impersonal and threatening modern world. To do that, Dr. Neff builds on the concept of "your inner child." That concept has served us well in mental health for many years. If you are still a child - and a lucky one -- someone else may meet your emotional needs. But not if you are an adult. Your lover doesn't want to love you as a needy child. They want - and need - a competent adult. In short, the inner child concept tells you to attend to your own emotional needs. Your Inner Mammal tells you a lot more. It tells you what those needs are. And it provides chapter after chapter of tools to meet those needs - including chapters entitled, " The Importance of Being Calm," "Your Angry Mammal," "Your Inner Playmate," " Your Inner Dancer, " "Getting In Touch," and "You Are Part of Nature - Embrace It. Many treatment programs encourage verbal imitation and production without addressing the oral hypersensitivities that often inhibit the ability to produce verbal language in children with autism spectrum disorders. This guide introduces an oral-motor protocol designed to enhance the child's ability to produce more normal movement patterns. It is accompanied by activities that can be incorporated into the child's daily schedule at home or at school for improved eating and speech development. The suggestions and activities will enable parents and professionals to broaden food varieties in a child's diet, increase a child's ability to accept touch inside and around the mouth, and expand the number of sounds produced by a child.

The author worked with forest committees in order to study the development issues, needs and priorities of the community; the resources in the community; the community's judgment of the previous and current development projects; and the experience of the community in relation to the development projects. The author used situational analysis, direct and participant observation, as well as two focused group discussions to obtain the data. The participants were members of the forest committees who represent the communities living within the 10km radius from forest boundary. Study findings indicate that there are limited community development projects in the area. These projects cannot adequately meet the needs of the community and cannot sustainably lead to environment conservation. The community largely participated in the development as either casual laborers or self employed community group members. The willingness to participate was influenced by the desire to improve the living conditions, while barriers to participation included perceived corruption, myths about gender, age and development...

The term voluntourism has emerged with the commodification of volunteering missions in the past decade. This has directed to a change in focus from the needs of local communities and especially from children on-site to the adaption of programmes according to tourists' demand. With the increasing demand to work with vulnerable children in orphanages for short periods of time, which is more disadvantageous for the orphans, the need for child protection in the industry becomes highly apparent. This book introduces the subject of volunteer tourism and draws the relationship to corporate responsibility. It detects the impacts on children with special concern to orphanage establishments. An analysis of the current market of providers gives insights about the "non-existence" of child protection. Accordingly, four main gaps that display a risk for child protection can be settled, which leads to five major steps that providers should take to limit negative impacts for children. The book concludes that there should be no short-term missions involving direct contact with children and that all actors within the industry have to further enforce child protection and promote awareness.

Development economics entail all the aspects of the development process especially meant for the developing countries to overcome the challenges that impede development. This can be through education, education and man power development, restructuring market incentives, incorporating favorable social and political approaches and practices among other factors.Human beings however need streamlined social and economic systems that are able to achieve development through major changes in social structures, national institutions, cultures and attitudes as well as eradication of poverty, reduction of income inequality and acceleration of economic growth. The developing world needs a multi-disciplinary approach and ideas so as to come out of the economic backward situation. Micheal, P describes that because of heterogeneity of the developing world, and the complexity of the development process, development economics must be eclectic, attempting to combine relevant concepts and theories from traditional economics analysis along with new models and broader multi-disciplinary approaches from historical and co temporally development experience of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Debraj Ray puts it that development economics studies economics of the developing world and has made excellent use of economic theory, econometrics, anthropology, sociology, political science, biology and demography. It needs a lot more dimensional approach to understand it.

This book describes the administration and analysis of a needs assessment to identify top priorities to develop a Comprehensive Guidance Program (CGP). The assessment was given to junior high students and their parents. This is a comparison of students' and parents' perceptions of the needs of students in a junior high school setting. The findings indicate that parents and students shared similar views on themes of support for career and future plans, concern for more information on health issues, and concerns of what services the school should provide. However students' and parents' individual needs were not similar. Statistical Analysis show a very low overall correlation between the ranking of needs of the two groups. The findings led to the recommendation that thematic similarities should guide the development of programs and that community support should be sought to address individual priorities identified by each group. A major benefit of the study was the development of a process for the engagement of the community in school development. Further investigation may be needed to help understand the differences in the parents' and students' perceptions.

Working with principles from the fields of evolutionary and developmental biology (evo-devo), this fascinating work offers a new approach to analyzing child growth and development, examining each stage and transition in detail, from fetal development to preadulthood. Based on the author's in-depth review of the current literature and his own observations as a pediatric endocrinologist, the book demonstrates how the transitions between human life history phases represent unique periods of evolutionary adaptive response to the environment. In addition, the author explains why an understanding of these transition periods enables us to better understand the sequence and mechanisms of child growth as well as to better diagnose child growth disorders. Logically organized and clearly written, Evo-Devo of Child Growth: Sets a solid foundation of principles such as evolutionary thinking in medicine and child growth, life history theory, and heterochrony and allometry Examines the relationship between child growth and the theory of life history Applies evo-devo theory to fetal growth, infancy, childhood, juvenility, adolescence, and preadulthood Explores the trade-offs and adaptive phenotypic plasticity during transition periods Explains the role of life history theory in understanding and diagnosing growth disorders such as Down syndrome, Noonan syndrome, and Silver-Russell syndrome In addition to the author's own analysis and observations, this book also features notes from leading clinicians and evolutionary biologists, offering additional perspectives on the relationship between evo-devo and child growth and development. Evo-Devo of Child Growth provides a new perspective for evolutionary biologists to understand the phases and transitions of child growth. Moreover, it offers a new approach to help clinicians to better understand and diagnose a broad range of child growth disorders.

The core of our argument, therefore, is that NEEDS should have a human face through incorporation of humanistic approach to the implementation of the reforms. We have demonstrated, however, that comprehensive and humanistic approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive for they can be mutually inclusive and reinforcing as regards to implementation of NEEDS in Nigeria. This study focused on the role of World Bank in public and private sector reforms in Nigeria between 1999 and 2007.

The essential reference for human development theory, updated and reconceptualized The Handbook of Child Psychology and Developmental Science, a four-volume reference, is the field-defining work to which all others are compared. First published in 1946, and now in its Seventh Edition, the Handbook has long been considered the definitive guide to the field of developmental science. Volume 2: Cognitive Processes describes cognitive development as a relational phenomenon that can be studied only as part of a larger whole of the person and context relational system that sustains it. In this volume, specific domains of cognitive development are contextualized with respect to biological processes and sociocultural contexts. Furthermore, key themes and issues (e.g., the importance of symbolic systems and social understanding) are threaded across multiple chapters, although every each chapter is focused on a different domain within cognitive development. Thus, both within and across chapters, the complexity and interconnectivity of cognitive development are well illuminated. Learn about the inextricable intertwining of perceptual development, motor development, emotional development, and brain development Understand the complexity of cognitive development without misleading simplification, reducing cognitive development to its biological substrates, or viewing it as a passive socialization process Discover how each portion of the developmental process contributes to subsequent cognitive development Examine the multiple processes – such as categorizing, reasoning, thinking, decision making and judgment – that comprise cognition The scholarship within this volume and, as well, across the four volumes of this edition, illustrate that developmental science is in the midst of a very exciting period. There is a paradigm shift that involves increasingly greater understanding of how to describe, explain, and optimize the course of human life for diverse individuals living within diverse contexts. This Handbook is the definitive reference for educators, policy-makers, researchers, students, and practitioners in human development, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and neuroscience.

Resources must be put aside and injected into productive enterprises to create more wealth. Once an entrepreneur has set up his businesses, human resource should be well mobilised and well utilised to get the best out of it. Skilled ,trained and motivated labour is one sure way of making firms develop a competitive advantage. Products of a growing firm should be able to compete on the world market. These firms need support from governments and international community to develop capacity to improve human resource management. In this volume, African scholars engaged in research on the continent reflect on their recent and ongoing empirical studies. They discuss the strengths and limitations of research methods, theories, and interventions designed outside Africa to spur innovative research on the continent. And they explore how insights from African philosophical, theoretical, and empirical work can be combined with exogenous forms of knowledge to generate understanding of the processes of African children’s development in ways that are responsive to local contexts and meaningful for indigenous stakeholders. A new field of African child development research is emerging in African societies, focusing on children as valued and vulnerable members of society and potential civic leaders of the future. Systematic inquiries are now designed to enhance our understanding of how African children think, to discover effective ways of communicating with them, and to inform successful strategies of promoting their health, education, and preparation for adult responsibilities in society. This is the 146th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.

This book explains the continuum of trauma in all its complexity in succinct and straightforward terms, drawing on the latest thinking and research in neuroscience. It shows how teachers, while not specialist mental health professionals, can provide skilled and effective help within school and the classroom to children and young people for them to recover from trauma. It recognises the pressure on teachers and schools to meet national educational objectives, which can all too easily ignore the particular history and personal needs of individual pupils. The knowledge and strategies within this book will equip the busiest teachers to both recognise and to effectively respond to these particular needs and reduce their stress.

First published in 1946, and now in its Seventh Edition, the Handbook has long been considered the definitive guide to the field of developmental science. Volume 3: Social, Emotional, and Personality Development presentsup-to-date knowledge and theoretical understanding of the several facets of social, emotional and personality processes. The volume emphasizes that any specific processes, function, or behavior discussed in the volume co-occurs alongside and is inextricably affected by the dozens of other processes, functions, or behaviors that are the focus of other researchers' work. As a result, the volume underscores the importance of a focus on the whole developing child and his or her sociocultural and historical environment. Understand the multiple processes that are interrelated in personality development Discover the individual, cultural, social, and economic processes that contribute to the social, emotional, and personality development of individuals Learn about the several individual and contextual contributions to the development of such facets of the individual as morality, spirituality, or aggressive/violent behavior Study the processes that contribute to the development of gender, sexuality, motivation, and social engagement The scholarship within this volume and, as well, across the four volumes of this edition, illustrate that developmental science is in the midst of a very exciting period. There is a paradigm shift that involves increasingly greater understanding of how to describe, explain, and optimize the course of human life for diverse individuals living within diverse contexts. Everyone can impact the supply chain Supply Chain Management For Dummies helps you connect the dots between things like purchasing, logistics, and operations to see how the big picture is affected by seemingly isolated inefficiencies. Your business is a system, made of many moving parts that must synchronize to most efficiently meet the needs of your customers—and your shareholders. Interruptions in one area ripple throughout the entire operation, disrupting the careful coordination that makes businesses successful; that's where supply chain management (SCM) comes in. SCM means different things to different people, and many different models exist to meet the needs of different industries. This book focuses on the broadly-applicable Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) Model: Plan, Source, Make, Deliver, Return, and Enable, to describe the basic techniques and key concepts that keep businesses running smoothly. Whether you're in sales, HR, or product development, the decisions you make every day can impact the supply chain. This book shows you how to factor broader impact into your decision making process based on your place in the system. Improve processes by determining your metrics Choose the right software and implement appropriate automation Evaluate and mitigate risks at all steps in the supply chain Help your business function as a system to more effectively meet customer needs We tend to think of the supply chain as suppliers, logistics, and warehousing—but it's so much more than that. Every single person in your organization, from the mailroom to the C-suite, can work to enhance or hinder the flow. Supply Chain Management For Dummies shows you what you need to know to make sure your impact leads to positive outcomes.

What children really need has been misunderstood for most of human history. Drawing on the latest scientific research, philosophy, and psychology as well as her own clinical experience, Maxine illuminates the life of the child. This book promotes the child as a soul - unified in body, mind, and spirit. Articulated through the Foundational Needs Model, the complex interplay of the emotional, mental, psychological, spiritual and physical dimensions are revealed. Travel on a philosophical journey to consider children in a new way. Be supported as an adult to consider your own unmet needs from childhood and see how these same needs influence your relationship with children now. By supporting children to stay connected from the very beginning of life we are laying the foundations for lifelong wellbeing and for a brighter future for our childrenThe book is divided into three parts. Part One, The Push for Unity, offers the philosophical and scientific support for the notion of the child as a soul. I offer research that shows how the child purposefully brings forth the personal and collective past, so we all (adult and child) may review any imbalance or fragmentation in order to secure whole and unified growth. The second part of the book examines each of the seven Foundational Needs within my Foundational Needs Model, showing the complex interplay of the body-mind-spirit composite. After each individual Foundational Need is considered in light of key themes and a case study, you wil...

This book is an economic and philosophical discourse on sustainable economic development inspired by Ujamaa and the philosophy of self-reliance advocated by Julius Nyerere as a policy towards social and economic development. The book explores human empowerment as a means to sustainable economic development. It argues that human empowerment in developing countries can build on Nyerere's approach to development founded on community participation. However, self-reliance is not possible without the ability to build sustainable development and-, self-reliance philosophy and efforts towards development in their current forms have lacked the ability to intensify people's capability. Human empowerment is needed to produce people with vision, who can reflect on situations, initiate relevant and responsible action, and thereby transform situations for the common good. The empowerment I recommend is endowed on education, entrepreneurship and civil societies. Building on Amartya Sen's philosophy of the capability approach to development, empowerment will provide relevant solution for developing countries to break away from economic dependency and the vicious cycle of poverty.

The amount, and quality of training carried out varies enormously from organization to organization due to factors such as the degree of external change, for instance, new markets or new processes, the adaptability of existing workforce and importantly the extent to which the organization supports the idea of internal career development. Most organizations meet their needs for training in an ad hoc and haphazard way whiles others set about identifying their training needs, then design training activities in a rational manner and finally assess the results of training. This study, therefore, sought to determine the impact of Training and Development on public sector organizations using Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority (GPHA) as a case study. The study specifically examines the livelihoods of child headed households in the context of the DFID sustainable livelihoods framework and the poverty trap by Robert chambers. The book explores and establishes the livelihoods conditions, needs and problems of child headed households. The analysis reveals that much as NGOs have done a lot to assist child headed households, the impact of their programmes on the livelihoods of these children is minimal contrary to what is portrayed in their reports. This empirical study serves as a basis for policy formulation and change as well as programme design and intervention. Insights from this book are relevant to NGOs and other organisations dealing with orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs). It also provides useful guidelines to development researchers, students, donor agencies, and policy makers especially in the field of development assistance.
