It is the start of a series of journeys that are also a mental awakening. Though always a man of his time he finds himself asking the kind of questions that outsiders ask - dangerous for a common soldier but even more dangerous for someone who enjoys the favour of the emperor...

As it was, the Emperor's capital was permanently moved east from the immediate neighbourhood of what we call Si-ngan Fu in Shen Si province to the immediate neighbourhood of Ho-nan Fu in the modern Ho Nan province; and as a reward for his services the Warden was granted nearly the whole of the original imperial patrimony west of the Yellow River bend and on both sides of the Wei Valley. This was also in the year 771 B.C., and this is really one of the great pivot-points in Chinese history, of equal weight with the almost contemporaneous founding of Rome, and the gradual substitution of a Roman centre for a Greek centre in the development and civilization of the Far West.

Luigi Guicciardini The Sack of Rome

On May 5, 1527 Spanish, German, and Italian troops under the banner of the Holy Roman Emperor swarmed into Rome. Until December, when they were finally dispersed by plague, these troops plundered, tortured, raped, and murdered in the defenseless capital of Christendom. "The sack of Rome in 1527 was an event of tragic and decisive importance. It brought the Renaissance, the greatest period in Italian history, to its sudden and catastrophic end. We are fortunate to possess many eyewitness accounts of this extraordinary event. Only one contemporary account, however, offers an overview of the political and military situation in Italy that culminated in the sack of Rome. That account is here translated for the first time." George Bruce Malleson Ambushes and Surprises. An Analysis of Tactics from 217 B.C.-1857 A. D. by Describing the Historical Examples

A history and analysis of the most devastating tacticMost students of military history will be familiar with the works of George Bruce Malleson; he was a prodigious author on the subject and his scholarship has always been regarded as of the highest standard. This excellent book will be of much interest to those concerned with the practice of military craft. It examines critically and in detail that most desired of circumstances, which is when a battle is won, where the victorious outcome is all but certain instead of fought, where the potential for defeat is always possible. The unseen attack to the flank, the ambuscade and the sudden appearance of the enemy whose presence was unknown is not new to warfare. Indeed its principle is universal, since it is the method employed by every carnivorous creature that runs, flies or swims, in order to secure its meal and avoid injury in the process. Malleson provides eight examples of the tactic employed at its most devastating. We learn among others, of the defeat of the Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest, the destruction of Roland, knight of Charlemagne in the high passes of the Pyrenees and of Braddock and his column slaughtered in the dense forests of America during the French and Indian War. What makes this work particularly interesting is Malleson's decision to include two pieces, from the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny, where against the odds the surprised force under inspired leadership has managed, in measure, to pre...

Excerpt from Fifth Census Of Canada 1911, Vol. 5: Forest, Fisherly, Fur And Mineral ProductionThe quantity and value of Forest products cut on the farms of Canada in the year 1910 taken under date June 1, 1911, are given in Tables I to VIII.Incomparability of Statistics for 1901. In 1901 the Instructions to Enumerators read as in the case of agricultural products the enumerator will bear in mind that the Forest products are to be recorded only in the polling subdivision or other area in which they were cut. In 1911, they read as in the case of agricultural products the enumerator will be'ar in mind that the Forest products only of occupied farm lands which are situated within the enumerator's district are to be recorded in this schedule. The result of the difference in the Instructions to Enumerators in the two censuses is that neither the quantity nor the value of Forest products reported for 1910 are comparable with the quantity and value as reported for the Census of 1900, for the reason that the inquiry in the last census had reference only to the quantities and values of the various kinds of forest products cut on occupied farm lands while in the previous census (1901) the statistics were for all forest products (logs, square timber, poles, piles, sleepers, etc.) cut in the polling subdivision whether on Crown lands, limits or farms and no matter by whom.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. J. T. Headley Napoleon.s Imperial Guard. From Marengo to Waterloo

As with so much of what represented Napoleonic France, the Imperial Guard could trace its existence and spirit back to the Roman Empire of old. Where the Grand Army could look back to affiliate itself with the Legions, the Imperial Guard was nothing less than the Emperor's Praetorians-the elite-the best of the best. Its men coveted their position to the degree that they would often refuse promotion if it meant a transfer to a line regiment. Never squandered, when the Guard advanced it meant the battle was near to its end and victory once more a step away. Their steady presence would put courage into dispirited allied troops and shred the last vestige of morale from an enemy. They represented every branch of the Army and where their magnificent uniforms appeared under their tricolours and eagles, all knew there would also be the Emperor himself. This the story of Napoleon's Imperial Guard from the bearskin caps of the grenadiers to the flamboyance of their mounted chasseurs, their principal characters and the men who commanded them. From Marengo to Waterloo the Imperial Guard created a legend that is unparalleled in modern military history.

The major nations (500 BC) of Europe/Africa, centered around the western end of the Mediterranean, were the Etruscans, the Greeks, and the Carthaginians. Conflict between these peoples tended to be a way of life. The Battle of Himera (480 BC), saw the Greek forces of Gelon, King of Syracuse, and Theron, tyrant of Agrigentum, defeat the Carthaginian force of Hamilcar the Magonid, ending a Carthaginian bid to restore the deposed tyrant of Himera. The battle led to the crippling of Carthage's power in Sicily for many decades. The Battle of Veii (396 BC), after Rome had suffered severe defeats against the Etruscans, was won by the Romans in their attack on the Etruscan city of Veii, digging the soft ground below the walls and infiltrating through the city's sewage system. Not interested in capitulation terms, but in Veii's complete destruction, the Romans slaughtered the entire adult male population and made slaves of all the women and children. This capture of Veii and its surrounding territories marked the first major expansion of Rome. Rome increased its territory by seventy percent, and became the most powerful nation of the central peninsula.

Lou Shook REPUBLIC IN DISCORD. BOOK 3

Rome’s growth continued, following the defeat of Carthage (146 BC), ending the Numantine War (133 BC). However, the Roman republic was bloated with the effects of extensive expansion abroad, challenging the fundamental values of Roman culture. Tiberius Gracchus was passing laws of reform to help rectify this domestic crisis – and was assassinated by the patrician favoring majority of the Senate, led by his cousins Scipio Nasica and Scipio Aemilianus (husband of Tiberius’ sister, Sempronia Graccha). This was followed by Lucius Opimius (Roman consul in 121 BC) in the slaying of Gaius Gracchus (brother of Tiberius) and ordering the execution of 3,000 supporters of Gaius Gracchus without trial – in opposition to Gaius support of social reforms, far wider reaching than those of his brother Tiberius. The next major impact was the reforms to the Roman Legions instituted by Gaius Marius, leading to the eventual collapse of the Republic. The legions became more loyal to their generals rather than the state. The loyalty of such legions is what allowed Marius himself, Sulla, and eventually Julius Caesar to march on Rome. It led ultimately to the destruction of the Republican form of government and to the principate system of the Empire.

Denis Charles Parquin The Adventures of Captain Parquin. the Recollections of a French Cavalry Officer of the Chasseurs During the Napoleonic Era

The gripping memoirs of a cavalry officer of the First EmpireThis is the story of a remarkable French cavalryman of the Napoleonic era, Denis Charles Parquin, an officer of the Chasseurs a Cheval. Memoirs of soldiers of Napoleon's army are always exciting, but few exist in English translation. Those that have been translated such as the recollections of Coignet, Barres, Bourgogne and Marbot have become famous and provide a valuable resource of first hand information. Parquin joined the 20th regiment of the horse chasseurs in 1806 and served with it until 1813 rising in rank to lieutenant. He fought at Saalfeld, Jena, Eylau, Wagram, in the Iberian Peninsula at Ciudad Rodrigo and at Salamanca, gathering wounds as well as regimental promotions. In 1813, Parquin agreed to take a reduction in rank to join the elite Chasseurs a Cheval of the Imperial Guard, where he became the emperor's escort on the march and in the field. Napoleon personally awarded Parquin the cross of the Legion of Honour during a review in the same year. In the final battles of the First Empire Parquin fought at Leipzig, Hanau-where he was wounded-and during the battle for France in 1814, that led to the emperor's abdication and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. There is some evidence that Parquin took part in the Battle of Waterloo-probably as a cuirassier. He remained in the cavalry under the royalist regime, but was eventually ruined by his involvement in Bonapartist conspiracies. This bo...

Bryn returns to the city to see the damage and finds a city in ruins. However, he also sees members of Nero's own Praetorian Guard setting fire to houses. Rumours fly that the Emperor has had the fire started deliberately in order to clear ground to build a grand new palace, but others blame the Christians. Bryn is amongst those arrested. Nero wants to round up a hundred Christians and have them set alight as a mighty spectacle. Will Bryn and his friends survive?

Lou Shook DEATH OF AN EMPIRE. BOOK 2

The Second Punic War began in 218 BC, pitting Hannibal Barca of Carthage against the Republic of Rome. Hannibal was a Carthaginian general, considered one of the greatest military commanders in history. Hannibal was highly successful in Carthage’s 17 Year War against Rome, until the very end. Early on, in the battles of the MAJOR AMBUSH OF LAKE TRASIMENE, and in the MONUMENTAL BATTLE OF CANNAE, Hannibal brought Rome to her knees. Hannibal continued to be highly successful against Rome, in spite of Carthage’s failure to provide adequate support and reinforcement. Hannibal’s defeat by Rome in 202 BC was due to his lack of support from Carthage, and due to the superior Leadership of Rome’s Scipio Africanus. Hannibal was forced out of Carthage by Cato the Elder, in spite of support by Scipio Africanus, and later committed suicide. Rome’s success continued against Philip V of Macedon at Cynoscephalae Hills and against Antiochus III the Great. Rome completed subjugation of all Italy, and Romans now ruled their world. This was followed by the rise of the Maccabbes of Israel, and the decline of the Seleucid Empire. Carthage was defeated in the Third Punic War 149-146 BC, and Rome destroyed Carthage.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Biology - Botany, , course: Doctor of Philosophy, language: English, abstract: Forests are an important natural 'brake' on climate change sequester and store more carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem. The main carbon pools in forest ecosystems are the living biomass of trees and understorey vegetation and the dead mass of litter, woody debris and soil organic matter. The carbon stored in the aboveground living biomass of trees is typically the largest pool. Thus, estimating aboveground forest biomass carbon is the most critical step in quantifying carbon stocks and fluxes from forests. India is a large developing country known for its diverse forest ecosystems and is also a mega-biodiversity country. Forest ecosystems in India are critical for biodiversity, watershed protection, and livelihoods of indigenous and rural communities. The National Communication of the Government of India to the UNFCC has reported that the forest sector is a marginal source of CO2 emissions. India has formulated and implemented a number of policies and programmes aimed at forest and biodiversity conservation, afforestation and reforestation. All forest policies and programmes have implications for carbon sink and forest management. A number of studies highlighting carbon stocks of India forests at macrolevel utilizing Remote Sensing & Geographic Information System techniques have gained momentum. However, Carbon st...

77AD. Gaius Valerius Verrens is an honoured member of Emperor Vespasian’s inner circle, but the enmity between him and Vespasian’s son Domitian means that, even in Rome, danger is never far away. Meanwhile, in the outer reaches of the Empire, in Britannia, trouble is brewing. The governor, Gnaeus Julius Agricola is preparing to march his legions north and Valerius is Agricola’s chief legal adviser and deputy governor. It's the opportunity he seeks to move his wife and son out of reach of Domitian’s wrath. But Britannia is where Valerius cut his military teeth and whetted his sword - and he will soon discover that the ghosts of his past are never far away and are more dangerous perhaps than Domitian. The massacre of a Roman garrison and suspicious death of the legate of the Ninth Legion throw Agricola’s preparations into confusion. Now his eyes turn west to Mona, the Druids Isle, where the Celtic priesthood still harbours hopes of ridding Britannia of Roman rule. But to deal with the druids and their savage Ordovice protectors Agricola needs a soldier he can trust at the head of the ‘unlucky’ Ninth. Only one man in the province has the experience and the ability...So a reluctant Valerius must put aside his scrolls and pick up his sword once more and march beside the eagle of the Ninth. It’s only as he stands on the shoreline opposite Mona that he understands any glory his new legion wins is likely to be fleeting and tainted - and that he has placed his family in deadly peril.

Charles Leslie With the 29th Regiment in the Peninsula . the 60th Rifles in Canada, 1807-1832

A rare eyewitness account of a British infantry officer with WellingtonThis book is a first rate eyewitness narrative of the Peninsular War written by a regimental officer of the British Army. In 1807 Charles Leslie made his way to Iberia to serve with his regiment-H. M. 29th Foot (the Worcestershire Regiment)-and begin a life of campaigning against Napoleon's invading French Army. Travelling via Gibraltar and Cadiz, his first experience of the battlefield came at Rolica in 1808, followed by the Battle of Vimieiro. After a skirmish at Grijo the regiment crossed the Douro into Portugal. Return to Spanish soil saw Leslie engaged in the Battle of Talavera where the 29th performed brilliantly charging uphill and displacing the French; Leslie was wounded in the leg in this action. The regiment went on to fight in the bloody affair that was the Battle of Albuera in 1811 and Leslie's account of it makes riveting reading. As Wellington gained the advantage in Spain, the 29th joined him in his drive across the Pyrenees into the South of France and the battles that led to the abdication of the French emperor in 1814. In 1813 Leslie transferred to the 60th Rifles, and after the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars served in Canada. This episode of Leslie's career up to 1832-together with a small section of anecdotes-concludes a highly interesting memoir. This essential volume, originally published in 1897 and rare on the antiquarian market, enhances the Leonaur collection of bo...

Charles William Vane Battle Imperial. the Campaigns in Germany . France for the Defeat of Napoleon 1813-1814

The Eagles at war for the future of EuropeThis is a vital history of the battles and campaigns in Germany and France which led to the defeat of Napoleon written by an experienced British cavalry officer and diplomat who was present and actively engaged throughout them all. The authors unique position enabled him to write a superb account—part history, part personal experience—of these turbulent days of warfare that would result in the abdication of an emperor, the fall of the First Empire ,the occupation of Paris and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. This is the story of the 'War of the Sixth Coalition' when the hereditary Imperial Crowns of Europe finally determined and achieved the downfall of the man they considered as a usurper and who had brought a continent to its knees and soaked it in blood for over a decade. There would be many a hard fought day before that came about and the Emperor had one final stroke of genius in war to display before it was over. Oscar Mmbali Empowering the Community for Effective Environment Management

Document from the year 2013 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: The Purpose of this study was to examine the development condition of the community living close to the Kakamega forest and to recommend strategies for developing the community, so that the community can contribute more effectively to the co-management of the natural resources. The author worked with forest committees in order to study the development issues, needs and priorities of the community; the resources in the community; the community's judgment of the previous and current development projects; and the experience of the community in relation to the development projects. The author used situational analysis, direct and participant observation, as well as two focused group discussions to obtain the data. The participants were members of the forest committees who represent the communities living within the 10km radius from forest boundary. Study findings indicate that there are limited community development projects in the area. These projects cannot adequately meet the needs of the community and cannot sustainably lead to environment conservation. The community largely participated in the development as either casual laborers or self employed community group members. The willingness to participate was influenced by the desire to improve the living conditions, while barriers to participation included perceived corruption, myths about gender, age and development...

Saint Petersburg, на английском языке

St Petersburg is the youngest among well-known European cities - its tercentenary was celebrated in 2003. For more than two hundred years it was the brilliant capital of the immense Russian Empire pushing the old patriarchal Moscow into the background. Having lost the official status of the capital in 1918, it has still remained the country's cultural and spiritual centre. It was in St Petersburg that the new type of Russian man was being formed, the greatest triumphs were celebrated and the events that influenced the destiny of Russia and the world as a whole took place. Not a single Russian city caused such admiration and was an object of such damnation as St Petersburg; there is no other city in Russia with which the brightest hopes and the darkest prophecies were associated.St Petersburg is unique indeed. Created by the powerful will of Peter the Great as "a window on to Europe", it reminded by its sudden emergence to European countries about the forgotten Russia that had been withdrawn, in their opinion, to the boundary of the Christian world. The Tsar founded the city "to curb the haughty neighbour", to ensure for Russia an outlet to the Baltic Sea and "to gain a foothold upon the coast". It was here, in the new capital that Peter the Great overcame the country's centuries-long isolation, strengthened its influence and proclaimed Russia as an Empire becoming its first Emperor. Peter, preoccupied with grandiose imperial plans, was inspired by the image of "eternal" Rome, so imperial symbols and parallels were highly important for him. Therefore the name of the Holy City of St Peter given to the new capital was associated not only with the heavenly patron of the Russian Tsar, but also with the idea of St Petersburg as the new Rome. It was not a mere coincidence that the coat of arms of the city on the Neva River is somewhat similar to that of the Vatican - crossed anchors correspond to the crossed keys of the Catholic state. The arms suggested, as it were, a link between Emperor Peter, who took a decision to open the doors of his "paradise" to Europe, with the Apostle Peter, who possessed keys from Paradise. And the anchor in the coat of arms was regarded as a symbol of the spiritual salvation and faith, implying at the same time the young Russian fleet.

Battle Scars: A Story of War and All That Follows

Jason Fox served with the SBS for over a decade, thriving on the close bonds of the Special Forces brotherhood and the ‘death or glory’ nature of their missions. Battle Scars tells the story of his career as an elite operator, from the gunfights, hostage rescues, daring escapes and heroic endeavours that defined his service, to a battle of a very different kind: the psychological devastation of combat that forced him to leave the military, and the hard reality of what takes place in the mind of a man once a career of imagined invincibility has come to an end. Unflinchingly honest, Battle Scars is a breathtaking account of Special Forces soldiering: a chronicle of operational bravery, and of superhuman courage on and off the battlefield.

Max Horlick Snafu. Unexpected Military Disasters in History

Shooting and being shot may seem an integral part of war, but they may not necessarily be the most essential elements of a struggle. There is always the hidden war behind the war. Veterans of wars know that in wartime, normal is not normal. Fouled up is normal. During the Second World War, these mistakes became labeled as SNAFUs. Max Horlick, who once fought in the Battle of the Bulge, shares narratives of ten historic battles covering from 450 BCE to 1945, in which the superior forces lost and often encountered the same flaw. While leading the reader through each battle, Horlick illustrates that generals, kings, presidents, and others in charge made terrible military decisions that caused soldiers to suffer. In the Battle of the Bulge, Eisenhower did not heed intelligence. On the other hand, Custer lost at Little Big Horn because he did. Other narratives highlight additional memorable battles such as Saratoga and the American Revolution, Agincourt and Shakespeare, Napoleon in Russia, and the battle of Salamis and Xerxes. SNAFU shares ten insightful and colorful tales of military battles, leaders, and the decisions that changed the course of history around the world.

A cruel young tyrant with an Oedipus complex who was generally unpopular with the populace, Nero lived hard and fast and committed suicide at the age of 30.

Herbert H. Sargent The Marengo Campaign 1800. the Victory that Completed the Austrian Defeat in Italy

1800-A momentous conflict between the French and AustriansThe French victory at the Battle of Marengo decisively terminated Bonaparte's Italian campaign. This early battle of the Napoleonic Wars was the culmination of a campaign which demonstrated the First Consul's genius for warfare and-combined with his Hannibal-like exploit of crossing the snow closed high passes of the Alps to engage the enemy-contributed one more fabulous accolade which was to make the legend that was Napoleon. Yet it was so nearly a disaster for the French as the Austrian General von Melas began the action with a master stroke which could have spelt disaster for many generals-other than the future Emperor of the First Empire. It was only won at the cost of one of France's most talented and valued generals-Desaix. The American historian and author of this examination of Marengo- Herbert H. Sargent-explains the strategy of this famous battle succinctly and then follows the facts with clear and expert military analysis to assist the student of military history, strategy and tactics.

An Eyewitness The Journal of the Three Days of the Battle of Waterloo. An Account of the Campaign of 1815 from Within the French Army

A telling account from a soldier of FranceThis anonymously written account tells of the experiences of a French soldier during the Waterloo campaign. It of course recounts the events of those momentous days from the raising of the French forces and their march to Belgium, to the Battle at Ligny, the conflict before Mont St. Jean (the author's own name for the battle), the defeat and the rout that followed and led to the fall of Paris. The author's recollections are concisely related and he is careful, perhaps, to give the reader few clues as to his identity or to the specific role he played. However, what makes this book particularly fascinating is the writers views on this moment in French history. He is no adoring disciple of the Emperor of the kind we often read about; nor yet is he a closet Royalist. He is an educated, intelligent, professional soldier marching to fight for a leader for whom he has no regard and for a cause in which he has no belief. French accounts are rare in the English language and though this one is not extensive it certainly provides the modern reader with valuable insights into the thoughts of at least some who marched under the tricolour during those fateful days of June 1815. The original publishers have augmented the authors text with the inclusion of several dispatches penned by notable participants after the battle. Available in softcover and hardcover with dust jacket for collectors.

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: 1.7, University of Göttingen (Institut für Forstpolitik und Naturschutz ), 70 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Community-Based Conservation (CBC) refers to wildlife conservation efforts that involve rural people as an integral part of a wildlife conservation policy. In Africa and specifically in Cameroon, there have been changes in state policies towards natural resources management particularly forest resources. This study deals basically on Cameroon, with national forest cover of over 42% which constitutes one of its major economic resources. Since 1995, a new forest policy act was enacted (proclaimed in 1994) to accommodate two approaches, that is, Community Forestry and sustainable forest management. Conserving and enhancing biodiversity through rural peoples' involvement was one of the components of the new forest policy act of 1995. The study analyses the conditions under which the CBC policies can be successfully implemented in Cameroon, with the case of the Korup National Park (KNP) and its support zone and the former Korup Project (KP). It also investigates the interest and the relationship of the different stakeholders concerned, especially the local community. The thesis uses three hypotheses (which are limited to CBC), semi-structured questionnaires and secondary data to test or investigate successful policy implementation in the KNP by analysing...
