Soil contamination included oil, chemical, heavy metals and organic contaminant. High concentration of chemicals and toxic metals made the soil incapable for any intended engineering works. studies have been performed on contaminated soil and for their stabilization.In this work attempt has been made to study the effect of diesel oil on properties of local soil and then their stabilization with Fly Ash (FA) and Cement Kiln Dust (CKD). The stabilisation of contaminated soil by CKD improved the soil characteristics to some extent. The value of cohesion can be increased nearly linear by addition of CKD. Swelling is reduced by increasing amount of CKD which leads to the conclusion that the swelling behavior of the soil can be effectively controlled by the addition of CKD. From this study, the CKD may be effectively utilized in improvement of hydrocarbon contaminated soil. The stabilisation of contaminated soil by fly ash improved the soil characteristics to some extent. From the overall observations of the study that, the stabilisation of diesel engine oil contaminated soil using fly ash has been observed to be effective.

Joffe (1949) defined soil as a natural body differentiated into horizons of mineral and organic constituents usually unconsolidated of variable depth, which differs from the parent material below in morphology, physical properties and constitution, chemical properties and composition, and biological characteristics. Soil is one of the most fundamental resources for sustainability and survival. It is one of the most important assets to protect and pass on to future generations.Soil contamination due to anthropogenic and natural sources is increasing day by day because of increasing population, industrialization, and urbanization. Soil is the receptor of many contaminants from various sources. Contamination decreases the quality of the soil and adversely affects soil organisms.For this study, soil samples from thirteen locations contaminated from agricultural, industrial, and organic sources spread over the districts of Alappuzha and Kottayam in Kerala in the south west coast area of India were analyzed to study the changes in soil characteristics and its influence on soil microbial communities and their activities.

Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Agrarian Studies, , language: English, abstract: Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is commonly grown in home gardens of tropical and sub-tropical countries. The fruit contains high levels of carbohydrates, protein, starch, calcium and vitamins. The Artocarpus heterophyllus is believed indigenous to the Western Ghats of India. It is adapted only to the humid tropical and near tropical climate. The tree flourishes in rich deep soil of medium or open texture, sometimes on deep gravelly or laterite soil. In India they say that the tree grows tall and thin on sand, short thick on sandy land. Here the physical and chemical properties of soil from surrounding plots of different varieties of Arthocarpus heterophyllus have been analysed by using different technical methods and evaluating the effects of soil property on jackfruit nutritional quality. It was observed that there was a considerable difference in case of some minerals likes phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, zinc and manganese. Change in the soil pH also noticed. The pH also plays a major role in the sweetness of the jackfruit. The optimum pH of the amylase inside the jackfruit was found to be 6.2 to 6.8. The result shows that the soils that have higher pH have more sweet flakes. The occurrence of organic matter accumulation and decomposition at the surface, together with translocation of organic material, iron and aluminium in both organically bound and inorganic forms indicate the operation of podzolation. High organic matter accumulation and forest litter demonstrate harmed chemical alteration and clay mineral regeneration. In case of microclimatic favour positions the cambisol develop could be possible on soliflucated parent material. However, the fluvisol is generated on marine sediments. All soils are aged between 6000-10000 years (ELLIS & MATHEWS 1984, MELLOR 1987). The invasion of Acacia mearnsii in the Kouga catchment, Eastern Cape, South Africa, has various negative impacts on the ecosystem. The native shrubby fynbos vegetation has adapted to the acidic nutrient poor soils and Mediterranean climate of the Kouga Mountains. Fynbos, however, is currently being out competed by the much taller Acacia mearnsii trees, due to their competitive nature and ability to fix nitrogen, thereby enriching the soil. The invaded sections of the valley bottoms and lower hill slopes are characterised by an almost complete monoculture of Acacia mearnsii, with very few fynbos species still present. The work looks at the influence of the invasion on soil properties, vegetation structure and soil erosion. It further explore how these changes change over time since clearing.

This work investigates the impacts of the effluents and other wastes of a Textile Mill on quality of soil and water in the surrounding areas. Some specific impacts on soil and water quality have been identified. For example, the soil was getting enriched with both ionic matter and hydrophobic organic matter, which had important consequences. The soil became enriched with the trace metals, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The quality of the drinking water in and around the textile mill did reflect the changes in the physico-chemical quality of the soil. The water was characterized by considerable presence of the cations, Ca, Mg, Na and K, being compensated by comparative presence of the anions, Cl, NO3 and SO4. The toxic organic contaminant, phenol, was present in some of the drinking water sources. The water was contaminated with Mn, Ni, and Pb, and also fluoride. The rice crop grown in the study area had accumulated appreciable amounts of metals in them as seen from the analysis of rice grains and husks. Significantly, the husks were seen to be richer in the metals than the grains with one or two exceptions.

Often differences in land uses (forest, rubber plantation, paddy field, bare land) are known to have specific effects on soil properties. In the context of the project Living Landscapes China (LILAC) these effects were evaluated and the characteristics of soil types under changing conditions in two transects (altitude and parent material in transect 1, land uses in transect 2) in the Naban River Watershed National Nature Reserve were classified. We used field investigations to classify the soil types, as well as laboratory analyses to quantify specific characteristics in samples, taken from the profiles. Soil physical (bulk density, water content, texture) and chemical parameters (total contents of carbon, nitrogen and macro nutrients, ECEC) were investigated. While differences in altitude did not seem to have profound influences on the soils, effects of land uses were pronounced especially in the first 10 to 20 cm of soil profiles. Soils under forests contain between 1.3 % - 2 % SOC and 0.15 % - 0.17 % TN in the Ah horizon. For investigating this hypothesis, a study was conducted at three pair sites viz: Simina Para, Kark Mohajon Para and At- mile area of Sadar upazila under Khagarachari district to determine the effects of shifting cultivation on soil environment. Both soil physico-chemical properties and the biochemical and biological properties of soil microbes were studied. Soil efflux (SEF) is an important component in the global carbon cycle. The combination of root and microbial respiration, SEF is often used as a measure of biological productivity in the soil. Although SEF has been widely studied, some areas have been neglected, including the effect of timber harvest management on SEF and SEF in different soil horizons. Timber harvesting compacts the soil, removes standing vegetation, increases debris, alters the microclimate, etc., all of which could potentially alter SEF. The Missouri Ozark Forest Ecosystem Project (MOFEP) is a long-term study in which the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) installed experiments of single-tree uneven-age (UAM), clear-cut even-age (EAM), and control no-cut (NHM) timber harvests to find ecosystem-management alternatives. To determine the effect of timber harvest on subsurface SEF, nine soil pits, three in each treatment, were dug to directly measure the magnitude of changes in SEF across the soil profile.

Land degradation and soil erosion are significant environmental problems affecting agricultural productivity and livelihood in Malawi. A number of soil fertility improvement technologies are being promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture and non governmental organization, in order to improve agricultural productivity and food security. In spite of the growing awareness of low cost soil fertility technologies, the rate of adoption and continued use of the technologies remain limited. The thesis examines farmer's perception of the current level of soil fertility and factors effecting farmers use of different soil fertility improvement technologies, using example of farmers from Machinga and Zomba Districts, in Malawi. The results provide insights for designing appropriate strategies, policies and programmes aimed at promoting adoption of soil fertility improvement technologies.
