The National Program of Biodiesel Production and Use was officially launched by the Brazilian government in 2004, having as one of its main objectives the inclusion of family agriculture into the biodiesel production chain on a sustainable basis. An important aspect of sustainability proposed by the program was the cultivation of oleaginous in association with food crops so as to assure the food security in the country. This work studied the area of Morro do Chapéu, located in a region known not only for its high levels of poverty and semi-arid climate conditions, but also for being the biggest castor producer in Brazil. This oleaginous demonstrated to be the most adaptable crop to this specific location and it has been often cultivated in association with food crops such as maize and beans. Basing on that, this work builds upon the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach so as to provide a sustainability assessment of food and castor production among family farmers in the city of Morro do Chapéu. This analysis should be especially useful to professionals in Rural and Sustainable Development fields or anyone else who may be interested in sustainabilty-related topics.

This study is carried on the premise that the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the worship, social and development life of the church remains unsatisfactory. As the pioneer in work with persons with disabilities, the church in Kenya is expected to provide the best inclusion model programmes. The study addressed prevailing perceptions which impact on the inclusion of persons with disabilities; the social, theological and physical barriers to the inclusion; support services which could enhance inclusion; and, training and other interventions needed to improve the sensitivity of the church leadership to the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the church life. Data collection was through interviews of persons with disabilities and a focus group. The study recognized that inclusion is largely impacted by attitudes and perceptions which lead to discriminatory and oppressive church and societal structures. It recommended ways in which the church could provide a social, physical and theological environment in which persons with disabilities may realise their full potential in the life of the church.

Robinson, an authority on diversity and inclusion, has been helping companies create systemic process of change for more than twenty years. In the Inclusion Revolution Is Now, she explores as you cancreate an environment of inclusion where all employees are accountable for their behaviors, and able to work together to accomplish the organizational goals.recognize that civil diversity impedes systemic processes of change to occur. So diversity is viewed as an initiative or a program with no sustainability at the organizational level.ensure employees willingly practice inclusion regardless of personal beliefs. While there is still racism, prejudice, sexism, and other exclusionist attitudes among people in the workplace, organizational leaders have the power and responsibility to mandate a climate of inclusion. Supporting diversity and inclusion is also a prerequisite for capitalizing on the ideas that diverse people can bring to your organization. Most diversity practices used by organizations do not actually promote inclusion, and exclusion continues to exist. There's a better way to achieve inclusion, and it starts with the Inclusion Revolution is Now.

In order to obtain a clearer understanding of what marginality means in case of the disabled and how it is caused, it is necessary to shift the analysis from the level of individual and micro levels in order to encompass the societal level. One has to look to the way power and resources are distributed between social groups having competing interests. Social disadvantage and discrimination of the disabled should be seen in this wider context. Our research proposed an inquiry into the different dimensions of what exclusion of Deaf youth in Romania from employment and other social resources means and how it is caused:to describe and measure incidences of social exclusion of young people with hearing impairment; to identify pathways and measures promoting inclusion; to find out how to involve excluded people - both individually and through organizations concerned with them - in identifying exclusion and promoting inclusion.

Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, , language: English, abstract: The conventional approach of biodiesel production is transesterification, using oil and alcohol in the presence of a catalyst with glycerol as a by-product of the reaction. Product quality is dependent on the type and amount of catalyst, type of oil feedstock, alcohol-to-oil ratio, etc. In terms of the best process, currently the alkali catalyzed process is the most profitable while the enzymatic based one is even more promising due to the lower consumption of energy and water; however it requires that the enzyme cost is reduced. The reason that biodiesel is not utilized widely around the world is due to the high cost of raw materials. To overcome this, one can use lower quality oils, such as Waste Cooking Oil (WCO). A lot of research has been carried out on the production of biodiesel from fresh vegetable and animal oil sources but the use of Waste Cooking Oil, such as palm oil, etc. has not been well documented. Then the aim of this current project is to analyze and optimize the conditions for biodiesel production from Waste Cooking Oil, by investigating interaction effects among process variables (temperature, oil-to-methanol molar ratio and catalyst loading) using SPC and other tools. Thus this project focuses on making biodiesel processes better and more efficient.

Literature is reviewed in the areas of social skills seen in normally functioning adolescents and the existing social skills training methods used both in and outside of schools, to address social skills deficits for those with autism. To limit the scope of this review, the population of focus includes individuals with Asperger's disorder and mild autism. A plan for clinical interventions in a school-based program is presented.

This volume builds understanding of practices in youth and community development that create or build social capital assets at the individual, group, and community levels. The authors explore whether programs contribute to the development of social capital at the individual and community scales, thereby fostering and enhancing positive youth development as well as community development. It includes articles on defining and measuring social capital through instruments designed to document impact and also to engage program participants. The authors then discuss program practices that build social capital in a wide range of youth development settings, from community-based service-learning to 4-H community clubs. Finally, they focus on building social capital in particular contexts, including work in rural communities with the most vulnerable youth. The volume is designed to help practitioners: Refine their dual focus on youth and community development Clarify constructs that help translate the public value of positive youth development to community stakeholders Provide examples of practices that link youth and youth programs more intentionally to the social relationships that knit communities together. This is the 138th volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions.

Nago Grandma and White Papa is a signal work in Brazilian anthropology and African diaspora studies originally published in Brazil in 1988. This edition makes Beatriz Gois Dantas's historioethnographic study available to an English-speaking audience for the first time.Dantas compares the formation of Yoruba (Nago) religious traditions and ethnic identities in the Brazilian states of Sergipe and Bahia, revealing how they diverged from each other due to their different social and political contexts and needs. By tracking how markers of supposedly "pure" ethnic identity and religious practice differed radically from one place to another, Dantas shows the social construction of identity within a network of class-related demands and alliances. She demonstrates how the shape and meaning of "purity" have been affected by prolonged and complex social and cultural mixing, compromise, and struggle over time. Ethnic identity, as well as social identity in general, is formed in the crucible of political relations between social groups that purposefully mobilize and manipulate cultural markers to define their respective boundaries--a process, Dantas argues, that must be applied to understanding the experience of African-descended people in Brazil.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of family styles and adventure program participation on an individual's change in intrinsic motivation. Previous family style studies (Rathunde, 1996; 2001) have indicated that an individual's family style affects his subjective perceptions and behaviors in different social situations. This study examined whether different family styles resulted in different levels of intrinsic motivation in regard to adventure program participants. In addition, adventure programs, which consist of adventurous activities and structured programs, satisfy the needs of competence, autonomy and relatedness, which are known to promote intrinsic motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2002; Witt & Caldwell, 2005). Therefore, this study is based on the hypothesis that participating in an adventure program may change an individual's level of intrinsic motivation.

The book Capital and Justice calls for a deep examination of current power, politics and economics in a social context where democratic institutions are being threatened. The contributions discuss the various aspects of global accumulation, production and employment from a broader perspective in order to examine their interlinkages with other economic, social, and political processes. Indeed, concerns with social inclusion extend well beyond the purely economic account of justice and fairness, since the degree of economic inequality also affects social cohesion and political stability, and can also have negative implications for economic growth and democratic institutions. The book focuses on the theoretical analysis and empirical discussions about the contemporary relations among the inflated financial markets, the low investment trends and the changes in the patterns of production and employment. In this respect, there were three groups of contributions that aim to think and build a just economy. The first group (Koo; Hermann; Madi) presents the main features of global economic dynamics. The second (Yadu and Satheesha; Eynon) analyses the urgent social challenges and the trends in political strategies. Finally, the third group (Komlos; Lima; Morgan-Milá) challenges conventional mainstream viewpoints and highlight the foundations of an alternative political economy paradigm. The editors, Gerson P. Lima and Maria Alejandra Madi, hope the book will stimulate further debate amon...

This text is divided in three chapters in which are discussed social rights and their applicability through public policies and the public policies available to the Romani population, the history of their presence in the country and their current demands. The first Romani people to get to Brazil were forced here by law in the 16th century. Exiled from Portugal and Spain, they remained in a land that branded them as unwanted. The legal system determined it was a crime to be a Romani. "Public housing" is often used as a generic term to refer to all publicly assisted housing, but the term "public housing" actually refers to a specific federal program. Created in 1937, the low-rent public housing program was the first major federal rental housing assistance program. The program initially subsidized the construction, and later the ongoing operation and maintenance, of multifamily rental housing properties for low-income families. While public housing is a federally created and funded program, the properties are owned and managed at the local level by quasi-governmental public housing authorities (PHAs) under contract with the federal government. Given this unique federal-local relationship, the program is governed in part by federal rules and regulations and in part by policies set at the local level.

Between good intentions and great results lies a program theory—not just a list of tasks but a vision of what needs to happen, and how. Now widely used in government and not-for-profit organizations, program theory provides a coherent picture of how change occurs and how to improve performance. Purposeful Program Theory shows how to develop, represent, and use program theory thoughtfully and strategically to suit your particular situation, drawing on the fifty-year history of program theory and the authors' experiences over more than twenty-five years. «From needs assessment to intervention design, from implementation to outcomes evaluation, from policy formulation to policy execution and evaluation, program theory is paramount. But until now no book has examined these multiple uses of program theory in a comprehensive, understandable, and integrated way. This promises to be a breakthrough book, valuable to practitioners, program designers, evaluators, policy analysts, funders, and scholars who care about understanding why an intervention works or doesn't work.» —Michael Quinn Patton, author, Utilization-Focused Evaluation «Finally, the definitive guide to evaluation using program theory! Far from the narrow 'one true way' approaches to program theory, this book provides numerous practical options for applying program theory to fulfill different purposes and constraints, and guides the reader through the sound critical thinking required to select from among the options. Progress in lifting children out of poverty in the last decades has been slow and limited in the developing world, while the recent global economic crisis has exacerbated child poverty, youth unemployment, and social exclusion in many developed countries. By critically unraveling the long-term consequences of growing up poor, the close linkages between multiple deprivations and violation of human rights in childhood and adolescence, and their effects on labor market entry and future career in a number of developing and developed countries, this book significantly enriches the existing literature. Drawing on multiple disciplinary perspectives, it makes a forceful case for the eradication of child poverty to take center stage in the Sustainable Development Goals.

We may say we want to be inclusive, but what if we really don't? What if our brains are hard-wired for selfishness and similarity and not for diversity and altruism? Having a diverse workforce is no guarantee that the work environment is inclusive. Companies hire for diversity and manage for similarity. We hire people for their difference and then teach them directly and indirectly what they have to do to fit in to the corporate culture. The Illusion of Inclusion exposes a myriad of diverse reasons why people are not more fully engaged and offers you the key to unlock the "Geometry of Inclusion". This book takes the lid off Pandora's box and explores the complexity of inclusion; where affinity bias or "mini-me" syndrome and the need to fit in are unconsciously blocking our ability to be inclusive. It offers a road map and an easy to comprehend model on how to minimize the impact of unconscious and conscious biases in order to embed an inclusive organizational culture.

The announcement that the Human Terrain System (HTS) was brought to a close in the fall of 2014 met with a flurry of responses. Commentators assessed the character and content of the social science research program and several identified plausible legacies that it may bequeath U.S. Armed Services. Often the conclusions therein were mixed, hinting instructively at the absence of a strong empirical record of the program. Therefore, this book is a welcomed larger study of the HTS, one of the first investigations to delineate the experiences of former program members, chart the stance of the American Anthropological Association, and gain engagement both from the U.S. Training and Doctrine Command, and a manager from the first primary contractor, BAE Systems. As a scholarly assessment of the complex interplay of these perspectives, the book becomes part of an attempt to find a platform for collaboration and discussion on what has become a profoundly polarizing subject.

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Peoples / Nations, grade: 85.0%, Erasmus University Rotterdam, course: Rural Livelihoods and Global Change, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the question of how the land tenure system in the North West Region of Cameroon affects rural farmers‟ access to the National Support Program to the Maize Sub-Sector (NSPMS) in Cameroon. It does this by confronting NSPMS‟s assumptions about farmers‟ access to land with, the land tenure question existing in the Region. The paper uses an analytical framework which links land tenure institutions, processes of groupformation and social exclusion to challenge these assumptions. The paper argues that, following the nature of the African land question, traditional chiefs do not mainly administer land for the benefit of their subjects in an era of increased land commoditization. Traditional land administration in this era is highly knitted into economic and social relations of power and status which thus suggest high risks of discrimination and exclusion. As such, the paper seeks to add to the knowledge of how mechanisms of social exclusion could be rooted in land tenure institutions but go unnoticed and, continue to further nurture other forms of disadvantage, inequality, exclusion and great vulnerability to acute poverty. The findings of this research suggest disparities between; expectations of NSPMS in their grant making assumptions and, fie...

Social Reconstruction as a philosophy, stream of thought or "official program" ois often synonymous withDepression-era Progressivism. But, Social Reconstruction, unlike progressivism, enjoyed political stardom. The spirit of progressivism, atleast in terms of education, found a home in those enthusiasts who supported a child-centered perspective of education. Others, such as theessentialists viewed their progressive role as one that advanced the view of essential or basic education as the most sound approach tocurriculum and teaching. Still others, more radical in their outlook, believed that progress should be framed with questions about socialjustice and equity. Proponents of social reconstruction included Harold Rugg and George Counts, although the "movement" was rich withsupporters. To date, social reconstruction is only a by word in most texts that deal with the Progressive Era or progressive education, perhaps, because Rugg and Counts, the two most visible proponents, sought and received the political limelight, no matter how glaring. Inany event, the depths of social reconstruction have yet to be plumbed. Hence, the first book in this series will offer a comprehensivetreatment of Social Reconstruction, which include chapters that examine its proponents, political nature, and social justice programs born ofand within the tumultuous context of progressive politics.
